Wheels, wings team up for eye-catching museum event

Greenwood Military Aviation Museum

The inaugural Wings and Wheels 2015 vintage aircraft and car show held at the Greenwood Military Avia-tion Museum September 12 was a resounding success. Seventy-two classic, antique and special interest vehicles

travelled from as far away as Yarmouth, Dartmouth and Bridgewater. These beau-tifully restored cars were parked under the museum aircraft in the air park, draw-ing hundreds of spectators.

Visitors also enjoyed guid-ed tours of the museum and were allowed inside three of the restored aircraft. They got a fi rst hand look at the on-going restorations by mu-

seum volunteers. The Flight Line Café served up a BBQ lunch in addition to its usual soups and sandwiches. There was even popcorn and cotton candy for the young (and the young at heart).

A heartfelt thank-you is ex-tended to all of the museum’s local business sponsors for

the thousands of dollars in prize giveaways and beauti-ful etched-glass trophies. Special thanks also to the Village of Kingston and the Municipality of Kings for their fi nancial support, and to the friends and volunteers of the museum who so freely gave of their time and effort

to make the show a great success.

Nutritional wellness pro-gramming offers adult-based

courses, campaigns and ad-ditional educational material to CAF personnel facilitated by experienced Health Promotion delivery personnel on bases and wings across Canada. Services offered depend on location, time of year and yearly STF focus.

Courses include Top Fuel for Top Performance. The Weight Wellness Lifestyle Pro-gram provides strategies for safe, effective and permanent weight control. It has been de-signed to guide participants to make concrete commitments to achieve and/ or maintain a

Firefi ghters from 14 Fire and Emergency Services, 14 Wing Greenwood, competed at the recent Scott Firefi t Maritime Regional Event, held July 25 and 26, in Amherst. Competi-tors included Sergeant George Townsend, Master Corporal Donnie Davis, Corporal Adam Arsenault, Corporal Vince de-Boer and Corporal Gabriel Hould. They joined a large fi eld of military firefighters from Gagetown and CFB Halifax, regional volunteer departments

and paid firefighting force members.

The team began training for this event in May, creat-ing a circuit of exercises and activities at the 14 FES fi re hall that would simulate the com-petition’s tasks and running members through it at least twice a week.

At the Firefi t challenge itself, competitors entered as indi-viduals, two-man and fi ve-man teams. The circuit included nine tasks, to be completed as fast as possible.

The individual race included a six-fl ight stair climb, carrying a four-foot bundle of four-inch

hose weighing 42 pounds; a 45-pound hose hoist to the top of the tower, competitors must then run down the tower touching every stair, then using a chopping simulator – a nine-pound mallet to move a beam – as a forcible entry test, a 140-foot run to shoulder a charged hose line, a 75-foot charged hose line drag and target shoot and a 175-pound victim rescue over a 100-foot drag.

All 14 FES members entered the individual race, except Townsend. Results were as fol-lows: Hould, 1:47.80 for 18th place; Arsenault, 1:53.45 for 25th place; deBoer: 2:05.2 for

32nd place; and Davis, 2:45.01 for 54th place.

In the fi ve-man relay event, all 14 FES members teamed up to go through the six-fl ight stair climb challenge, carrying 42 pounds of hose; passing off a flashlight to the next competitor to start the hose hoist, another exchange to speed-descend the tower, then the forced entry challenge, the 140-foot run around pylons, the charged hose task and, finally, the victim drag. The Greenwood team fi nished sixth overall, with a time of 1:28.56.

two-man relay through nine shared tasks: the fi rst competi-tor properly dons an air pack, ascends the tower, completes the hose hoist, a tower descent and the forcible entry simula-tion; they exchange the air pack cylinder, and the second team member runs the 140-foot hose route, then the 75-foot hose drag and target shoot and the victim drag. Greenwood results were posted as follows: Arsenault/ deBoer, 1:50.06 for 10th place; and Townsend/ Davis, 2:19.31 for second place (a sliver medal) in the over-40 category.

With the top-three individual

results from 14 FES competi-tors compiled, Greenwood placed sixth overall as a team at the event, in 5:46.27.

“We were very happy with our results, knowing that this was the fi rst time we all com-peted together,” Arsenault said. “And, this was the fi rst time Davis, deBoer and Hould have ever done this competition. The team shows great potential to be successful in national and world events, and we hope to get continued support next year and, possibly, be given the opportunity to compete in not only regional events but in nationals and worlds.”

Special Olympics bowling ready for season

If you are interested in join-ing this fun, dynamic group of athletes, show up at the Greenwood Bowling Centre

to register. Registration is $30 for the entire year. The cost of bowling two games and shoe rental (if required) on each bowling night is the responsibility of the athlete, parent or guardian. Welcome weekend14 Wing Greenwood welcomed familiar faces and newcomers to its annual Wing Welcome schedule of events September 10 through 13. With a range of family-friendly activities high-lighting base facilities and programs, Wing Welcome is a chance to meet new people, get registered for fun sports and hobby pro-grams and check out what life in Greenwood offers. A big thank you to all who supported the weekend: committee volunteers worked for several months planning, and executed a wonderful Wing Welcome for the community; support from local businesses and partner organizations was huge: thank you for your contributions; and thank you to the many volunteers that made the event possible, giving of their time and expertise. Organiz-ers hope everyone enjoyed Wing Welcome. Congratulations to the weekend’s grand prize winner of the LG Smart TV from TrueStyle, Scott Marshall.
