Tom Hall - Commodore

September is Coming! September is Coming!

Before I get into my article, I’d like to send my best wishes to Staff Commodore Sparky Mundo and long time member & friend Alan Gornick. Both have been under the weather and I know they would love to hear from you. Get well soon Gentlemen!

The August weather brought us lots of opportunities to enjoy the Marina, the Bay, and Catalina. There have been extraordinary numbers of people on the water. It sometimes looks like the 405 on a

Friday afternoon. There was even a recent kayak vs sailboat collision right in front of PMYC. Everyone was fine, but we all have to be uber aware of our surroundings!

Because of that, Pacific Mariners Yacht Club is planning a Safety Course aimed at our friends on kayaks, rowboats, dragon boats, and Stand Up Paddleboards. There will be some great info for those of us with boats as well. Keep an eye out for details.

The Guest Dock has been busy and the Clubhouse has been getting lots of use. We are having lots of Friday Night Dinners, but we can always use more Chefs. It might be time for you to Cook! Give Rear Commodore Glen Solomon a call or there is a sign up sheet on the Galley door.

As you know, PMYC is hosting Stand Up Paddleboard Regatta & Sunday Brunch every other Sunday. They have been a great success. The next Regatta will be held Sunday September 16th. As always there will be Brunch & Drink Specials following the race. Come out and support the Regatta & Brunch by bringing family and friends!

Our Luau Cruise was a huge hit! In conjunction with Shoreline Yacht Club, and attended by members of SMWYC & DRYC as well, Fleet Captain Alan Rock has set new standards for super fun multi-yacht club events! Special thanks to Melissa Barbur for making this cruise & the Women on Water Party possible!

As you read this, there is a Big Party filled Labor Day Weekend at PMYC going on. Live Music & Lots of Fun & Food. Hope you didn’t miss it.

Gear up for a Chili Cook Off on the 15th of September, the start of Monday Night Football Dinners, and the Hors d’oeuvres Cruise to Emerald Bay September 28 – 30th.

September is the time to really Rock the PMYC Clubhouse!

Larry Koch - Vice Commodore

August began with a better than expected turnout to CAT Harbor for our Luau cruise out to Ballast Point. We shared the facilities with the Shoreline Yacht Club from Long Beach. They also turned out in great numbers. All together, we had about 130 partiers who ate, drank, danced, did the limbo, raced dinghies and had a great time. The dinghy race rules were simple. NO outboards and only one oar were allowed. The racers started out in the lagoon behind ballast point and every shape and type of sail imaginable went up to propel our fear-some racers. The finish line was somewhere near the dinghy dock. Our lone participant, Leslie Bond didn't get that memo and finished some-where near the beach at the Isthmus. She didn't finish first but she sure

went the farthest. The nice folks from Shoreline barbequed 70 pounds of tri tip and 16 chickens. Thanks to Fleet Captain Alan Rock and his "right hand girl" Melissa. Wonderful job!

After we returned from the Isthmus, we extended our stay with friends from the desert, we arrived back at PMYC to attend the FND fundraiser for the Church Mouse Marlin Tournament. Mike Elia and crew cooked another fabulous meal and the club made a nice donation to Bob and Carol Butte's favorite charity. Thanks again to Bob and Carol for all you do for the kids programs at Catalina.

On August 11th a few of us attended a party at ex members Don and Francine Warren. The theme was pirates and everyone showed up in full costume. What a fun time we all had. On August 17th, new member Deanna Onisko cooked her first Friday Night Dinner. There was a real nice turnout and she got through it just fine. For all you nostalgia fans, a group of us attended the Neil Diamond 40th anniversary concert of Hot August Nights at the Greek. He still has it and we highly recommend going, if you're a fan. The next Friday night, Khan and his mom cooked for the club. Khan showed up just in time to do all the dishes and clean up the galley. Seems he got an invite to crew on a go fast boat to Avalon and back, and he just couldn't resist. I think I would have done the same! Thanks to Khan's mom. On Sunday the 26th, we hosted the Women on the Water race after party. As usual, there was a great turn-

out who all ate, drank, listened to the band and did what all racers do....resolved the protests of a few with a nice trophy ceremony. Thanks to Alan, Melissa, Curt, Roxann, Candy, Mike, Kenny, Pat, Darlene, David, Frank, Irene, Elizabeth, Bill, Bethany, Katherine and everyone else who helped make our club the place these racers want to be.

We all extend our best wishes to Sparky Mundo and Alan Gornick for their continued and speedy recovery. PMYC is here for all of its members and we need everyone to help make it bigger and better. Darlene and I look forward to seeing everyone at the club.

Alan Rock - Fleet Captain

Greetings from your Fleet Captain: What a great time the club had on the recent Luau cruise with Shoreline Yacht Cub to Cat Harbor. The party was so good, and famous, that I got calls the following week from Fleet Captains at other clubs asking how we pulled it off. The secret is partying

with the right club and Shoreline is the right club for us. With Mike Donovan’s permission, Shore-line would like to party on next year with PMYC. If you missed the cruise, then mark it down for next year! The up-coming Hors d’oeuvres cruise is the last cruise of the year September 28-30th and you don’t want to miss it. This year I am adding a Friday night dinner sponsored by the club. It’s celebrating the Dodgers run for the playoffs with Dodger night. We will serve Dodger Dogs and Dodger peanuts along with a Dodger blanket giveaway. Make sure to wear your Dodger hats and team jersey. This cruise is considered by many to be our best cruise of the year, so PLEASE mark your calendars. Saturday will be the Hors d’oeuvres contest and we will feature the Bloody Mary breakfast on Sunday. WOW and I do mean WOW, or should I say Women On Water and the two day annual race. PMYC hosted the after party on Sunday. It was a fun party with over 120 in attendance with great food and Good Cop-Bad Cop provided the entertainment. The party was so good that at 7pm, the official ending, I had several people come up to me and ask to keep the band there and party on. These women know how to race and party! I have the Deputy Fleet Captain (Melissa) to thank for keeping me on time and on schedule for another month of cruises, races and parties. Our club is more than a club house so get out on the water while summer is still here. See you on the Bay, Your Fleet Captain

2012 Holiday Boat Parade Entry

To continue our PMYC Streak of Award Winning Holiday Boat Parade entries, Our Club is seeking new Committee Leadership this year! Our streak that started with Pamela Johnson’s leadership, continued on over the recent years with Michael “MD3” Donovan III and then also with Curt & Roxann Bersche.

MD3’s daughter is expected to join the world that same weekend in December and Curt & Roxann are maxed out with PMYC responsibilities. Planning needs to start ASAP to come up with a winning idea or theme for this year’s 50th Annual Holiday Boat Parade which is called “Celebrating 50 years… A Solid Gold Christmas!” Cheers!

Aloha! PMYC”s first ever co-cruise has proven to be a great success! We had over 100 members between our club and Shoreline Yacht Club. A big thank you to all that helped get us and the supplies over to the island and into Ballast Point as well as decorating and clean-up! This is a huge undertaking and many hands make light work. The help was much appreciated! The fun started Friday evening with the Appetizer & Meet-n-Greet. There were three tables full of delightful dishes, a Mai Tai drink special provided by Shoreline and plenty of conversation. The fun continued on Saturday starting with the dinghy race, competing for first place to the shore-line using no motors or oars. The inventions to

capture the wind by participants were very creative. The fun continued on to the Big Luau Dinner with Hawaiian music, followed by a whack the piñata game and a conga line that broke out into the limbo lower contest! Both were fierce competitions! A fun time was had by all and we hope to see everyone there next year! Melissa (Melika) Barbur

2012 CHURCH MOUSE MARLIN INVITATIONAL Thanks to the support of everyone: Pacific Mariners Yacht Club, Candy Blumenthal and Helene Smith. L O YA L S U P P O R T E R S ! ! The 22nd annual Church Mouse tournament netted, to date, a

whopping $56,000 in revenue for many needy charities on Catalina Island. The bene"fish"iaries of this successful tournament will be announced when the dust clears. There were 69 boats that fished their hearts out over this past Monday & Tuesday. The event concluded with a gala event held in the iconic casino ballroom Tuesday evening. There were three marlin caught and released. 1st place was taken by "Carabella ll with Captain Dave Schaffer, 2nd place was taken by "Dialed Inn" with Captain Randy Penington. 3rd. place was taken by "No Problem" with Captain Gary Derousse. 4th places went to "One Sea Dog" with Captain Victor Katrou with the largest halibut weighing in at 27.2 lbs. 5th place was taken by "Bad Attitude" with Captain Ron Whitaker with the largest Yellowtail weighing in at 23lbs. The stage was covered in donated fishing rods, reels, coolers and so many other assorted prizes and giveaways to possibly mention in this article. There was something for everyone as our dona-tions this year far exceeded our expectations. Paige Creigh got to "pie" Harbor Master Brian Bray, which Jim Smith from "High Cotton" had purchased for a $750 donation this year. Brain Vanderderspek, on "Sabatical" won 3 Buttuter awards for being towed in multiple times by the Harbor Department and once by "Joe's rent a boat". Smiles, laughter and joy abounded as the casino once again came to life for the worthy occasion of raising money for our beloved Avalon charities. We want to gratefully thank all the anglers, the Avalon Harbor Department, The City of Avalon and the very many business, individuals, contributors, sponsors and volunteers that made this one of the best Church Mouse tournaments in history. Tech Tip Of The Month by Andersson Marine

New Fuels Require New Stabilizer Additives – Because ethanol can contain up to 25 times more water than pure gasoline, it can cause corrosion of internal engine parts and phase separate over the winter. Although most gasoline stabilizers will keep the fuel stable, they don’t provide protection from corrosion and phase separation that

can ruin boaters’ engines and their next boating season. Ultra low sulfur diesel and biodiesel, now blended into much of the nation’s diesel fuel, are less stable and contain more water than the former high sulfur diesel fuel. They are also breeding grounds for bacteria, corrosion and sludge that plug filters and corrode the fuel system. Old fashioned stabilizers will not help prevent corrosion, phase separation or bacteria. New multi-functional fuel additives are necessary to help prevent problems when fuel is stored over the winter. Make sure to check your water separating filters before each trip and change the filters (Racors) every 6 months.

ADMIRALTY WAY SETTLEMENT PROJECT

Construction work will start September 4th, but the first few days the contractor will be prepping the area so they will have some temporary lane closures moving around as they’re doing work at various locations . Then a 24 hour detour will be in place on Thursday or Friday of next week once they get everything else taken care of first. There will be 3 phases of traffic control over the approximate 10 week construction duration: Phase 1 - The South side of the road (near Marina City Club) will be closed and traffic will be

reduced to one lane in each direction on the North side of the road. This will be a 24 hour detour since we will be excavating the roadway and it will last approximately 4 weeks. West-bound traffic will not be able to make any left hand turns within the construction area, but a U-Turn will be prohibited at Palawan Way and Eastbound traffic can turn into driveways. Drive-way access will be maintained except when in conflict with construction. We will be coordinat-ing with Marina City Club on any closures, but they will always have one driveway accessible at all times.

Phase 2 – The North side of the road (near Oxford Basin) will be closed and traffic will be re-duced to one lane in each direction on the South side of the road. This will be a 24 hour detour since we will be excavating the roadway and it will last approximately 4 weeks. Westbound traffic will not be able to make any left hand turns within the construction area, but a U-Turn will be prohibited at Palawan Way and Eastbound traffic can turn into driveways. Driveway access will be maintained except when in conflict with construction. We will be coordinating with Marina City Club on any closures, but they will always have one driveway accessible at all times.

Phase 3 – The Contractor will be re-installing the median island so one lane in each direction will be closed, closest to the median, but only during working hours 8 am – 6:30 pm. This phase should last approximately 2 weeks. Outside of these hours, the traffic will open back up to the normal 2 lanes in each direction.
