The South Coast is powering over 848,000 homes from six windfarms. With the completion of Rampion Offshore Wind Farm, over 270,000 homes will be powered, bringing the number of homes powered by offshore wind to over one million.

The Solent has an existing reputation of being a leader in the field of composites with companies now demonstrating and applying this expertise to offshore wind, from MHI Vestas Offshore Wind producing 80m blades from their facility on the Isle of Wight to Seacat Services and South Boats manufacturing vessels for offshore wind farms in the UK and abroad.

The South Coast has recently experienced significant investment on the Isle of Wight following on from MHI Vestas Offshore Wind’s investment in a blade manufacturing facility. A recent economic impact assessment found that in 2016 MVOW’s contribution to the economy of the United Kingdom (direct & indirect) in terms of total output is in excess of £500 million. Our vision is of renewable energy playing a leading role in powering the UK. RenewableUK is the UK’s leading renewable energy trade association, specialising in onshore wind, offshore wind and wave & tidal energy. Acting as a central point of information and a united, representative voice for our membership, we conduct research; find solutions; organise events, facilitate business development, lobby and promote wind and marine renewables to government, industry, the media and the public.

Offshore Wind in the South Coast

Barnes Offshore Whitstable

Barnes Offshore is a family run business with over 60 years’ experience in commercial vessels and the fishing industry. The company carries out guard boat duties and survey work for offshore wind. Most recently, Barnes Offshore has won work on the Kentish Flats Extension Offshore Wind Farm and has previously completed work on London Array, Kentish Flats, Thanet and Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farms.

Seacat Services Cowes

Seacat Services is providing support vessels including crew transfer vessels for DONG’s Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm and Burbo Bank Extension, which have been built on the Isle of Wight.

Total Jobs Contracts Limited Sandwich

Total Jobs Contracts first started their work in offshore wind in 2013. The company provides general transition piece and substation maintenance, with 8 full time employees and 5 sub-contractors. The company has won contracts for their engineers to work on Thanet Offshore Wind Farm.

SeaRoc Group Chichester

SeaRoc Group has won a number of contracts for offshore wind farms across Europe utilising their SeaPlanner tool, a marine management and monitoring system. In 2016, SeaRoc were awarded a five year contract to provide Health, Safety and Quality management for the East Anglia One Offshore Wind Farm, a contract to support construction activity at Rampion Offshore Wind Farm and were selected to provide software and supporting services to DONG Energy’s Marine and Helicopter Coordination Centre. The group has also provided services for Nordsee One, Humber Gateway, Sandbank Offshore Wind Farm and the Kentish Flats Extension.

Vattenfall Kent

Since their commissioning, the Kentish Flats and Thanet Offshore Wind Farms have produced over 7 million megawatt hours of electricity since they were commissioned in 2005 and 2010, An operations and maintenance base in Ramsgate houses over 75 staff who will carry out operations and maintenance activity at the wind farms operated by Vattenfall in Kent. The Kentish Flats Extension Offshore Wind Farm, commissioned in 2015 offered Vattenfall the opportunity to use lessons learned and improve the design of the windfarm through innovations in the foundations used and the use of larger turbines across the windfarm. Both Whitstable and Ramsgate Harbours have benefited from over 10 years of wind farm activity as a result of Vattenfall’s wind farms.

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind Newport

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind (MVOW) is a 50/50 joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Vestas Wind Systems, established on 1st April 2014, focusing solely on offshore wind. MVOW is driving value in the UK as an offshore wind turbine generator (WTG) OEM. Growing rapidly, employees in the UK have quadrupled since MVOW’s inception, to more than 400 by August 2016. As a technology company MVOW is delivering innovation in the UK both in terms of our products and our operations. The V164-8.0 MW is the largest, most powerful, and most advanced turbine serially produced in the market, and MVOW are constantly innovating the way they do things to deliver on stringent safety and high quality standards, driving down the levelised cost of energy from offshore wind generation. Serial manufacturing of the 80 metre blade on the Isle of Wight facility for the V164 giant turbine directly employs approximately 250 staff and the facility has been operational since May 2015. Their Isle of Wight production facility and UK operations sites are supported by a growing group of competitive local suppliers; who themselves are also investing in people, facilities, equipment, and skills development.

Skills in the Solent Solent Local Enterprise Partnership and MHI Vestas Offshore Wind The Solent Local Enterprise Partnership wants to make sure that investment in skills is more closely aligned to private investment, and drives the outcomes that businesses need together with their workforces. The Solent Employer Ownership of Skills Programme was a competitive £1.5 million workforce development fund aimed at the Solent’s key sectors, such as Marine, Defence, Aerospace, Technology and Advanced Manufacturing. The main driver of the decision by MHI Vestas Offshore Wind (MVOW) to locate its blade manufacturing facility on the Isle of Wight was the availability of a quality workforce with composites knowledge and experience. Work started immediately in preparation for the recruitment of over 150 staff within 3 months, and on upskilling new and existing employees to ensure that MVOW staff’s skills are enhanced to meet the challenges of the commercial launch of the world’s largest wind turbine blade. Working with Solent LEP, MVOW delivered a high quality training programme that underpinned long-term investment at the Isle of Wight site. MVOW was able to maintain a flexible programme and enhance workforce skills by insourcing 9 NVQ assessor qualifications, whilst working with the Isle of Wight College for programme verification and to create a nationally recognised level 3 NVQ in composites. MVOW’s manufacturing skills development programme has been an unmitigated success for all parties; it has delivered significant outcomes for Solent LEP’s training and business investment priorities, and work with Isle of Wight College has supported their status as a leading composite centre of excellence and MVOW has nurtured a dedicated and hard-working workforce.

Project Spotlight Rampion Offshore Wind Farm E.ON’s 116 turbine wind farm is currently under construction expected to be commissioned in 2018. Following on from the project reaching consent in 2014, there have been a number contracts to support the UK supply chain including the selection of Newhaven Port as the base for operations and maintenance for Rampion. Lancashire based EDS Group is to carry out cable termination and jointing work at the wind farm. Tekmar (Newton Aycliffe) will be providing a cable protection system for the wind farm with JDR Cables providing a cable system including the design and manufacture of 142 kilometres of inter- array cables to the project.

This map demonstrates the spread of UK companies involved in offshore wind in the South Coast representing the employment and wider economic benefit from companies doing business in offshore wind. N.B. The case studies included are intended to provide a representation of the types of projects and companies active across the offshore wind supply chain.
