Dear Loyal Readers,

Thank you for downloading this month’s Off Registration!

We just had a great Kickstarter, and we’d liek to thank all our Off Registraiton Readers who came out to support it! THE BOOK OF DRAGONS was a resounding success, and if you missed your copy, we will be debuting it at SPX in Bethesda, Maryland at the Marriott Bethesda North Hotel & Conf. Center on September 13 and 14. I will be there with writer Scott O. Brown and artist Mal Jones at table W68B.

While you’re waiting, enjoy this great issue featuring our cover artist, Daniel Govar! We also have a new story by Scott O. Brown and illustrated by Horacio Lalia called “Last One Standing,” in which the last Amazon exacts justice, and the penultimate chapter of their graphic novel RED ICE, where General Hand does what it takes to save the planet, including vivisecting our heroes!

And finally, we have a new contributor, the talented Aaron Pittman, with his original short story “Animal Bones,” about a young boy with a secret pet or two that he’d rather you not know about.

We hope you enjoy the issue, and don’t forget to visit our sponsors Single Bound Studios and the Mobile Arts Council!

Sincerely,April BrownPublisher/Owner

Off-Background: Daniel Govar

Our cover artist, Daniel Govar, is known for his work with Marvel and Dynamite, as well as his Zuda series AZURE. He is also a prolific commission artist who works the convention circuit hard.

We took advantage of some of his down time be-tween conventions to talk to him about his career and to see what else he’s up to.

1) For those of us who don’t know you, why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got into comics to begin with?

About me - well, I’m an Army brat who was born in Arkansas, have lived in Hawaii, Canada, and various parts throughout the US. I guess I’ve been into comics since elementary school? I’m pretty sure that’s when I got hooked. If you mean illustrating them and creating them professionally - that would be since about 2009 . I won DC Comics Zuda Competition for my comic AZURE which I entered on a bet from a friend. Before that I had done animation, illustration. and concept art for clients like Sony and the SciFi channel (now SyFy).

2) You have worked with some big names and have creator owned projects, not to mention your com-missions. How do you find time to everything? And how do you relieve your stress from working long hours?

Yeah I’ve been fortunate to make friends with some talented people and am working on some fun projects

and properties that kid Dan could only dream about. I love doing commissions - it’s something different to draw every day and keeps you on your toes :) I think that’s necessary as a comic artist - being versatile and constantly pushing yourself to be faster. Knowing your speed and being able to estimate is really important in this business. Commissions help you refine that. On stress - I run, hike, go for walks with my dog - at least 3 times a day. Working long hours really doesn’t stress me much. What is it they say about dong what you

love and never working a day in your life? It’s pretty true. Things really only feel like stress and work when you take on too much - something I’ve learned not to do.

3) Can you talk about any of your current projects? Or is everything hush hush?

Good question. I can say I’m doing something for Marvel. I just did work on couple of issues of Tha-nos: A God Up There is Listening, and storyboarded some of the infinite movie tie-ins. I recently finished

6 issues of Grimm for Dynamite, and worked on a few pitches for writers (A scifi thing, and two horror/adventure projects). I’ve also been doing some work on project I’ve wanted to Kickstart for the last two years. I’m just about ready to unveil that but have to plan it around my various deadlines. I suspect it will be launched sometime around mid September.

4) What is it like working with Ron Perazza on Relaunch and The Road that Goes On. Those two projects have such different styles but yet still have your flare. Have you ever noticed that?

That is literally some of the most creative stuff ever. Us getting together usually has us both walking away fired up to try things we haven’t before and with a clear purpose. Both of those have been loads of fun, and I wish we both had more time for more of those. We are both working on Marvel stuff now, and while we are pretty far along on RELAUNCH Chapter 2 - our paid projects take precedence :) It’s interesting that you mention that about the styles. We did want them to be different - to suit the tale. I think the color is approached the same way in both and perhaps that is part of it?

5) Do you have a piece of art that has special meaning to you? And why is it so special? This doesn’t have to be a piece you created but art in general.

Page 8: Off Registration 10
Page 9: Off Registration 10

One I created - yes - but it’s not one I share. It’s some-thing I’ve never scanned or photographed. I think there is power sometimes in NOT sharing work. I tend to give art to friends and family for gifts, and most of these I don’t take pics of. These tend to be more per-sonal. I have so much original art from fellow artists and people I admire...I suspect most of these would

fall into this category? If you mean who are my favor-ite artists and favorite pieces, I could go on forever....

6) So criss-crossing across the States for conventions. During your travels where is your favorite place to return to each year? What is the one show that you would never miss?

I do about 10-15 conventions a year - mostly comic book, some fantasy. My favorite con is probably a toss up between Dragon Con and Heroes Con. They are very different but I love the vibe of both of them. In terms of places - New Orleans, hands down. I make it a point to go back there at least once a year - gener-ally around the con they have, just so I can pal around with friends. As far as art is concerned - I will never

miss a Heroes Con.

7) Who had influenced you the most in your career?

This is tough...most of my influences will probably be classical artists - DaVinci, Rembrandt, Mucha, Rack-ham with some modern illustrators thrown in for measure - Vess, Kaluta, Sienkowietcz, Windsor-Smith,

etc. I can tell you a recent highlight for me was chat-ting with Charles Vess and having him tell me my piece was his favorite in the Heroes Con art auction. That’s art fuel for me for the next couple of years. Really there are so many artists I admire - some in the digital art world as well I am failing to mention. Our styles are constantly evolving - based on all we see around us, so I find now I tend to NOT focus on anoth-er artist’s work too much.

8) If you didn’t have to worry about money, what would be your dream project? Would you do the whole thing alone or have a team to work with? If a team who would be on your dream team?

Page 10: Off Registration 10

This is a tough one! I have different dream projects. If we are talking work for a publisher and an existing property - it would be a story about Kitty Pryde and Lockheed set in the future. I would certainly work with others but I would like to have a hand in the plot and certainly the design. I’d probably want Matt Wil-son on colors - that guy is a genius. If we are talking about my own property, it would probably be the project I have been working on a Kickstarter for. Hon-estly I have 3 of these types of projects on my idea book that I keep massaging when the thought strikes.

9) We all know that social media has become a part of our daily lives. How do you balance between working, promoting yourself, and friends? Any tips for people out there having issues with doing this?

This is a tough one. I try and devote one half hour each day to what I call “promotion”. Generally this

consists of sharing current/new or old work across the various social platforms and posting links to articles and events I am tied to as well as corresponding to fans on these networks. I devote an hour a day (roughly) to correspondence - this means emails, interviews, commission requests. When i get over-whelmed I hire help to manage the correspondence as there are times when I spend all day answering emails and doing no art at all. Around the holidays I get a lot art requests for gift pieces, and I have a working spreadsheet of all commissions I owe. To date I have not missed a single one.

10) Besides art, what about Sandor? Does he get jealous when he can’t get your full attention and you have to work?

Yeah - he is a needy guy, but thankfully my dog (box-er), is a little older now. He sleeps a lot during the day

Page 11: Off Registration 10

and he is easier to wear out with frisbee and a long hike. We exercise a lot and are active so that keeps him from being in my business all day. Additionally he forces me to actually get up and walk around. Beyond that i have awesome neighbors with dogs and a big fenced in yard, so its nice to have them wear each other out :)

11) One last question. If you could do everything all over again, would you do everything the same?

I would have gotten a dog sooner. :)

Thank you for speaking with us, Daniel!

I must say, Adonia, you are

The armory?

It gives weight to the story.

They are merely trifles.

I kp them for sentiment.

They are more than trifles... they’re
