One of the practices of Lent has been to give something up during the season. It’s a form of fasting as we deny ourselves some small pleasure or indulgence and offer that up to God as a part of our worship. Through self-denial, we draw closer to Christ for Paul realized that it was in his suffering that he came to know and commune with Jesus the most. Instead of just asking what you are giving up, why not also ask what you can do during Lent? Here are some suggestions to consider and alternatives to take on according to God’s Word:

Give up electronic devices (television/computer/iPAD/cell phone) one evening a week!

Instead, spend time with your family or friends. Or better yet, visit someone who is lonely or sick. Give someone the precious gift of your time! Philippians 2:1-5, Joshua 1:8

Give up 10 to 15 minutes of sleep!

Instead, use that time for prayer, Bible study and personal devotion. 1 Thess. 5:16, Phil. 4:8

Give up buying anything but essentials for yourself!

Instead, give the money to those most in need: the hungry, the homeless, those living on a fixed income. Acts 20:35

Give up time serving yourself whether that be a workout, a massage or a nice meal out!

Instead, go serve someone in need. Galatians 5:13-14, John 13:14

Give up grumbling!

Instead, "In everything give thanks." 1 Thess. 5:18. Find three things each day to give thanks for, and if it involves someone else, tell them.

Give up finding faults with others!

Instead concentrate on their best points and look at them as children of God. Galatians 3:26

Give up speaking unkindly!

Instead, let your speech be generous and understanding. Build others up with your words. Ephesians 4:32

Thank you, Munholland United Methodist Thank you, Munholland United Methodist Thank you, Munholland United Methodist Thank you, Munholland United Methodist Women and Church FamilyWomen and Church FamilyWomen and Church FamilyWomen and Church Family

I want to express to you my deepest appreciation for your support for our 2016 UMW Sunday. We have had many positive comments and it could-n't have happened without your help and pray-ers. Sarah Kreutziger's message about Lydia was a special blessing and she delivered it with such grace and finesse.

Pam Eversmeyer's and Jessika Horner's Child-

rens time based on the Lydia story was delight-ful, and Jan Schluter's "Down to the River to Pray" song was the perfect accompaniment. What great little actors, too. Some serious talent brewing there!

Julianne's singing of "The Lord's Prayer"was so beautiful it made our spirits soar.

Phyllis and I would not have been able to tell our stories if not for each and every one of you mak-ing them happen. It's easy to tell good stories when we have such good material. And thank you to our pastor and staff who supported us in making it all happen.

So for all those who were there and performed a role, thank you. For all those there who wore purple, thank you. For all those who could not be there but who have supported UMW and kept us in your prayers, thank you. I am so proud to be part of such a loving, creative, talented and hardworking community of Christian women and I thank God for each of you.

Love in Christ, Pat Mitchell

On May 19, 2015, a team of more than a dozen people began meeting to discuss the possibility of starting an alternative style worship experience to minister to peo-ple Munholland currently is not reaching. After sev-eral months of work, a proposal was made to the Church Council in August and was resoundingly af-firmed. Work on the launch of the service continued through the end of the year.

When the results of the 2015 Stewardship Campaign were received in December, it became apparent that it was not fiscally possible for Munholland to begin the new worship service at this time. While we are disap-pointed, we are not dismayed as we feel this service is critical to the future of Munholland. As a result, we are postponing the launch of the service until funding is available.

Please continue to be in prayer for the guidance of the Holy Spirit regarding the resourcing, timing and for-mation of this new worship experience to reach new people for Jesus Christ.

Thank you for your prayers and support. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask me.

Rev. Dr. Tim Smith

“SWEETS FOR YOUR SWEETIE”

Sunday, February 14th

St. Andrews Class is having a bake sale!

Baked goodies for your Valentine will be sold after all three worship services in the Ministry Hall.

If you have any questions, please call Phyllis at 504-701-3622.

It’s that time of year again! The parade rolls down Metairie Road beginning at 12 pm and people begin lining up on the road around 10 am. It’s the perfect time to share the love of God with people who are literally at our front door by handing out water to the parade goers and by handing out invites to the Church-wide Easter Party.

We are asking for donations of bottled water, and for each small group to sign up for a 20 minute shift in handing out water and invitations. Last year, we had dozens of people come to the Easter event and learned about our children’s ministry through this parade! Please sign up on the form provided. This year we will have food trucks in the Metairie Road parking lot so that Munholland members and our visitors can have lunch!

RECYCLE MARDI GRAS BEADS & SMALL THROWS/TOYS

Camp Istrouma Mission Opportunity Tuesday, March 8th – Saturday, March 12th

Camp Istrouma is a United Methodist Retreat Center used mostly by youth groups, but also for some adult gatherings. Over the years it had fallen into disrepair. Many churches, including Munholland have spent time helping to renovate it and the changes are amazing. There are still tasks to be performed, so we will continue working. Camp Istrouma is located near Greenwell Springs, north of Denham Springs. It is about a 1.5 hour drive away from Munholland.

Still waiting to get involved with a mission pro-ject? Don't wait any longer. Munholland is sponsoring a work week this spring, and anyone can help out. Ac-tual projects are still to be determined, but will likely include easy tasks such as cleaning, medium jobs such as painting & small repair work, and harder jobs such as construction. (Last year we built two wilderness cab-ins!)

How can you help? Join us for the whole time, one day, or an afternoon. Sign-up sheets will be available soon. Overnight participants can stay in one of the camp cabins (dorm style, bunkbeds, with heat/AC). Food is provided.

If you can’t attend the mission trip, please consider do-nating some money towards the project. If you are una-ble to donate, please pray for the participants.

For more information, contact any member of the Mis-sion Team or the church staff at 834-9910.

The Cross.

In Jesus’ time it was the ultimate symbol of shame and defeat, the Roman form of cap-ital punishment for the worst criminals of the day. One can imagine how his followers must have felt when he called them to pick up and carry their cross.

That call is still present for us who follow Jesus today. The cross is not just a symbol we look to or place our faith in. It’s not just what Jesus did for us. It is what Jesus invites us to. It is a way of life and the Crux of following Jesus.

In this Lenten message series, we’re going to consider what it means to really follow Jesus and the cost of the cross to which he calls us. I hope you’ll join us.

THINK ABOUT IT

“I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out – plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans

to give you the future you hope for”. (Jeremiah 29:11- Messenger) We don’t know the answers to every question we have about the future. Will I succeed? Do I have

enough money/brains/time/education/connections and all the rest? None of us knows. In fact, we haven’t even thought of all the questions! We don’t even know what we don’t know! But wait --- there IS someone who knows what we don’t know, and that is God Himself. If we had all the answers to our

questions about the future, we’d have no need of God. Our limitations serve to make us dependent on Him, to bring us back into intimate relationship with God, our Creator and our Father.

What we know is valuable, but it’s not as important as WHO we know. If you know God through faith in Jesus Christ, it will be the sure foundation of a life lived for His Glory. He holds your future and He will guide every step you commit to Him that will fulfill your destiny.
