CHAIRMAN REPORT-Continued from page 179

daily sessions of conditioning for both swimmers and divers. On November 9th, the team departed for Australia. :readyfor the vigorous competition ahead.

In the swimming and diving competition, the U. S. A.

girls won clean sweeps in the 100 meters butterfly ~trokeand the platform diving. Incidentally, they were alone inscoring TWO clean sweeps. Our team competition ran tothe last day of the Games and the girls wer~ doing their

very best to be among the leaders. The girls accomplishedtheir objective by finishing with 19 places in medal andscoring positions-three first-place gold medals, eight sec-ond-place silver medals, three third-place bronze medalsplus three fourth-places, one fifth and one sixth. Unofficialscoring revealed that our U. S. A. Olympic Women's Swim-ming and Diving Team more than doubled the points scored

by runnerup Australia.Needless to say, our team was brought to peak form

through the diligent efforts of swimming coach Stan Tink-

ham and diving coach Glenn McCormick.
