“Applicationsareexpectedfordozensofproposedoffshorewindprojects,manyoffthenorthandcentralAtlanticinthecomingmonths”

High renewable demands are driving offshore farms as part of the rise of wind energy across North America

The facts are there for all to see. The wind energy industry seeks a national 25% renewable electricity standard by the year 2025 in the US. CanWEA argues that Canada must ensure that wind energy supplies 20 per cent of the country’s demand by 2025, bringing total Canadian wind energy capacity to 55 GW.

Land based wind turbines are prevalent in the American state of Texas and reaching up through Mid-West, but a strong wind resource has been identified in a region that previously held too many challenges to develop. With Trillium Power now moving from planning to initial construction in The Great Lakes and with the Cape Wind farm rapidly reaching operational status on the Eastern Seaboard both coastal and inland waters are finally reaching their true potential. It’s clear now that these offshore areas are becoming prime candidates to deliver on the huge wind energy investments laid out in President Obama’s stimulus package.

Why build offshore? Isn’t there enough land in Canada and the USA?

It’s not about just land being available for construction. As we all know, the formula for a successful renewable energy power plant relies on a large wealth of criteria being met. A strong, reliable wind resource is vital to take advantage of the economies of scale that a utility sized, multi-megawatt turbine is capable of. Offshore winds are long proven to provide just that.

And it’s not only wind resource that is appealing to developers; grid connection has been and continues to be a problem both on and offshore. The additional costs associated with transmission of the generated renewable energy can turn a potentially profitable site into a white elephant. The smartest investors and developers know to locate their wind farms in areas with great grid connection, which are usually close to major cities. Just check the Eastern Seaboard, Pacific Rim and Great Lakes for prime examples!

This summit will explore how the Atlantic and Pacific coastal regions and the Great Lakes have many if not all the required factors necessary to succeed. It will tackle not only the positives of taking the turbines offshore out of site, and removing the chance of noise complaints from nearby residents but also explore the performance optimization, O&M, environmental, supply chain and legal aspects to ensure that your project is a success from the start.

Choosing the right offshore location:Get insight on the latest research from Toronto Hydro Corporation on where their studies show to be the best offshore wind farm locations in the Great Lakes and why. Also hear from forecasting specialists AWS Truewind on the latest marine models and techniques that give the most accurate assessment of offshore wind

In short, from addressing legislation to delivering better forecast analysis this event has offshore wind covered. With close partnership from the Great Lakes Wind Collaborative and expert speakers from the pioneering North American offshore wind installation, Trillium Power, this is the only summit dedicated to making offshore wind energy a successful reality in the USA and Canada. What separates Wind Energy Update conferences from other events is the time we dedicate to networking to allow you to build the great personal relationships with key strategic partners you need for long term business success. Whether you need to get guidance on how to begin your application process, meet environmental and legislative criteria or find specialist business contacts, there is no better place than this summit.

Is this you?

Wind farm developersEnsure that you get the information you need to increase the success of your permits being approved, and get your wind farm under construction and operational is the most efficient manner.

Service providers to offshore based energy industriesWith money pouring into the offshore wind industry, don’t miss out by taking a back seat. Raising the finance for projects and getting approval requires contracts to be in place between developers and service providers to the wind farms. Act now to identify how your business fits into the chain you can fill your order books with lucrative contracts now!

Learn from experts and pioneers from right across the North American offshore wind industry:

The Offshore Wind Energy in North America and the Great Lakes Summit is delivered by key professionals with in depth industry knowledge. They’ll guide you through the all the crucial areas you need to be on top of in order to guarantee the most successful power plant applications and construction projects. In short, you’ll get all the vital information to ensure that you can make the most out of the lucrative market coming online now.

Getting to grips with practical offshore wind development:Hear from Trillium Power’s President and CAO, the first company to begin construction of an offshore wind farm in North America, about the vital importance of working collaboratively and what needs to be done to advance the economic development of the offshore wind industry

Raising finance for offshore wind:Find out from RBC Capital and Dexia about the options available to you when it comes to securing finance for your wind farm including financing options on a non-recourse basis. Exclusively find out about the interest that investors see in offshore wind and how to access their funds

Building an unbreakable chain:Learn how to make each supply chain link stronger than the last from the extensive R&D work undertaken by Natural Resources Canada and understand the practicalities and timescales of bringing a skilled workforce to market and what needs to be done to get your turbines ready for installation

Addressing environmental concerns:Navigate your way through the minefield of potential environmental objections; learn how to minimize impacts on marine life, the migratory path of birds, fish spawning points and others and hear why the governing bodies for all these areas are actually keen to work with you and see offshore wind grow. Get crucial insight from Lake Erie’s Management Unit and ESS on how to comply with the various criteria to ensure smooth harmony throughout the application and installation processes.

Deepwater turbines: What’s possible? What’s profitable?Hear all about the latest developments in floating turbines designed to minimize pitch & roll to ensure optimal performance. The Blue H Group will stress the realities of the cost of deepwater installations and provide you with workable time frames for their deployment.
