Summary of Proposed Action: The Department of Mechanical Engineering at College Park, propose a modification to the undergraduate curriculum. The proposal removes one, three-credit mechanical engineering technical elective and adds the requirement of one, three-credit required course in Machine Design (ENME 400).

Background: Machine design has traditional been a central component to the Mechanical Engineering discipline. Twenty years ago, when the department underwent a major curriculum revision to reduce the number of credit hours in the degree, this course was transitioned to an elective status, where i t has been continually offered to the present day.

Rationale: During our last ABET accreditation review in the Fall of 2011, a concern was raised with our Frostburg Collaborative Program degree in which the reviewer felt the students were not receiving sufficient instruction in the central area of mechanics. The program subsequently modified their curriculum to require ENME 400 as a part of this program, which was approved in 2013 (PCC LOG No. 12030). This prompted discussions within the main College Park program, and after subsequent input from our constitutions, the undergraduate committee decided that this course should also become required in place of an upper level technical elective. This modification would not change the overall credit total, time to degree, nor impose additional pre-requisites on students. Therefore, we are requesting the modification to the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering be effective starting Fall 2015. Note that a VP AC proposal is also being submitted concurrently to adjust senior level pre- and co-requisites to be consistent with this change.

Transition Plan: The Mechanical Engineering faculty unanimously approved this change to the undergraduate curriculum. While the department is requesting an implementation date of Fall 2015 for all newly matriculating students to the department (freshman, internal transfers and external transfers), student enrolled in the program prior to the effective date may choose to complete their program under the old requirements if they wish.

Resources: No additional resources are needed to offer the new curriculum. ENME 400 already exists as a technical elective, and so currently has a supported instructional infrastructure. The removal of a technical elective requirement wi l l free up resources needed to teach the larger class size as matriculating students reach their senior year.
