What warmer, more tender and safer cradle for human life than the intense, deep and blessed love of a man and a woman? The language of tenderness of the bodies, separate but leaning towards each other, the listening to each other that relieves solitude, the desire to face life together, as allies, make the human couple able to generate, overcoming the confines of the happy complicity of two to prepare them to welcome new life, new love and new hope... to model themselves on the Creator in all ways. There’s no life without welcome, dedication, care and listening; there’s no life without tenderness, a loving gaze and words of reassurance; lastly, there’s no life without the joyful withdrawal of the self to make room for the other, so that they feel out happiness at their being. How reassuring is that attention of a mother and a father for their children, how much life a hug, a benevolent look, convinced encouragement or dispassionate appreciation can give. And so that no-one feels excluded, let’s remember that this is ageless, it generates life beyond our expectations, even where the earliest years were compromised by negligence, superficiality and desertion. The many families who live the experience of fostering and/or adoption with great openness and generosity bear witness to this - giving life is firstly or mainly a physical matter but an experience which requires you to give yourself completely in the relationship, firstly as a couple, then with children and them with all the children we’re asked to welcome. It’s from this that the original human nature of our being stems, made of the ability to meet, accept and welcome, reciprocal love, gratitude and forgiveness right to the end... as Jesus Christ showed us himself. So, through our families, nothing will be lost and the love of God will have another good chance of making its mark and living in the world. *Heads of the Service for the Family of the Diocese of Milan THE VOLUNTEERS AND THE MEETING. The preparation of thevolunteers who will give theirservice at the World Meetingof Families in Milan, iscontinuing. At the weekend of4 and 5 February, there was atraining course for the 150team leaders’, the co-ordinators of the teams wherethe volunteers will work inthe many services plannedduring the events. There’sobviously a lot of preparationon the technical aspects butthe reason for this service isnever lost to view.Angelo Scola, Archbishop ofMilan, spoke about the reasonwhen he personally met the150 team leaders, offering awide-ranging reflection. “Ahuman motivation is certainlyrequired for this freecommitment, but if we staywith a purely technical typeof logic and don’t recover the

idea of Christ, for whom weare doing it, we’ll never getto the heart of the matter. You need to be aware thatthe Lord is the basis ofeverything and make theothers take part in it, even inthe organisational andvoluntary work.” The Cardinalreflected, saying there wasthe chance of really bearingwitness to belief at stake, always asking yourself, however, – and this wasanother aspect that theArchbishop stressed strongly, why these meetings arepromoted, “Because you, we,believe in the family,” was hisimmediate answer. “In theface of so much confusion anduncertainty, it has never beenso important to turn to things

as they are, calling them withtheir names. For us, the familyis the union between a manand a woman, stable, faithfuland open to life. There arecertainly difficulties inunderstanding the real natureof the family, mainly arisingfrom the fragmentary way inwhich we are immersed indaily life, particularly in thecurrent society, but the themeof Family 2012 helps us torediscover a unity.” Thefamily, referring to the worldof affection, work andcelebration are the experienceof every man and woman atall latitudes, “Consistently andharmonically reuniting thesethree elements, felt today tobe separate, is a greatopportunity.”

Rome, Cologne, Sydney, Caravag-gio and Loreto - in the midst ofthe Jubilee, World Youth Day andEucharistic Congress, FrancescaBarisani has never missed an op-portunity to serve the Churchsince she came of age, “Because Ilike doing things, having responsi-bility and feeling that I’m takingpart in building something impor-tant.” In 12 years of experience asa volunteer, Francesca has done abit of everything - from organisingthe flow of pilgrims to managing

the entrance of coaches to carparks. She offered to be a teamleader at the VII World Meeting ofFamilies , «I’ll lead a group of 20-25 volunteers. Will I feel theweight of being a reference point?I don’t think so. Responsibilitydoesn’t frighten me.” Francescawill come to the VII World Meetingfrom Brescia, where she lives, inMay with about 10 friends who arealso volunteers. “We’re a close-knit group, usually bigger - up to40 people, but many people can’t

take holiday in May and June andso will only come to the Mass withthe Pope.” Francesca has felt thejoy of the meeting, participationand following the call to serviceamong friends and pilgrims. “TheWorld Youth Day and the Eucharis-tic Congress were experiencesthat touched my heart. Students, workers or pensioners - I would re-ally recommend that everyonecomes to be a volunteer.”There are less than 100 days tothe VII World Meeting and

Francesca has already taken partin the first date for Team leaders;she’ll go to Triuggio again in Marchand April for the last two week-ends of training on the pro-gramme.In the meantime, she’s not twid-dling her thumbs, “As every year,I’ll be organising the Palm vigilfor the Diocese of Brescia to keepmyself in training in managingcomplex situations. This willbring together thousands ofyoung people to the city.” Afterthis, Francesca has already takeninto consideration that all herthoughts and preparation will bein the direction of the VII WorldMeeting.

Their story, like that of many mi-grant families today, tells the journey ofa family and being a family (Cat. 3, Thefamily living the test). Elisabetta and Valerio, faces from Thefamily is the life of society (Catechesis4) are 38 and 36 and live with their 3children in the Villaggio Barona, Milan, with many difficult situations and thevolunteers who are concerned withthese. Catechesis 5, Work and celebration inthe family has the voice of Leo and thebattle he’s been leading for more than1000 days - days of stronghold after thecompany which had employed him for30 years closed suddenly, leaving he andhis wife out of work.Go to www.family2012.com, ‘Materials’section to see the video-catechesis.

An exemplary story for each catech-esis, a face, a voice, an expression.

This is the awareness in listening to theinterview of Bruno Volpi and his wife En-rica, the voices in the first catechesis, and in seeing how their personal andparticular story tells the profound mean-ing of ‘The Secret of Nazareth’, withoutstating it.The ‘Lifestyles’ project was developedto accompany the 10 catechesis of theMeeting. There are 10 short films withthe stories of exceptionally normal fam-ilies talking about themselves, thus giv-ing listeners the opportunity to ap-proach the catechesis in another waybut, above all, make a comparison withtheir story, seeing themselves in it ortaking a step back or, quite simply, let-ting themselves be enriched by thecomparison with another person. Theseventh, Milanese, edition is a Meetingof families with families, and this video-catechesis operation goes precisely inthat direction.

‘The Italian family’ in images from the cinema100 years of the family in ItalyThe changes in the Italian family told

through the images that have madethe history of cinema in Italy. The exhi-bition ‘The Italian family’ is hosted byPalazzo Reale, Milan from 2 March to 3April, has been developed as a culturalevent in preparation for the VII WorldMeeting of Families. It was conceived bythe Fondazione ente dello spettacolo(Entertainment Agency Foundation), inco-operation with the Experimental Cin-ematography Centre, National FilmArchive, and is promoted by the MilanCity Council and Palazzo Reale in co-op-eration with the Fondazione MilanoFamiglie 2012. The story of the Italian family is toldthrough more than 60 photographic im-ages seen through the most famousfilms of our time. The starting point isthe 1910s and the chronological journeygoes through to the current time, show-ing the transformations that have shak-en society and also overwhelmed thefamily. During the VII World Meeting ofFamilies, to be held in Milan, the fami-ly will be celebrated. Monsignor ErminioDe Scalzi, president of the FondazioneMilano Famiglie 2012, stressed, “Thefamily is the first cell of society withinwhich the first relationships are wovenand from which we go to discover theworld, where you experience a lovewhich enfolds like an unexpected gift. The family is not an abstract entity buta real, contemporary ‘place’ whicheveryone has to face because we allhave an experience of family. An expe-rience that touches, sometimes almostunconsciously, every sphere of life, in-cluding the artistic area, as happens inthe cinema, which has always recountedstories and emotions.” Monsignor DarioEdoardo Viganò, president of the Fon-dazione ente dello spettacolo, ex-plained, “The winning family ischanged. It’s not a play on words but ametamorphic and isomorphic kaleido-

scope of images dedicated by Italiancinema to the family and its unstop-pable evolution. Italian cinema has paidhomage to the family for what it is - adynamic, gestalt institution, in whichsocial changes, the ripples of Italian an-thropological tissue, the existentialwarp and relationship weave, are re-

flected to scale. The history of the cin-ema, family history, in short - History.‘The Italian Family’ is not a collectionof snapshots but a snapshot that col-lects the monographs of our life, thepersonal exhibitions of our life. Cinema-life, cinema-family.”6It starts from important documents ofthe Silent era and moves through tocontemporary cinema, forming a com-plete panorama, lingering in particularover the masterpieces which have madeItalian cinema internationally famous. The images show us, for example, thedramatic betrayals portrayed in the filmversion of Assunta Spina (1915, GustavoSerena) and the 19th century matrix offamily drama in Piccolo Mondo Antico(1941, Mario Soldati). There is the mis-ery of the war years with childrenrobbed of innocence (Ladri di Biciclette,1948, by Vittorio De Sica) and thedream of redemption of the motherplayed by Anna Magnani in Bellissima(1951, by Luchino Visconti). There is anintense panorama accompanying us inthe awareness of a whole generationwith regard to a profoundly changingworld which breaks family ties (Il Fer-roviere, 1956, by Pietro Germi) throughto the 1960s comedy which, startingfrom Divorzio all’italiana (1961, Germi)comments on the family with an ironiclook, with its fake respectability and itstaboos. A complex overview, whichdoesn’t forget to place the accent onItalian history, on a past that is difficultto ignore (La Ciociara, 1960, by De Sicaand Le Quattro Giornate di Napoli,1962, by Nanni Loy), on those provoca-tive looks typical of 1970s cinema (Fat-ti di Gente Perbene, 1974, by MauroBolognini and Un borghese piccolo pic-colo, 1977, by Mario Monicelli). Wereach the heart of the institution of thefamily through the stills, from its con-stitution as a united, cohesive clan de-spite the dramas and misunderstandings(from La Famiglia, 1987, by Ettore Sco-la to Il Cuore Grande delle Ragazze,2011 by Pupi Avati), to its being invest-ed by the loss of values, as seems clearin the films of recent years (from LaBestia nel Cuore, 2005, by CristinaComencini to Anche Libero Va Bene,2006, by Kim Rossi Stuart).

The Gospel joyfully proclaims, “God soloved the world that he gave his only

begotten Son, that whosoever believethin him should not perish, but have ever-lasting life.” (John III, 14). The good newsspreads like shared joy, “Rejoice withme!” (Luke XV, 6). There is, in a mysteri-ous way, the offer of an ineffable pres-ence in the believer’s celebration, “Forwhere two or three are gathered togeth-er in my name, there am I in the midst ofthem,” (Matthew XVIII, 20).

Celebrating belief is one of the inalien-able aspects of the baptismal state. Weparticularly do it in the Liturgy and, toan eminent degree, in the Eucharist.

Another significant goal has beenreached by the Pontifical Council forthe Family in the last few days - thetranslation of the preparatorycatechesis into Catalan andSlovenian. There are now a total of 11translations of the text: French,English, German, Spanish,Portuguese, Polish, Rumanian,Hungarian, Arabic, Catalan,Slovenian. The translation intoRussian is being prepared. The topics of Milan have beenpresented on several occasionsrecently. Don Andrea Ciucci presented themduring the habitual work of theministry - to three groups ofAmerican bishops visiting ‘ad liminaapostolorum’, the internationalcommittee of the Christian marriageassociation Incontro, some familyassociations meeting in Rome for ajoint session of work, and to theinternational work group speciallyset up by ACLI.

joy and peace of the Holy Spirit accom-pany the disciple of Jesus Christ withthe victorious force of the Resurrection. Therefore, it’s not strange that receiv-ing the sacraments, as an extension ofliturgical celebrations, is among theprivileged occasions when families livecelebration.

THE SACRAMENTS: FAMILY CELEBRATIONS Baptism, confirmation, First Commun-ion and marriage are accompanied byspecial celebratory tones which are ex-tended with lively social events in Mex-ico. The public side of belief is partic-ularly felt in the form of conviviality. In addition, popular culture has inte-grated other relevant times of life, likechildren’s third birthdays and a girl’sfifteenth birthday, as indispensablepublic events that must be celebrated, and no social celebration can be con-ceived without a prior liturgical con-text.Belief is rooted in a deeply felt anthro-pological context, the source of cultur-al identity, in all the events. They pro-mote meeting and communion startingfrom the miracle of life received andthe opportunity to share it. However, beyond all this, celebrations of beliefare called on to become authentic ex-pressions of the believing conscience,i.e., a profession of faith. There is the latent danger that cele-

bration turns into a time of conflict, apagan ritual or a pretext for immoralacts in its uniquely human expression.Despite goodwill, the anxiety that goeswith the preparations can distancethem from their true purpose. On theother hand, celebrations of faith, withtheir evangelising nature, have given abase to the healthy family life of thosewho’ve been away for a long time, in-cluding the reconciliation of those whohad distanced themselves. Human fruitwill, however, only make sense if cele-brations remain aware of the main rea-son for their vivacity, i.e., the pres-ence of Jesus Christ in the midst of hisdisciples. Celebrations are a good plat-form for evangelisation and living be-lief, a testimony for a sad and sense-less world, in which men often meetwithout knowing why.

We like everything inthe same way.We love playing board games onSaturdays evenings, good films atthe cinema, bowling every nowand then and going to a sportscentre at the weekend where weswim and walk round the gar-dens. Every year we go on missionsduring Holy Week. It’s somethingwe all like and it enriches us ona friendship (we go with families

Onthe night of Christmas Eve, thewhole family together - grand-parents, aunts and uncles, nephews and nieces, meets tosing carols, rock Baby Jesus andpray, thanking God for His incar-nation, after Mass.
