Parks & Gardensno visit to cornwall’s capital city is complete without spending time in one of the many parks and gardens scattered throughout the city. The living, breathing mini landscapes hold the secret to a past that stretches back over centuries. Steeped in history each one can offer a distinct insight into the city’s colourful heritage and for any horticultural enthusiasts they’re a must-see.

originally created in 1898 to commemorate Queen victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, victoria Gardens lays just behind the crown court nestled beside the kenwyn river, a stone’s throw away from the city centre. Amongst the striking trees, flowers and shrubs you’ll find a magnificent view of Truro’s viaduct. built by isambard kingdom brunel in 1859, this majestic structure was replaced in 1904 but still features five piers from its original construction. The gardens span a steep south-facing slope and in typical late 19th century style feature a pattern of trees and shrubs interlaced with paths and flowerbeds. A beautiful ornate fountain can be found nearby, which originally stood in boscawen Street but was relocated shortly after the gardens opened.

central to victoria Gardens is our bandstand, gifted by a former Truro city councillor. in the summertime you’ll find this peaceful spot transformed into a hub of live musical activity when it receives visits from local brass bands every Sunday. five years earlier, in 1893, Truro city council commissioned waterfall Gardens just off St George’s Road. There you’ll find the River Kenwyn flowing through mature specimen trees and well cared for lawns towards the leats in the centre of town. heading just outside the central hustle and bustle of Truro, green-fingered visitors are in for a treat with an array of rare and exotic plants hidden within bosvigo Gardens. complete with a 13th century Georgian house, victorian conservatory, topiary and woodland walk. Further afield, just to the north of Truro, is Daubez Moor. Gifted to the city by reverend ennis in 1977, this large 18 acre site has acted as a nature reserve to improve habitats for all kinds of wildlife. funds from the Green link corridor Project in the early 2000s provided money to invest in bat boxes, bird boxes, log piles and brush piles.

Truro through time!

t he first settlers in what is now Truro were most likely a celtic tribe that settled around what is now Pydar Street.

it wasn’t until the norman era, when a castle was built that the settlement became a town. The castle attracted further residents and gave rise to a thriving market, however there would only have been a couple of hundred people living here at this time. by the 14th century Truro had become a Stannary Town; which put it at the heart of the growing cornish mining industry. Tin would have been ‘assayed’, meaning it was weighed, measured and

Quite how the city derived its name is the subject of much debate. Many scholars believe it comes from the cornish tri-veru meaning three rivers. in total there could have been 50 different names since the first recorded name of Trurow in 1157. Other possible origins are Tri-riw meaning Three kings and Tri-re-uru meaning ‘homestead on the river uru’

stamped right here in Truro. The town’s biggest product throughout this period was wool and it would have been home to several woollen mills. Truro became more prosperous in the 16th century and developments around this time included the grammar school. in the 18th century local merchant and developer william lemon built many of the houses on lemon Street. This is widely regarded as the best example of Georgian architecture west of bath. The population of Truro grew rapidly over the next 200 years thanks to the price of tin and it became affectionately known as the london of cornwall. The

3 assembly rooms on high cross were built to hold society balls and card games and a theatre was also built at this time. by now Truro was considered an average sized town and in 1877 Queen victoria gave it city status with it’s own bishop, edward benson, who decided that Truro needed its own cathedral, which was built at high cross. Gaslight came to Truro in 1822 and its biggest import at the time was coal that was used to provide the gas to light the city. in the mid 19th century Truro was overcrowded and became ravaged by cholera. The population stagnated and by 1951 had only grown to 13,000. The city’s port centred around lemon Quay, which until 1922 was still a working quay when it was filled in to become a car park. The current concentric circles on lemon Quay are a reminder of its long-standing maritime role. These days Truro is a bustling city, cornwall’s commercial hub and a wonderful place for a short, or even a long break.

An history still alive...The royal cornwall Museum on river Street is a must stop for any visitor to Truro. housed in the former Truro Savings bank building since 1912, the museum keeps history very much alive. over the years generous benefactors have donated an amazing array of objects, broadening the collection so that it covers for example egyptology (hence our famous unwrapped mummy), fine art and world cultures, as well as classical Greek and roman objects. The rashleigh Gallery contains a world-famous collection of minerals, the core of which was amassed by Philip rashleigh of Menabilly at the end of the 18th century. it includes the largest specimen of liroconite ever found, and a large gold nugget found at Perranarworthal. The Museum’s decorative arts collection and old master drawings are also very strong, the latter chiefly due to alfred de Pass, another generous benefactor.

each year a quarter of a million German visitors flock to Cornwall, lured by the films based on books by cornish author rosamund Pilcher. More than 70 titles have been filmed in the South west, the latest ‘indian bride’, being entirely set in Truro, including city hall and Truro college. The city also rose to fame in the 1970’s when it featured in the cornish based bbc series, Poldark. The Tv drama became synonymous with cornwall, in particular Truro, and was based on a set of twelve historical novels written by one of the most prolific authors of the twentieth century, winston Graham.

although Graham penned many successful bodies of work, Poldark was undoubtedly his most well known. The story followed war hero captain ross Poldark as he returned from the american war of independence to an 18th century cornwall oppressed by wealthy aristocrats and land-owners. as the narrative develops, the novels, and Tv series, became less about the love triangle between Poldark, his cousin and the aristocratic elizabeth chynoweth, and more about the social situation in cornwall at the time. The original 1970 series succeeded in unmasking

Truro which was a regular jaunt made by ross Poldark and friends. iconic cornish locations such as Porthcurno beach near Penzance, and Saint enodoc church on the north coast also made an appearance. The spectacular

landscapes, buildings and the rugged coastline of cornwall become as much a part of the appeal as anything else, resulting in a tourism boom still felt today. Just six miles south east of Truro, St Michael Penkivel church, near Tregothnan estate was the location of choice to see two characters get hitched in richard curtis’ 2013 romantic comedy ‘about Time’. located in a small village near Truro, the 13th century church has been long renowned for its beauty. five years earlier, it made its first appearance on the silver screen having starred in ‘keeping Mum’, a vivacious comedy hit starring rowan atkinson and cornish born kristin Scott Thomas. Today there is no better place to explore Graham’s world of Poldark, the German-based tales of roasamund Pilcher and many other Tv tales than from the true

Miracle Theatre present THE MAGNIFICENT THREE23 Aug - 29 Aug , 7.30PMTrelissick, Feock, Nr Truro

cornwall’s’ Miracle Theatre takes a long-awaited visit to the wild west with this brand new spaghetti western for lovers of open-air theatre. accompanied by the strains of country music, The Magnificent Three is a comical look at gender politics and anarchy, set among endless prairies, swinging bar doors and smoking guns - with not a horse in sight… Miracle’s outdoor productions have become a ‘must do’ summer activity suitable for anyone and everyone. The joy of open-air performance is that every night is different and it really is an etiquette-free zone: “you can sit where you want, eat what you want, wear whatever you like” says Miracle’s artistic Director bill Scott, “ Plus the setting is transformed as night falls; the actors can never be sure what to expect and must be ready to respond to a dramatic moonrise, a sudden shower or a wild animal trying to get in on the act. for players and audience this is a genuinely unique and shared experience.” www.miracletheatre.co.uk

the information detailed in this guide is supplied to the Council by the proprietors of the establishments listed. although inspections have been made of the accommodation, Truro city council cannot accept any liability for the accuracy of the information which has been supplied.

it is naturally hoped that persons using the accommodation and services in this guide will find that it meets their requirements and is of a high standard.

Large hotels have a minimum of 6 bedrooms, but are more likely to have over 20. small hotels have a maximum of 20 bedrooms and usually personally run. Country house hotels have large grounds and are in rural areas with the emphasis on peace and quiet.

guest Accommodation includes b&bs, Guest houses, farmhouses and inns. They range from one room b&bs to larger establishments who may offer dinner and could also be licensed. Guest accommodation tends to be personally run by the owners.

AA star ratings (from 1 to 5) are awarded for the standard of quality for hotels and guest accommodation. in addition to the star rating, the aa gives a merit score as a percentage, which enables the visitor to compare the establishments with the same number of stars.

Campsites & Caravan Parksare rated from 1 to 5 Pennants dependent on the range and quality of facilities provided. The aa Pennant rating is only based on the touring pitches and facilities at campsites and caravan parks, and do not cover static caravans or chalets.

gold and silver awards are given to hotels and guest accommodation that provide exceptional quality in all

areas, in particular in service and hospitality.

self Catering establishments are assessed using the following criteria. 1 Microwave provided2 all beds full size 3 bed linen available 4 linen & towels provided, access to freezer and washing machine 5 high standards of quality

Holiday, touring & Camping Parks and holiday villages are assessed on the standards they provide to visitors in the following areas:cleanliness, facilities, groundsmanship, pitches, play areas and leisure facilities (where provided).

the visit truro scheme will ensure that tourism accommodation providers meet minimum standards based on the visitengland entry level scheme to make sure that all premises are legal, safe, clean and green. in addition the assessors will be checking that their online presence is a full and fair reflection of the offering as the majority of visitors use the internet to research their holiday options, together with a complaints resolution process.

the local scheme is not an assessment of quality and is definitely not intended to replace the current star ratings. it is complimentary to nQaS, and it is hoped that the scheme may encourage those who currently operate with no external inspection at all, to prove that they meet the minimum standards of legislation, fire risk assessments, accessibility, cleanliness etc.
