February/March 2019
Dear Elk Members,
Happy New Year!!
Wow. all I can say is “where
did the time go”. The last
12 months passed by so
quick. We had challenges,
successes, and of course we
had fun, and I have made a
lot more friends, and thank
you for that. We did a lot of
great things in 2018, we
voted to get improvements
for our lounge and dining
room, and our banquet hall
re-painted, and we now
have a new heat pump for
the banquet hall parking lot
side. Since the holidays are
over, it is time for us all to
get back to work for our
Hagerstown Elks, there’s
always a lot more to do.
The veterans, children’s
programs, the Drug
Awareness program and
Bingo, plus much more. As
always, we need more
volunteers. Try to find
something to do to make
programs successful. We have
a lot of charities to support,
events to throw, and
meetings to attend. I am
really excited for the next few
months. There’s a lot going
on for you to get involved in.
There are some very
important meetings coming
up in February. The 2nd
Tuesday will include the
regular meeting as well as
Officer Nominations, with the
4th Tuesday including Officer
Elections and Service Pins. If
you are ready to become
more involved with your
lodge, I strongly urge you to
inquire now and get with
Leading Knight Frank Bradley,
our next Exalted Ruler. Having
been an officer going on four
years now, I can tell you that
it is a very honorable position.
So please consider stepping
up and giving just a little bit of
time to help make the
decisions that keep
Hagerstown Elks running!
So far this Elk year we have
initiated almost 50 new
members! This is awesome
progress but we continuously
need more new members.
And we already have a
handful ready to come in
February. I’m sure we can hit
60 by the end of February,
but can we hit 70?? Let’s keep
up the good work and see
how many more friends we
can recruit into our family.
This is my last time I will be
writing to you. I am sad and
happy at the same time; It is
now time to pass the gavel. I
want to thank all of you; we
have been through some
changes that had to happen;
and we must keep reinventing
ourselves as Elks. It was an
honor to serve as your
Exalted Ruler for 2018-2019.

Announcing the Elks Lodge 378 Most Valuable
Student Scholarship Contest Winners
Each year we review applications from the area high school seniors for the ENF Most Valuable Student Scholarship. Of the ap-
plications we review, we select the top five students for monetary awards from our Hagerstown Lodge 378. We also know
these five students will have their applications move on the West District level of judging. From there, selected applicants
move to the state judging and then on to the national level. National winners can receive scholarships ranging from $1000.00
per year to $12, 500 per year.
The following students were awarded the following by our local lodge and will be moving
on to the next level for further judging.
1st Place $1000.00 Winner – Sarah DeMuth – Barbara Ingram School for the Arts
2nd Place $500.00 Winner - Drupad Patel – Williamsport High School
3rd Place $300.00 Winner - Brandon Dillard – North Hagerstown High School
4th Place $250.00 Winner - Vivian Akinyi - North Hagerstown High School
5th Place $150 Winner - Sydney Shumaker – South Hagerstown High School
Congratulations to these exceptional students and we wish them success in the coming years.
Completing the review of the applications and grading the reports would not be possible without the help of Glenn Reynolds.
Thank you Glenn!

Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks United State of America 156th Grand Lodge Convention
Baltimore 2020 Host Committee Warren H. Johnson, PSP-Chairman
December 31, 2018
TO: Association Members: RE: Volunteer Vest and Host Badge For those of you who have attended a past National Convention, you are familiar with the members of the Host Com-
mittee being visible in colored vests and wearing a Host badge as they assist visiting members in and around the convention cen-ter.
The Host Committee is seeking creative members to step forward and submit designs for the 2020
vest and host badge.
I have attached photos of the 2001 vest and host badge that we used in Philadelphia. As with the
suggestions for the “pin”, your design should incorporate “Grand Lodge Convention”, “Elks”, Baltimore”,
“2020”, as well as a Baltimore related theme, like the Liberty Bell, that was used in 2001.
You may also suggest a color for the vest that will compliment your design and a color for the host
badge.
Designs should be emailed to each of the following members of the committee:
Jim Harbour Mary O’Brien Frank Clopper [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]
Please use Baltimore 2020 Pin in the Subject Line. Designs should be submitted by April 1st, 2019.
Thank you for your participation.
