Spotlight on........ AFC Aldermaston Tots U5’s-U8’s Coach
John Graham Coaching the tots is a real challenge and I regularly have to rely on my many years of coaching experience. Starting way back in the late 80s I completed a 2 year sports and recreation foundation course and went on to teach PE in the local schools in Cumbria, this led to carrying out my coaching badges which I have updated to the modern level 1 certificates. I worked in Burnham Copse teaching football skills for several years on my Friday afternoons and recently completed a rules of the game session for year 5 & 6 pupils consisting of 12 weeks which seemed to go down well as I believe these types of teaching sessions are missed, explanations of foul throws and the offside rule was well received and led to many questions. The AFC Aldermaston Tots have been around for a few years now, however I only joined in January 17 as their head coach and the numbers have swelled accordingly to keep me on my toes. Of course one coach can’t look after 18 tots so I have been thankful to Kyle Bone for his help and more recently to Ian Blackman, I believe if you break the groups into smaller numbers then coaching is easier and has more quality. The Tots played in the Basingstoke Colts tournament in June playing 5 games of 8 minutes against other teams winning 1 drawing 1 and losing 3, however it wasn’t about the results it was about playing the game and enjoying the day before receiving a competitors medal and of course the necessary burger and ice cream, I only had the burger……. The Tots will be attending two summer football schools at Rec Soc which will include looking at the home team’s dressing room and facilities as well as discussions on the game and rules of the game in a light hearted manner. We have a mixed group of Tots with girls and boys of differing ages from 4 to 7 and all seem to enjoy playing and learning the game, who knows one day one of them may play for AFC Aldermaston or………….. score the winner for England in the world cup final and in some cases maybe even Scotland.
From the Chairman........... Martin Desay
“A warm welcome”
Hello and welcome to the Rec Soc! It feels like a big day for our football club, as we play our first ever game in the FA Vase today against Romsey Town, of the Wessex League. Therefore, we extend a very warm welcome our visitors Rom-sey Town, their officials, players, supporters and also to to-
day’s match officials to our ground and we trust you located us without too much diffi-culty, and also travel back safely after the game. I must say we have really been looking forward to being involved in the Vase, since we entered in June. Its particularly good to have been drawn at home, and we are looking forward to a lively and competitive cup tie played in the best of spirits, in front of a big crowd (for us !). We have of course met Romsey Town previously several years ago when we also played in the Wessex and Hampshire leagues. Our last season in the Wessex was a very difficult and tough year for us. It caused us to really think about the club and what we were striving to achieve. We knew we wanted to return to step 6 football as soon as possible, and it’s great to see we have achieved that via the Hampshire Premier and Thames Valley Premier Leagues, re-entering the Hellenic League Div 1 East last season. We have in place most of the requirements for step 6 football ground grading, and are currently planning to install a 50 seat stand after the end of this season. So back to today’s game. We have some special guests today, and welcome AFC Aldermaston Atomic Tots (our very young footballers!) and their parents to today’s game. The tots will form the guard of honour, walking out along side the players before the start of the match. Please give them a big round of applause as they take the field with the players, as I’m sure it will mean a great deal to them. A special thanks to John Graham, Tots coach for suggesting and organising this event. In our last game against Chinnor, we survived a bit of a rocky first half, and hit our stride in the second half, scoring 4 goals and settling our early season nerves. I know Kieran and the boys felt much better after the game with 3 points in the bag. So, we will be looking to pick up where we left off, going into this cup tie, looking for a win today. So let’s look forward to a great and competitive cup tie, played in the right spirit with due respect shown by players and supporters to today’s match officials. I’m sure AFC will work hard and get a positive result to send us all home in a cheerful mood and good spirits. The best of luck to both teams, for an enjoyable and competitive game. Please join us in the bar after the game for a post-match drink and chat.

This Weeks Match Report
Saturday 2nd September AFC Aldermaston v Chinnor Both teams went into the match with patchy form from their first few games of the season. AFC were looking to get their first points from the game. As the match commenced, AFC looked edgy and lacking in confidence for most of the first half, both teams made several chances, however Chinnor had the best of the chances, and probably felt unlucky not to be leading at the break. The second half was a very different matter, as a half time rollicking from Kieran, certainly had the desired effect, as AFC came out all guns blazing and put 4 goals past Chinnor to seal and emphatic win and bring home the 3 points. Kai Parton-Edey opened the proceedings on 54 minutes with a smart shot with the outside of his left foot after some good link up play with Chace Jewell. This settled AFC nerves, and they went further ahead on 59 minutes when Dan Alliston rounded the keeper to score, to make it 2-0. AFC were well on top now as Chinnor tired during the final quarter. Goal number 3 was scored by Chace Jewell following a good left wing run from Karl Hanks, who put a pin point cross across the goal to an incoming Liam Tackley whose sweet half volley rebounded of the foot of the post straight to the feet of Jewell who wasted no time in putting the ball into the net. The final goal was scored on 90 minutes, when after some good defensive work by Blunt, the ball was played out wide by Jewell, who then found Hanks out wide left, Hanks beat the defender and cut inside to score with a neat right foot shot across the goal into the far corner. A great second half performance with 4 goals and 3 points, has taken the pressure off for now, and nicely sets up AFC for their upcoming FA Vase tie against Romsey Town on 9th September 3.00pm at the Rec Soc.
Our club was founded as AWRE Football Club in 1952 by Charles Green, Ted Hall, Gordon Carter, and Don Sharp, and were nicknamed "The Atom Men" after the new-ly founded Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. As the AWRE complex was still under construction when the club was established, the players used empty con-tractors' huts as changing rooms – carrying the tin bath into whichever building was designated for that day's football. The players were also responsible for the pitch, and would mow and mark out the pitch before the match started. The club received support from Sir William Penney during his work at AWRE on the Operation Hurricane project. In the late 1960s/early 1970s, we changed our name, to AFC Aldermaston. In 1979 we were promoted from the Reading & District League into Division One of the Hellenic League, where we spent the next seven seasons. From 1986 until 1991 we played in local football leagues, including the North Hampshire League, before joining Division Three of the Hampshire League in 1991. We finished fifth in the first season, earning promotion to Division Two. However, we were soon relegated back to Division Three the following season, where we remained until 1999. When the Hampshire League was re-organised prior to the 1999–2000 season, we were placed in the Premier Division. When the Hampshire and Wessex Leagues merged in 2004, we became members of Division Two of the Wessex League. At the end of the 2004–05 season we suffered relegation. The division was renamed Division Two in 2006, and was disbanded at the end of the 2006–07 season, and as a result we moved up back up to Division One. 2009–10 season, was our worst season and during a very difficult time we lost 40 consecutive games, which broke the previous record of 39 straight losses held jointly by Stockport United and Poole Town. The 40th defeat came on 8 April 2010, a 2–0 loss to Downton. This was undoubtedly the worst time for the club in living memory, and it took a great effort to keep going at this time. The losing streak thankfully came to an end on 10 April 2010, when we club drew 1–1 against Warminster Town, and then finally winning the next match against Petersfield Town 2–1 win for Aldermaston, to provide a much needed boost for all of us at that difficult time. Unsurprisingly, we finished bottom of Division One with just the one win in 40 matches, and were relegated to the Hampshire Premier League, where played for four seasons before moving to the Thames Valley Premier League for season 2014-15, when we reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup, which we narrowly lost 2-1 to Hale Leys Utd, the final of the Reading Senior Cup played at the Madjeski ,which we lost 1-0 to champions Marlow Utd, and the final of the Basingstoke Senior Cup where we lost to our local rivals Tadley Calleva 2-1 AET. 2015-16 season we finished seventh in the TVPL Premier Division, and again reaching the final of the Reading Senior Cup only to be beaten in a fourth final 1-0 to Cookham Dean. We made a welcome return to Step 6 football as we were promoted to Division One East of the Hellenic League. 2016-17 saw us finish 7th in the Hellenic League this matched our highest ever finish at Step 6 football. We are looking forward to see what season 2017-18 brings and if we can improve on last seasons league position.
Romsey Town FC Club History Nickname: The Town Romsey Town Football Club is a football club based in Romsey, Hampshire, England. The club competes in the Wessex League Division One which is the tenth tier of English football. The club is affiliated to the Hampshire Football Association and is an FA chartered Standard club[1] Formed in 1886, Romsey have al-ways been around the 9th and 10th tiers of English Football but have once in their history reached the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in the 1990–91 season. They were among the founding members of the Wessex League in 1986. The club plays at the Bypass Ground which they moved to in 1956. The club was formed in 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall "to consider the desirability of forming a football club in the town." Initially they played at Alma Road and in 1889 began playing in local league football where they had successful spells in a number of competitions before joining the Southampton League as founder members in 1908. The 1920s were a good decade for Romsey Town and after winning the Hampshire Intermediate Cup and the Southampton Senior League they gained entry into the Hampshire League but struggled in the West Division and returned to local football after just one season. In 1930, Romsey moved to Priestlands, which is now Romsey School, and returned to the Hampshire League where they were placed in Division 2. Here the club were better prepared as they went on to produce some of their best attacking sides, featuring well in both league and cup competitions. In 1956, they were relegated and moved to their current home, The Bypass Ground. Romsey continued in Division 3 but the early 1960s saw a further decline in fortune, eventually resulting in relegation from the league in 1964. Because the football pyramid was not yet in existence, the club were forced to drop right down to replace their reserves in Junior Division 1 of the Southampton League and it was not until 1968 that they won promotion back to the senior section. By the 1970s, the club started to re-surface out of the doldrums of lower league football and after three successive promotions and a Southampton Senior Cup triumph in 1974. Romsey regained their Hampshire League status in 1975 where they promptly won the Division 4 title at the first attempt. Romsey proceeded to end the decade on a high note, again winning promotion and the Hampshire Intermediate Cup in 1978 followed by arguably their finest hour a year later when they won Division 2 title and unexpectedly defeated Farnborough Town 1–0 in the Hampshire Senior Cup final played at The Dell.

The 1980s saw Romsey consolidate in Division 1 before becoming founder members of
the Wessex League in 1986. Here they soon became a strong force, and after some encouraging campaigns, they clinched the title in 1990 and enjoyed numerous good cup
runs, most notably in 1990 when they lost 1–2 at home to Littlehampton Town in the 4th
Qualifying Round of the FA Cup.
A change of personnel saw Romsey fall into decline, and after a nightmare season in
1993 they were relegated back to Division 1 of the Hampshire League, from where they
were again relegated. Despite these setbacks, Romsey bounced back and within two
years they had won the Southampton Senior Cup and promotion back to the Wessex
League. However, they struggled in what had become a much harder competition. In
1998, Romsey were again relegated back to the Hampshire League and a series of
managers and large turn-over of players saw them slip into the league's third division. In
2003, the club hit an all-time low when they bottom but the club were re-elected, and
since then they have enjoyed a remarkable upturn in fortunes.
In 2004 the Wessex League absorbed the original Hampshire League and due to their
facilities Romsey were placed in Division 1 and after some encouraging final placings
they won promotion in 2007 back to the top flight, now known as the Premier Division. In
the 2007–08 season with manager Glenn Burnett at the helm Romsey's team spirit was
at an all-time high. The team were performing well on the pitch as well with two
consecutive mid-table finishes really consolidating Romsey's position in the Wessex
Premier League. At the end of the 2009–10 season, Glenn Burnett decided to step down
blaming his decision to leave on how much he had to do at the club. Assistant manager
Lee
Harrison soon followed suit, as well as a large percentage of the squad that Glenn had
been crafting over the last few seasons. In the 2010–11 season, backed by the new
management duo of Wayne Mew and Stuart Long, began with many trials as Romsey
searched to rebuild a team. In the end Romsey finished in 16th position in the league
despite a lack of players. One of the high points of the season was Romsey's
longest-serving and most prolific player in their history, Simon De'ath, who finished with
25 league goals, placing him seventh in the goalscorer charts.
Wayne Mew continued at the helm for the 2011–12 and managed to keep hold of striker
Simon De'ath despite interest from numerous other clubs. Following one of Romsey's
most successful seasons, where Simon De'ath was once again top scorer, after finishing
in 8th place alongside two cup quarter finals, manager Wayne Mew decided to resign
from the Bypass Ground. Francis Benali also resigned from the post as reserve team
boss.
On Thursday 31 May, Romsey appointed Danny Barker as manager taking over from
former boss Wayne Mew. In his first full season in charge of the club, the side finished
second bottom in the league but were spared relegation after Hayling United were
relegated due to ground grading issues.
On 22 October 2013, manager Danny Barker resigned from his post with the club sitting
in 22nd place in the league. Carl Bennett and later John McFarlane took over as
co-managers but on 30 April 2014, James Phillips was appointed the new head coach,
after the club finished bottom of the league.
