Message from Myrtle:

With over 11 years experience as a police

officer, I know what it takes to make our

District 4 neighborhoods safer for all

families. It takes more than criminal ar-

rests and more police officers on the

streets. It takes listening to community

needs and reaching out to residents with

programs and services that work.

I am helping communities by supporting

more Neighborhood Watch groups and strengthening vital part-

nerships with the San Diego Police, Commission on Gang Preven-

tion and Intervention, Metropolitan Transit Service, San Diego

Unified School District and many others to improve public safety.

Regular town hall meetings are being held with District 4 con-

stituents, business owners and community leaders to hear your

concerns and then taking them back to City Hall for action. As a

member of the City Council’s Public Safety & Neighborhood Ser-

vices Committee, I recently supported crime reporting and reduc-

tion tools such as the online NextDoor.com and will continue ad-

vocating for neighborhood policing and public safety programs

for our southeastern communities.

Recent Council Actions:

On Monday, July 8 the San Diego City Council

approved overnight parking restrictions targeting

recreational vehicles, trailers and campers on San

Diego’s streets. The proliferation of illegally parked

vehicles is a public safety and quality-of-life issue that

impacts our District 4 neighborhoods. The ordinance,

which will be implemented citywide later this year, bans

the street parking of oversized vehicles between 2 and 6

a.m. daily.

On Tuesday, July 9 the San Diego City Council

confirmed appointments to the Community Reinvest-

ment Review Advisory Committee, including District

4 resident Carlton Stephen Walters. He is president of

the nonprofit Southeastern Diamond Business Associa-

tion (BID) as well as president of PCS World Network

and a successful entrepreneur in a variety of small busi-

nesses throughout San Diego. Other advisory committee

members appointed are: Vicky Rodriguez, Stephen Rus-

sell and Gabriel Gomez del Rio.

Councilmember Cole is getting things done with the help of San

Diego City Streets Crew on Pothole Tuesday in District 4. More

than 30 potholes throughout southeastern neighborhoods were

patched and filled, including this one at 65th and Skyline Drive.

Next District 4 Pothole Day is coming up on Tuesday, July 23.

Getting Things Done in D4:

Councilmember Cole and her staff are putting residents first and getting things done in neighborhoods

throughout District 4, including these recent public safety and community improvements:

-Upcoming Cleanup Event is set for Saturday, July 13 in the Encanto neighborhood.

-Graffiti was removed from a fence at Euclid and Groveland Avenues in Valencia Park.

-Asphalt Overlay was laid in early July along Imperial Avenue between 61st and 63rd

Streets in the Encanto neighborhood.

-Pothole Patching will take place regularly in streets throughout District 4. City Streets

Crew will be working in our communities on Tuesday, July 23. Be sure to request pot-

hole repairs for your neighborhood.

Putting People to Work:

We’re committed to connecting people in our District 4 communities with job search and employment-

related assistance. A great local resource is the South Metro Career Center, 4389 Imperial Ave., that

will host the upcoming business services recruitment events: Wednesday, July 17 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. with Swift Transportation

Thursday, July 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with Military Sealift Command

Friday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to noon with Veterans’ Employer Panel

Tuesday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with Military Sealift Command

(Recent Council Actions cont.):

On Tuesday, July 9 the San Diego City Council approved a new bike-sharing program that will make at

least 1,800 bicycles available for self-service use citywide starting next year at no cost to tax payers. Councilmember Cole wants to bring more pedal power to southeastern San Diego, and is pushing to add bike

lanes and other programs like bike-sharing that will make District 4 streets and neighborhoods more bicycle-

friendly.

On Tuesday, July 9 the San Diego City Council voted unanimously to ban the retail sale of dogs, cats and

rabbits in pet stores and other commercial establishments in the city. San Diego is now the second largest

city (behind Los Angeles) with such a ban. Pet stores will need to keep certificates that identify the sources of

their for-sale animals. Private breeders and nonprofit organizations that adopt animals to the public will be un-

affected by the ban.

Putting People to Work:

The San Diego Workforce Partnership recently issued a Request for Proposal (RFP)

to interested applicants with experience in developing On-the-Job Training (OJT) agree-

ments where there is a career pathway with wage progression for in-demand industry

clusters. OJTs are designed to meet the needs of local employers and jobseekers, who

have the opportunity to earn wages during training while businesses are reimbursed up

to 50 percent of those dollars. For more information on this funding opportunity, call:

You May Want to Know: Non-profit summit

The City of San Diego is hosting a Non-Profit Summit to discuss ways to tap into national and in-

ternational investment funds on Thursday, July 11 from 10 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m. at the

NAAC office at 9850 Black Mountain Road. The grassroots meetings are open to the public and will

address the needs of local non-profits such as funding, capacity building, training, mentoring, best prac-

Come celebrate African American Heritage Night at Petco Park on Friday, July 12. The San Diego Padres will be wearing Retro Pacific Coast League Jerseys

are available for neighborhood, business, church and community groups.

Free fedora hats will be given to the first 25,000 attendees and stay after the

A free Health Care Enrollment & Resource Fair will be held Saturday, July 13 from 9 a.m. to 2

p.m. at the Jacobs Center, 404 Euclid Ave. San Diego residents can receive application assistance for

Medi-Cal, CalFresh and other low-income health programs as well as receive health and dental screen-

The Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association and the San Diego Raza Lawyers Association will be holding

the annual Neighborhood Law School Program to provide

free legal workshops taught by top local attorneys. These

free workshops (in English and Spanish) are held Monday

evenings throughout the summer from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the

Jacobs Center for Innovation, 404 Euclid Ave., and cover a

variety of legal topics of interest to employees, business own-

ers, landlords, renters and residents of San Diego. Next up on

Caltrans invites District 4 residents to attend a public workshop to provide input for potential

community enhancement projects related to the State Route 94 Express Lanes Project. The proposed project will connect the I-805 south express lanes with downtown San Diego

and will accommodate new Bus Rapid Transit and carpools/vanpools. The workshop will be

held Wednesday, July 17 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Jacobs Center, 404 Euclid Ave. For

Camp Charles looking for a few good men

The Charles L. Lewis III Foundation is sponsoring Camp Charles, a free one-day summer camp for

young men ages 7-15. The 8th annual event will be held on Saturday, July 20 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at

the George L. Stevens Senior Center, 570 S. 65th Street. This year’s theme “Looking Forward-My Mind,

My Future” will feature interactive career-based activities. Space is limited to the first 40 participants. For

Relay for Life of Southeastern San Diego will be held Saturday, July 20 at Morse High

Summer Fest 2013

Sensation Summer Fest 2013 is be hosted Saturday, July 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bayview Baptist

The Southeastern San Diego version of National Night Out Against Crime will be

6 to 8 p.m., a free community National Night Out Against Crime event will be hosted at

Jackie Robinson YMCA summer sports kick off in July. This summer the YMCA will be offering youth

basketball, soccer, pee wee sports for 3-5 years of age, as well as cheer and football clinics. We are starting

Report D4 Potholes

The City of San Diego’s Street Division repairs over 30,000 potholes each year using everything from

a hot patch truck to bagged asphalt. Street Division's goal is to fix all potholes reported as soon as possi-

ble. Priority is given to potholes that may affect drivers, the rest are on a first come, first served basis. Every

so often, and especially after a long rainy season, Street Division crews will work on a "Pothole Saturday."

It is difficult for City crews to find all the potholes, so they rely on the public to make note of them. To re-

port a pothole, please call: (619) 527-7500 or use the online Service Request system at: sandiego.gov/street-

div/services/roadways/holes. Discount Internet for Students

San Diego Futures Foundation, in sponsorship by Cox Communications, provides Internet discounts

to low-income San Diego students and their families. To qualify for the recently launched Connec-

t2Compete program, students must reside in a Cox service area and participate in the National School
