Foster's Lager-A of Australiafor almost a century.

Since the Fosters brothers brewed thefirst distinctive Australian lager in 1888the fame of Australia's favourite beerhas grown around Australia and aroundthe world .

Foster's was first exported to SouthAfrica during the Boer war. Today youcan get a Foster's from Baghdad toBangkok, San Francisco to Singapore .

It's by far the biggest sellingAustralian beer in Britain.

One of the top 10 selling imports inthe U .S .A.

Sold in every Australian state,Foster's outsells every other Australianbrand of beer .

Au ralia's favourite beer.

Ormond convincingly accounted for Collegiansby 43 points in the A Section second semi-finallast week .

The light breeze favoured the northern endfor a change and Collegians started on fire with4 goals in the first 10 minutes, and despite theearly injry to backman Greg Parsons the Lionsdefence was able to hold out Ormond in thatfirst quarter - Ormond kicked just 7 points andtrailed by 22 points at the first break .

But in the second term Ormond took over, kicking 8 goals 2 for the quarter to Collegianssolitary point to convert their deficit into a 27point lead at half time . Forward pocket PhilMehrten who had missed recent weeks with aeye injury, was in brilliant touch and kicked 3goals in this quarter and finished with 6 goalsfor the day .

The Ormond defence led by half backs ChrisMcAsey and Russel Barnes and backed up by achubby but highly effective Steve McCooke inthe back pocket blanketed the Collegiansforwards and set up many opportunities withgreat rebound football . Paul Sutherland on thewing had a sensational quarter and had thebetter of Collegians Jeremy Schmidt on theday .

Collegians tried hard to get back into thegame in the second half but their confidencehad been shattered by Ormond's second termb u rst .

Simon Williams, moved out to centre half backbattled hard to lift the side and Ian Hermanprovided some inspiration with 4 goals . YoungChris Polloch in the ruck was another to performcreditably .

Collegians lack of depth showed and theywill be looking to include Hoyle and Eason thisweek . I think we've seen the worst of Collegiansand possibly the best of Ormond in what greatsurprises to see Mehrten and McCooke notonly play but perform such vital roles !

This week Collegians must forget theirnightmare and face proven finals specialists DeLa Salle for the right to meet flag favouritesOrmond next Sunday. De La Salle will be thepopular pick even though they lost bothencounters during the year . Mind you, De Lawere without state representatives in the lastclash . I think it will be close and it is more onfaith than logic that I go for COLLEGIANS v DeLa Salle .

With the completion of the Electronic Scoreboard atElsternwick Park the V.A.F .A. Marketing Committeehas put together an attractive package for the A and BSection G rand Finals .

Interested Companies and Individuals should contactthe General Manager, Peter French, on 531 5452 forrates and further information .

Ormond steamrollered its way into sucessive A Section Grand Finals with an easy win overCollegians whose performance disappointed the whole club and most of the non aligned spectators .Apart from a stylish first term after which the Lions "went missing" Ormond was never headed andboasted many good players, though there were none better then wingman Paul Sutherland whothrashed Victorian representative Jeremy Schmidt and club captain Russel Barnes whose strongmarking and clearing dashes frustrated most of Collegians haphazard forward thrusts .

For Ormond it was fitting reward for the hardwork put in by all sections of the club duringthe season and topped off a great day for the"Brown & Blue" as the Club's reserves staged agreat fight back to beat Ivanhoe by a point in avery high standard game . They've got their feetwell and truly on the ground down at Ormondand they all know that next week is the realPRIZE !

In B Section Marcellin fell in a heap and hadno answer to Caulfield's skill and strength . Itwas a classic case of Boys sent on a mens joband Caulfield Gram . are to be congratulated ontheir return to A Section after 6 years in B & CSections .

Marcellin like Collegians faces the big testtoday although more of that latter.

In C Section Banyule put up a great fight butsuccumbed to Therry, as I predicted and as theastute Manson Russel has noted means anotherguernsey clash next year either in A or B Sectiondepending on Parkside's performance thisafternoon . Well done to Bernie Dunne and histeam .

in D Section Melb. High had to fight off acourageous West Brunswick to earn promotionand another crack at Old Trinity whilst in ESection Heatherton was untroubled againstElsternwick who picked the wrong day to put inan ordinary one .

In F Section Brunswick held out Dovetonwho will be most disappointed yet nonethelesswill have learnt a lot from its two finals matcheswhich will no doubt hold the club in good steadfor next year, especially as their will be a numberof new teams in the Section in 1986 .

I must also congratulate Bulleen-Templestoweand Melb . High School for the entertainmentthey provided in the second Alex Johnson U .19championship match. In a high scoring andthrilling match from go to wo these lads turnedon a really great game which saw victory goingto MHSOB who continued running in the vitallast term . They were certainly a delighted groupof players, officials supporters and Dads thatgathered to witness the presentation of thePolwarth Cup and championship medallions .These lads are the future of the VAFA and quitea few on both sides have very bright prospectsin the game. The winning side lined up asfollows :

B : D . Langley, R . Terrens, D . JoyceH .B . : P . O'Connor, D . Lord, C . AnastasakisC . : S . Moody, C . Waldron, C . Wilso nH .F . : D . Lott, G . Stambolis, A . DrummondF . : L . Persicetti, G . Moritz, M . SlykhuisR . : R . Chapman, T . Scrinis, A . PhillipsI .C . : S . Reid, B . Georgilopoulos, D . DiBattista,M. Wilkes .Coach : Ray MacGillManager : Darryl PriceCaptain : Damien Joyce

And now to the Grand Finals . Its the one dayin September from C to F Section and as aresult of a direction from my Boss the 'G .M .',I've got to give the Reserves a bit of a go thisweek . Alas I don't see many Reserves gamesbut looking at F Section I recktln Uni . High canwin back to backs and in E Section I'm goingfor Williamstown who should benefit from havingsome senior players available . I'm confidentOld Trinity rezzies will get the first leg of the DSection double but have no idea in C Section .After tossing a coin its Therry! In B SectionBlacks and Old Paradians have forced a replayand there's no way known I'm going for Blackswho surrendered a 6 goal lead in the last 10minutes . Go to it O .P .'s .

The A Section reserves preliminary featuresIvanhoe and De la Salle . Ivanhoe was desparatelyunlucky to go down last week and I believethey'll bounce back to beat De La and gainanother shot at Ormond .

Clayton will go into the F Section Grand Finalas favourites which is not always the best .Brunswick has made it, through from fourthplace which is a fine performance and as theydo not rely on one or two 'stars' are bound togive Clayton a real run for its money . In factboth sides are evenly matched and in selectingthe 'Dragons' (Clayton) I do so bearing in mindthe heartbreaks of recent seasons .

E Section will possibly produce the closestgame as Heatherton and Preston are quite wellmatched . E Section leading goalkicker SteveReigar had a quiet day last week and stillHeatherton won easily. Should he fire todayPreston could be in trouble and much will dependon the performances from the 'old heads' likeShane Ryles for example . Its easy to panic infinals if you get behind and the frees start goingagainst you, but finals especially Grand Finals, are a real test of character and persistence and

as both sides possess tnese qualities a closegame is assured . The Old Xavs oval will suitPreston's running game and I feel they will windue to their consistency but I repeat its boundto be oh so close! (P .S . Please don't draw! )

D Section sees Old Trinity closing that elusivetitle of 'Premiers and Champions' on the season'sefforts they should attain it and top off a greatyear for the Green and Gold . The side hasmany fine players including of course skipperScott Cawley who won the D Section Best &Fairest award . Melbourne High knows itsopponent well . They were both D Section finalistslast year and have met 3 times this season . Nomatter how Alan Gluaiie alters his side or chargesup his side it still points to an Old TrinityPremiership, although Andrew Disney had betterwatch out if MHS sneak a couple of its U .19sinto the side because let me tell you these kidscan really play!

Like Old Trinity in D Section Fawkner willalso be chasing the 'Premiers & Champions'title when it meets Therry at Elsternwick Park .The navy blues have carried all before them allseason and have played far more disciplinedfootball in 1985 than we've seen from previousFawkner sides . The club is confident of successand having beaten Therry on 4 occasions duringthe season is entitled to be so . I suppose thebig hope for Therry is a windy day win the tosspile up a big score and bottle Fawkner up . I'llbet Bernie Dunn has thought of that too, forbeing a former De La man that club has employedthose tactics most successfully in the past . Stillthere are too many ifs and buts for me andcommon sense says its Fawkner .

The B Section Preliminary will be, as all BSection Prelims are, a hard slogging affairbecause the winner's prize is so great . Marcellin'spoor showing last week suggests they can onlyimprove. They let themselves and their clubdown badly and have suffered cruel injuries toWalshe and Cullinan . Where do you find a fullback and centre half back at this stage of theseason? Again Marcellin faces the problem ofto few (have they got any?) "old heads" whereasParkside certainly do not lack in this area . Thebig plus for the 'Red Devils' is the incentive of afirst ever appearance in the 'Big Time' - ASection, although Marcellin will also be keen toleave B Section .

Comparing the sides Parkside will hold swayin the ruck where Yoksich and Franklin will betoo big for Marcellins Matt Getson . Marcellinfailed badly up forward last week and onceagain faces a tough defence . Parkside areunderated in this area and with Sansonetti isbrilliant form supported by Coleman & Shaw itshard to see Marcellin kicking a winning score .Three players Marcellin must hold are Freeman,Williams and King . This trio are very dangerousaround goals and have the ability to really liftParkside when all is not going well .

I must go for Parkside - their experienceand determination to each A Section will be toomuch for Marcellin who are reportedly still shellshocked after last weeks big loss .

In A Section Collegians face the moment oftruth . All the talk of a more determined anddisciplined side went right out the window lastSaturday as Ormond applied the pressure . Welltoday they meet the only other side in A Sectionwho run at the ball as hard as Ormond - De LaSalle . De La is renowned for its fighting spiritand really hit finals form at the right time . AskOld Scotch and North OB . Besides De Lamatches Collegians in all departments . Up forwardKerin & Murphy will worry two of Collegiansbetter players Williams and Hinchen althoughthe clash between Shane Murphy De La andStua rt Hinchen Collegians will be a real highlight .Michael Greene poses a big problem forCollegians. Last week they were forced to useGeoff English in the ruck and sadly missed hisstrength and marking power up forward . Theywill need big efforts today from Chris Pollock &Tim Bennett. In addition apartfrom Ian Hermanlast week the Collegians small brigade wereunsighted and certainly Irvine who has had agreat year will be happy with the chance toshow his true form . Keith Parsons, Lawssen_Tregear, Wolff, & Daff -must aldo more and theinclusion of Eason (if he's fit!) will lift the runningscene . For De La Greg McHenry, Peter Leonardand Wal Hollier are key players in their abilityto not run but race the ball out of defence andwith Brian Bourke who from all accounts playedhis best game for the season in the semi, supported by Deveson & Hanrahan the De Ladefense appears inpenatrable . We shall see .Across the centre Gasparini will pick up Schmidtwho had a poor game last week and was shifted .Herman will be dangerous but De La skipperPaddy Maher in his own way will prove just aseffective . The shift of Harrington from wing toforward line has worked as the De La leftfooterhas been among the goals . He will need to bewatched closely. Tony Vitacca surprised me withhis game in the 1st semi . He was an aggressiveand clever forward whose only blemish was togive away too many-free kicks . Like Harrington,he will need to be watched . The more onelooks at the game the more I'm convinced DeLa will win and will well for that matter . With theexperience in the side I do not expectcomplacency from De La rather respect for itsopponent as the old agage that all games aredifferent is sure to be well known out at EastMalvern .

What The Coaches Sayas told to Peter French)

C SECTIO N

KEVIN MORRISON ( FAWKNER) : "if we play to our potential and the players produce the disciplinedfootball that's required we should go into B Section as Premiers. I'm a low key coach and have greatrespect for Therry and wish them all the best . "

BERNIE DUNN (THERRY) : "We'll win because one of the great things about the game is that we'vereally nothing to lose and can go into the game and give it our best shot . All the pressure is onFawkner as they're undefeated and this gives us the chance to try things we might not have if wewere in their position . Its the 5th time this season we'll have met and on the law of averages, we'rebound to win one out of five . Our boys are pretty keen as you'd expect . "

D SECTION

ANDREW DISNEY (OLD TRINITY): "We'll win because of our record and what we've achieved thisseason . The youth in the side a large percentage of whom have never played in a Premiership teambefore, are all very determined for success .

ALAN QUAIFE ( M .H .S .O .B .) : "We'll win because after 3 losses during the season we'll be moredetermined and the players are dedicated to arresting that situation . Basically Trinity are a verydisciplined side but man to man I have great faith in our players who I believe are just as skilful, butbeing younger are less experienced and have learnt team discipline week by week and are all set forvictory today ."

E SECTIO NBERNIE GEARY ( PRESTON M .B .O .B.) : "We shall win because last year going up a grade was fine, but we did'nt win the flag . There is quite an incentive there to win E Section as we're all well aware ofthe disappointment of last year . We're a club with our sights set on improving our position in theV .A .F .A . and this year is a very big year and forms part of that plan . "

BRIAN BOND ( HEATHERTON) : "The scores have shown that there's not much difference betweenthe sides and I feel we're a better balanced team and that the players have got to something thatthey're good enough. I just firmly believe we can win it and by the way please thank whoever wasresponsible for holding the E Section Preliminary Final at Monash - the ground was absolutelysuperb ."

F SECTION

ROB WOFF (CLAYTON) : "We'll win because we've been waiting 18 years . this is our first go at anamateur flag and all the players have worked hard and come through from the Under 19s of a fewyears back . We're playing well at the right end of the season and we'll be too desparate . We want it sobadly . "

DANNY DEMIR ( BRUNSWICK) : "I think we'll win because we'll be too desparate . I think we want towin more than them, plus they'll be-wearing Melbourne jumpers and they never win anything . "

What The Coaches Saidas told to Peter French after the Game

A SECTION SECOND SEMI-FINA L

MIKE McARTHUR-ALLEN (ORMOND) : "We were more desparate and after a bad 1st quarter inwhich we made many bad mistakes we put in a very good second term which put us back in the game .Our 3rd quarter was also very good . It doesn't worry us who we have to play in the Grand Final and Ithought Paul Sutherland's game on the wing was a superb effort and other very good players weremcCooke, Barnes and Phil Mehrten . "

BRUCE FERGUSON (COLLEGIANS): After quarter time our forwards refused to play in front and Idon't think we approached the ball with enough fortitude . Players who made mistakes didn't learnand continued to make them all day . We'll beat De La in the Preliminary. We're determined to bounceback . My better players were Williams, Herman, Pollock and Laussen . "

B SECTION 2nd SEMI FINA L

PETER CHISNALL (CAULFIELD GRAM .) : "Our preparation was great and we probably had 20players giving all day . Our experienced players came through and they gave us that bit extra . It was aterrific game and I'm very pleased to have-won . "

NEIL LE-LIEVRE (MARCELLIN) : "They were too tall, too god, too tough and too disciplined . "

AND THE CAPTAIN S

A SECTION 2nd SEMI FINA L

RUSSELL BARNES (ORMOND) : "We outpressured them all over the ground . Our constant pressureeffected their disposal and we gradually took away their confidence . We played the game to win andget into that Grand Final and I haven't given any thought as to who we'll end up playing . "

STUART HINCHEN (COLLEGIANS) : "Ormond knocked us off our game in the second quarter . In thefirst term we did the right things but the 3rd quarter cost us dearly as we weren't within strikingdistance at three-quarter time . We fought the game out well but had too many down on the day . Ourmore experienced players will have to work hard during the week to help those less experienced andyounger to "come up" for next Sunday . "

B SECTION 2nd SEMI FINA L

CHRIS STONE ( CAULFIELD GRAM .) : "We were more desparate and first in for the ball . We teamedbetter and didn't argue with the umpires or each other and basicly that's what its all about . Also wehad more to gain as very few of our team have played in 'A' grade whereas Marcellin was there lastyear . "

ANDY CULLINAN ( MARCELLIN) : "We weren't prepared to take risks and couldn't get out runninggame going . We fumbled badly and I don't think it was so much a lack of experience but that a few ofthe younger blokes may have thought it would just all happen ."

It's probably because Murph' sa lot more comfortable playing in his newWoolblend jumper.

In fact, since the whole VAFA StateRepresentative team have been playing inWoolblend jumpers they've all been a lothappier.

Woolblend jumpers breathe, so nomatter what the weather, there's no overheat-ing, itching or scratching .

And while others lose their form afterjust one season, Woolblend jumpers keeptheir shape for years . They're also machine

WELL DONE GREENIECongratulations from everyone at De La Sall e

OC . to Michael Greene who finished equal firstin the VAFA A Section Best & Fairest Award . Itwas a fine effort after missing half of the seasonafter recovering from a knee injury . It was alsono coincidence that the team's good form andlate run at the finals was when the big fellacame back into the side, and lifted them withinspirational and lion hearted efforts .

WELL DONE BOYSEveryone at De La Salle Old Collegians

wishes to congratulate our champion under 19team who went through the season undefeated, but were unable to clinch the big one, whenthey were runners up in the junior 2 GrandFinal . The boys were a credit to their coachMark Parker in the manner they conductedthemselves both on and off the field, while itwas disappointing not to win the flag after suchan outstanding season, the experience gainedshould stand them in good stead for the future .Coach Mark Parker and runner Tim Mullalywere the main stays behind the organisation ofthe team, the efforts put in by these two aremost appreciated by everyone at the club .Special mentioned also to captain PeterWaldron, Chris Campbell and Colin Lowe forkicking over 80 and 60 goals respectively . Toall other team members thanks for your wonderfulefforts, which have no doubt laid the foundationsfor many future young players to pull on thehonoured blue and gold jumper.

MILESTONE AT COLLEGIANSContinuing with the rush of milestones overpast weeks, Collegians ruckman cum virtuallyany other position, Nick Pike has also reached50 games. Recruited from Wesley College in1983 Pikey's short career has not been withoutntoe . Arguably his greatest feat hs been to bethe first player in almost over 40 years to playin all four grades, seniors, reserves, club 18and u .19s . His burning ambition it is rumouredis that he would also like a GB in all 4 grades . Atpresent only the seniors remain as a stumblingblock . In the last 2 seasons Pikey has consolidateda position in the seconds with his own brand offearless football . Having the ability to play indefence, attack or on the ball he has been acoaches' dream continually throwing himself into win the hard ball . Congratulations Pikey on afine 50 games and we all look forward to moreof the same .

CAPTAINS TON AT MHSOBLast Saturday MHSOB captain Garth

McLardie led his side to a preliminary finalvictory on his 23rd birthday. Today Garth willattempt to lead his side to a Grand Final victorywhilst playing his 100th game . Garth is a productof our Under 19s and the fact that he wasappointed club captain at the age of 22 is a justreward for the style of play that Garth hasbrought to the side . A very fast and classywinger Garth shows his football skills to goodeffect whether it be a long accurate handpassto a team mate running on or a long drop puntdeep into the forward line . Few players havethe skills to take towering marks as well aswinning the hard ball from the packs as Garthdoes and it is this above all else that makes himsuch a tenacious opponent and a great teamman. Garth has had a very good, consistentseason which has contributed greatly to ourside being in the Grand Final . All supportershope your 100th game day will be a memorableone for you Garth and will be a great doublewhen we caryy off the premiership flag .Congratulations on reaching the 100 game markwe look forward to you reaching the 200 gamemark with our great club .

DRAGONS 100th GAME IN GRAND FINALTo play your 100th game is in itself a

memorable game but to play this particularmilestone in a Grand Final is more than anyplayer could really want . At Clayton allsupporters and officials congratulate NoelHawley on reaching this target and wish himwell along with his team mates in today's FGrade Grand Final . Noel has been with theclub for a number of years and would havereached this milestone earlier except for aserious shoulder injury which kept him out ofthe game for some time . It is a testimony to himthat he has come back through the reserves toagain hold the form which will see him on thefield in today's Grand Final . Well done Noeland good luck with your game today and thenext 100 .

THERRY THROUGH TO FINAL

After a long and hard season both teh seniorsand reserves have reached the grand final in Csection . Congratulations must be extended toBernie Dunn and Chris Connelly the coacheswho have worked very hard to ensure a placein the finals for their respective teams . No matterwhat the outcome of next week's matches, ithas been a tremendous effort by all the playerswho have represented Therry this season . Onbehalf of all those who are associated with theclub I would like to wish the players all the bestof luck in the most important game of the year .

100 UP FOR DEVO AT DE LA!

Congratulations to Michael Deveson of beLa Salle who plays his 100th game for the clubgame against Collegians in the Preliminary Finaltoday . Michael was recruited to the Under 19'sin 1981, but after only 1 game he was promotedto the senior side where he has been a regularand consistent member of the team. He alsohas been a regular member of the Victorianamateur sides and this year played in thecarnival side, and also the games against theVFA and VCFL . After the Carnival Michael wasselected in the All Australian amateur side, which was a great achievement. During his 5years at the club he has played in the 1983 and84 premiership wins, won our Best 1st YearPlayer Trophy in 1981, and our Best & Fairesttrophy in 1982 and 83, and also won the VAFAA Section . Best and Fairest trophy in 1983 .Michael had a try out at Richmond, but theirloss was our gain, that saw him back at De Lawhere he truly belongs . Michael is a fineclubman and along with his father Ron, theircompany Dorans Tyres are great supporters ofthe club . Well done on your achievement, today,we all hope it will be a winning day that will takeus into our third consecutive Grand Final .
