Farewell to the Star Tree

Last weekend saw the final demise of Coffee Camp Public School’s beloved Star Tree. Some of you may remember this large

spreading tree which dominated the space between the Assembly Area and the Music Room. It was planted in the mid 1950’s

at the time the school was rebuilt on it’s current site following the total loss of the old school in the disastrous 1954 flood.

It grew quickly and became such a feature that it was adopted as the school emblem. Several generations of Nimbin Valley kids

were sheltered from the hot summer sun under its graceful branches and generous shade. And in Autumn, it gave a

magnificent display as it’s star-shaped leaves turned red and carpeted the ground; hence the name “Star Tree”. For those of

you with a botanical bent, it was an Oriental Plane Tree Platanus orientalis.

The Star Tree was still flourishing for the school centenary in 2010. Sadly, in the years that followed, it developed a fungal dis-

ease. Despite a couple of attempts to save it, it eventually gave up the ghost. All that was left was a forlorn stump which

eventually had to be removed as the extensive rotting root system was creating a hazard. The area has now been levelled and

grassed over, leaving no evidence of the magnificent tree that once stood there.

It’s YOUR P&C Association

The first P&C Meeting for 2019 is at 3.15pm on Monday 9 March in the school library. Will you be there? This is your

opportunity to be involved with the school which your child attends.

P & C Association Activities All parents and carers with children at Coffee Camp Public School are members of the P&C Association. It’s your P&C so please get involved and soon!

• Attend meetings

Meetings are held in a relaxed fashion in the school library. These are a chance to meet with other parents and discuss plans

for fundraising and social activities, and decide how to spend the money!

Friday and there are other jobs for those who can’t get to school on Fridays. Can you:

* Help on the roster for a full day * Help on the roster for a morning only

IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT TUCKSHOP in 2020

Government regulations require that all volunteers in

schools have a working with children clearance.

This includes all tuckshop helpers.

Tuckshop will commence ONLY after the roster is filled

with volunteers who are cleared for working in schools.

Please return your roster form promptly.

then email to [email protected] or

Working with Children Clearance - Options

There are 2 options for parents to get the Working with

Children clearance for parent/carer volunteers in schools.

need a WWC to volunteer at the school your child attends.

of Education requires that you complete a form and provide 100

points of ID.

We have been encouraging parents/carers to get their WWC

number as it is a simple process and once obtained can be used

for all volunteer roles in the community. The options:

Option A. Visit the WWC site:

Your Year 6 student has been given an Expression of Interest for high school form.

Whatever your choice of high school all families must return this form. Depending on your choice of high school, different sections will need to be completed.

Your designated local school is based on your home address and has been written in Section B.

Section A: ALL families need to complete section A.

Section B: Complete this section if you would like your child to attend their designated high school as shown in the box.

Section C: Complete this section if you would like your child to attend a public high school which is out of zone for your home address. You need to nominate your preferred school and reasons for choosing it. You must sign section C and so will the principal. If you have questions about Section C please contact the school.

Section D: There are no selective high schools in our region.

Section E: Complete this section if your child will not be attending a public high school.

If you have any questions, please contact the office.
