Topic 2013: Unused potentials of surveying - neglected and new spheres of acitvity
Technische Universität München

Opatija, October 25 – 27, Congress Centre Grand Hotel „4 opatijska cvijeta“
In many European countries professional surveyors have to compete
with other geodesists and increasingly with representatives from other
professions within the core market of surveying.
As a result price dumping is at the order of the day and it takes
ambitious effort to survive. This even applies to Western Europe
where the number of graduates in geodesy and geoinformation for
years falls short of the number of surveying experts needed to replace
retired ones and to occupy new vacant positions within the society.

Nevertheless, the competitive struggle within the established core
market urges us to look out for finding profitable business in niche and
upcoming future markets - off the beaten track.
In Croatia as a prosperous country just having joined the European
Union and having no lack of academic surveyors, a possible predatory
competition thus could be mitigated or prevented.

Energy Saving & Improving Mobility (1)
Modern engine control could enable considerable energy saving – in particular for
freight trains - if exact gradient data would be available; alas, this data does not exist
for most of the older railway tracks still in use! Kinematic GNSS surveys by receivers
mounted on engines prove necessary.

Energy Saving & Improving Mobility (2)
Non-availability of absolute railway track data is a common european problem. As rail
position and curvature data often only exists in local coordinate systems or is held
back by „track segment data emperors“, a homogeneous railway GIS is still missing.
Some EU attempts for unified data will come too late – so capable track acceleration
concepts have to refer to cartography or crowd sourcing to explore beneficial track
segments whose redesign would save precious minutes of travel time (Meng, 2011).

Energy Saving & Improving Mobility (3)
New layout concepts using barycentric transition curves (Wiener Bogen ®,
Hasslinger, 1996) can achieve considerable velocity increase on existing railway lines
by advanced track alignment using sophisticated tamper machines. Applied for urban
underground lines in Vienna, small alignments [cms] lead to significant accelerations.

Most of european road bridges become 30 to 50 years now and have been strained
more than designed for because of increasing loads and ever growing traffic. If the
Gigaliner gets operating permission, the situation will even tighten! As economic limits
will not allow for plenty of reconstructions, bridge monitoring will be the only escape!

„On site it will be only assembled what
is fitting together in the computer“
The surveyor‘s job will be to
extract point data out of the BIM
and to translate it for staking out
to put the model into reality! And
it will take a lot of new software,
data storage and accustoming!

Ten important hints

Opatija, October 25 – 27, Congress Centre Grand Hotel „4 opatijska cvijeta“
• Listen carefully to the worries of your clients and contractors!
• Read and watch international magazines (looking over the fence)
• Note all your ideas immediately and sort them every week
• Cling to an opportunity to try out the best one of them
• Meet the exact demands; develop and deliver tailored solutions
• Evaluate the outcoming critically and improve your approach
• In case of success go on with a similar or even a larger project
• Overcome apparent limits of your available equipment and staff
• Invest in latest instrument and computer technologies
– Build up joint pools to secure both financial resources and rate of use
• Establish new partnerships to create and share expert knowledge
– Link private enterprise with university institutes and administrative bodies
