Change of Date
Please note that the August trial is now being held on the 21st of the month and not the 28th as previously advertised.
Facebook The Viking 4x4 Club is now on Facebook. Just have a search for Viking Four Wheel Drive and you‟ll find us there. You can make a comment and upload photos too if you wish and of course you can click the Like box and make us your friend. Hopefully this will get us a bit more publicity and encourage you all to keep checking up on what‟s happening. I was a bit disappointed with the response to this with only a mere 12 people liking us. Oh well you can‟t win „em all!
Committee Meeting At the Social Evening on 3rd August there will be Committee Meeting as well. Topics for the agenda include:
poor attendance at trials, poor attendance at the pub
night – should we look at a change of venue?
LRS developments AGM agenda Trial sites for next year
(Boughton Estate)
Christmas dinner – awards night
EEddiittoorriiaall
If you can be at the Committee
Meeting on Wednesday 3rd
August please do make every
effort to attend as there’s quite
a bit to discuss. Of special note
is the possibility that the club
may become what you could
term ‘land agents’ for a superb
off road site in the midlands
area. What to know more ?
Then pop along to the
Committee Meeting.
Despite the changeable
weather the long days are
great for offroading and
several of us have had
greenlaning trips out and
about in the local area. Its
great to get out and see the
countryside from a new angle.
I don’t know if you made it to
the Billing LRO show recently.
There was lots to see and do
with lots of bargains to be had
if you chose carefully amongst
the stalls. I didn’t get much
only a new grill for my snorkel
but it was good to go and see
what was on offer and watch
the twist-off Ramp competition.
Due to Augusts’ trial being
earlier in the month on the
21st
and my holidays it’s
unlikely that the magazine
will be out much before the
actual trail date. So if you get
your copy by post don’t panic
as it will be there eventually
but not much before the trial,
which is at Billesdon.

Chairman’s Chat
Hi All,
We are already into July - where
does the time go – and are into
the summer holiday period, so I
guess many of you are thinking
more about saving your cash for
you summer holiday than on
4x4 events. This is
understandable of course, but I
would like to ask everyone to
make an effort to attend trials
as the numbers are beginning to
dwindle. What this means is
that if the numbers are low, we
can not cover the cost of hiring
the venues.
The Bullring Farm event was
great, it’s an excellent site of
off-roading but we made a loss
on that one. Fortunately, it
wasn’t a big loss, but we can not
keep running at a loss.
This year, we have attracted
loads of new members thanks
to the success of the LRS
challenge series, so I would
appeal to the challenge guys to
go along to a trial and give this a
go. I always find it useful as a
shakedown test to make sure
everything is running properly
before entering the next
challenge.
Though the numbers at trials
are low, the same can not be
said for the challenge scene. The
LRS event at Duck End was yet
another resounding success – I
even managed to finish the
event - with a full entry capped
at 36 vehicles, with all entry fees
paid up in advance. The
challenge scene is vibrant and
has a buzz of excitement about
it. It also attracts sponsors and
the Duck End event was
individually sponsored by
Staffordshire 4x4 and they were
there at the end to hand over
some very generous prizes.
The main Land Rover shows all
happen in the summer months
and this year, I again went to
Billing Aquadrome this year. I
have to say that it was better
this year with more stalls than
last year. As per usual, I spent
more than I wanted to but all
the bits I bought will be put to
good use.
As you will be aware, we have a
Committee Meeting on the first
Wednesday in August. This is
open to all members so that
everyone has an opportunity to
raise any Viking issue in the AOB
section. There are a few issues
we need to discuss, but possibly
the most exciting item is the
possibility for the Viking Club to
have sole rights on two large
venues owned by the same land
owner near Kettering. Please try
to be there so that you can have
your say.
That’s all for now – Pip.
HELP! Have you got the Viking Flag?
I guess that someone has taken it put up at a show or at another event but I have no idea where it is now. If you have it, can you please bring it to the August committee meeting or to the next event. Many thanks, Pip.
HOW TO START A FIGHT
One year, I decided to buy
my mother-in-law a
cemetery plot as
a Christmas gift.
The next year, I didn't
buy her a gift.
When she asked me why, I
replied,
"Well, you still haven't
used the gift I bought you
last year!"
And that's how the fight
started.....
I took my wife to a
restaurant.
The waiter, for some
reason, took my order
first.
"I'll have the rump
steak, rare, please."
He said, "Aren't you
worried about the mad
cow?"
"Nah, she can order for
herself."
And that's when the fight
started.....

LRS Challenge. Staffordshire 4x4 Ltd Round 4 - Duck End History is littered with fine examples of brave men selflessly sacrificing themselves for a noble cause. Before they can do this, they must of course have a cause worthy enough for them to martyr themselves for. The LRS Challenge series has now become just such a cause While bravely facing down the menace of steep rocky slopes, brambles and thorn bushes, Andy Dunnicliffe and Dave Middleton were setting out before the event when they jumped out of their truck and landed right on top of a wasps nest. They both received several dozen stings and were clearly in some considerable pain but they valiantly carried on and worked hard all the next day to help run the event. True heroes! On a gloriously hot, sunny July day, the LRS Challenge series rolled up at the
Duck End off-road site near Kettering. This event was individually sponsored by Staffordshire 4x4 Ltd. They are a new company based in Newcastle Under Lyme and cater for all manner of 4x4 requirements, supplying 4x4 kit and services, they are also approved builders of the iconic Ibex vehicles. There had been a few problems in the
run up to the event, not with the venue itself but in finding an area large enough to accommodate the whole LRS entourage in one area. Thankfully, a neighbouring farmer came to the rescue and allowed us to use a field which bordered the site. As per usual the organising team ensured that everything ran like clockwork and the driver‟s briefing was held dead on time. At 10.00am, everyone headed off in all directions into the site to hunt for the punches. Duck End is not a particularly wooded
site but for some reason, the punches were initially quite hard to find. At the start of a challenge event, one usually comes across no end of vehicles dangling from a punch here and there, but on this occasion there were trucks driving in all directions and no one knew where the punches were. Of course, this didn‟t last for very long and once competitors started to locate the
punches, there were tell-tale tracks to indicate that there may be something lurking in the nearby undergrowth. As well as the usual punch hunt, the organisers had set up a short timed special section and all competitors had to fill in a log sheet at the start of the event to declare what time they wanted to do the special. The clock would start at the allotted time whether the competitor was there or not. If the competitor did not get there on time, they would accrue the maximum score for the section. It was a clever plan to
make sure that there was enough time to get everyone through within the 6 hour event and no one would have to queue up to wait their turn. It was a double loop section, designed for two trucks to run at the same time with a cross-over in the middle. The idea was great, but one loop was much shorter than the other, so there were occasions where the guys starting on the short loop caught up with the guys on the long loop and were held up on the section. Hopefully, the loops will be of more equal lengths in future to avoid this problem. As per usual there were the inevitable breakdowns but nowhere near as much as usual. The LRS facebook group was alive with tales of the day. Craig Byford of Team 16 reported having a puncture while the truck was still on the trailer. Paul Lambeth of Team 21 reported a broken front winch line on their first punch, but managed to soldier on with just the rear. Si Sagar of Team 12 stated that a dunking in some deep water somehow managed to fix a problem with a rear winch. He managed to mangle the rear end of his
JULY 2011
Page 8
truck and is now contemplating a tray-back conversion. Roger Smith of Team 13 reported losing his brakes and common sense as he got lost while driving around the special stage. (It had tape around it to guide you Roger!) Andrew Shrive of Team 9 remarked that everything went well for a change. They managed to get to the end of the event with just one break in the rear winch line.
As per usual the proceedings came to a close at 16.00, with several of the winch-men wilting under the hot sunny conditions. Many of them also looked like they had been wrestling with tigers as they had been savaged by the brambles on the site. Kevin Bradley again crunched the numbers in record time and announced the results within 30 minutes of the
finish. Things were close at the top of class 1 with the second place team of Ben Mark and Chris Sutcliffe less than one punch score behind the victorious Carl Bunting and Craig Howard. In class 2, Simon Lee and Jonathan Wood trounced the opposition as has become the norm with 6303 points. However 2nd to 5th places were very close, with just one punch score between them. Once again, the class act of the event and by far and away the clear winners in class 3 were Allen and David Sharpe. Not only did they have a colossal 7278 points, but they managed to collect all 50 punches a full 45 minutes before the finish time. What do these guys have for breakfast? Having said this, the ever improving Wayne Newton and Simon Allen finished a very strong second and were less than 1000 points behind the
Sharpes. The recipient of the Timbertown Trophies Best Photo competition for her photo taken at the last event was Catherine Smith. The guys from event sponsors Staffordshire 4x4 were there to hand over the very generous prizes to each of the class winning teams and series sponsor Derrick Johnson
proprietor of LRS handed out the winning trophies. As per usual a great time was had by all, the LRS series is now on its summer break and will reconvene on September 4th at a new site at Shurdlington near Cheltenham. Once again a huge thanks to all the marshals without whom we just could not operate. For more information see the LRS Challenge website.

Issuu
Issuu is the on-line site where we publish this magazine.
I could just email you all a copy of the magazine and you can read it
on your PC in pdf format. However, I thought that the unique page
turning views of Issuu and the fact that we can embed the whole
magazine in the Viking website was
worth the extra hassle of me uploading the magazine to the site.
I can also get some statistics of how many people have read the
magazine and as you can see from
the graph above most people read it as soon as it comes out but then
there‟s a blip in the graph just before the trial as people check the
directions. Some members have said that they
cannot get a print out of a page,
particularly the directions to a site. I was under the impression that
this was possible if you joined Issuu – its free – then the print button
would work and you can also
download a copy to print off from your PC.
If this is not working as it should then please do let me know and I‟ll
see what I can do to help matters
along.

YOU EVER BEEN GUILTY OF LOOKING AT OTHERS YOUR OWN AGE AND THINKING, SURELY I CAN'T LOOK THAT OLD? WELL.....YOU'LL LOVE THIS ONE! MY NAME IS ALICE SMITH AND I WAS SITTING IN THE WAITING ROOM FOR MY FIRST APPOINTMENT WITH A NEW DENTIST. I NOTICED HIS DENTAL DIPLOMA WHICH BORE HIS FULL NAME. SUDDENLY, I REMEMBERED A TALL, HANDSOME, DARK HAIRED BOY WITH THE SAME NAME HAD BEEN IN MY SECONDARY SCHOOL CLASS SOME 30-ODD YEARS AGO. COULD HE BE THE SAME GUY THAT I HAD A SECRET CRUSH ON, WAY BACK THEN? UPON SEEING HIM, HOWEVER, I QUICKLY DISCARDED ANY SUCH THOUGHT. THIS BALDING, GREY HAIRED MAN WITH THE DEEPLY LINED FACE WAS FAR TOO OLD TO HAVE BEEN MY CLASSMATE. AFTER HE EXAMINED MY TEETH, I ASKED HIM IF HE HAD ATTENDED MORGAN PARK SECONDARY SCHOOL . 'YES, YES I DID. I'M A MORGANNER! ' HE BEAMED WITH PRIDE. 'WHEN DID YOU LEAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE?' I ASKED HE ANSWERED, IN 1965. WHY DO YOU ASK? 'YOU WERE IN MY CLASS!' I EXCLAIMED.
HE LOOKED AT ME CLOSELY. THEN THAT UGLY, OLD, BALD, WRINKLED, FAT ARSED, GREY HAIRED, DECREPIT, BASTARD ASKED.... 'WHAT DID YOU TEACH?'
An old, blind cowboy wanders into
an all-girl biker bar by mistake.
He finds his way to a bar stool and
orders some coffee.
After sitting there for a while, he
yells to the waiter, "Hey, you wanna
hear a blonde joke?"
The bar immediately falls absolutely
silent.
In a very deep, husky voice, the
woman next to him says,
"Before you tell that joke, Cowboy, I
think it is only fair, considering that
you are blind, that you should know
five things:
1. The bartender is a blonde girl
with a baseball bat.
2. The bouncer is a blonde girl.
3. I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound
blonde woman with a black belt in
karate.
4. The woman sitting next to me is
blonde and a professional
weightlifter.
5. The lady to your right is blonde
and a professional wrestler.
Now, think about it seriously,
Mister. Do you still wanna tell that
joke?"
The blind cowboy thinks for a
second, shakes his head, and
mutters,
"No...not if I'm gonna have to
explain it five times."
My wife was hinting about
what she wanted for our
upcoming anniversary.
She said, "I want
something shiny that goes
from 0 to 150 in about 3
seconds."
I bought her a bathroom
scale…and that’s how the
fight started!

Reports From BullRing
Farm Trial
Showroom
First time I have been to Harbury and was greeted by Graham and
the happy campers on arrival on the Saturday morning to set up,
later on was i glad they were there!
Within 5 minutes of riding around looking for a site to start on we got
stuck and had to winch ourselves
out. First section was laid out then most of the second but driving it I
decided a 3rd crossing of the “dry” gully would be a good place for the
1 gate. Wrong, I ended up nose
down in a big mud hole completely stuck. After some searching my
helpers found Graham who came to the rescue and dragged us out.
Having set up 4 sections we headed
home thinking we would probably loose people between sections
tomorrow.
We started with only 2 competitors, Donna and Chaze and were
through the first and second
sections picking up points and Chaze being shaken apart on the
deep cross axles. At that point Dave and Clayton appeared
through the trees having made a
huge journey from Spalding. This meant we had 4 drivers all in
different classes. Unfortunately the regs say that we had to award 10
point each for the first missed
section but the guys were still able to drive the first two ( after
coughing up £5 late fee ! ). Dave‟s morning went from bad to worse as
we heard a crash and he re papered with the remains of a spot
light hanging off his grill and was
immediately awarded the Showroom Tree Hugger of the
Month award.
Reversal of 2 was very slippy with many points being picked up in the
muddy conditions.
4 Was a reversal of 1 and everyone was aware of Dave‟s tree in this
direction but in avoiding this Donna
and Chaze picked up points in the
ruts. Undeterred Dave made it with a fag paper between aluminium
and wood again to finish the section clear. Clayton picked up a
7.
An early lunch was called and what
a difference a morning of sunshine on the upper end of the site made
to the afternoons sections.
At section 5 the one muddy stretch leading to a tight left had
completely dried and the field cruised round for 4 clears.
Controversy raged at the reverse
when we were not sure if Dave and Clayton had picked up points or (
Kevin to adjudicate ! ) so the main event was Clayton emulating his
father by coming into contact with another vertical timber structure (
not a telegraph pole ).
For 7 we used half of the RTV
section by which time a good size whole had been carved but all got
through except Donna who was a little tentative with the right foot
and collected a 4. Less said about Chaze attempting an alternative,
ambitious, route to the start gate.
There was no messing on the reverse and everyone cleared.
Deciding to call it a day we used
another RTV section as a non points scoring section, thanks for
leaving it out .
PS Richard and Dan. Donna has the canes etc so we will need to collect for set up at Newton Lodge. Liaise with whoever is setting up for the other groups for site access etc. I may not be there so make sure someone takes the kit to set up at the next event please.
RTV
No one can accuse Graham and Sue of being tight but the other
Sunday was a different matter altogether! Tight was not the word
for it as we squeezed in between the trees on section 1 trying
desperately not to leave paintwork
or anything metal on the bark, not that that would have deterred Chris
from ploughing through the
undergrowth! Section 1 was very, very tight up the hill through the
trees and equally as tight if not more so coming back down. The
damage to Graham‟s Discos Alpine
window done when setting up bore testament to just how tight it was
and we certainly did not want to replicate that! We threaded our
way up through those trees and
back down again very, very carefully with most cars picking up
points along the way.
But I digress! I had an adventure on the way to the site even before
the trialling started! Andy Shrive
had suggested we do a few greenlanes on the way there and so
we did. They were good lanes with a mixture of tree line tracks and
open field tracks all with a firm
base. I also saw two Range Rover Evokes, Land Rover‟s newest model
and not yet on sale in the showrooms, out for an early
morning spin. I guess being near to Gaydon might have had something
to do with that.
Not having been to Bull Ring Farm
before I wasn‟t sure what to expect. The trees in section 1 & 2
were not a great beginning and I
was picking up too many points. Sections 3& 4 were better although
tricky in a different way. Graham and Sue used the big hill off to the
left of the car park which had a
really steep section in it and then along the bottom of the valley. Not
too bad one way and I got clear but
JULY 2011
Page 13
coming back I didn‟t even get as far
as the hill as being first up I had not noticed just what and angle
gate 9 was and managed to clip it so the two attempts I had at the
hill didn‟t really matter anyway!
After lunch it was back into the
trees. I spotted the gate for a shunt but still managed to clip the cane
and coming back was no better
either. This section was again very tight, winding in between trees. Not
tight like section 1 but just tight corners to get around. The site is
basically a wood, despite its name, and if you didn‟t get along on that
Sunday, just think of the Padley
Wood site and you won‟t be far wrong. So trees were the order of
the day and how to avoid them and get in between them at the best
angles. Some of the guys took long
detours here to approach gates, Alistair making such a long one that
he completely got lost!
The final two sections were much better. Still lots of trees but much
more manageable. Much more
manageable that is if you could remember the way as one tree
looks very similar to another! Through the trees, round a very
tight mound up and over with little
grunt at that point and then down a steep bank with a very tight gate at
the bottom and finally up another steep bank with a nasty turn at the
top. Typical Graham! I didn‟t do too
bad on this one in fact getting a clear on the way back.
Good day – yes it was, the sun
shone all day and the trees provided some welcome shade.
Had it been wet the site would
have been different again and very, very difficult and slippery.
RTV+
Bullring Farm RTV+ Report. I had booked the Bullring Farm off-
road site for the first time this year
after having competed there on a Challenge event last year. None of
the Viking trials guys had been there before, so it was great to be
able to explore a brand new site. I
was hoping that we would get loads of competitors to come along
to see what the new site was like, but sadly only 13 drivers came
along to give it a go. Last month‟s
event at Marefield had been the biggest turnout for RTV+ I‟ve ever
known, but it was back to earth with a bump for this one, as only
three of us were there. This was a
shame as it proved to be an excellent site.
Richard Cumberland had set this one up for us, and after the usual
formalities of signing on and scrutineering, Richie led us off into
the site. Bullring is usually a very
muddy site, but the dry weather in recent weeks meant that water
levels were very low and much of the mud was dry enough to be able
to drive over. Having said this, it
had rained a bit on Saturday, so things were a bit greasy when the
guys were setting up. It was a gloriously hot, sunny day on the
Sunday, so sections that were only just driveable on Saturday were
much easier to drive on the
Sunday.
All the sections were relatively straight forward and easy to follow,
with none of the complicated brain
teasers we‟d had at Marefield. Richie Frost started with a flourish
and cleared section one and only scored a 1 when this was reversed,
but Pip and Tom did not have the
benefit of a shunt and collected some high scores on these two
sections. Thankfully, things evened out for the rest of the days‟
sections with very little to choose between all of the scores. With just
three competitors, were rattled
through the sections in very quick succession and had completed six
sections by the lunch break. After lunch, things got a bit tougher
as Richie had used the steeper,
muddier parts of the venue. Things had gone pretty well up until now
with no one getting stuck with the resulting time consuming tow-outs.
However, one section had a very tight turn around a big tree with a
drop into deep mud off to one side,
Richie Frost was able to use his
shunt to good advantage to get
around, but neither Tom or Pip were able to make the turn and
both of them ended up at the bottom of an undriveable gully.
Fortunately, they are both equipped
with a winch, so they were able to self recover with little time wasted.
We had completed all 10 sections
by about 15.00, so we decided to
set up one more section to make the most of the day. Sadly, Tom
took the wrong route on this one and drove the wrong way through
the 9 gate and collected 9 points for his error. We were all a bit
weary by now, but seeing as it was
still relatively early, we reversed this section, with a couple of
tweaks to make the 12th section of the day. Richie Frost again did well
with the benefit of a shunt, but
sadly both Pip and Tom failed to get out of a muddy rut to get
through the 9 gate.
It had been a good day and it was great to have a go at a completely
new venue. Everyone, seemed to
have enjoyed themselves at Bullring and I would certainly like to
visit the place again next year.
Saturday morning I got up
early, quietly dressed,
made my lunch, and slipped
quietly into the garage.
I hooked up the boat up to
the van and proceeded to
back out into a torrential
downpour. The wind was
blowing 50mph, so I pulled
back into the garage,
turned on the radio, and
discovered that the
weather would be bad all
day. I went back into the
house, quietly undressed,
and slipped back
into bed. I cuddled up to
my wife's back; now with a
different anticipation,
and whispered, "The
weather out there is
terrible."
My loving wife of 5 years
replied, "And, can you
believe my stupid husband
is out fishing in that?"
And that's how the fight
started...

DEAF WIFE.....
A man feared his wife wasn't hearing
as well as she used to and he thought
she might need a hearing aid.
Not quite sure how to approach her,
he called the family doctor to discuss
the problem.
The Doctor told him there is a simple
informal test the husband could
perform to give the doctor a better
idea about her hearing loss.
Here's what you do," said the Doctor,
"stand about 40 feet away from her,
and in a normal conversational
speaking tone see if she hears you.
If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and
so on until you get a response."
That evening, the wife is in the
kitchen cooking dinner, and he was
in the den. He says to himself, "I'm
about 40 feet away, let's see what
happens."
Then in a normal tone he asks,
'Honey, what's for dinner?"
No response..
So the husband moves closer to the
kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife
and repeats, "Honey, what's for
dinner?"
Still no response.
Next he moves into the dining room
where he is about 20 feet from his
wife and asks, "Honey, what's for
dinner?"
Again no response.
So, he walks up to the kitchen door,
about 10 feet away.. "Honey, what's
for dinner?"
Again there is no response.
So he walks right up behind her...
"Honey, what's for dinner?"
"Ralph, for THE FIFTH time,
CHICKEN!"
