Question a)

This is the type of question we practised last time.

‘Explore how language in the extract influences your view of Slim’

Page 4: Of Mice and Men Language re-take 2. The exam The language exam is made up of two parts: A two part question on Of Mice and Men AND A writing task

If you found the practice on Slim tricky, here’s some ideas for what you could have written…

• The first image suggests that he fills the door frame: ‘A tall man stood inthe doorway.’• His hair is described in detail, to give a strong impression: ‘his long, black, damp hair’• His dress did not distinguish him (‘Like the others he wore blue jeansand a short denim jacket.’)• The way in which he moves is given a strong simile to present him as anatural leader: ‘moved with a majesty only achieved by royalty andmaster craftsmen’• He is shown to be an expert at his craft – detailed description• But not only that: because he is respected so much for his expertise, heis respected in other fields: ‘…that his word was taken on any subject,be it politics or love’• After the big build-up, his name is finally revealed: ‘This was Slim’

• He is described as not having a definite age: ‘He might have been thirty-fiveor fifty.’• He is shown as having great insight and perception: ‘understandingbeyond thought’• He is also delicate and sensitive in how he uses his hands, as the similesuggests: ‘were as delicate in their action as those of a temple dancer’• There is repeated stress on his kindness and gentleness (‘he lookedkindly’… ‘very gentle’… ‘he said gently’… ‘His voice was very gentle’• He is very sympathetic towards George and Lennie, asking them aboutthemselves and welcoming their presence: ‘His tone was friendly. Itinvited confidence without demanding it.’Reward other responses, provided that they are rooted in the extract.Reward responses that link the language of the extract with the influenceon the candidate’s views.

The questions are pretty much the same

Both have exactly the same assessment objectives and mark scheme.

Both require detailed and thoughtful analysis of language.

However question b) is worth 24 marks instead of 16 marks so is a very important question!

Question b)

The easiest way to do b) is find yourself an extract in the novel, and repeat the process of question a).

So for this particular question, you must find another part of the novel where a male character is presented.

Technique

What male characters are there?

Which events is he involved in?

Where would I find this part of the novel?

Page 11: Of Mice and Men Language re-take 2. The exam The language exam is made up of two parts: A two part question on Of Mice and Men AND A writing task

You should find an event, then look carefully at maybe two pages from the novel.

Now try writing a response from your chosen ‘extract’
