SPORTS MEDIA WHIZ
By Ray Wilson
From the KNBR stable of OTA speakers now comes Brian Murphy, who helps hold down – with Paul McCaffrey - the weekday morning slot from 5 until 9am.
Born and raised in Mill Valley, Brian played a little baseball for Tam High (a very little, by his own admission), graduating in 1985. Matriculating at UCLA he embarked on a media career, serving as sports editor for the Daily Bruin.
After four years at Westwood he set out on perhaps the most interesting adventure of his young career. Traveling to Dublin, Ireland, he took a job behind the bar at O’Donoghue’s Pub in the city center. Brian being a Harp and therefore blessed with a natural gift of gab, it would be fascinating to learn, for instance, what his customers thought of American-style beer and football.
After nearly a year of talking, probably mostly about rugby and soccer and Irish politics, he returned to the USA and accepted a job with the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, serving as the 49ers beat writer beginning in 1994. Brian’s timing was spot-on as it
was to prove the 49ers last Super Bowl season.
In 1999 he left Santa Rosa for the San Francisco Examiner, which was shortly sold to the Fang family by the Hearst Corporation, purchasers of the San Francisco Chronicle. After two seasons covering the Oakland A’s, he moved to the Chronicle where he was given the assignment of “national golf writer.” While in this slot he covered all the major tournaments from 2001 to 2004, including the Ryder Cup.
In November of 2004 he made an abrupt change in direction, going from print to broadcast media, joining the
burgeoning world of sports talk radio at KNBR. The latter likes to bill itself as a “local” station, but is actually a property of Cumulus Media, which owns 347 AM and FM stations located mostly in medium-sized markets. In fact, Cumulus is the second largest owner of radio stations in the United States.
Together with co-host Paul McCaffrey, the “Murph and Mac” show airs during morning commute hours from 5 to 9am Mondays through Fridays, offering a mix of interviews, call-ins, and upbeat chatter on the sports scene locally and nationally. Four hours a day is a lot of time to fi ll and the schedule can be grueling.
Somehow Brian found time to write and publish two books, San Francisco Giants: 50 Years, and The Last Putt: 2 Teams, 1 Dream and a Freshman Named Tiger, the latter title about Tiger Woods’s freshman year at Stanford.
When he’s not massaging the airwaves or writing books or authoring a weekly column for Yahoo Sports, he spends time with his family, wife Candace, small son Declon and dog Oscar at their home in Oakland. OTAers are privileged to welcome this experienced and perceptive local sports commentator to our autumn, 2010, dinner gathering.

TIME OUT By Manny Agorastos, CAL ‘57
Media Genius ReviewedBy Manny Agorastos (for Ray Wilson)
Looking over the OTAers in attendance, our spring speaker, former Giants’ market-ing director Pat Gallagher, said it reminded him of a night-game crowd at Candlestick Park. After the laughter subsided, Pat went on to review his 33-year career with the San Francisco Giants. Hired to promote the team, Gallagher came up with several themes, one after another: the “Croix de Candlestick,” the “Crazy Crab,” “Humm Baby,” and many others. Weak Giants’ teams during the seventies and eighties, however, made life
diffi cult for Pat.A discouraged Bob Lurie was about to sell the franchise to a group from Florida, but a local partnership led by former OTA speak-er Peter Magowan stepped in and saved the day, eventually building, as we all know, a beautiful ball park near China Basin. Pat was involved in planning the new stadium from the start, and was responsible, as he admitted, for the infamous personal seat license or chartered seat plan. It was an informative and enlightening talk by a Giants’ insider, accompanied by the usual warm comradeship and Chef Burns’s haut cuisine.
