DMSC SHORT SHOTS ● Important reminder. The next meeting is December 15 -- one week earlier than usual because of the holiday. It will be the annual Christmas Dinner event. There’s no speaker, so members can spend their time enjoying all the great food and cama-raderie. Member’s spouses, significant others, and insignificant others are invited. ● Regarding the Christmas dinner, our answer to Pearl Mesta (if that name is fa-miliar to you, you’re over 50), Ted Hildabrand, encourages any member who wants to volunteer to bring appetizers to do so. You can contact Ted at (724)942-2125 for more information. Ted thanks you in advance. ● At the December Board Meeting, the Board voted on the executive staff struc-ture. The officers are now: President, George Taylor Vice-president, Doug Gawronski Treasurer, Ell Vines Recording Secretary, Allan Jaworski Executive Range Officer, Bruce Ungar Congratulations, gentlemen, as we look forward to a well-governed 2012 at DMSC. ● The DMSC entry in the Pittsburgh and Suburban Rifle League is sporting a 4 wins-1 loss record heading into December. The 2011-12 schedule and recent high-lights are on Page 8. ● Bob Kirsopp reports our rifle sight-in day was a success. Two dozen rifles were porcessed and the proceeds, along with some supplemental funding, went to the WCO David Grove Memorial Fund. A story and pictures are on Page 9 ● Allan Jaworski reports that our second annual Combat Rifle Match was also suc-

cessful. Fifteen shooters attempted the challenging course. Ten of them were new shooters. That is, they hadn’t fired in any of our previous CMP or NRA events this year. The story, pictures, and results are on Pages 10 and 11. Thanks to the six range safety officers who monitored the match to ensure a safe shooting en-vironment. ● Ted Hildabrand has set up a new Wednesday morning program for open air rifle shooting. It will begin January 4 at 10:30AM, and precede the noon open pistol shoot. Call Ted at (724)942-2125, or Dave Faust at (724)225-9057 for de-tails.

● Indoor pistol shooters, fear not. We are still working with the United States Revolver Association to set up a winter postal league, as we have in past years. The league usually starts in January, so the USRA may have its administrative problems resolved in time to administer a program. If all else fails, we will develop an in-house program. ● Ron Watton is meeting with the North-South Skirmish Association in January to get approval for DMSC to host a Civil War skirmish.

● We picked up a 60 month power-train warrantee for our New Holland tractor at a very good price and also purchased a Husqvarna chain saw. (You can call it a “Husky”.)

• The hand-traps will be available throughout the winter.

● Finally, thanks again to the many who made 2011 such a great year at the Dor-mont-Mt.Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club.

SUMMARY OF KEY ACTIVITIES – 2011

• We had a number of interesting programs which consisted of: √ A presentation by Mary Anna Johnson of Johnson’s sporting Goods who

discussed selling firearms on consignment. √ A presentation by WCO Dan Sitler on the changes in the hunting

regulations √ A presentation by George Romanoff of Ace Sporting Goods on the

” what’s new” in the Firearms Industry based on what he learned at the SHOT Show

• The tenants left the property at the beginning of the year. During the first part of

the year, the house trailer was removed and the area that the trailer occupied

was graded and seeded.

• We welcomed Brian Fink as the new Membership Chairman for the Club.

• The Club decommissioned the septic system and installed sewer lines to the

new sewer system.

• All of our programs had a successful year with increased participation.

• John Tupta was presented the Allegheny County sportsman of the Year award

for his efforts in supporting the Club and growing the high power rifle program.

• Bob Kirsopp is coordinating equipment repair and servicing.

• Ted Hildabrand is the key person who organized and supervised all the work

parties. He also has coordinated all of the meals for the meeting nights.

• The Club hosted the Washington County Envirothon youth event.

• We established a library for hunting and firearms related books and magazines.

Feel free to use the library and to donate to it.

• We had a number of work parties which started in May and continued on a

monthly basis through October. A lot of maintenance was accomplished and

the Club grounds look the best that they have in years. Thanks to all who par-

ticipated. Without your help, the Club would not be in the good condition that it

is in! We will continue these monthly work parties next year.

As the event chair, Bob Kirsopp enlisted the help of Miles Ford, Dave Willard, Ken Zupkow, Ron Watton and Bruce Ungar to help area shooters get their rifles ready for the firearms deer season. The team processed 24 rifles through the sighting-in procedure, providing guidance, scoping service, and even bore-sighting as needed. As part of our community outreach pro-gram, Working In The Neighborhood (WIN), we usually donate the proceeds from our annual rifle sight-in day to a local charity. This year, to show our gratitude and respect for the Pennsylvania Conser-vation Officers who enforce the sporting regulations, we supplemented the sight-in proceeds and donated $200 to the WCO David Grove Memorial Fund. A little over a year ago, Officer Grove, age 31, was shot and killed in the line of duty while investigating reports of ongoing night-time shooting and possible poaching activity in Adams County.

DMSC 2011 Combat Rifle Match

It was a fantastic November day for a rifle match. The temperature was in the high 50’s, the sky was clear, and the wind was blowing. Fifteen shooters competed in the 8-stage, 80 round, 400-point Combat Rifle match. The AR-15 in various configurations was the predominate rifle, with twelve of fifteen shooter using a variation of the AR platform with an assortment of optics and open sights. A FN FS2000 (suppressed no less), a Saiga in .308, and an M1 carbine were also present on the line. Shooters dem-onstrated their marksmanship in a series of fast paced skills designed to test their ability to deliver accu-rate, rapid shots from a number of positions, including standing (from both the strong and support sides), kneeling, and prone. Additionally the use of cover was required, firing both underneath and around a barricade, as well as malfunction clearance drills (induced by dummy rounds). Competitors were also required to run 50 yards prior to firing in the La Mans stage, and move laterally in the Move and Scoot stage. A summary of the course of fire is below (Stages 1-7 at 50 yards, stage 8 at 100 yards):

• Stage 1: Offhand –full silhouette target. fire 5 rounds, reload with 5 rounds in 30 seconds.

• Stage 2: Offhand support side –full silhouette target. Transition from strong side to support side, fire 5 rounds in 30 seconds. Repeat.

• Stage 3: Malfunction clearance – full silhouette target. Fire 10 rounds, clearing malfunction as needed in 30 seconds.

• Stage 4: Undercover – full silhouette target. Fire 10 rounds underneath barricade in 60 seconds.

• Stage 5: Barricade – partially concealed silhouette target. Fire 5 rounds from kneeling position around right side of barricade, 5 rounds around left side of barricade in 60 seconds

• Stage 6: Le Mans - partially concealed silhouette target. Start 50 yards behind firing line. Run to firing line, shoot 10 rounds at target in 60 seconds.

• Stage 7: Scoot and Shoot – partially concealed silhouette target, 2 rounds offhand, 3 rounds kneel-ing, move and reload, 5 rounds prone

• Stage 8: Hostage – hostage rescue silhouette target, 10 rounds slow fire prone The scoring results are on the next page. --Reported by Alan Jaworski

MEETING NOTES FROM THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY SPORTSMEN’S LEAGUE AND THE WASHINGTON COUNTY SPORTSMEN’S AND CONSERVATION LEAGUE (Delegates Mike Yanchak and Bob Kirsopp) ALLEGHENY COUNTY The Allegheny County Sportsmen's League will not be meeting in December. Mark your calendar for January 12, 2012 at the Gold Room of the Allegheny County Courthouse. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! ACSL Secretary, S. Barnett WASHINGTON COUNTY (November) PGC. WCO Rich Joyce reported for the Game Commission. Rich reported on several changes in the trapping regula-tions. Bobcat and Fisher permits can be purchased through the agency’s license sale system for $6.70. Bobcat season will run from Dec. 17 – Jan. 8 and the hunting season Jan.17 – Feb.7. Both seasons will only be open in WMUs 2A,C,E,F,G, 3A,B,C, 4A,D,&E. Anyone harvesting a bobcat or fisher must report the harvest to the Game Commission within 48 hours. Beaver trappers do not have to have har-vested beavers tagged by Game Com-mission personnel. PFBC. WCO Sean Sauserman reported on a recycled frac-water pipeline rupture that occurred near a tributary of Brush Run Creek on October 31st. Range Re-sources reported that the spill was imme-diately contained by a quickly excavated trench, though some of the fluid may have reached a nearby unnamed tributary of

Buffalo Creek. Chemical testing of the creek done by the state Department of Environmental Protection showed no ele-vated levels of total dissolved solids or impacted aquatic species, DEP officials said. It was unclear how much of the fluid may have gotten into the creek.

The December meeting will feature a pot-luck covered dish Christmas dinner.

GAME COMMISSION As of December 5, preliminary bear har-vest results from the state’s three recently concluded seasons show that hunters harvested 3,968 bears, which would rank the total harvest as the second highest in Pennsylvania history. Here’s the break-down: √ five-day archery bear season - 257 √ four-day bear season - 3154 √ extended bear season - 557 FISH AND BOAT COMMISSION Anglers can purchase a 2012 license be-ginning December 1, which gives them a bonus month for free. A voucher may be redeemed at any of more than 900 issuing agents across the state. PFBC is seeking public comments on an environmental assessment review the agency has drafted as part of its applica-tion for a federal grant.
