President’s Message – by Peter Dielschneider

Even though the weather lately may not indicate it, the winter season is definitely upon us.

Where has the year gone? Hope everyone has had a productive carving year.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you & your significant other to join with other club members for our annual

Christmas Party

Date: Thursday, December 21, 2017

Place: Neil Balkwill

Time: 7 PM We will have snacks and non- alcoholic drinks,

This is an evening to mingle and chat with others and to see some of the carvings members have

been working on throughout the year.

DISPLAY TABLE – Bring some of your carvings or other art that you have been working on to

put on the display table so that we have a good selection for everyone to look at and discuss.

EXCHANGE TABLE – Bring one piece of art to be given away. We will use our regular

process of drawing names to identify who gets to take which item home with them. The more

exchange pieces we get, the more fun it is.

Mostly, bring your Holiday Spirit to share with others as we mingle and enjoy the evening.

Comfort Bird Carving Bee (by Herb Klassen)

On November 25, 11 carvers gathered at Tory’s shop to carve comfort birds. With the head start

that Wayne Cann gave us, we were able to get about 60 birds done for Gerry Ford’s project.

Thanks to Tory for hosting us and arranging a delicious lunch. Also thanks to Peter and Mike for

taking some pictures and sharing them with us. I had the privilege of delivering the birds to

Gerry. I think the smile says it all!

Editor’s Note

I missed carving comfort birds with the club this year and have been feeling a bit of regret. It’s

really great to see wood carving used for good rather than evil (just kidding, it’s all for good of

course). At least Leo didn’t have a chance to heckle me as I struggled to get my apron on.

Feeling like I needed something to get me out of my funk, I turned to one of my favorite web

resources, Pinterest. Perhaps many of you are already familiar with the Pinterest site. If so you

know that it’s loaded with images & ideas contributed by many talented ingenious people. I

spend my time with the endless wood working/carving/outdoor/survivalist/vegetarian pins.

Being a bit more inspired I decided to get a start on some relief carving (something I’ve never

tried before). However, before starting I had to tool-up and make some dust in the shop.

Recalling the Everett Ellenwood video “Beginning Woodcarving” (presented last month by Linda

Anderson), I decided to cobble together one of Everett’s work surfaces. (As always, the work

took less time than the clean-up). Anyhow here’s a picture of my finished “Ellenwood” work

surface. Now, before I start…

I’ll risk not being PC and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year (of trying

new things)!
