PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Members, Exhibitors and Friends

Welcome to the programme for the 105th Annual Show of the Cupar & District Floral & Horticultural Society.

As you know last year we made the unfortunate decision to reduce the duration of the show to one day due to the extreme high costs imposed on the Society, and given the feedback we received, we’ve decided to remain a one-day Show for the foreseeable future.

This year’s show will be held slightly earlier on Saturday 13th August 2016, starting with our coffee morning at 10am. The Bonsai Society will be hosting a number of demonstrations throughout the day in the Lower Hall, and they have opened up classes for those who wish to give it a try!

We hope that our seasoned exhibitors in the floral, fruit and vegetable category will once again put up a good show. Remember we also have classes for home baking, wine, floral art and photography, and a number of classes for the children too.

If you are new to the Show or new to growing, why not put in your exhibits into the NOVICE Section for those a little daunted by the open classes; enjoy it, join us but do submit your entries. Remember our friendly, local show is for amateurs, so please encourage neighbours, family and friends to have a go!

The Show and other events can be found on our website. Please visit it: www.cuparflowershow.co.uk

On behalf of the Cupar & District Horticultural Society, thanks go to all advertisers, traders and sponsors who have given generous donations supporting the show in times of economic downturn - these funds help to cover the cost of running the show and create the prize fund. To new supporters, we hope you will continue your support for years to come and find this Show an effective way to promote your business. And most importantly we would like to thank YOU for supporting one of Cupar’s longest running events. Les Wheelans President

SCHOOL’S COMPETITION

The Cupar Flower Show aims to encourage the younger generation to become more involved with

horticulture and the environment This year the competition ‘Growing for Fun’ is open to all nurseries,

pre-schools, play groups, primary and secondary schools and further education colleges in Fife, and

any youth educational eco-groups.

Growing for Fun can take the form of a flower garden, vegetable garden or a combination of both. It

will be judged on quality, tidiness and the thought process behind the garden. It will not necessarily be

judged on produce, given that some items may not be fit for the table or display until later in the year.

Staff and students from the Horticultural Department at the SRUC Elmwood Campus have offered their

services to any group participating in the initiative. Assistance offered could be in the form of general

gardening advice, gifting plants to stock the garden, students carrying out physical work to create the

outline garden for the school group, or by arranging visits to the Horticultural Department at Elmwood.

In return the students will be credited with assisting the local community in helping create a sustainable

environment.

A representative from the school/group will be required to explain to the judge, Bruce Robertson, the

idea behind the garden, what is being grown and why. Judging will take place on Thursday 23rd June.

Exhibitors Notes 1. One entry per class/year group involved in the garden project; you are not

restricted to only one per school. 2. Eco-groups are allowed to submit one entry. 3. Closing date for entries: Friday 10th June 2016. 4. Judging will take place on Thursday 23rd June 2016.
