The Office of Research Programs is the organizational unit within the National
Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice which develops and administers
extramural research designed to improve the understanding and effectiveness of
our criminal justice system. The publications described in Part I of this document
are a sampling of the best research products ~'.) date resulting from grants made
by one of this office's six divisions: Police, Courts, Corrections, Community Crime
Prevention, Advanced Technology and Special Projects. The research projects
described in Part II of this document will familiarize you with our current research
projects which will result in final reports within the next year, many of which will
be published. We hope that you will find some of them of use to you in your work.

Lists of all available reports published under the NILECJ equipment development Contract No. J-LEAA-73-0025 with the Aerospace Corporation and also of those published under Contract No. LEAA-J-IAA-02l-3 with the Law Enforcement Standards Laboratory are available from the NCJRS. The LESL program helps criminal justice agencies make sound equipment selections and purchases by testing, establishing standards and disseminating guidelines and reports. The equipment development program helps to translate equipment needs into practical hardware systems through design and testing of new products.
