OF METROPOLITAN KANSAS CITY
KANSAS CITY REGION
IS TO ADVANCE & SUPPORT
ARTS COUNCIL OF METROPOLITAN
FOR THE BENEFIT OF THETHE ARTS
THE MISSION OF
ARTSKCKANSAS CITY
WHAT WE DOThe arts make the metropolitan area stronger, brighter, and more vibrant.
They surround us, sustain us, help us grow, preserve our
past, and celebrate our present. The arts play a crucial
role in our lives, in our economy, and in our future. The
arts are more than singing, dancing, painting, sculpting,
and writing. A community rich with arts attracts families,
companies, and tourists which in turn creates jobs, financial
support for schools, and vital social services. The arts
encourage creativity and innovation – and attract and
retain talented individuals. The arts give our lives meaning.
The Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City primarily
serves as the convener and facilitator to encourage public
policy and civic priorities that are in support of the arts
and cultural community. We serve as the voice for the
arts community in many important civic dialogues. We
work with over 160 local arts and cultural organizations
to foster stronger relationships and nurture networks of
arts organizations that work together to strengthen the
community. The Arts Council helps to connect the arts to
resources and the business and civic community to the arts.
1
The ARTS continue to be one of our region’s most SIGNIFICANT assets with an economic impact of over $273 million annually.
I love the arts! I love dance, music, theater, film, and the visual arts; painting, sculpture, and mixed media. I am inspired by the beauty, the elegance, the creativity, and the challenge to my thinking and sensibilities that the arts present to me on a daily basis. There is an amazing transformation occurring in our community and the arts are leading the way.
This transformation is not only what we see from the outside in terms of more galleries,
performance venues, or opportunities to participate in art activities, but is also reflected within our community. There is an energy, a buzz in the air, an excitement about art in this region. The arts have the potential to change the way people see the world and their place in it. From this new vantage point, new connections are made, new possibilities seen, and new opportunities created. When people experience art, they begin to act like inspired people. And inspired people attract other inspired people, helping to transform businesses and communities.
With this new level of prominence for the arts comes the opportunity for our region to elevate Kansas City as a destination for arts and culture. I’m pleased to say that our civic partners, the Convention and Visitors Association, the Kansas City Area Development Council, the Downtown Council, and the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, understand that the arts are something that we all can agree benefit our region.
The Arts Council is proud to partner with the arts and the business communities, helping Kansas City transform into a world class arts destination and position the region as “America’s Creative Crossroads.”
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Sincerely,Harlan Brownlee
I love the arts - yes, it’s true.

Dear Friends,In 2009-2011, the Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City made great strides in fulfilling our organizational goals and our mission. This year we built on the strong structure created by our previous President and CEO and embraced new leadership. In this report, you will read about
our growth over these two years and reflections from those in the community who have been touched by our work.
The Arts Council is at the center of this activity and continues to work with all art organizations to enhance the value of art activities within the region. In addition, the opening of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is truly a rare opportunity that will highlight all the arts in the Kansas City area. It is incumbent upon the Arts Council to ensure that all art organizations, civic organizations, and businesses benefit from such an epic event.
Sincerely,Pat McCown
FROM THE BOARD CHAIRWe began these years just shortly after welcoming a new President and CEO, Harlan Brownlee. Harlan’s vision for the Arts Council invited new ideas to build on the commitment and passion brought by previous leadership. In 2010, in our work with the business community, we introduced the Business Engagement Packages, which were an opportunity for businesses to be involved in the wide range of programs and services we offer. Lead by our development team, the Arts Council has seen a greater strength in these relationships and made it even easier to get your business connected to the arts.
We are pleased to announce that after five years, we topped $2.1 million in giving during the 2011 ArtsKC Fund Campaign. This milestone was achieved during one of the greatest recessions in our country’s history. The vibrant arts community weighed in significantly and was one of the keys to achieving this success.
Kansas City is experiencing a renaissance of arts and culture that the Arts Council hopes to foster in the coming years. We ask that you join us in building on strong roots of our community in this burgeoning new age of growth and development.
The arts continue to be one of our region’s most SIGNIFICANT assets with an economic impact of over $273 MILLION annually.

CONNECT
Is a luncheon series that is designed to educate the business and civic community about Kansas City’s rich and diverse arts community and some of the issues that are associated with its growth and development. In this year the Arts Council held over 10 sessions such as: Open Wide and Say “AAAART”: Arts in Healthcare, The Art of Fashion, From the Skylines to the Streets: Designing our Urban Environment, Too Busy to be Creative, The Art Factor: Medical Missions Foundation.
Arts & Issues Now ShowingArt/WorkBrings businesses together with local artists to display their works of art in lobbies, conference rooms, and workspaces. Changing theses spaces into rotating galleries beautifies and adds an element of creativity. Now Showing is helping create corporate art collections, inspired employees, first-time art buyers, and successful “art-trepeneurs.” Over these two years we have seen twenty one businesses invite the arts into their corporate spaces, choosing exhibits from over 130 artists in our Now Showing portfolio.
Is a city-wide corporate arts challenge that encourages employees to share their creative talents in the literary, visual and performing arts. In the 2010 and 2011 Art/Work: Inspiring the Workplace corporate arts challenge, thirty three businesses and approximately 750 employee artists and CEOs participated in the program, proving that Kansas City’s most creative thinkers can be found in banks, construction sites, and office cubes.
Art/Work creates an environment of inspiration, respect, camaraderie, and encouragement. Employees build new relationships and kindle one another’s creativity, dramatically improving communication, and a company’s quality of work life.
The Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City provides opportunities for businesses of all sizes to participate in the arts through our business programs:
Each NEW series of work continues to generate a different kind of informal
DISCUSSION among colleagues.
What I APPRECIATE about this experience was the opportunity to be exposed to other types of ART, meet top notch performers, but most of all, to have the musical embers stirred inside me that have been laying dormant for so long. I do so
much appreciate that!

ArtsKC Fund
2 To broaden access to high-quality arts experiences
To promote excellence in the arts and arts administration3
To provide a stable source of financial support to the arts1
Each year, thousands of donors participate in this united arts fund drive to
help support the diversity of arts organizations that call our region home.
Their investment in the ArtsKC Fund enables many of our grant recipients to
reach out to those who would not otherwise have access to the power and
inspiration of the arts due to income, disabilities, isolation, or other barriers. Many
grant recipients offer scholarships, give free and/or discounted performances,
present workshops, and partner with social service organizations to provide
arts experiences.
Contributions to the ArtsKC Fund are made by many corporations and individuals;
however, just under half of the total funds raised come from Workplace Giving
Campaigns. These annual fund drives offer employees an opportunity to make
a single financial contribution to a wide range of arts organizations, artists, and
arts programs across the metropolitan area. No matter how many employees a
company has, where they live, the physical layout of their offices or their brand of
corporate culture, creative businesses across the Kansas City metropolitan area
find ways to engage their employees in art themed events to increase fundraising
and employee arts awareness. ArtsKC Fund Workplace Giving Campaigns offer
the opportunity to learn more about the arts and to discover ways to participate
in local arts events.
Over the past 5 years, the Arts Council has provided over $2 .1 MILLION in financial assistance and support to over 300 arts and cultural organizations, individual artists, and arts projects throughout the five-county metropolitan area. The ArtsKC Fund has three primary GOALS:
