Hittite has launched a new programmable bandwidth LPF (Low Pass Filter) targeted at all applications that use quadrature modulators and/or demodulators. The HMC1044LP3E filters out LO harmonics and ensures little or no LO contribution to modulator sideband rejection or demodulator image rejection performance. Although targeted at LO filtering applications, the HMC1044LP3E can also be used to filter all RF harmonics such as those generated by amplifiers and mixers.

The HMC1044LP3E offers a choice of 16 programmable bands which are optimized for cellular applications ranging from 1 to 3 GHz. The HMC1044LP3E is a truly wideband part compatible with wideband PLLs with Integrated VCOs and wideband quadrature modulators and demodulators. The HMC1044LP3E enables wideband multi-standard, multi-carrier designs that can be dynamically configured for each application.

The amplifier provides 14 dB of gain, 36 dBm output IP3 and +28 dBm of output power at 1 dB gain compression while requiring 250 mA from a +10V supply. The HMC994LP5E exhibits a slightly positive gain slope from 5 to 25 GHz making it ideal for EW, ECM, radar and test equipment applications. The HMC897 is a MMIC band pass filter which features a user selectable passband frequency. The 3 dB filter bandwidth is approximately 18%, while the 20 dB filter bandwidth is approximately 35%. The center frequency can be varied between 9 and 19 GHz by applying an analog tune voltage between 0 and 14V. This tunable filter can be used as a much smaller alternative to physically large switched filter banks and cavity tuned filters. The HMC5850BG is a two stage GaAs MMIC pHEMT distributed amplifier, (Figure 1) that operates from -40 °C

to +85 °C, provides up to 32 dB of gain and exhibits very low additive rms jitter of 230 fs. The HMC5850BG has demonstrated successful interoperation at 32 Gbps with a MUX from a leading supplier (Figure 2).

Features of HMC5850BG include high gain across a wide frequency range, low power dissipation, very compact size, integrated peak detector function, fast rise/fall time, and integrated bias tee inductor. The driver provides 8 Vp-p saturated output swing up to 32 Gbps and features output swing and eye crossing adjustment. Control of the HMC5850BG output amplitude and eye crossing can be further simplified by using Hittite’s active bias controller products such as HMC981LP3E.

With a wide supply operating range of +5V to +7V, the HMC5850BG provides system designers with scalable power dissipation for varying output drive requirements. For example, the HMC5850BG consumes only 0.8W at 5 Vp-p output and 1.4W at 8 Vp-p output with a supply voltage of +6V. The integrated peak detector function enables system designers to automatically monitor and maintain a constant output swing from the modulator driver while, the integrated high speed bias tee eliminates the requirement for external components.

The HMC5850BG is housed in a 9.75 mm x 6 mm x 3.29 mm laminate substrate based BGA surface mount package and features RF I/Os that are internally matched to 50 Ohms. For more information, please contact [email protected]

Data Converters are critical elements in communication systems forming bridges between analog transmission media such as fiber optics, microwave, RF and digital processing blocks such as FPGAs and DSPs. tuning across the 57 to 64 GHz band in steps of 500 or 540 MHz (one quarter of the IEEE channel spacing) depending upon the reference input frequency. It features as much as 38 dB gain (with 17 dB gain-control range) to achieve up to +12 dBm linear output power and +17 dBm saturated output power. The differential RF output provides a low-loss RF transition with high output efficiency.

The HMC6001 receiver IC operates with single-ended input signals from a selected channel in the 60 GHz band and down converts them to differential analog I and Q baseband signals. The receiver chip includes all necessary frequency generation, gain control and filtering to support RF signal bandwidths up to 1.8 GHz. The receiver chip contains programmable baseband filters to set the highpass corner frequency for removal of residual DC offset and local oscillator (LO) feedthrough signals and to set the lowpass frequency for lower bandwidth signals. The HMC6001 exhibits a 6 dB noise figure at the maximum gain setting and provides a 65 dB gain control range in 1 dB steps.

Both the HMC6000 and HMC6001 feature integrated phase noise of -25 dBc at the 1.76 GHz WiGig symbol rates, enabling modulation formats up to 16-state quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM). Both the HMC6000 and HMC6001 exhibit phase noise of typically -86 dBc/Hz at offsets 1 MHz from the carrier. The table, right, summarizes the performance of the chipset. A simple four-wire digital serial interface provides full control and status reporting for these ICs, including frequency channel selection, gain control, circuit bias and filter bandwidths.

The HMC985LP4KE is an absorptive Voltage Variable Attenuator (VVA) which operates from 10 to 40 GHz and is ideal in designs where an analog DC control signal must be used to control RF signal levels over a 35 dB dynamic range. It features two shunt-type attenuators which are controlled by two analog voltages, Vctrl1 and Vctrl2. Optimum linearity performance of the attenuator is achieved by first varying Vctrl1 of the first attenuation stage from -3V to 0V with Vctrl2 fixed at -3V.
