FIRST DOWN

QB1 -- Just eight months after having offseason knee surgery, senior quarterback Clayton Thorson lined up behind center and started his 40th-consecutive game for the Wildcats. Thorson, who split time with junior quarterback T.J. Green, finished 16-for-26 with 172 passing yards, leading the ’Cats to three scoring drives. Thorson is fifth among active FBS quarterbacks with 7,720 passing yards and is 12th among active players with 44 career touchdowns. He holds the program record for career wins (28) and is tied for the career lead in touchdowns.

GREEN HORN -- Junior walk-on quarterback T.J. Green saw the first extended time of his career and was instrumental in the Wildcats' victory at Purdue. Green completed 64 percent of his passes (7-for-11), finishing with career highs in attempts, completions and passing yards (63). He scored a 1-yard quarterback sneak in the second quarter for his first career touchdown.

WALK IN THE LARK -- Sophomore running back Jeremy Larkin became only the second Wildcat since at least 2000 to rush for 143-plus yards and two touchdowns in a season opener (Jason Wright; 196 yards, 4 touchdowns vs. Kansas, Aug. 30, 2003). Larkin's career-high 143 yards were the most by a NU running back in a season opener since Tyrell Sutton rushed for 144 versus Syracuse 10 years to the day.

CENTURY MARK -- Larkin eclipsed the century mark rushing for the second-straight game (112 yards versus Kentucky in the 2017 Music City Bowl) and second time in his career. He scored a pair of first half touchdowns, marking his first career multi-touchdown game.

FISHER IN RARE COMPANY -- The first sophomore captain in the Fitzgerald era, linebacker Paddy Fisher is one of just seven sophomore captains in FBS entering the regular season. Fisher is one of just four Power 5 sophomore captains, including Louisville quarterback Jawon Pass, Virginia Tech quarterback Joshua Jackson and Ohio State linebacker Tuf Borland.

AND FOR GOOD REASON -- Fisher was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Associate, earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors and was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year by the Big Ten Network after leading all FBS first-year players in tackles (113) and solo stops (65) last year. He was the only Power-5 player to post two games with at least 18 tackles.

NEWSOME ON THE BLOCK -- True first year Greg Newsome II made five solo tackles and had a pass breakup in his collegiate debut, recording the most solo tackles in a season opener by a NU true first-year defensive back since at least 2000. He is also the first true first-year DB since at least 2000 to have five solo tackles and a PBU in a season opener.

NATE HALL, Y'ALL -- Senior linebacker Nate Hall returned to the field following his offseason surgery to lead the Wildcats' defense with 10 tackles (1 TFL) and an interception. Hall recorded the fourth double-digit tackling performance of his career, finishing just one shy of his career 11 tackles at Maryland on Oct. 14, 2017.

SECOND DOWN

HARTAGE ISLAND -- Senior cornerback Montre Hartage showed why he is one of the best in the country at Purdue, finishing with six tackles (five solo), a pass breakup and his ninth career interception. Hartage has intercepted a pass in back-to-back games for the first time in his career (2017 Music City Bowl vs. Kentucky) and is now tied with Sherrick McManis (2006-09) and Willie Lindsey (1989-92) for eighth in program history. His nine career interceptions are the fifth most among active FBS players.

FOR THE FIRST TIME -- Northwestern had nine student-athletes make their Wildcat debut Thursday night, including six true first years, a pair of redshirt first years and one graduate transfer. In comparison, NU had 22 new players in last season's opener. Chicago's Big Ten Team returns 61-of-76 letterwinners (81 percent) from its 10-win team last season, entering 2018 as one of the top-25 most-experienced teams in the nation.

CAPTAIN AMERICA, TOMMY DOLES -- Senior guard Tommy Doles has started 27-consecutive games on the right side of the offensive line and has earned All-Big Ten honors in each of the last two seasons. Doles was named to the Outland Trophy watch list, given annually to the nation's top interior lineman. Doles was also named to the Wuerrfel Trophy watch list for his community service efforts.

EYES ON THE RECORD BOOK

CLAYTON THORSON WATCH

SOMETHING IN THE NUMBER -- Sophomore linebacker Blake Gallagher, who wears the same No. 51 worn famously by his head coach Pat Fitzgerald, made his second career start and finished with a career-high eight tackles versus Purdue. Gallagher was second among first-year players last season with 33 tackles.

THREE-HEADED MONSTER -- The starting linebacking corps of Hall, Gallagher and Fisher combined to make 26 tackles at Purdue. Fishers finished the game with eight tackles and a forced fumble, the fifth of his career. He has recorded eight-plus tackles in seven of his 14 career contests.

SPREAD THE WEALTH -- Quarterbacks Clayton Thorson and T.J. Green combined to go 23-for-37 for 235 yards at Purdue, completing passes to eight different receivers. Senior wide receiver Flynn Nagel and junior superback Cam Green led the team with five receptions each. Sophomore running back Jeremy Larkin made a career-high four receptions and sophomore wideout Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman made his first career start and hauled in a career-long 14-yard reception.

TWO FOR THOMPSON -- Senior defensive tackle Jordan Thompson found a home in the Purdue backfield, recording a career-high two tackles for loss and a sack in the victory. Thompson has 25 games as an anchor of the defensive line the last two-plus seasons. He entered his senior campaign with high expectations coming off a season in which he set career highs tackles (26), tackles for loss (4.5), sacks (2.5) and quarterback hurries (4).

RETURN OF SOME ’CATS -- The Northwestern coaching staff saw its first change in over seven years with the addition of three familiar names in the offseason. Former NU assistant Jeff Genyk returned to campus as the program's Special Teams Coordinator, while alumni Lou Ayeni (Running Backs) and Tim McGarigle (Linebackers) were named assistant coaches in January. Veteran coach Matt MacPherson was elevated to Associate Head Coach and will lead the defensive backs in 2018. Despite the changes, the Wildcats eight coaches who have at least 10 years experience at the institution, marking the second most in the country behind only Navy (9).

WILDCATS NAME 2018 TEAM CAPTAINS -- Senior quarterback Clayton Thorson, senior offensive lineman Tommy Doles, senior cornerback Montre Hartage and redshirt sophomore Paddy Fisher were voted team captains by their teammates during training camp. Thorson becomes the fifth two-time captain under head coach Pat Fitzgerald, while Fisher is the first sophomore to serve as a captain during the Fitzgerald era.

OPENING THE DOORS -- Northwestern opened the doors to the brand-new, 500,000-square-foot Walter Athletics Center on the shores of Lake Michigan this offseason. The state-of-the-art facility includes Ryan Fieldhouse and Wilson Field, a 97,000-square-foot indoor practice facility.

QUOTE WORTHY -- ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit had high praise for the Wildcats during Thursday's nationally-televised broadcast, saying "I still personally don't think that the Northwestern brand gets the national respect they deserve ... Northwestern is a great option for a lot of kids."

OFF THE EDGE -- Junior defensive end Joe Gaziano became just the fifth sophomore since 2005 to lead the Big Ten in sacks with a league-high nine last season. Gaziano was named to the Bronko Nagurski Award watch list, given annually to the nation's top defensive player. He already ranks ninth in program history with 13.5 career sacks, with 12 coming in Big Ten play.

CHARLIE AND THE FIELD GOAL FACTORY -- Sophomore kicker Charlie Kuhbander earned All-Big honors last season after rewriting the Northwestern record books. Kuhbander set NU first-year records for field goals made (13), points scored by a kicker (82) and longest field goal (43). His 43 extra points and 81.3 field goal percentage set the sixth-best marks in program history.

FORMER NO. 1 QUARTERBACK JOINS WILDCATS PROGRAM -- Sophomore quarterback Hunter Johnson, the No. 1-rated quarterback in the Class of 2016 by ESPN, joined the ’Cats as a transfer from Clemson University in June. Johnson, the younger brother of former Wildcat Cole Johnson, appeared in seven games for the Tigers last season. He completed 21-of-27 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns. The Brownsburg, Indiana, native will sit out the 2018 season due to NCAA transfer rules and will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2019.

AROUND THE LEAGUE There are 14 #ProCats on 11 NFL teams, including the New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts.

JACKSON MAKES NFL DEBUTAfter missing the first three games of the preseason, Justin Jackson made his NFL debut for the Los Angeles Chargers with seven carries for 18 yards and a long of 16.

PAIR OF ’CATS ON THE MOVEDefensive lineman Ifeadi Odenigbo and safety Ibraheim Campbell were claimed on waivers Sunday, just two days after NFL teams were required to make cuts to 53-man rosters. Odenigbo was picked up by the Cleveland Browns, while Campbell will stay in the state of Texas and line up for the Dallas Cowboys in week one.

SIEMIAN EMBRACING ROLEFifth-year NFL veteran Trevor Siemian is entrenched in the backup role for the Minnesota

Vikings behind Kirk Cousins. Siemian started 24 games for the Broncos over the last two seasons, passing for over 5,600 yards with 30 touchdowns.

WE'RE TALKIN' ABOUT PRACTICEDespite not making 53-man rosters, four Wildcats from last season's 10-win squad were signed to practice squads Sunday. Tyler Lancaster (Packers), Godwin Igwebuike (Buccaneers), Garrett Dickerson (Giants) and Kyle Queiro (Cowboys) will continue their NFL dreams with hopes of earning a spot on the active roster.

Already the second-longest tenured Big Ten head coach at the age of 43, Pat Fitzgerald's 12 seasons at the helm of Northwestern have been spent building upon the tradition he helped establish as a Hall-of-Fame linebacker for the Wildcats in the mid-1990's. Characterized by his motivational skills, enthusiasm and passion for all things Northwestern, Fitzgerald has shaped Chicago's Big Ten Team into one that consistently achieves excellence in all three phases of the student-athlete experience: academics, athletics and community outreach.

Fitzgerald has led the Wildcats to eight bowl appearances in his 12 seasons and has guided the ’Cats to three of their four bowl wins in program history. Most recently, Chicago's Big Ten Team defeated Kentucky in the 2017 Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl, 24-23, giving Northwestern back- to- back bowl wins for the first time in program history. Northwestern finished the season ranked No. 17 in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches Poll, as well as the College Football Playoff Poll.

The win over Kentucky capped off an eight-game winning streak for the Wildcats, who finished the 2017 season with 10 wins for the fifth time in program history and third time over the last six seasons. Northwestern has averaged nine victories over the last three seasons (27- 12), setting a program record for wins during a three -year span. The previous high was 26 wins from 1903- 05.

Away from the gridiron, Fitzgerald's players have achieved at the highest levels in the classroom, last fall placing a record 39 players on the Academic All-Big Ten team en route to posting a program-record 3.14 GPA for the 2015-16 academic year. In 2012, Northwestern collected top national honors in the AFCA Academic Achievement Award for the seventh time since 1998. Additionally, Fitzgerald's program ranked second among all FBS programs in the recently released multi-year Academic Progress Rating (APR), posting a score of 992 out of a possible 1,000 in the measure of player retention and eligibility.

NU also goes to great lengths to make a difference in the community. Fitzgerald, his family and his players partake in countless charitable events, impacting the NU and Evanston communities through their participation in Northwestern Dance Marathon, Special Olympics, Misericordia, the NU chapter of Uplifting Athletes, weekly school and children's hospital visits, and dozens of other organizations. Most recently, Fitzgerald was named the honorary coach of the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

As a player in 1995, Fitzgerald was the leader of a suffocating Wildcats defensive unit that led the nation in scoring defense and anchored NU's storybook run to the Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl. He capped the year by winning both the Nagurski and Bednarik Awards as the nation's top defensive player and also was the Big Ten, Chevrolet and Sports Illustrated-Defensive Player of the Year. Fitzgerald accomplished all of this despite suffering a broken leg in the penultimate regular-season game.

A graduate of Orland Park's (Ill.) Carl Sandburg High School and a 2003 inductee to the Northwestern Athletics Hall of Fame, Fitzgerald resides in Northfield with his wife, Stacy, and three sons, Jack, born in November 2004, Ryan, born in September 2006, and Brendan, born in February 2009.
