CAVA Chicago Archdiocesan Vocation Association 2013-2014 Ministry Year Begins

In July Pope Francis described joy as “not the inebriation of a moment”, but “something else.” He reminds us “True joy doesn’t come from things, from having, no! It’s born from the encounter, from the relation with others.” Indeed then it is joy filling our hearts as we begin this new year of CAVA collaborative vocation awareness ministry. The relationships we are building with God, one another, and ourselves are at the heart of authentic discipleship. The encounters we have experienced already as our projects, planning and programming begin, with national organizations, the Chicago Archdiocesan Offices, 65+ religious congregations and groups of consecrated persons have rooted deep in our hearts.

We take this opportunity to join our voices of welcome to new personnel in both the Archdiocese

of Chicago Vocation and Young Adult Ministry offices. Fr. Francis Bitterman, the new Vocation Director for the Archdiocese of Chicago, and Mr. Darius Villalobos and Mr. Juan Pablo Padilla, new Director and Coordinator of Young Adult Ministry, respectively are each cultivating avenues of collaboration and creative exploration for new ways to work together inviting others to discern their life vocation

These offices are helping CAVA get the word out about two opportunities of encounter and building of relationships for young adult Catholic women 18-30+ curious about life as a religious sister. CAVA’s Chicago’s Got Sisters (Nun Runs) weekends are being held November 1-3, 2013 and April 11-12, 2014. We are grateful for your help too in getting the word out. Click here for copies of the flyer and brochure. Thank you for posting this information in your parish, on a college/university campus, any place young adult Catholic women 18-30+ may see it and respond. You may also want to “create an event” on your congregation’s Facebook page and like CAVA’s facebook page as a part of your strategy.

The critical importance of offering a credible witness in the church and particularly among our young Catholics as consecrated and ordained persons as we build the culture of vocations was emphasized again at the JS Paluch 26th Annual Vocation Seminar August 19-21 in Rosemont, IL. Fr. Sean McKnight, Executive Director USCCB Secretariat Of Clergy, Consecrated Life And Vocations, gave the presentation “Personal Relationships: a Key to Promoting a Culture of Vocations" sharing findings of the CARA study of the Profession Class of 2012 and the Ordination Class of 2013 pertinent to vocation ministry. You may find the findings of this study helpful for your own congregation’s building of the culture of vocations. Click here to access the USCCB vocations page listing Fr. McKnight’s presentation.

Finally, if your congregation is not yet a member of CAVA and you wish to join us in many encounters already underway in our CAVA ministry of nurturing the culture of vocations in our Church. Register today as a member at www.VocationsCAVA.org or contact Sr. Elyse at [email protected] or (312) 534-5240.

CHANGES IN PERSONNEL

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS

Farewell Sr. Margaret….

Sister Margaret Coleman OSF retired as Coordinator of the Retirement

Fund for Religious for the Archdiocese of Chicago in August 2013. During

her 20 year tenure as Coordinator, Sr. Margaret helped make the Archdiocese

a top contributor to the national Retirement Fund for Religious. We are all

grateful for her gifted presence in the Office for Religious and she will be

missed. Sr. Margaret will continue to live in the Chicago area and take time

to pursue her many other interests. She is currently taking time to travel and

enjoy family and friends.

Welcome Sr. Lisa…

This September, we welcomed Sister Lisa Polega SLW as our new Coordinator

for the Retirement Fund for Religious. In addition to her new responsibilities she

ministers for the Archdiocese as a Consultant with the Office for Immigrant

Affairs & Immigrant Education. Because of her experience as a newer religious,

Sr. Lisa has developed an appreciation for the wisdom of elder religious and an

awareness of the need for assistance for retired religious. She was raised in

Bellwood and currently lives in Chicago.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

“It is important for Catholics to know that the largest coalition of Islamic organizations in Metropoli-

tan Chicago has taken an official and public position in support of the Christians of Egypt. “ See this

link from the Catholic New World website:

http://catholicnewworld.com/cnwonline/2013/News/0826

“In this time of increased polarization, moderate voices are often left out of the public square. Mod-

eration rarely makes a good headline. Yet, experience teaches us that conflict is best resolved when

“cooler heads prevail.” It is my hope that you and your people might take some hope in the efforts by

our dialogue partners to speak words of moderation in the public square.”
