Page 1 Greetings Brother Knights, Summer is almost upon us and we are on the verge of another incredibly busy time. With the help of every mem- ber, we are looking down the barrel of a State Convention and the opening of Spring Fest with a motorcycle to raf- fle off. Let’s not forget that we are also looking at new officer slates for the upcoming Knight’s year. This is the time that tells us what we are made of. Know what? This is a pretty incredible group. Now, I’m not talking about the do-nothing members who only want to parade around with insignia and ID cards. I’m talking about those stalwart souls who give it their all and pitch in to aid the efforts of Knights and Ladies who are dedicated to the acts of charity we are pledged to perform. I cannot thank all of you enough for being members of The Knights of Columbus and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus. Father McGivney is watching and smiling down upon us. Let me get back to the schedule at hand, such as it is. Our State Convention begins on May 4, on the day after the motorcycle raffle ticket sale kicks off on the boardwalk. Please pitch in a few hours to sell tickets and possibly meet a new face you may not have had the opportunity to have worked with. Keep in mind that we will be going at this all summer long, so pace your- selves. The Convention will only span 3 days, but it is a great time to meet, greet and make new friends for life. Every Knight and Lady I have ever met are all of the same mind. They work hard at every event, smile through tired lips and never will turn down the chance to serve others in the name of the Knights of Columbus. Makes me proud. Don’t forget Breakfast Sunday. The new slate of officers will be announced by the nominating committee at the May business meeting. Please make every effort to attend and consider who you want to lead us into the next year. We have some very dynamic people considering that step up to the plate, and I support them all and thank them for following their conscience. I, personally, have never been one to say that because I’ve done it before, that I have no interest in doing it again. These men are exactly of that same mind set. This translates directly into a great officer core for our Council. Remember, everyone of us brings to the group effort unique experi- ence and invaluable knowledge of running operations. If you are not stepping up, at the very least, support these people and once in a while, say “thanks” for doing what you won’t do. I’ll leave you with this: Our first and foremost principle is Charity. Everything we do is somehow translated into Charity. Fa- ther McGivney founded our group as a Charitable organization with an eye to supporting our fellow Knights and their families as our primary goal. Keep in mind those who are ill, injured, or experiencing some trouble. They are our brothers and sisters. Don’t let anyone suffer alone. Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said: “The worst kind of poverty is loneliness.” Keep in touch with your organization and keep it vital to our churches, and communities. Greetings Brother Knights,

Summer is almost upon us and we are on the verge of another incredibly busy time. With the help of every mem-ber, we are looking down the barrel of a State Convention and the opening of Spring Fest with a motorcycle to raf-fle off. Chaplain’s Message Reverend John Lunness

Very often in the sacrament of reconciliation I offer as a penance to the penitent to say one Our Father, the prayer that we were taught by Jesus Christ himself. God taught us that. God himself has taught us to pray. Because of this we have to take very seriously the content of the prayer and we have to believe that all of the things in it are very important to God. This prayer, taught to us by God, takes precedence over all of the prayers that are given to us by the Church. This article is the fifth of a series to discuss all aspects of the “Our Father”.

Our Father (January) Who art in heaven (February) Hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come Thy will be done On earth As it is in heaven (March) Give us this day Our daily bread (April) And forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those Who trespass against us

And lead us not Into temptation But deliver us from evil.

There has been some controversy following Pope Francis’ declaration that the English translation of the Lord’s Prayer seems mean. God doesn’t lead us into temptation. That of course is correct that God does not set traps for his people by leading us into temptation. We also have to remind ourselves that Pope Francis does not speak English and we also must remind ourselves that Catholicism is worldwide so the Lord’s Prayer has been translat-ed into many, many languages. As any linguist will tell us French is different than German which is different from Swahili. That said let’s delve into these lines as English speakers. We all should have been taught that God does not lead us into temptation. On the contrary it is the devil who leads us into temptation. Remember the story of the Garden of Eden? It was the devil that was the temper NOT God. What we are asking for in the Lord’s Prayer is for God to protect us from temptation the way he did by telling Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree in the center of the garden. God clearly did not lead them into temptation and in fact tried to protect them by telling them not to eat from that tree.

Hence the necessity for the last line; “deliver us from evil.” Deliver us from the devil, the snake in the garden, and his temptations, his temptations are always evil. “Deliver us from evil”, is also a minor exorcism. We all need to be delivered from evil because evil is constantly at work around us and wants nothing more than for us to

lose our immortal souls. Deliver us from evil…AMEN! Don’t forget—you can come pray the Rosary with us every Thursday at 11:00am.

From our Faithful Navigator, Wayne Straight Greetings, Brother Sir Knights, I can’t believe it’s May, already. We should be getting our first Christmas catalogs soon! Here’s a reminder of what’s coming up this month. Our next meeting is Thursday, May 19th, at 6:30. We will be announcing our slate of officers for the next year. A special thanks to all those who stepped up for our As-sembly. Meet me on the boardwalk on Thursday, May 3rd, at noon. The Elks will be honoring the next set of Hometown Heroes including our own Carl Windmiller and Charlie, one of our regulars from Bingo. Please come and support our first breakfast on Sunday, May 6th. All proceeds will be going to the 4th Degree. Note that this one breakfast will start at 7:00 am to accommodate our fellow Knights from the Maryland State Con-vention. On May 19th at 2:00 pm, we have a date to visit with some of the residents at Brandywine Senior Living. On May 21st, at 1:00 pm, the Color Corps will participate in a May crowning with the Ladies Auxilia-ry. I hope to have a date for you soon for our visit to Fort Miles, and I’d also like to host a BBQ at Home of the Brave sometime around the Memorial Day weekend. Finally, I’d like to highlight one of our Brothers every month. This is not the same as the council’s Knight of the Month. It’s going to be a “Did you know” that Neil Foote, met Kathy on a Blind Date? Wow! I didn’t know that kind of thing ever worked out! Neil was the Athletic Director at St. John’s in Clinton, MD. He was the youngest of ten children. (I’ll bet they really spoiled him.) After serving in Korea for 2 years, he received his electronics technician certification from a school in DC where my wife’s father taught. (I wonder if they knew each other?) Neil was very instrumental in obtaining the occupancy permit for our new hall in 1996. (I think he should be collecting our rent instead of Home Corps.) As always, in closing, please keep all those who serve and protect us both here and abroad in your prayers. Don’t forget our aging Veterans who have earned our love and respect.

Vivat Jesus, Wayne

Right To Life—Bill McGarrity and Mike Carozza

The Shirley Grace Pregnancy Center Gala took place on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the Ocean City Conven-tion Center. We had 29 Knights, spouses and friends seated at the three tables sponsored by the Knights of Co-lumbus # 9053 and the 4th degree Knights. The evening started out with some very delicious items to munch on beginning at about 5:00 PM. An excellent three course surf and turf dinner was served to the 550 attendees after 6:00 PM. Following dinner the evening's program started. It included a video, and then "America's Got Talent" recording artist Nikki Edgar and her daughter. A number of presentations followed, along with an opportunity to donate or pledge resources to the SGPC, to help support the work of the Center. The wining 50/50 ticket number was called out and a lucky winner walked away well over $1,000. Next ,all of the silent auctions winners were made public and the winners went to pick up the items they bid on. I was one of the fortunate winners and I walked away with a very nice basket containing a model sailing ship from Linen Out-let, a certificate for 2 greens fees and cart fees from the Bay Club in Berlin, a sweat shirt hoodie, and a $100.00 certificate for spirits at a local establishment that sells spirits. Many other very nice items were up for bid at the silent auction, including stays at local hotels. Finally the evening ended with a DJ playing some dance music so the crowd could show their best dance moves out on the dance floor. Remember to please pray for the unborn, their mothers, their fathers and all the hard working people who try to help these young people at pregnancy centers like the SGPC. Many of these young people have no religion and no one to help them in their time of need. Mike Carozza and Bill McGarrity

Our Community Director, SK Tom Foglesong, once again did a great job orchestrating and hosting the Annual Presentation of Awards to ‘public service’ individuals of Ocean City, Maryland, as well as, key volunteers of our Council. This annual event took place during the Council’s April Social Meeting on Wednesday, 25 April. A couple of the highlights occurred toward the end of the presentations: the look on SK Tom Irwin’s face when he heard his name announced as Knight of the Year, the announcement of SK Wayne Straight and Mary Straight as the Family of the Year, and the special award to the Very Reverend Paul F. Jennings, Jr., a.k.a. Father Jennings. Congratulations to all of the honorees!! Following the awards ceremony, everyone enjoyed the social with desserts

and coffee in honor of the honorees. Please see a few photos on page 12…

From our Insurance Man: Knights of Columbus Financial Programs If you don’t have Long Term Care Insurance…you better have plenty of life insurance! Why? Think about what the financial costs associated with long term care (home health care, assisted living facilities and nursing homes). When one spouse needs this care – the other spouse could be drained of a good portion of the assets the couple saved all their life for. Possibly you want-ed to leave assets to your children or grandchildren…a long term care health issue can use up most if not all of those assets. The only “leveraged” financial vehicle that will come to the rescue of real dollar assets is LIFE INSURANCE. (Meaning – you pay pennies on the dollar for life insurance whereas your assets are earned dollar for dollar). Don’t have long term care insurance – don’t “believe” in it…or feel it’s too expensive…or maybe you are too old to get it…better have plenty of life insurance. Fortunately the Knights of Columbus issues life insurance up to age 80. If you have a health issue we may still be able to insure you! Most financial problems are caused by lack of planning or lack of thinking through all of possible issues of a potential problem. Allow me to help you…I’ve been doing this 35 years. Bob Marlowe, CLU, FICF, LUTCF 410-823-3800

LADIES’ AUXILIARY President’s Message, April, 2018

By: Dee Matthews, President

Next Meeting - May 21st, Doors Open at 12:45 Mary’s Month In spite of all the personal choices, mostly based on “my” birthday or “my” anniversary, or “my” something or another, for favorite month of the year, the Washington Post actually did a Gallup survey in 2015, and the results were pretty close to another survey that was done in 2005. So it must be official (and I guessed it, as well) May is the official Fa-vorite Month of the Year. “But, what,” you may ask, “about ‘What is so rare as a day in June’?” So sorry, poem lovers, but June tied with De-cember for third place, and October came in second. So why do you find this little introductory paragraph on the pages of our Knights Times article? The obvious reason would be because it is the current month for which this article is being written, but the reason is much more significant than that. May has traditionally been dedicated to Our Lady and of course, Our Blessed Mother is our Queen of the Knights, to whom we always offer our meeting’s closing prayer. But something even more exciting is hap-pening this year, and I consider this to be an extremely opportune event for all of us to participate in. Pope Francis has officially declared a feast day for celebrating the Vir-gin Mary as the “Mother of the Church”. “The decree stated that the feast day is intended to celebrate Mary not only as the mother of Jesus, but also as a fundamental figure in the Church.” Now here is the exciting news: the feast day has been declared to be celebrated on the Monday following Pentecost Sunday. Ladies & Knights: This is the day of our May Procession, May 21st!!!! Please come and celebrate this wonderful new feast day. The graces will be magnificent. We have invited all the Knights, and as always, the Color Guard in their last appearance for our May Procession in their current regalia. In other news: If you missed our meeting in April and the Knights’ presentation of awards on Wednesday, April 18th, I am happy and extremely excited to tell you that Mary Castorina was named the Ladies Auxiliary Lady of the Year. Mary has been a wonderful mentor for me and, even more, a Lady for all of us to emulate. Her perseverance, her joyful attitude, her loyalty and faithfulness to our purpose has been and continues to be a witness of who we endeavor to be as Ladies of this auxiliary. Thank you, Mary, for who you are and all you do. We will be voting for Corresponding Secretary and Recording Secretary at our general meeting on May 21st. We had a most successful Ladies Luncheon and Bingo on April 18th. A report on our proceeds will be given at our May meeting. We thank all those who multi-tasked and took so much of their time and energy to make this a flawless and happy event. Jane Bartolomeo and Mary Cas-torina worked in sync with all those chairwomen and volunteers and Knights who performed their functions with professionalism and cheer. Thank you, Ladies and Knights! Our June installation luncheon will be held at Cottage Café on June 4th. For more information, please attend our May meeting or call Rita Saler-no at 410-250-0894. Have a happy and blessed Mother’s Day! Love & Blessings, Dee

Our fraternal year 2017-2018 is nearly at an end. We have had many successes and brought new members all the way from the First to the Fourth Degree. This was a great accom-plishment on the part of the Council. However, we cannot rest because we need to continue building the Council. This summer while you are relaxing at the beach or at the pool or having fun with friends and family always keep in mind that you are a Knight and you are expected to help us build our Council. BINGO at 9053 SK Tom Anderson, Director

Brothers All, good day! Are you proud to be a part of our Catholic Men’s organization with all of our charita-ble contributions and successes? Well, let me tell you how BINGO helps us. Year after year, BINGO is the largest revenue generator we have. Charitable Contributions exceeded $20,000 this past year—just from BINGO. Our Council could not do what we do without BINGO. You are probably wondering how you can help. We or-ganize BINGO services into 4 teams and each team works one Friday night every four weeks. For two hours, from 5:15pm until 7:00, we need 8 guys. Then, we need three guys to stay until 10:00pm. ONE NIGHT out of each 4-WEEK period. Call today. Please call me, Tom A., at 410-641-5752, for answers to your questions and to join one of our four teams.
