CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT AND SKILLS DAYS Year 8 The Year 8 curriculum day started some six weeks earlier when groups were formed and discussions concerning choice of charity were made. The process over the intervening weeks involved various team members designing posters, contacting the charities for information which was then included in a presentation to other groups, choosing an appropriate baton along with a costume to represent the charity of their choice. On the day the groups were a blaze of vibrant colour and enthusiastic energy.

Running for an hour in temperatures that touched 28°C the students involved showed amazing resilience, determination and commitment in a bid to pass the baton around the track at Brown’s Meadow as many times as possible.

They were unwavering in their efforts, displaying qualities that made the organising P.E. department very proud to be associated with such a worthwhile occasion. Batons travelled as far as 47 laps of the track in the 60 minutes – a total of almost 12 miles. The final task is to collect the sponsor money and ensure that so many worthwhile charities benefit from such a splendid event. Mr M Hart

SARIS As part of the Curriculum Enrichment and Skills days, staff were able to participate in the activities in a number of ways. Some staff took the opportunity to experience wearing a sari, and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Pictured are Mrs Sims, Mrs Haddrell and Mrs Hodgkin. CUSHIONS Textiles lessons have seen Year 7 students designing and making cushions. Two girls in 7C1 got inspiration for their unique designs from decor in their bedrooms. Libby Davis, pictured right, used colours for her owl to coordinate with her room, whilst Molly Dummett developed a sea theme with her cushion featuring an anchor.

END OF TERM Term ends on Tuesday 23 July. Students will be dismissed at

12.30pm. Students must remember to take home all their belongings.

WARHORSE A group of Year 9 students had an exciting visit to London last Tuesday. They took part in a workshop on puppetry,

before walking through central London to the New London Theatre to see the award-winning production of Warhorse. The workshop enabled them to gain an understanding of the role of the puppeteers, and how illusions can be created on stage. The students were selected for the effort and progress they had made throughout the year, and were rewarded with an inspiring trip, which should motivate them to aim high in the future! Mrs Knott

BOYS’ PE Year 8 Cricket Team Win South West Final The Year 8 cricket team recently represented Berkshire against eight other counties in the Chance to Compete 8-a-side South West Final at Bristol Grammar School. In the opening game against the team from Somerset, St Bart’s started slowly and did not bowl to their usual high standard and conceded 67 runs in 6 overs. However the team battled back strongly to tie the game with good innings from Jamie Maughan, Tom Murrell and James Bird. St Bart’s even had the chance to steal the game with 1 run needed from the last 2 balls. However both Tom Murrell and Oscar Day were run out and the team had to settle for the draw.

The team responded excellently with a comfortable win in their second game against the team from the Isle of Wight. Batting first St Bart’s again scored 67, which included 22 runs off the last over thanks to the aggressive batting of James Bird and the strong support of Luke Davies. The boys then bowled very well, restricting their opponents to only 49 runs and taking 6 wickets. The pick of the bowlers was Michael Seath, who took 3 wickets in his over. The win ensured that the team came top of their group and qualified for the winner’s pool. Weather had delayed the start of the tournament so the final games were reduced to an exciting 1 over per side game. In the first game St Bart’s bowled first and restricted their opponents from Wiltshire to only 9 runs. Jamie Maughan and James Bird comfortably reached the target in 4 balls. In the second game against the team from Buckinghamshire, St Bart’s scored a massive 27 runs thanks to

brilliant play from James Bird, who hit 3 sixes and a 4. Oscar Day also batted well in the over, hitting a boundary with his first ball. Their opponents weren’t able to get anywhere near the target and St Bart’s were crowned South West champions. The team now go on to represent the South West in the National Final at Northamptonshire County Cricket Club in September.

The team - James Bird, Jamie Maughan, Oscar Day, Michael Seath, Luke Davies, Olly Smithson, Archie Perks, Tom Murrell and Matt Smith. Mr Gibbons

GIRLS’ PE Rounders – Year 7 Year 7 girls have performed exceptionally well over this rounders season. With a great batting side St Bart’s created endless opportunities to grasp the win over their opponents. However, it has been their improvements as a fielding team that have secured comfortable wins against The Clere, John O’Gaunt, Theale Green, Little Heath, St Gabriel’s, Trinity, Park House and The Downs. Well done to all who have been involved this year:- Finola Mangan, Izzie Lainsbury, Alice Points, Millie Pope, Dani Reed, Sophie Harrop, Thea Manton, Molly Dummett, Emma Street, Katherine Wadge-Berrospi, Hannah Perry, Lauren Bell, Emily McDonagh and Megan Ryder. Superb performances and effort have resulted in St Bart’s taking gold in the Area Tournament as well as league winners. The league final highlighted their ability as a team winning against The Downs 24 – 6 ½ with player of the match Lauren Bell.

Rounders – Year 9 As a result of a great rounders season, Year 9 had the opportunity to represent West Berkshire in the Berkshire Games. On a wet and windy day the girls committed themselves with a positive attitude and a desire to win. The first few games saw St Bart’s get into their rhythm fielding and batting excellently, winning their games against Reading, Maidenhead and Windsor. Bracknell Forest hosted a solid team, however, St Bart’s fought equally well with some great fielding and batting which saw a very close victory 5 – 4 ½ . Wokingham were our greatest rivals showcasing a very good bowler, backstop, second base and fielding team which prevented St Bart’s from scoring highly. Despite this the girls kept calm and fielded well to reduce the number of rounders from some big batters. However their team were just too strong and beat St Bart’s 7-3. Our final game was a battle for silver. The girls threw everything at Slough and scored some good rounders, but after a valiant fielding innings St Bart’s fell short by ½ a rounder, losing 5 ½ - 5. The girls played brilliantly all day bringing home the bronze medal.

Team – Bobbi Lainsbury, Emily Brooker, Olivia Lockyear, Saffron Langley, Maia Brown, Sam Jarman, Alex Jarman, Annie Taylor, Jo Kirk, Saskia Spencer, Hannah Bousfield and Imani Asembo.

QUAD KIDS COUNTY FINAL

Wednesday 3 July at Wellington College Congratulations to the girls who took part in the Quad Kids County Finals. Having arrived at Wellington College and watched a superb opening ceremony to the school games competition, the athletes were taken to Bracknell athletics track to compete in their competition. Each athlete had to take part in four disciplines and scored points for their times and distances achieved – 100m, 800m, Vortex throw and long jump. The girls finished in first place which is an excellent result in a competition of this standard. Well done to L Bell, S Harrop, L Dove, M Pope and K Berrospi. Mrs L Leach
