Five teams will vie for the 2019 United Equestrian Conference championship this week as the University of Tennessee at Martin plays host to the three-day tournament on March 21-23. All competitions will begin at 10 a.m. at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Pavilion. The event begins on Thursday, March 21 when No. 4 seed UT Martin takes on No. 5 South Dakota State in the quarterfinal round. The winner advances to play No. 1 SMU on Friday, March 22 while No. 2 Delaware State also battles No. 3 Fresno State in the semifinals that same day. The two semifinal victors will clash on Saturday, March 23 to determine the league champion. The tournament involves three current representatives in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association top-10 rankings (No. 6 SMU, No. 9 Fresno State and No. 10 UT Martin). Delaware State and South Dakota State also regularly appeared in the national top-10 poll during the early stages of the 2018-19 season. SMU is 7-4 overall and claimed the top seed in the tournament after going a perfect 3-0 in UEC play. Delaware State (4-7) tallied a 3-2 mark against UEC competition while Fresno State (4-7) and UT Martin (4-6) each went 2-2 against league foes. South Dakota State went 1-7 this season with an 0-3 conference mark. This is the second time that the Skyhawks have hosted the UEC Championship. UT Martin hosted and won the inaugural UEC Championship tournament in 2013 and was followed by South Dakota State (2014), Fresno State (2015), New Mexico State (2016), Delaware State (2017) and SMU (2018) – as six different schools have seized the championship over the last six years.

JUDGING AND SCORINGIn head-to-head equestrian meets, there are two discplines, Hunter Seat and Western with four events: hunter seat equitation on the flat and over fences, and western horsemanship and reining. In each event, athletes from each team ride head-to-head on the same set of horses, which are provided by the host school. Licensed judges through the National Governing Body, United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) score each individual ride and compare the score only against the other team’s ride on the same horse. The higher of the two scores receives a point. Points are tallied and a winner is named for each event, dicipline and overall

competition.

Hunter Seat Equitation over FencesEach rider jumps a predetermined course and fences set up to 3.6’ in height. The rider is scored on form and consistency to present a smooth, polished effort in which the horse is postitioned properly

for the distance to each fence. The event is scored out of 100.

Hunter Seat Equitation on the FlatA test of nine maneuvers is perfomed in a small scale arena. Common maneuvers can include circles, changes in lead, and lengthening of stride. The judge scores each maneuver as well as a collective mark

from 0-10 resulting in a total out of a 100.

Western HorsemanshipA predetermined pattern is preformed by each rider. Maneuvers include pivots, stops, backs, circles and control of pace at the lope and jog. Each ride is scored out of a base of 70 with each maneuver

assessed a score of -1.5-1.5 in half point increments.

Western ReiningEach rider performs a predetermined pattern consisting of spins, circles (large/fast and slow/small), roll backs, and sliding stops. The ride is scored based on accuracy and speed of maneuvers. Each ride is scored out of a base of 70 with each maneuver assessed a score of -1.5-1.5 in half point increments.
