Brrrr... Winter has officially begun and where else would you rather be than in a giant tin shed sitting really still for a couple of hours at a time.! I did just see for the first time a battery heated jacket. Perhaps I should begin a new member involvement section of the newsletter where members can send in tips for staying warm whilst scoring during winter.

As a committee we are constantly thinking of ways to bring our membersip together. With us all working at different associations and stadiums we don't have much opportunity to get to know each other. With that in mind we are hoping to make the newsletter a place to get to know each other and other associations. If you have an interesting story or basketball history please let us know. If your association does something that's making a difference or does things differently. Let us know and we can tell others about it. Whether it be the big professional leagues or the grass roots stuff, you just never know who will be interested in it.

Now onto the business part... The Classic is being run June 5-8. At this time we still need a couple of scorers at Dandenong and Sandringham on Sunday so please contact Karen at [email protected] if you are able to help.

FIBA Oceania Championship is being held on August 15th at Rod Laver Arena. The Opals take on the Tall Ferns and the Boomers challenge the Tall Blacks in the first run to to 2016 Olympics! Basketball Australia is appointing officials for the event and attched to the newsletter is a nomination form. Nominations are to be emailed back Mark Quinn, details on form.

The NWBL and WNWBL season has also started. Games are being run out of Kilsyth and they are looking for scorers. The competition is played in cluster rounds from Friday to Sunday. If you haven't had a chance to see a game of wheelchair basketball it really is worth it.

Recruiting more scorers!

In an effort to recruit more scorers into our ranks, a few of us have taken a long term approach..... introducing

and Doug Drew.

Any Ideas? We are constantly looking at ways we can boost our

numbers. We created a flyer that has been distributed to all convenors, and where possible put up in stadiums.

Do you have any ideas on how to promote VBSA? We are finding this season that there are more associations with a shortage of scorers and are struggling for numbers

each weekend.Do you have a solution? Let us know...

Q. With 5 seconds remaining on the shot clock during a throw in, Red 4

passes the ball towards the basket where it touches the ring. Is the shot

clock reset?

A. If the ball is controlled by Red team after it touches the ring, reset is to

14 seconds. If the defensive team gains control of the ball, then a 24

second reset.

Q. Red 5 shoots for a field goal. The ball touches the ring and on the re-

bound a held ball is called between Red 6 and Blue 7. The possession

arrow shows for team Red.

What is on the shot clock and where is the ball inbounded?

A. Throw-in for the Red Team at the place nearest to where the held ball

situation occurred. The shot clock will be reset to 14 seconds.

Q. The Officials discover Red 9 is the 6th player on the court after Red 9

commits an offensive foul or scores a basket. Do either of these count,

and is there a penalty for having 6 players on the court?

A. Assuming the Officials and the Table Officials are doing their job, then

one player must have entered or stayed on the playing court illegally.

The player is removed and a technical foul will be charged against the

Coach and recorded as a “B”.

Wheelchair RugbyFor 6 years we have been assisting the wheelchair Rugby Competition with Scoretable Officials. Would you be able to assist next season which starts in August?

They play at Box Hill Aqua Centre, Monday nights, 2 time slots... 7 & 8pm.

We have three officials per game. Timer/Visuals, Shot Clock and Scorer. Timing rules are much like domestic basketball. Visuals are the same and shot clock is 40 seconds, 12 seconds in the back court. The scoresheet is different, the scores have the time beside it. Not difficut.

Payment is made monthly.

If you think you could be interested come and have a look at us. Contact me on 0412 146 389 to get a date and time.

Thanks Avis.
