REPORT OE THE BUREAU OF STREETS FOR THE THREE MONTHS ENDING OCTOBER 31, 1873. BUREAU OF STREETS, ) November I, 1873. J Van Nort, Commissioner of Hon. George M. Public Works : SIR— In accordance with your instruction have the honor to submit herewith a report of the transaction of the Bu.eau of Streets and Roads for the months of August, September and October of the present year. In addition to the ordinary work of maintain- ing and sprinkling the various roads and avenues, under the care of this Bureau, repairs have been made on 8th avenue, from Avenue St. Nicholas to Macomb's dam bridge, and on 124th and I32d streets, from 6th to 8th avenues; also on I52d street, between Boulevard and Hudson river; and on 151st street, from Avenue St. Nicholas to 10th avenue; and extensive repairs have been made on Breakneck Hill, from oth avenue to Avenue St. Nicholas; and Kingsbridge road, from 155th to l62d streets. Culverts have been built on the corner of 184th street and Kingsbridge road, to carry the water from the bend of the road. Lawrence street, from 9th avenue to the Boule- vard—there has been extensive repairs made in this street, on account of Croton water pipes hav- ing been laid, and as the street is constantly sinking, it requires filling and rolling to keep it in order. have the honor to submit herewith a report of the transaction of the Bu.eau of Streets and Roads for the months of August, September and October of the present year.

In addition to the ordinary work of maintain-ing and sprinkling the various roads and avenues, under the care of this Bureau, repairs have been made on 8th avenue, from Avenue St. Nicholas to Macomb's dam bridge, and on 124th and I32d streets, from 6th to 8th avenues; also on I52d street, between Boulevard and Hudson river; and on 151st street, from Avenue St. Nicholas to 10th avenue; and extensive repairs have been made on Breakneck Hill, from oth avenue to Avenue St. Nicholas; and Kingsbridge road, from 155th to l62d streets. Culverts have been built on the corner of 184th street and Kingsbridge road, to carry the water from the bend of the road. Lawrence street, from 9th avenue to the Boule-vard—there has been extensive repairs made in this street, on account of Croton water pipes hav-ing been laid, and as the street is constantly sinking, it requires filling and rolling to keep it in order.

Forty-third street; Rheinhart's, 23 Bowery; Hart man's, 45 and 47 Bowery; New York Hotel, and the Anthony House, 834 Broadway—in eight of which the means of egress and escape, and the appliances for safety and protection in case of fire were reported as sufficient, and in the remaining three of those enumerated additional fire safe guards have been recommended.

FACTORIES. Three factories have been reinspected during

the week, each of which are reported as not having been provided, in compliance with recom-mendations of the Department, with additional means of egress or escape in case of fire.

SCHOOL HOUSES. Three school houses have been inspected, as

follows, to wit: Building located at from 28 to 34 Allen street, in which ceilings are reported as having been made safe; school house northeast corner Ninth street and First avenue, ceilings re-ported as made safe, and the unsafe rear building No. 66 Chrystie street reported as in progress of being made safe under direction ana super-vision of this Department.

The work of clearing Riverside Park from 104th street 1o 120th street was ordered. The Landscape Architect was directed to examine the plans, heretofore adopted for a boar house, with a view of combining therewith accommoda-tion for skaters, and to report upon a suitable site for the same.
