Records Fall as T-Bones Pound Pheasants, 16-3

06/21/2011

The Kansas City T-Bones (15-22) pounded out a team record nine doubles and 12 extra-base hits on Tuesday night as they defeated the Sioux Falls Pheasants (15-23), 16-3, in Sioux Falls, S.D. Kansas City finished the game with a season-high 21 hits. The T-Bones jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Kyle Ruwe (1-2) in the second inning, scoring their first run of the game on a home run by Kala Ka’aihue. Then, with two outs, Kansas City hit four straight doubles before an RBI single by Jimmy Mojica capped the scoring in the inning.

Kansas City plated three more runs in the fourth inning, two coming on a double by Ray Sadler (pictured). Ruwe left with one out in the frame and was charged with eight runs on 10 hits in the loss.

The offensive explosion was plenty for starter Reid Santos (4-2) as the left-hander held Sioux Falls scoreless until he surrendered an RBI double to Gus Milner in the fifth. Milner would later score on a single to wrap up the scoring against Santos, who allowed just two runs on 10 hits over seven innings in the victory.

Martin Dewald allowed one run in the eighth inning and Joseph Kassanavoid added a scoreless ninth to finish the game for the T-Bones.

Ka’aihue connected for his second home run of the game in the seventh to make the score 9-2. He finished three-for-five with two RBI. Kansas City finished the game with a seven-run ninth, ending the scoring with a grand slam by Sadler that made the final 16-3.

Sadler went two-for-six with six RBI in the game, pushing his league-leading RBI total to 50 through just 37 games. Aharon Eggleston hit three doubles in the contest, falling one shy of the team record.

Christian Binford joins the T-Bones after spending the last season with the Detroit Tigers AA club, the Erie Seawolves in the Eastern League and the High A aff iliate of the

Baltimore Orioles in the Carolina League. He would go 1-4 at single A Bowie with a 4.95 ERA in 12 games, working 56.1 innings with 35 strike outs. With Erie the righty would

see action in seven games, tossing 21 innings with a 3.86 ERA with 22 strike outs.

Binford was originally selected by Kansas City in the 30th round of the 2011 draft and would make a steady climb in the Royals’ system. He spent 2017 in the Royals

organization with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha and would go 1-0 with a 1.99 ERA and 23 strikeouts in five games with Northwest Arkansas. Binford

would post a 7.24 ERA at AAA Omaha in 22 games.

Binford began 2016 at AA Northwest Arkansas where he went 3-2 in six games with a 4.84 ERA and 29 strikeouts. He was promoted to AAA Omaha on May 16th where he

would go 3-12 in 19 games, making 18 starts with a 5.28 ERA. He would split the 2105 seasons with Omaha and Northwest Arkansas, opening the year at AAA Omaha

where he went 1-4 with a 5.86 ERA in six games. He finished the year in the Texas League at AA Northwest Arkansas where he appeared in 16 games with a 4-7 record with

a 5.03 ERA and 60 strike outs in 91.1 innings.

Binford began the 2014 season rated as the Royals' No. 10 prospect according to Baseball America, and he was also selected as the prospect with the "Best Control". He

earned a spot on the Carolina League All-Star team and was part of the Futures All-Star Game at Target Field. He pitched a scoreless inning for the U.S. Team in the game.

Binford began the year with Class-A Wilmington in the Carolina League, going 5-4 in 14 games with a 2.40 ERA and 92 strikeouts. He would make the jump to AA, working in

eight games with Northwest Arkansas, striking out 36 and walking six in 48.0 innings. Binford would get a late season call up to AAA where he had a 5.40 ERA in four relief

outings and where he earned a starting nod in the Triple-A National Championship Game vs. Pawtucket, but he didn't factor into the decision after allowing one run over 3.0

innings in Omaha's 4-2 win. In 2013 he spent the year with Class-A Lexington where he had a 2.67 ERA in 23 games (23 starts) while striking out 130 and walking 25 and

where he was named a South Atlantic League Midseason All-Star. In his rookie season, he would pitch in eight games for the Burlington Royals in the Appalachian League.

Binford was born in Florida but was raised in Hagerstown, Maryland. He attended Mercersburg Academy High School (PA), where he posted a 0.64 ERA in 55.0 IP his senior

year. Binford overcame Tommy John surgery his sophomore year at Mercersburg Academy to get recruited by the University of Virginia and to get drafted by the Kansas City

Royals in the 30th round.
