CULTURAL DIVERSITY
"God does not reveal himself in the abstract, but by using languages, imagery and expressions that are bound to different cultures. This relationship has proved fruitful, as the history of the Church abundantlytestifies. Today it is entering a new phase due to the spread of the Gospel and its taking root within differentcultures, as well as more recent developments in the culture of the West. It calls in the first place for arecognition of the importance of culture as such for the life of every man and woman. The phenomenon of culture is, in its various aspects, an essential datum of humanexperience." -- Pope Benedict XVI, Verbum Domini, 2010

Reflections on the Markoe Leadership Retreat by Ozy Aloziem 15
On Friday, September 16, 2011twenty freshman, accompanied
by the members of the Office of Multicultural Affairs staff, piledinto a Creighton Universityshuttle van to attend their firstgroup activity as new membersof the Markoe LeadershipProgram- the annual retreat. After receiving supplies for theday and nametags, they wereencouraged to introducethemselves and state one thing
they expected to take out of theday. One student, Emily Dowdlestated I hope to learneveryone s names and get toknow the people I will bespending the next four yearswith. Many other studentsoffered similar suggestions, butnone of them knew what was
really in store for them. Theyarrived at the site slightly chilly
but ready to go and were greeted by the cheerful campsite staff.
Soon they were participating in big group activities that centeredon themes of trust, team work andconcentration. Afterwards, theywere split into two smaller groupsand led to the ropes course. Fromrope swings, to walking on stilts,to rope climbing, the students andstaff (who knew Becky Nickersoncould climb a rope hammock 10feet in the air!), the studentstested their critical thinking skills, agility and ability to work together.
After the ropes course thestudents had the chance to washup and come together as a biggroup over a casual dinner.Following dinner was a large
bonfire where the students had thechance to make smores and bondover things like childhoodmemories.
Lauren Murphy-Moore fondlystated It was really cool beingable to talk with everyone over the campfire. I learned that wehave a lot of things in commondespite our various, different
backgrounds. After the campfire, the students received treats and
piled back onto the Creightonshuttle, this time much dirtier andmore tired than when they firstentered, but decidedly more
bonded and content.

partnership with the VictoryBoxing Club located in SouthOmaha. The Victory BoxingClub is a Christian-based
boxing organization foundedand directed by Rev. ServondoPerales. Many of the young

participate. Students from the
elementary level and up arewelcome to come to the club.
Rev. Pareles and others fromVictory Boxing reached out toCreighton University with aninvitation for us to visit and learnmore about their organization andto see how they can get Creightonstudents involved with their organization. Currently OMA sand Victory Boxing s goal is toeventually have some of our students go to the Club to mentor and tutor their athletes andstudents. These relationships will
