ULLY REEARC LAORATRIESPOSTDOCTORAL SCIENTIST PROGRA

Eli Lilly and CompanyThe LILLY RESEARCH LABORATORIES, a Division of Eli Lilly and Company, is offering postdoctoralresearch opportunities in several areas of biology, pharmacology, and chemistry. PostdoctoralScientists will work in close association with Lilly scientists who are involved in the basic researchprocess of drug discovery. Publication and presentation of results will be an integral part of theprogram. This postdoctoral experience is designed to give individuals in-depth research training ina focused area of biology and/or chemistry. The program will also provide an opportunity to becomeacquainted with the drug development process within the pharmaceutical industry. PostdoctoralScientists will be expected to participate fully in the conceptual and design phases of projects, within the following areas:

Biochemical Pharmacology/HepaticLipid Metabolism

The postdoctoral scientist will study changes in hepatic lipid metabolism induced by drugs andother chemicals. The research will examine the roles of mitochondrial and peroxisomal fatty acidoxidation in the development and regression of fatty changes in the liver, and the relevance ofalterations in lipid metabolism to the induction of peroxisomal fatty acid oxidation. Candidatesshould have training in pharmacology, biochemistry, or related discipline. Experience in lipidmetabolism is preferred but not required.

Muscle Metabolism ResearchScientist with training in muscle growth, muscle physiology, and molecular biology will performbasic research on the regulation and control of skeletal muscle protein synthesis and degradation. The research will examine the effect of beta-adrenergic agonists on muscle protein metabolism.A strong background in biochemistry and molecular biology is desired.

Glycoprotein Structural ResearchThe postdoctoral scientist will use nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and other physical orchemical methods to pursue structural questions relating to protein carbohydrates. The scientist willcollaborate with researchers involved in the structure elucidation of a wide variety of natural productsof pharmaceutical interest, as well as with scientists seeking to evaluate the role of glycosylationin protein function. Experience in applying modern NMR techniques in studies of glycoproteincarbohydrates is desirable.

Recombinant Protein ResearchThe postdoctoral scientist will study the enzymatic cleavage of proteins produced by recombinantDNA technology with the goal of obtaining desired protein products. The scientist must have astrong background in enzyme kinetics and protein chemistry and will have the opportunity to gainexperience in enzyme immobilization, protein sequencing, and molecular biology.

Postdoctoral appointments are of one-year duration and are renewable for a second year withmutual agreement. Candidates with no more than one previous postdoctoral experience areencouraged to apply.

%JCIICLI%w)Is ResearciAtIts BestAs one of the premier biopharmaceutical companies in the UnitedStates, the research opportunities at Genetics Institute are un-paralleled. Collaborating with the most respected scientists in thefield, you will work on the leading edge of today's most innovativeapplicadon of scientific discovery - the development of humantherapeutics through recombinant DNA technology. In addition to the dynamic strides we've made in the research anddevelopment of these therapeutics, we have the capabilides toperform large-scale clinical manufacturing which affords our scien-tists the unique opportunity to watch their findings develop fromconcepdon through completion - that is research at its best.

PROTEIN PURIFICATIONWe are seeking a creative indMdual to develop purification schemesfor novel pharmaceuticals, such as blood cell differentiadon factorsand thrombolytic agents. Suitable applicants will have a Ph.D.degree, a strong background in protein biochemistry and exten-sive experience in protein purification. The position carries directresponsibility for developing procedures for purification of bothbacterial and mammalian expressed proteins, up to the point atwhich clinical production commences. Beyond this point there willbe on-going responsibility for biochemical aspects of the large-scaleproduction process. It is essential that applicants for this keyposition have an understanding of purification scale-up and theability to effectively interact with personnel in other disciplines, especiallyengineering and production. There will also be considerable opportunity to interactwith peptide and carbohydrate chemists, as well as cell biologists, In exploringstructure/function relationships of proteins of interest.

STRUCTURAL PROTEIN CHEMISTRYOpportunities exist for motivated and talented individuals at all levels (B.S., M.S.,Ph.D.), Ideally with backgrounds In structural protein chemistry, e.g., proteinsequencing, amino acid composition analysis, pepdde mapping strategies andprotein modificadon. However, candidates with strong chemistry backgroundsand skills in analytical chromatography and instrumentation will also be considered. This position will offer scientists the challenge of interacting with experts in otherdisciplines (e.g., mass spectrometry, carbohydrate chemistry, protein biochemistryand cell biology) and the responsibility for taking a project from conception tocompletion.

BIOPOLYMER MASS SPECTROMETRYWe are currentiy accepting applications from scientists with expertise in massspectrometry to undertake projects involving the characterization of mammalianand bacterially expressed proteins. Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in a chemicalor biochemical discipline and appropriate training and experience In biopolymermass spectrometry, preferably with sector-type instrumentation. Responsibilitiesinclude the development of novel instrumental and chemical mass spectrometricmethods to define the protein and/or carbohydrate structures of cell differentia-tion factors and thrombolytic agents. The successful candidate will be expectedto assume responsibility for the planning and execution of scientific projects. Sincethis position Involves substandal interaction with sciendsts from other disciplines, applicants must have strong interpersonal skills as well as excellent oral and writ-ten communication skills.Genetics Insdtute offers an attractive compensation and benefits package in-duding equity pardtcpaton and an excellent opportunky for personal andprofessinal growth. Four fraction collectors aren't too many

ifyou're trying to please 98,579 scientists.

All four let you enter fraction size by time, drop, volume - even directly in ml if you have an Isco WIZperistaltic pump. Isco fraction collectors are coldroomproof and hold any common test tube or miniscintillation vial. All but Cygnet also hold 28 mm vials, have LED readouts, and can collect from multiplecolumns.

WorkhorsesThe new Retrievere IV is our fraction collector for big

jobs. It can hold 25 mm (70 ml!) tubes, carries up to 266smaller tubes, and with optional adapters can collectfrom up to 20 sources at a time.

Retriever II is the Isco medium-capacity linear fractioncollector. It holds up to 174 tubes but needs onlyasquarefoot of your bench space - perfect for crowded labs. We've made about 20,000 instruments using thepatented Retriever linear mechanism and many are stillgoing strong after 15 years.

BudgetCygnet is by far the least expensive fraction collector

you can buy. Yet it still has all the basic features, includingdrop counting. Stainless steel reels hold 100 tubes in a bigrange of sizes.

SmartFOXY' matches fractions toyour chromatogram -not

to the clock. It rejects void volumes, locates and saves

desired peaks, and controls valves and pumps to makegradients or automate your system. For HPLC, collectsuccessive injections without resetting, and overlayrepeated injections of the same sample to collectidentical peaks in the same tubes. The sloped keyboard,1 2-digit display, and logical programming make it all easyto do.You can't beat an Isco fraction collector for reliability,

capability, or price. And you can't match the Isco 3-yearwarranty. Phone toll free (800)228-4250 for our

complete catalog. Or write Isco, Inc., P.O. Box 5347,Lincoln, NE 68505.
