CME/CE INFORMATIONStatement of NeedCardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the UnitedStates and imposes an ever increasing burden on health caresystems. Rapidly changing technology and the criteria for its usecontinue to be at the forefront in the diagnosis and treatment ofpatients presenting with possible cardiovascular disease. Due toadvancing technologies in cardiac imaging it is essential thatwe close the knowledge, competence and performance gaps bybringing together experts in the field to provide peer-to-peer educa-tion and interactive discussion through case-based, didactic andinteractive sessions.

Cardiologists, radiologists, technologists and other clinicians withan interest in cardiovascular disease will benefit from the variedformats at the SCCT 10th Annual Scientific meeting. SCCT hasdesigned the SCCT 10th Annual Scientific Meeting to address andnarrow the practice gaps of its members.

Overview and Objectives:The SCCT 10th Annual Scientific Meeting is designed to engagephysicians and healthcare professions interpreting cardiac CT ina comprehensive exploration of the most current developmentsin the field of cardiovascular CT principles, methodologies, appropriateness criteria and clinical practice. Didactic lectures,image-based case examples, and the research in cardiovascularCT are designed to increase the competence and performanceof the physician and technologist performing and interpretingcardiac CT. The annual meeting will focus on the technologicaladvances, as well as the potential applications and limitations ofcardiovascular CT.

At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should bebetter able to:

• Discuss with colleagues the parameters which result inmaximum image quality while minimizing radiation exposure during cardiac CT

• Identify potential common image artifacts which contributeto inappropriate analysis of cardiac CT scans

• Determine when an alternative imaging method would improve the diagnosis of a specific cardiac anomaly

• Critically evaluate those data which indicate potentialapplications of cardiac CT in other patient studies

• Discuss the appropriateness criteria with colleagues and patients• Evaluate the emerging research in cardiac CT to determine its

possible role in changing the current evidence-based protocols or stimulating additional research

Arthur S. Agatston Cardiovascular Disease Prevention AwardSCCT is pleased to present the Arthur S. Agatston Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Award to the following individuals. The awardis designed to promote the prevention of death from heart disease by recognizing individuals whose pioneering efforts have savedlives from a leading killer throughout the world, coronary artery disease.

Arthur S. Agatston, MD, FSCCT, FACC | Medical Director, Wellness & PreventionSouth Beach Preventive Cardiology Baptist Health South Florida | Miami FL Dr. Agatston literally “wrote the book” on quantifying coronary calcium as a predictor of heart attack and stroke, with studies initiated at a time when culturallycoronary artery intervention was paramount and prevention of disease was of secondary importance. His visionary work has dramatically improved the practiceof medicine and the lives of millions worldwide.

In partnership with Dr. Warren Janowitz, Dr. Agatston’s work on non-invasive calcium scoring fundamentally changed cardiology and imaging. He is one of thedevelopers of the electron beam tomography scan (EBT) to detect coronary artery disease. Calcium measurements on EBT scans—and, now multi-slice gatedCT examinations are given a numerical value named the "Agatston score," co-developed with Dr. Janowitz. This score is used in clinical practice worldwide. It has been used in virtually all publications in this field. The score has over 600 citations in PubMed, the primary medical research database of manuscripts.

“The South Beach Diet,” Dr. Agatston’s first nonacademic work, provided a groundbreaking prevention message and strategy. He knew that his patients werenot faring well on standard diets, and that there was much more he could do to help them avoid heart attacks and stroke. For many years, Dr. Agatston care-fully studied research about lipids, diets, blood sugar and insulin response. The outcome was “The South Beach Diet .”The word spread, and the result is theworldwide success of “The South Beach Diet” in improving the health of countless millions worldwide. His initial book, and subsequent books dealing with pre-vention, have sold more than 25 million copies worldwide.

It is thus fitting that the award founded thanks to Dr. Agatston’s vision and generosity be awarded to him on the Society's tenth anniversary.

Bruce Brundage, MD, FACC | Heart Institute of the Cascades | Bend OR During his distinguished career at UC San Francisco, UCLA and the Heart Institute of the Cascades, Dr. Brundage has become one of the most renownedcardiologists in the world. He has been at the forefront of efforts to advance the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease through rigorous research, pioneering data registries, and large-scale clinical trials. Having served as director of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center cardiac catheterization lab earlier inhis career, Dr. Brundage brought his unique perspective to bear in advancing application of non-invasive CT technology as a critical component of cardiovascularpatient management. He was one of the first investigators to realize the potential power of CT in quantifying coronary atherosclerosis. His efforts were crucialin the early development of CT scanning of the coronary arteries.

Matthew J. Budoff, MD, FSCCT, FACC | Professor of Medicine, UCLA | Endowed Chair of Preventive CardiologyProgram Director, Division of Cardiology | Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute | Los Angeles CA Dr. Budoff is an international leader in development of cardiac CT, including groundbreaking work on the application of calcium scoring to patients at-risk for cardiacevents. He has been principal investigator for numerous large major clinical trials and has authored over 600 scholarly publications. Dr. Budoff is a founding mem-ber and Past President of SCCT. His leadership in the field of coronary artery calcium scanning, both early on recognizing the value of imaging to recognizedisease and evaluate its burden, as well as his ongoing efforts over decades as an innovator and thought leader is widely recognized. He has been one of the mosteffective advocates of the use of coronary calcium scoring, and played a principal role in bringing calcium scanning into the guidelines of the ACC and AHA.His contributions to the literature regarding the value of coronary artery calcium scanning have had a major impact on the use of this method throughout the world.

Tracy Q. Callister, MD, FSCCT | Founder, Tennessee Heart & Vascular Institute, P.C. | Hendersonville TN Dr. Callister is an internationally recognized leader in the field of cardiac CT. In 1984, he formed Tennessee Heart, dedicated to bringing the highest quality careto communities throughout Tennessee. During the ensuing 31 years Dr. Callister has exemplified the highest ideals of dedicated, community-based patient care, having served tens of thousands of patients. His early recognition of the value of CT coronary calcium scanning to detect atherosclerosis and apply it in patientsand then follow the outcomes of these patients form the bedrock to our strategies to prevent coronary artery disease and its progression today. Dr. Callister isa true visionary, whose profound intellect, clinical intuition, generosity, and creativity, when combined with his charisma, have led to his having a profound influ-ence on the development of the field of cardiac CT and its leaders.

Warren Robert Janowitz, MD, JD, FACC | Medical Director and Chief, Nuclear Medicine | Baptist Health System | Radiology Associates of South Florida | Miami FLDr. Janowitz, in partnership with his close friend Dr. Agatston, was a co-developer of calcium scoring for early detection of coronary atherosclerosis. Their workpublished in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology in 1990 has become among the most cited articles in medicine. He led research and authoredlandmark articles on cardiac CT, writing or contributing to hundreds of scholarly publications that have shaped the field since its inception. Dr. Janowitz contin-ues to lead development of cardiac CT, regularly lecturing on topics involving cardiovascular diagnosis at national and international meetings. Dr. Janowitz is atrue “Renaissance Man,” having become one of the world’s leading nuclear medicine physicians, an expert on biomedical engineering, board certified in nuclearmedicine and internal medicine, and in his “spare time” earned a J.D. law degree magna cum laude.

Paolo Raggi MD, FSCCT, FACC, FAHA, FACP, FASNC | Chair of Cardiac Research & Director, Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute | Edmonton AB Dr. Raggi is an accomplished clinician, researcher and educator, and has contributed greatly to advancement of the field of multi-modality imaging. His clinicalpractice has focused on prevention of coronary artery disease. Dr. Raggi’s research interests are preventive cardiology, surrogate markers and imaging ofatherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease in patients affected by end-stage renal disease. A nationally and internationally recognized clinical investigator,Dr. Raggi’s research has contributed to major advances in the field. Dr. Raggi’s work in establishing the prognostic value of coronary calcium scanning played aprofound role in the acceptance of the method for the earliest detection of coronary artery disease and assessing risk. His work in establishing gender basedpercentiles for a patient’s coronary calcium score became the basis for reporting of calcium studies and recommendations for therapeutic management.

John A. Rumberger, PhD, MD, FSCCT | Director of Cardiac Imaging, The Princeton Longevity Center | Princeton NJ Dr. Rumberger is one of the world’s leading authorities on cardiac and vascular imaging using electron beam computer tomography and CT scanning. He spe-cializes in preventive cardiology and cardiovascular imaging. Formerly, Dr. Rumberger was a clinician and dedicated educator at the University of Iowa and theMayo Clinic, where he became a leader in the development of electron-beam tomography of the heart. During his career he has published nearly 500 scientificpapers. Dr Rumberger’s merging of knowledge of anatomy and pathology of coronary artery disease to the patient care environment (measuring coronarycalcium as an indicator of the presence and severity of disease) provided a crucial foundation for its clinical role. His insight into the practical clinical applicationof coronary calcium scanning had strong impact on the rapid early acceptance of the method as a valuable tool in clinical practice. Dr. Rumberger is creditedwith establishing the categories of coronary plaque burden as measured by the Agatston score which have become the standard for research analysis, guidelines, and patient care recommendations throughout the world.
