St. Michael the Archangel, Troy, New York

Third Sunday of Easter From Fr. Anthony Ligato The Road to Emmaus leads back to the Empty Tomb Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

W e hear so often that we died with Christ in the wa-ters of baptism and through those waters we have been raised up with Jesus. We know that in bap-

tism we are given a share in the promise of the resurrection, what we forget is it is not simply a future promise but also a lived-out reality. We live out that reality by living out our lives in faith, “If you invoke as Father him who judges im-partiality according to each one’s works, conduct yourselves with reverence dur-ing the time of your sojourning, realiz-ing that you were ransomed from your futile conduct.” (1Peter 1:17-21) Our being raised up should make itself real and visible in our lives and when life becomes difficult, we must persevere. We are certainly in difficult times and we need our faith to sustain us because there is nothing else in this world and in this life other than our faith in Jesus Christ where we can place our hope. St. Therese of Lisieux understood that her suffering in life would be meaningless unless she could unite her suffering to that of the cross of Our Savior Jesus Christ. St. Therese said, “Time is but a shadow, a dream; already God sees us in glory and takes joy in our eternal beatitude. How this thought helps my soul! I understand then why He lets us suffer.” Our own suffering can give glory to God in the same way that Jesus’ own suffering on the cross revealed God’s glory. We have been raised up with Jesus on the cross and we have been raised with Christ in His Resurrec-tion. From death comes life, this is the mystery of the cross. In our lives we are called to make real and visible the cross of Jesus Christ, yes even embrace the suffering that comes our way so that we then can have the hope of new life. Can we persevere in hope as we suffer today from the ravages of the pandemic? We have been all given the promise of a fu-ture hope fulfilled. St. Therese writes about this fulfilled hope, “Even now I know it yes, all my hopes will be ful-filled, yes the Lord will work wonders for me which will surpass infinitely my immeasurable desires.” Powerful words for us to hear from a Saint who herself suffered and placed her hope in the Lord’s promise to deliver us from sin and death. We hear today about the two Disciples on the road to Em-maus who were struggling with their faith and hope after

seeing Jesus suffer and die on the cross. They could not bring themselves to believe what they heard from the women who were at the tomb. They were suffering a crisis of faith, and because they were suf-fering a crisis of faith, they leave Jerusalem and they leave behind the hope and promise of the empty tomb. They could not sustain their faith and hope in an atmosphere of anxiety, fear, and confusion. Their crisis of faith caused them to flee. They did not see that they had a responsibility to change the atmos-phere of anxiety, fear, and confusion through their perseverance, rather than cutting and running. “That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus’ dis-ciples were going to a village seven miles from Jeru-salem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred.” (Luke 24:13-35) They could not understand how they could make

a difference, not until Jesus revealed himself to them. This revelation was given to them in three ways, by their welcoming the stranger that was in their presence, the stranger was the Risen Lord. The disciples recognize the Risen Lord in the word pro-claimed and in the breaking of the Bread. “Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory? Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to

him in all the Scriptures.” They came to understand in the words of scripture they could make a differ-ence, if only they had held onto those words Jesus interpreted for them. But it was in the breaking of the bread that their eyes were open. “And it hap-pened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it and gave it to them.” The Eucharist gives us strength to persevere when we want to cut and run. The two disciples come to recognize the Risen in the breaking of the bread, “With that their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way?” This recogni-tion requires the two disciples to live out the reality of the resurrection by returning to the empty Tomb, The road to Emmaus leads them back to the place of suffering and death because that is where new life is found. Yours in Christ, Fr. Anthony

LIFE LONG FAITH FORMATION Please contact Barbara Berger in the Faith For-mation Office with any questions about the infor-mation on this page. LIFELONG FAITH FORMATION CLASSES

THANK YOU to all our parents, partners in education! They do so much to assure that their children grow physically, spiritually, intellectual-ly, and now academically too! The values and morals they teach with a Christian focus are instrumental in understanding right and wrong, and building a better world. But it’s the modeling of their actions and be-haviors that leads to life long understanding of their faith, and growing to be people who care for others. Our Faith Formation motto for little children is simple- God is love and love is God. Whenever we act like Jesus, in caring for others, we show the people of the world where our hearts are, and what we believe. God is alive and among us in all we do!! This happens more in every day life than in a class-room. We are seeing kindness, sacrifice, care and love in abundance as we all take care of one another during this COVID-19 pandemic. Prayers of thanks are urged to be prayed by families as God guides us through this difficult time. As is helping our neighbors – wherever they are! This Sunday, April 26th was our last Religious Educa-tion class scheduled for this school year. We will send evaluation forms to families via email, and continue the regular calls to families to let them know we are thinking about them, and here for ANY needs and con-cerns they have. But this is not the end!!!! We urge families to contin-ue to pray together daily and to be a blessing to every-one they meet as they carry their Christianity into the world. Here’s a wonderful suggestions for all of us on how to Pray three times a day in 10 words: AM - I love you, Jesus (How can I live as Jesus

did) Noon –Thank you, God (So much to be thankful

for) PM – Come, Holy Spirit (This is where I need

help!)

All 2nd graders preparing for the Sacrament of First Eucharist should continue to work on their packets with their families!

Confirmandi and sponsor's will continue to receive research topics and questions for faith sharing. Text, email or call me with any questions.
