St. Michael the Archangel, Troy, New York Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 25-26, 2020 From Fr. Anthony Ligato

What is your Primary Value in Life?

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, What is your primary value in life? We have had the oppor-tunity to reflect on that question. Have you found yourself reflecting on the question or one that is similar? We hear of two more parables from Jesus this week which continue the theme of the Kingdom of God. Along with the parables of the treasure that is found and the merchant searching for the lost pearls as well as the large haul of fish presented in the Gospel of Matthew 13:44-52, these parables call us to a deeper faith in God. These three parables call us to make the kingdom of God our primary value in our lives. The king-dom of God must be chosen above all other things. We should value nothing more than the kingdom of God. Not riches, nor career or even home and family. How do we understand the kingdom of God as our primary value? Throughout this liturgical year we read the Gospel of Matthew at Sunday liturgies and we hear in the Gospel how Jesus comes to bring about the Kingdom of God through His life, death, and resurrection. The Kingdom of God is a theme that is woven through the entire Gospel. From Jesus’ birth to His ascension we hear how Jesus has brought about the Kingdom of God. In today’s Gospel (Matt. 13:44-52) we hear Jesus likens the Kingdom of Heaven to a treasure and like any treasure it is to be valued. So then, the treasure we have been given is the Kingdom and we are to value it above all else. However, we know that the promise of salvation that Jesus Christ brought into the world was not valued by people and it is still not valued today. What is of more value to us, a

treasure chest of money or the kingdom of God? Once the treasure is spent, we are left with nothing. The Kingdom of God which even if it is a treasure buried deep in our heart

and hidden from others is still valuable. For that which is of God never loses it worth. What if you found a pearl, what would you do with that pearl? On its own it is not impres-

sive; it has to be strung together with other pearls to make an impression. Each of us are pearls in the eyes of God, maybe irregular pearls but none the less pearls.

How do we value the Kingdom of God? Jesus gives us the answer to that question, by sharing the Kingdom of God with others. In Jesus’ final words in the Gospel of Matthew when He commissioned the Apostles before He ascended to Heaven, He said, “Go out and teach all nations, Baptizing

them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” We are to realize the Kingdom of God is already here. That is what Jesus means when He says at the end of today’s Gospel, “Every scribe who has been instructed in the Kingdom of Heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” We are called to share the treasure of our faith and realize the Kingdom of God in our lives as our primary value. The Kingdom exists in each of us and we can bring it from our storeroom of faith and bring it to others. That is how the Kingdom of God is like a large haul of fish. The storeroom of faith in the Kingdom which exists in each of us and is brought forth in the same way as it was brought forth by Peter and the other Apostles. They were called at the Sea of Gali-lee to be fishers of men, and sent forth to baptize all nations to bring a large haul of fish to the Lord. It is not, however, up to Peter or the oth-er Apostles or us to separate out the fish one from the other; that is up to Jesus. We simply are asked to cooperate with the call to evangelize and be willing to go on the fishing expedition as fishers of men. How do we make the kingdom of God our primary value in life? We need to identify the mission, and the mission is to help others find the buried treasure

within them self. And once found, to bring forth the treasure which is the Kingdom that lives within each of us. No matter how unworthy we may think we

are, we need to help each other see that even an ir-regular pearl is beautiful to God.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Anthony

Respect Life Ministry of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Troy

For CoNSERNS U and Circles of Mercy

Once again, as we have for many years, St. Michael’s will participate in the collection of new school supplies for CoNSERNS-U and Circles of Mercy. Both agencies are located in the City of Rensselaer, and both agencies do great work helping children and families in our community. Back to School drives allow needier students to get the school supplies they need at no cost to them. The cost of these supplies can be a heavy burden on low income families, but because of the generosity of our parishioners and those of other churches and organizations this drive has been successful at eas-ing this burden. And, whether or not children are learning in the classroom or online, the need these supplies…note the addition of tissue packets and hand sanitizer The most needed items include:

new back packs (no wheels) 3 ring binders (1 .5 in., 2 in. and 3in.) composition books 1, 3, or 5 subject note books pocket folders loose leaf paper (wide rule and college rule)

Other Items include: glue sticks colored pencils markers highlighters scissors flash drives index cards pencils and pens zipper pencil cases/boxes scientific calculators (TXI 34) Tissue packets hand sanitizer

All items should be NEW, and the donations can be place in the labeled bins in the Gathering Area up through the weekend of August 15/16. Cash donations are also welcomed and can be given to Deacon Bob or brought to the office. Thank you so much for your ongoing care and generosity.
