OFUESI: Keep InTouch (KIT) January-February 2016 www.ofuesiusa.org 1 From your servant for Jesus’ sake Precious Lord.. Precious faith I Peter 2:7, 1:7 Dear OFUESI Family, Precious Lord, Take my hand; lead me on, let me stand.. A wooden caption adorns our living room. Jesus is precious to you who believe, pens Peter in his first epistle, chapter 2 verse 7. In other translations, precious means priceless. How precious is Christ to us? Peter reminds us that Christ bought us with His precious blood (I 1:18). Know that you were not redeemed with corruptible things like silver and gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. Since the precious Lord redeemed us with His precious blood, our faith is also treated as precious by Peter as he writes: the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, may be found to praise, honor and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ (I 1:7). The world values gold priceless but Peter reminds it is corruptible and it perishes. Let us examine our value system. Is the Lord really precious? Do you recall Peter’s words to the lame man at the steps of the temple? Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. (Acts 3:6 KJV) Peter had life-changing substance to offer to one who expected alms: the Lord who is more precious than silver, more costly than gold, more beautiful than diamonds, incomparable Christ Himself. It is okay Peter that you don’t have silver or gold but you have the very best to offer: healing in the name of Christ to the lame man in need. Peter brings us the right perspective on gold: it may be considered a precious metal (many references in the OT, especially when it is offered to the Lord and His temple) but it is nothing compared to Jesus. And we come to Jesus, the chosen of God, precious (I Peter 2:4). And Jesus is that chief cornerstone laid in Zion, elect and precious (I Peter 2:6) and he that believes on Him shall not be confounded. And therefore to you who believe, He is precious (I Peter 2:7). How precious our faith is (II Peter 1:1) that is obtained through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ! The precious Lord also gives us great and precious promises (II Peter 1:4), reminds Peter. At least seven references in the two epistles of Peter, of the word “precious” makes a unique setting for us as an example of how we must value our Lord. The Psalmists rendered many things precious. How precious are your thoughts unto me O God! How great is the sum of them (Ps 139:7). Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints (Ps 116:15). The unity of our fellowship is like a precious ointment upon the head (Ps 133:2). Redemption of our souls is precious (Ps 49:8). One particular verse in the OT is worth our attention: I Sam 3:1 - And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision. And the last verse of that chapter will show the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD. When there was scarcity of God’s Word, God brought it to Samuel so as to feed Israel, see 4:1. Peter in his opening chapter of the first epistle reminds how we are born again: by the living and enduring Word of God (1:23), and that we are begotten unto a living hope by His resurrection (1:3) to an incorruptible inheritance. Do we feed on this living and enduring Word on a daily basis? That is the mark of a life changed by the touch of the Precious Lord. May we esteem our Lord so precious that we will strive after those things that are precious in His sight in our life of a long obedience in the same direction! May the OFUESI family in our life and actions, replicate the devotion of the woman who having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious broke the box, and poured it on the head of our Lord Jesus (Mk 14:3). You think about that! Yours in our Precious Lord, Subha Kumpaty Address for Correspondence: OFUESI-USA, 1921 Narrows Lane, Silver Spring, MD-20906 Financial Contributions: Treasurer OFUESI, 10570 Glen Drive, North Royalton, OH 44133

From your servant for Jesus’ sake … Precious Lord.. Precious faith I Peter 2:7, 1:7 Dear OFUESI Family, Precious Lord, Take my hand; lead me on, let me stand.. 16th ANNUAL NATIONAL COUNCIL MEETING AT HOUSTON, TX (DEC 5-6, 2015) Attendees: Ravi David – Georgia; Suresh Konatham – Texas; Subha Kumpaty – Wisconsin; Chandra and Anitha Manne – California; Paramjyothi Marati – Illinois; Raj Nathaniel – Louisiana; Joe Sudhakar Pedavada – Ohio; Amy and Prem Saganti – Texas; Nagaraju Valasagandla – Texas; Sushil Yesupriya – Maryland Over the phone: Joseph Nokku – Michigan; Abhijit Talari – Missouri; Cijju Sam – New Jersey NC member, Mrs. Amy Saganti hosted the meeting, ably supported by her husband and children. They had taken the excellent resources of the church they attend- Cy-Fair Christian Church, Houston, TX for our gathering and the fellowship started with lunch on Saturday. Each person in attendance, physically and over phone, was recognized and the meeting started with a word of prayer by Bro. Ravi David followed by a time of worship led by Bro. Sushil Yesupriya (Vice-President). Dr. Prem Saganti, who pioneered OFUESI work over the many years, exhorted us with the Word of God. He shared the thought that each of us should use the gifts to serve as faithful stewards of God’s grace and we should serve God, with the strength He provides for His praise and glory (I Peter 4:10-11). He discussed three specific thoughts on leadership from Dr. Michael Yousef’s book that we will have our encouragers, our doubters and our critics. But we must move forward graciously because we are serving the Lord who has called us. Business Session – 1 The President, Dr. Subha Kumpaty led the first business session with a report of God’s work amongst us this year, the conferences held, the ministry among various EGFs, the support to UESI along with input from EC members- Paramjyothi Marati (Secretary) on NC meetings, and Joe

Sudhakar (Treasurer) on the finances. EC and NC thanked the coordinators of various regions (for the annual conferences). A review of our newsletter KIT, its contents, and how it is put together were discussed. The NC also learnt the website updates and the need for a volunteer to be the liaison with the web host and the EC. Bro. Sushil closed with a word of prayer, thanking the Lord for His goodness and mercy to OFUESI and for the many blessings for all our conferences.

Business Session - 2: In the second business session, a review of outgoing NC members was taken up. The NC thanked them for their role in 2015. The outgoing NC members were Balakrishna Mulabagili, Veeraiah Bethala and Dr. Gunasingh Masilamani. Dr. Gunasingh served as joint (prayer) secretary in the EC in 2015 and was duly thanked for his services. He asked to be exempt from NC for 2016 and NC honored his request by approving his voluntary exemption. New NC nominations were entertained. A representative from Austin, TX area was proposed and both Suresh Konatham and Naga Valasagandla asked for some time in prayer before one of them could accept the nomination. Similarly, Chandra Manne who is currently from Los Angeles, CA proposed Samuel Victor from that area as he himself would be moving to Dallas, TX and continuing in the NC as Dallas representative. Upon elaborate discussion on NC membership, the focus shifted to EC membership. Subha proposed that Bro. Param Marati continue as Secretary for one year so the all EC positions can be considered for election at the same time next year. Abhijit reminded that that was the intent from last annual NC meeting also. No other nominations were received and Bro. Param was elected unanimously. With the Joint Secretary position vacant, both Dr. Ravi David and Dr. Raj Nathaniel were asked for their possible involvement in the EC. Both wanted

some time before they would be in the EC. Upon knowing the responsibilities as prayer secretary, Dr. Raj agreed to fill the role for this year. We were able to praise God for these serving on the NC and EC and asked for God’s wisdom moving forward. In terms of vision casting, Subha Kumpaty proposed going with the theme of outreach and sharing the gospel based on I Peter 2:9 and 3:16. Declaring His excellencies as His royal priesthood and being ready to answer everyone that asks us of the hope within us will be important goals for the next year among our interactions with the neighbors and students. NC wholly embraced this vision for us to move forward with. Noticing there are five fifth Saturdays in 2016, we discussed the possibilities of engaging all of us for UESI related themes: For example, we could use January 30 as Prayer and Planning Day for local EGFs; April 30 as UESI Prayer Day, July 30 as OFUESI Prayer Day, October 29 as Praise and Thanksgiving Day (Sharing from local EGFs) and December 31 as Personal Inventory Prayer Day. Bro. Raj Nathaniel will coordinate the prayer days (April 30 & July 30). We also discussed on EGF startup in Denver if we could plan for a Saturday (for example, April 30) and on the same day, startup of EGF in other potential locations could be taken up. For conferences next year, we learn that Uncle LT Jeyachandran will not be available and we felt people from different regions can address our groups in another region. We will be taking the matter in the NC meetings early next year. We would need to propose dates and coordinators for various regions as well. Bro. Subha indicated that website needs creativity and Joseph Nokku volunteered to look at the website. We will also look at how Friends of UESI Australia (fuesia.org) organized their website. Also, the EC shared various documents that were received from UESI in order to be prepared for the phone call discussion with Dr. Arul Manohar, Bro. Reji Daniel, Bro. Barnabas and Bro. Julius in the evening. The phone call with UESI leaders went well with an opportunity to find the needs of UESI at this time. On Sunday morning, we met in the home of Dr. Prem Saganti briefly and then went to their church for worship and communion. We learnt about taking time to smell the blessings the Lord has showered all around us instead of being busy about our hurried lives. When we returned, we had

another feast from the hosts, Sagantis who took care of us quite well. Bro. Ravi David reminded that like Moses in Exodus 33, we can pray and ask God three things: Show us your ways, Promise us your presence and Show us your glory. All the delegates departed to their respective homes Sunday afternoon. OFUESI is very glad that the Annual NC meeting went well, and appreciates the commitment and involvement of those who hosted, prayed, attended and participated as we once again beheld God's glory and faithfulness. (Recorded by Secretary Paramjyothi Marati)

IN THE NEWS UESI staff, Brothers Satish Simon and Sundersingh Babu attended Urbana conference in St. Louis. They are being hosted by Bro. Abhijit Talari post-Urbana and will arrive into Chicago on the 6th of January. They are hosted by Bro. Peter Palaparthi in Chicago and will visit with Chicago EGF families during their remaining time in the US. OFUESI is thankful to the hosts for their hospitality to our brothers. Please pray that the UESI staff will be refreshed during their time with our families. Pray for mercies during their stay and return journey. Bro. Satish was able to come earlier and minister at Bentonville Christmas outreach. Thanks to Bro. Joji Varghese for hosting and using Bro. Satish in ministering to Indians in Northwest Arkansas.

Bro. Joji reports: “We had a wonderful Christmas program here in Bentonville, AR, with about 250+ people attending of which more than 150 were non-Christian friends. For many of them this was the first time they heard the gospel. We had a few carols and regional language songs. Then Bro. Sathish did a great job in presenting the Gospel in a very simple and concise way, based on the parable of the Prodigal Son. We pray that God will work in the hearts of the people who heard His Word.” Praise God for His amazing work.

From your servant for Jesus’ sake … Know Who We Are Dear OFUESI Family, I Peter 2:1-10 is quite a classic describing our journey in Christ and our spiritual growth. 1. We are those who have tasted the Lord is gracious. Peter establishes the first things first. Before you enjoy intimacy with the precious Lord, you receive His gift of salvation. This is the tasting of the Gracious Lord. You immerse in His grace. You realize you are steeped in sin and His grace comes to rescue you. We live on His grace and we breathe in it. How blessed are we who believe! TASTING 2. With respect to the Word of God, we are like newborn babies. What is our attitude towards the Bible? We must grab the book like the newborn grabs the bottle. The Bible is compared to pure, unadulterated milk that is the whole sustenance of a newborn and we must have the aptitude of craving/ desiring it. Let us not approach the Bible with ‘I have read this before’ attitude or ‘I know it already’ predicament but with an attitude of a newborn- with focus and desire; and it will result in our spiritual growth. We grow up in salvation as Peter says here. DESIRING GOD’S WORD 3. We are those that come to Him as to a living stone who is chosen by God and precious. The passage describes a whole lot about Jesus as the foundation, the chief corner stone. But my thought here is that we have daily quiet time with the precious Lord. We are in intimate fellowship with Him. We habitually meet with Him and spend time with Him. This is proving that Christ in us is the hope of glory and that He permeates our thinking and living. COMING 4. We are as living stones being built up in a spiritual house. While the first three thoughts are on our personal relationship with the Lord, this is about being an active part and parcel of God’s family. First, you are a stone, not a brick. It means you are unique as all stones are different and in a building, stones are placed in such a manner that

they all fit well. Secondly, you are living, not dead. The Holy Spirit’s dynamic is evident in your life. And all of us are in God’s family, harmoniously sharing our responsibility in the church for everyone’s edification and SERVING His purposes. 5. We are a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. This is another way to describe that we are people of prayer. We are given direct access to the Father through Christ’s death as the curtain to the Most Holy Place tore into two. We are priests that are holy, set apart for Him. Why are we holy priesthood? So that we can offer spiritual sacrifices, petitions and supplications for ourselves, our fellow brothers and sisters, our neighbors, our nations and leaders.. Only in Christ we are accepted before the Father. Only in Christ we offer our petitions. PRAYING 6. We are a royal priesthood to proclaim the praises of Him. Verse 9 is so rich that we must pause at every title we are bestowed. We are a chosen generation. God the Father has chosen us unto salvation in Christ. We are a royal priesthood. This means we are the ambassadors of the King Jesus. We not only serve the King but we will reign with the King. We will see in a bit why we are the royal priesthood. We are a holy nation, set-apart people of God. We are His own special people, zealous for good works (Titus 2:14). With all these privileged titles, what do we do? We declare the praises of Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. We do the King’s bidding. We proclaim His praises to others. We talk about Christ and what He has done in our lives with our colleagues at work and in our neighborhood. We testify of His goodness to others. SHARING CHRIST What an incredible journey with the Precious Lord! May we live out the identity we have in Christ (v. 9)!

Yours in Our Lord, Subha Kumpaty

From your servant for Jesus’ sake … Challenge to a New Behavior Dear OFUESI Family, I Peter 2:11-25 provides practical implications of our belonging to God. Submission and humility are hallmarks of Christian faith which are woven in the chapter and in the whole book. 1. We are to live as aliens and strangers in this world. Aren‟t we resident aliens here, with our citizenship in heaven, traveling toward that heavenly city Hebrews 11 talks about? This life for us will have unanticipated twists but does have a secure destination. So we back up our talk with our walk. We strive to abstain from sinful desires not just for our own spiritual wholeness but to maintain an effective testimony among the community. How about godly life with a loving witness! 2. We are to submit to lawful authority as responsible citizens. God has ordained us to follow human government and by observing man-made laws (as long as those do not conflict with clear teaching of Scripture, see Acts 4), we, in fact, honor our God. Here we are dealing with Christian responsibility (not liberty). Peter summarizes Christian citizenship this way: Respect everyone, love brethren, fear God and honor the king. 3. We are to submit to and respect those over us, even those who are harsh, as Christian employees. When we suffer unjustly, God commends us for patiently bearing up under it because that shows our high standard of following Him and being aware of His presence in our lives. We are called to this purpose, suffering for doing good. And God is glorified through our patient endurance. 4. We are to follow in His steps. Christ is the perfect example of patient submission to unjust suffering. He has set us an example in the way He handled the arrest, trial and crucifixion. He also provided us salvation through His death, bearing our sins and freeing us from the penalty and power of sin. So we follow in His steps in suffering and righteous living. And He provides guidance and protection to those who are going away from Him

as the Shepherd and Overseer. So we commit ourselves to His care and presence. I remember as an EU student in Trichy and Warangal attending retreats with themes such as “Redeeming the time” (from Ephesians 5) and “In His steps” (I Peter 2). There was a great deal of theology with many practical implications. Aren‟t we called to follow Him all the way, walking obediently in His steps? You may have heard of a 19th century pastor Charles Sheldon‟s classic In His Steps in which a congregation is challenged to ask „What Would Jesus Do?‟ before embarking on anything in daily life for a year. You can follow several Christians wrestling with that question in their lives, living for the gospel and I quote a few words from the last Chapter: [Quote] If our definition of being a Christian is simply to enjoy the privileges of worship, be generous at no expense to ourselves, have a good, easy time surrounded by pleasant friends and by comfortable things, live respectably and at the same time avoid the world's great stress of sin and trouble because it is too much pain to bear it—if this is our definition of Christianity, surely we are a long way from following the steps of Him who trod the way with groans and tears and sobs of anguish for a lost humanity; who sweat, as it were, great drops of blood, who cried out on the cross, 'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?' "Are we ready to make and live a new discipleship? Are we ready to reconsider our definition of a Christian? What is it to be a Christian? It is to imitate Jesus. It is to do as He would do. It is to walk in His steps." [End Quote] May we follow and walk in His steps. Yours in Christ, Subha Kumpaty

From your servant for Jesus’ sake … Articulating the reason for the hope within Dear OFUESI Family, I Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you with meekness and fear. Very powerful words. A tall order. Always be ready. Always be prepared. The passage starts with who could harm if you are following good. Even if you suffer for righteousness sake, you are blessed. The Lord taught that in His Sermon on the mount. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile you, persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad for great is your reward in heaven. As the psalmist echoes, the LORD is my light and salvation; whom shall I fear? Peter quoted Isaiah 8:12. Do not be afraid of the threats of the conspirators or do not be troubled. But, Peter says, sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Worship Christ as the Lord of your life. Isaiah continued (8:13): The LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow; Let Him be your fear. And let Him be your dread. It is the same principle. The fear of man leads to shame. Don’t succumb to it. On the other hand, the fear of God leads us to a good conscience. Peter says when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conscience in Christ may be ashamed. Hallowing the LORD God, having reverential fear of Him, setting Christ apart in our hearts is fundamental to our Christian faith and practice. Then and only then we will always be ready. Only our set apart conduct will result in oral defense. We are hopeful people because of Christ in us the Hope of Glory. We will be purposeful in our lives and we will make it our one endeavor to love and serve Him ever.

Apologia does not mean we will say sorry but we will give an answer for our Christian faith and practice. Remember we won’t answer in arrogance, to people that ask the reason for our hope. We should and will answer with meekness and fear. We should do this in gentleness and respect. Fearing God rather than men is something Peter and John practiced and articulated when they were put in prison for preaching the gospel in the early days following the Lord’s resurrection. And Peter himself can testify how pathetic his own denying the Lord in the fear of people was, on the night Jesus was taken to be tried and crucified. So Peter is teaching us important truths that are born out of his own personal experiences and only those whose conscience is clear can respectfully testify without any fear in the onslaught of persecution. Our good behavior is always the best defense in against unjust treatment. How about the modeling by our Lord! His sinless life provoked the evil men’s unjust hatred. He did not fear men but trusted Himself to God. When He was reviled, He did not retaliate. I Peter 3:18 is another lovely parallel to John 3:16 and a great summary of the gospel. Memorize it, meditate it and use it in your apologia. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit. Our reconciliation (bringing us to God) is the divine purpose for Christ’s sacrificial death. The righteous Christ died in the place of the unrighteous ones (in our place), Remember He was made alive. Hail our resurrected Lord! Yours in Our Lord, Subha Kumpaty

From your servant for Jesus’ sake … Living for the will of God Dear OFUESI Family, I Peter, Chapter 4 presents three important principles. First, based on Christ’s example of suffering in the flesh, we should live the rest of our lives no longer for human passions but for the will of God. Secondly, based on God’s gracious bestowment, we should serve one another with the strength God supplies so that God is glorified in everything we do. Thirdly, if we suffer according to God’s will, we entrust ourselves to our faithful Creator while doing good. In all of these principles we are called to be in the center of God’s will. The coverage on Olympics has been a refreshing breeze in the midst of our not-so-encouraging national politics and world economics. The fastest man alive, Usain Bolt of Jamaica is one of many God raised for His glory, as he shares God blessed him with speed to spread the Gospel. As much as the media labels his prayer and thanksgiving to God as a moment for himself, this Olympic legend is outspoken about his faith. He provides us an example of living for God’s will in a compelling manner. These are the days our faith is marginalized with possibilities for suffering for being a witnessing Christian. We ought to be vigilant to stay in the center of God’s will for our lives. The summer time has been rich for OFUESI families with conferences in various regions featuring the ministry by veteran UESI staff, Bro. Lazarus and Sis. Manjula Bonthu with the theme verses, I Peter 2:9 and 3:15. The meetings in Los Angeles and San Jose owe our thanks to Bro. Emmanuel Emmady and Dr. Jayakumar Rajadas who graciously hosted the missionaries and organized the gatherings. The missionaries spent a good bit of time visiting families in Austin, Memphis, St. Louis during the week days while participating in the conferences in Dallas, Bentonville and Atlanta. On behalf of the Executive Committee, I personally extend thanks to all the hosts and conference coordinators. You have

served with the strength God has supplied and you have been instrumental in bringing glory to God. It is encouraging to learn 50-60 people attending each conference in the South, Mid-South and Southeast. We learn that the Lord has used our UESI Staff and resource persons quite well and we praise Him for their role in challenging us to live the rest of our lives for the will of God. Please find enclosed a few of the reports that have come in. There are two more conferences in the Midwest and Eastern regions during September after which the Lazarus couple will return to India. Kindly continue to pray for a good measure of health and journey mercies for the remainder of their time here. We trust that they are as much refreshed and blessed as our OFUESI families are. We are certainly grateful to the Lord for their counseling, mentoring and encouragement to us to be the conduits of God’s Gracious Gospel, while being relevant to our setting. Dr. Saganti reports that one out of every three international students study in California, Texas and New York (from Open Doors data). Should we be preparing to align our resources (people) to meet this new trend in our constant challenge to reach international students? Kindly keep this in your prayer and discuss among our local EGFs. Best wishes to all our families in the new academic year. May all of us be in the center of His will! Yours in Our Lord, Subha Kumpaty

BRIEF REPORT FROM LOS ANGELES, CA It was a blessing to have the UESI Staff from India for the Western Region Los Angeles 2016 Conference. We had a small group of fifteen that joined to hear Bro. Lazarus and Sis. Manjula share from the Word and the ministry of UESI. Many EGF graduates and friends could not join due to other ministry conflicts. It was refreshing and nostalgic to hear Lazarus Anna take a bible study similar to our believers’ bible studies back home. Anna challenged the group to reach out to international students in US in addition to supporting UESI. A few of the graduates reached out after the meeting and expressed desire to pray and explore opportunities to reach out to students locally. Please continue to pray that the Los Angles EGF would be revived. – Emmanuel Emmady

REPORT ON THE OFUESI SOUTHERN CONFERENCE, GLEN ROSE, TX, Aug 13-14 Southern OFUESI Conference was held this year yet another new location for the first time at River Bend Retreat Center in Glenn Rose, TX. This retreat center is about one hour south-west of the Dallas, TX being the closest major city. Most conference attendees are from Austin (2 hrs), Houston (4 hrs), Lubbock (4 hrs) College Station (2 hrs) as far away as Harlingen (9 hrs). In all about 70 participants at the peak were in attendance to hear, discuss, and respond to the challenge among university students. We had our senior participants in their 70s and youngest participants in their early years. Some of the participants came to know our Lord as their Savior through UESI ministry in India and some have been constant supporters of OFUESI for over a decade in Texas. All our worship sessions were led by John Cherukuri and it seemed like every year his team is getting younger in their age (John, Hannah, Daniel, and Shiny) with assistance from Bro Vijay for all PowerPoint slides. All our children between ages 2 and 12 are taken care by Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) volunteers, Cathy and Wes for all the sessions simultaneously. Our gathering was over a 24 hour time period starting on Saturday the 13th around 11 am and closed off with lunch on Sunday the 14th that included four major sessions, three activities, two speakers, and one baptism. Al these events are captured in more than 500 pictures and can be

Day -01: We started our first session in a smaller room (as the camp site was bustling with lots of other campers were still concluding their program). After our opening worship, we started our first session led by Sis Manjula who set the pace for our gathering. She challenged us all on some of our sacrifices “to give an account for the hope that is in you” with emphasis on purity in character and purity in conduct. Towards the end of the session, we all spent time as three small groups and further discussed on the presentation. Some of the conclusions from each group were presented by Anitha, Vijay, and Mano. We all had to rush for lunch and re-arrange our other sessions for post lunch time.

After lunch, we met in the same small room for worship followed by OFUESI presentations. Bro Prem presented and discussed first 50 years of UESI impact in India followed by first 10 years of OFUESI ministry efforts and challenged by the alarming need among International Students (about 975k in 2015) in particular from Indian (a 30% increase from India from 102k to 132k during the past two years). Immediately following, Bro Lazarus took the session and presented the ministry growth of UESI during the past 10 years culminating to 60 years of UESI celebration in 2014 and continued on current UESI needs for the past two years including urgently needed staff workers and retreat center in the North. At the end of the challenging discussions, we all spent some time in group prayers before moving on to the next session.

Practical Session led by Sis Manjula, all youth met in the other smaller room for Youth Discussions, and all children continued their activities with CEF volunteers. Sis Manjula led the session on Mentorship with more emphasis on “open homes” and challenging the need for the growth of the ministry giving numerous examples of her personal life and experiences of open home of Julius anna and Renu a a a’s place in Vizag as a graduate student that transformed and mentored her to follow the full time ministry call for the past 30 years. Bro Manu Paul led the discussions for the youth on the importance and value of Quiet Time in the life of a believer. More importantly the value and dependence for youth was discussed on daily reading and meditations of the scriptures. Immediately after these simultaneous practical talk sessions, we all met and divided into two groups for evening scheduled activities prior to the dinner hour. One group got to ride around the Camp Site of more than few thousand acers in open tractor trailer truck that was comfortable cushioned with hay. The other group went for skeet shooting with a rifles and pellets in the hot sun looking for a moving target at high speed about a quarter mile away.

After early evening dinner, most families with children and several adults spent their time in the swimming pool cooling off their tiresome of hard work and delayed our originally planned sessions. Around 9:30 pm, we all met for worship followed by a long session for discussions by Bro Lazarus. We had interactive discussions on what we learnt about the student need and what we realize the value of the student ministry not only in India in our own neighborhoods in the US and in particular in Texas. The impact is to make an effort to reach our own Indian students in one way or the other with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Best practices of Open Home and Open Invitation for these students in need was emphasized in the discussions. We concluded our Day-01 program around 11 PM with Bro Joel Pallapati’s closing prayer. Few families have to leave for their long distance travel and next day commitments in their congregations. Due to delayed time and sessions, we had to cancel the originally planned popular Quiz Time (Bro Raju) and Singing Event (Bro Prem).

Accommodation and sleeping quarters were considered to be spacious and luxurious for many with all needed modern amenities for all families that camped in nearly 20 condominiums. Day -02: Our Day-0 started with a brea fast time followed by a wal to the campsite la e where we had early morning baptism time. t was an exuberant event with an early morning brig sun around am. Nearly 40 gathered to witness and sing praises for the 10 year old Sam who was baptized by Bro Lazarus in that la e. Sam’s mom admittedly admired the reverence and our commitment for the whole process which was planned and scheduled per her request over the past three weeks. All the telephones calls and counselling over phone and personal discussions during the previous night on the assurance of salvation were testaments to our commitment to this process. Also, later that day, during our communion time it was even special as Bro Lazarus made sure to officiate to the new child being the special one to receive communion first. At the end, Amy organized a Bible that was signed by nearly 40 people that was presented with prayer and blessing by Sis. Vallie.

We started our Sunday worship with singing and praise time followed by a final message by Bro Lazarus. It was still an interactive sessions with several references to current students and their need for the Savior with emphasis on our commitment to reach them with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our offertory song was led by Indira with a moment’s notice. After snacks and coffee, we all met for about 30 minutes of recap and suggestions led by Bro Raju and assisted by Bro Prem. We had few songs by

our youngest singers intermittently. Many suggested few corrections and updates including following time-line of plans and announced schedules. There were few mishaps in the plans and we all agreed to take care of these items, we had two volunteers (Raju G and John C) to help for the next conference particularly with timings and planned schedule. We concluded our gathering with a very young singer. All families left the camp between 2 and 4 pm after cleanup and a brief visit and prayer time with the Speakers. This year the conference was preceded by weekly prayer sessions (Sundays) and planning sessions (Tuesdays) led and coordinated by Suresh & Anitha Konatham and Naga & Sirisha Valasagandla with the support from Raju & Indira Goduguchintha, John & Martha Cherukuri. From your servant for Jesus’ sake … Our Walk from Grace to Glory Dear OFUESI Family, I Peter, Chapter 5 opens with instructions on how to be a good shepherd and our conference speaker Mr. John Lazarus expounded from it on how we can be authentic, responsible, transparent and accountable leaders in our OFUESI context. A few of the reports of our conferences were covered in the last issue and a few more are presented in this issue. Please review them and discuss the principles in local EGF gatherings. May the Lord provide His grace to follow through with our commitments made during the conferences! The Executive Committee appreciates the efforts of and cooperation by all the conference coordinators. Please praise God with us that the Lord has been gracious to Mr. and Mrs. Lazarus in allowing them to minister to our people all across the U.S. and return to India safely on September 19, 2016. We applaud their ministry of 30+ years through UESI. Apostle Peter provides key principles in the rest of the chapter in our walk from grace to glory. We should be humble (prerequisite for grace), vigilant (of the roaring Satan) and hopeful (of our glory to come). In verse 10, we read, “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, , will himself restore you, make you strong, firm and steadfast..” Let us remember suffering is only for a season and it builds in us Christian character. The God of all grace has called us to eternal glory and that is what matters ultimately. He himself settles us. Praise be to His precious name! As you review this issue of KIT, Sahayams who have retired from UESI not long ago, having ministered as its missionaries in Fiji islands and Guyana for a decade, have been called to minister among the forgotten people of India in Guyana for three years starting this November 1, 2016. They are sent by Acts of Mercy, 230 Florence St., Sunnyvale, CA

94086. Kindly remember them in prayer as they serve afresh having seen God work miraculously in their health during their short retirement. God’s ways are very special indeed. We are entering a strategic time of the year in terms of evangelism with Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. May the Lord inspire our OFUESI families with creative ways of sharing the good news of the gospel with students and neighbors. Please share your experiences with the KIT Editorial team so we can pass those stories to the readership. Here is another opportunity for prayer and participation. The annual meeting of the OFUESI National Council is being held in Denver, CO during December 3-4, 2016. Pray for the EC and NC and the new leadership to serve in the next 2-year term. Should you plan to join as observers, please contact Bro. Joe Sudhakar for details. UESI staff will have their retreat (TRISCON 2016) during the last week of December at UBS, Pune. This triennial conference did not take place in 2013 due to budgetary constraints and so it is being held after 6 years this time. Our NC member, Dr. Ravi David will be speaking at this conference. A generous contribution from OFUESI towards this conference’s expenses will be timely and will relieve staff from paying the registration fee from their pocket. Remember also year-end gifts must be dated before Dec 31, 2016 to be treated as contributions for this year. Please pray for various needs of UESI and contribute as the Lord enables. Yours in Our Lord, Subha Kumpaty

REPORT ON OFUESI SOUTHEAST CONF., ATLANTA, GA The South East Region OFUESI Conference was held on August 27, 2016 at Mt Pisgah Christian School in Atlanta, Georgia. The conference began with a time of lively singing and worship led by a group of ten seasoned and budding musicians, led by Arun Thamban. The first session was a Bible exposition led by Sister Manjula Lazarus, based on the conference theme of “Identity and Involvement”, drawn from 1 Peter chapters 2 and 3. This was followed by a time of discussion in groups, the findings of which were presented to the larger group. Lunch was followed by fellowship and informal conversations. The post-lunch session was a panel discussion led by Arun Thamban, Gunasingh and Ravi David wherein we discussed the implication of the learnings from 1 Peter in our personal life, professional life and family life. The next session was a time of singing, worship and praying for the ministry of UESI and OFUESI. The final message was given by Brother John Lazarus challenging the group to a life of personal and family prayer, Bible study and active involvement in the ministry. On Sunday, August 28, Brother Lazarus and Sister Manjula ministered at a gathering held in Barnwell, SC, organized by Brother Johnson and family. We are grateful to God for a good time of worship, fellowship, learning and growing as a community of God’s people. We pray that the seeds that have been sown will bear much fruit in the year ahead. We are grateful to God for His blessings and for the sacrificial contributions of many people, in many ways, which made our time together a blessed one. (Please see the group picture at the end) – Organizing team (Dr. Ravid David, Mr. Arun Thamban and Dr. Gunasingh)

REPORT ON BARNWELL, SC MEETING We had an opportunity to gather with Bro. Lazarus and Sis. Manjula on the 28th of August in Barnwell SC. Six families from Barnwell, SC and two families from Augusta, GA were able to participate with us on this day. Sis. Manjula shared her personal testimony on her salvation experience and her obedience towards the will of God in her marriage; though her father, a non-believer was opposed to it. She exhorted us on how to live a good Christian life and the need for a personal relationship with Christ. Furthermore, she stressed the importance of

studying God’s word every morning. She spoke from the epistle of Peter, where she highlighted the importance of our identity and worldview in postmodern America. The congregation including many teenagers and youngsters were inspired by her testimony and message. Bro Lazarus spoke about EU, the ministry being done amongst students in colleges and universities across India. Since many of our youth are currently attending University of South Carolina, Columbia, he emphatically addressed the need to take an initiative on starting a Bible study on campus. Hearing the testimonies of Sis Manjula and Bro. Lazarus, we as a congregation have been inspired to playing an active role in ministry amongst Indian students at USC, Columbia. – Johnson Mettakadapa

Gathering at Barnwell, SC REPORT ON THE OFUESI MIDWEST CONFERENCE, HILLSDALE, MI, Sep 3-4 The 12th OFUESI Midwest Regional Conference took place at the Michindoh Conference Center, 4545 E. Bacon Rd., Hillsdale, MI 49242 during the labor-day weekend, September 3-4, 2016. This year’s coordinators were Wilson Jacob and Joseph Nokku from Detroit, MI (assisted by Jijo Kurien). Most of the delegates arrived by Noon and had lunch at the Conference Center. We started the opening session of the conference at 1:30 pm. Bro. Mathew Thomas led us in the reading of the theme verses, I Peter 2:9 and 3:15 and praying followed by a time of worship through singing by the Detroit graduate students. Sis. Manjula spoke on our identity and response in this first session from I Peter Chapters 1 and 2.

Sister Manjula, after a quick summary of her conversion and aftermath, began sharing on our identity. She talked about person (Peter), people (Gentiles, the scattered), precept (the letter as other side of a tapestry- difficult experiences and tough situations) and purpose (offering hope, comfort and promises amidst persecution). Her main point was that we too, living in a foreign land, should not compromise with foreign culture but know how to handle persecution, be faithful to the Lord Jesus and live a life of moral integrity. We are earthly sojourners looking forward to a heavenly inheritance (I Peter 1:3-12). Know your salvation. We should know whose we are. Have God’s assurance and His abundance. Our salvation has a divine origin. The nature of our inheritance is pure, perfect, permanent and secure. Live your salvation- values, lifestyle. Christ-like dignity and moral integrity should be practiced. Mrs. Manjula talked about trials that they reveal the quality of our faith. They are temporary, necessary and arbitrary. She talked about how the Lord called her as full-time UESI staff and how her dad wanted her to promise her not to go to full-time work (as he did not want her to be in such work with meager compensation). Her dad objected to marrying a full-time worker (again for monetary constraints of such a life). The Lord spoke from “little while” – transitory nature of trials from I Peter. Mrs. Manjula was able to tell sorry to dad that she could not fulfill his desire because she could not say no to God when He calls her. It was only after the dad’s passing, her marriage with Mr. Lazarus took place. She talked about transparency of a believer (showing a fish with digestive system clearly visible). She was able to share the wonder of her non-Christian friends in Vijayawada about the affectionate manner in which over 800 guests at her daughter’s wedding talked to one another. We can show the hallmarks of UESI such as fellowship, personal care, equipping to others. We must have purity in character and propriety in conduct. Chapter 2 verse 1 has five sins that spoil our relationships (deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander and malice). Instead we should crave the spiritual milk-the Word. How was your appetite when you received Christ? How is it now? Do you have the intense passion? We must also enjoy our salvation. Call of Christ and Benevolences of Christ from 2:1-10. He has called us out of darkness (out of ignorance) to light (truth). See the metaphors- living stones. Spiritual house; God shapes us into a structure. God loves to dwell in us. Is He

comfortable? Mrs. Manjula required us to break into four groups to answer the question: What are the sacrifices we can offer to God in our day-to-day life? Some of the answers were: sacrifice of praise, giving time for evangelism, open homes, preparing to meet God- holiness, repentance, humbling; sacrifice of thinking others first, saving money creatively to help others, living sacrifice etc. Our identity should be reflected in our lifestyle, responses, worship and ministry, Mrs. Manjula concluded. We had a tea-break and more importantly water slides for children. After dinner, we took a group photo. We met for the second session at 7 pm with Thomas Mathai praying and Detroit graduate students leading in a time of worship. Paramjyothi Marati introduced the speaker and Bro. John Lazarus took up a study on Successive Leadership from I Chr. 12:32-40. After we know our identity, we want to talk about our involvement - Building His Kingdom. He looked at the men of Issachar- who understood the times. Bro. Lazarus gave the background, early history Jdg 1:13-14 Othniel, Samuel and I Sam 8:1-4 transition to monarchy. He made us think on: What are the issues involved in v. 4? What failures did Samuel have? What should Samuel have done as a leader to stabilize the Nation and also in preparing the successor? The key thought was that the men of Issachar understood the changing scenario of the nation. Who is a leader? One who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way- Maxwell. They knew what Israel should do: possess, overcome.. Bro. Lazarus got us to answer what the student needs are and their challenges are (transportation, homesickness, anxiety, culture shock, not having a place to go at Christmas break etc). Similarly what the challenges are to the families (time and distance, not having domestic help, needs of older parents in India, our own kids activities etc.). The point of the exercise was to understand the changing scenario and come up with our response as leaders. Pray, find resources to match needs and delegate (not take all problems upon ourselves). Bro. Lazarus wanted us to review the vision and mission of OFUESI and prioritize our lives understanding God’s purposes for the world and His church. He wanted us to be specific in our call to the Great Commission. We also gave time to Lazarus couple to lead us on family relationships. We read I Peter 3:1-7, Peter’s instructions to husbands and wives. It takes hard work together for a successful marriage. It is not a

garden but bare patch of earth given the tools for us to work with and cultivate. Marriage is to enjoy companionship. Togetherness- mutual support, help and encouragement resulting in synergy of thought and action is the main purpose. We must set aside quality time. When we draw closer to God, we will draw closer to each other. We were divided as husbands and wives to write our expectations of the spouses. They were discussed in the large group together. Sister Manjula asked which category our marriages are: Happy, Good, Agreeable, Tolerable? Mathew Thomas closed the session in prayer. After a quick tea break, we had the camp fire with sharing testimonies and praying for those who shared. We had chapatti and chicken tikka to go with marshmallows, thanks to Detroit EGF. On the Lord’s day, after a nice breakfast, we gathered for worship. Our worship was led by children of Midwest EGF families. Bro. Jio Kurien led us for the time of individual worship and Bro. Thomas Mathai shared on “worship” from 2 Chr 20:1-26. Bro. Mathai said, “Worship is dear to me. I sing when I am down”. The Lord gives a garment of praise for the spirit of despair. O the love that will not let me go, sings George Matheson amidst difficult life situation. Solo Deo Gloria, wrote Bach. Vast army is up. Jehoshapat consults God. He gives the world view- God created it, He is bigger than the universe. We have no power to face, v. 12. Our eyes are upon YOU. The battle is not yours but God’s. Trust His Word. The king fell before the Lord. Worshipped Him. Praise Him for the splendor of His holiness. Beracah- PRAISE valleys. Resurrected Lord. Nothing that can separate us from the love of God. His love endures forever. Upon Jijo’s conclusion of the worship session (Psalm 16), there was a time of prayer for Bro. Vinod Malachi at his request. The UESI prayer points were distributed for people to pray during the afternoon break. A video on Himachal Pradesh EU work was shown to remind the grassroots work of UESI. We took a small coffee break before we assembled for the next session with Mrs. Manjula on mentoring. The next session was on mentoring by Mrs. Lazarus. She asked us to answer these questions on a sheet of paper. 1) Who contributed for your salvation? 2) What is their contribution in your faith journey? 3) Write down their names. She brought up a reality. Many come to the Lord (babies). We are not seeing adults. Why? Servant leadership is lacking. Mentoring too. Servant leaders as mentors is the

need of the day. What are the things that matter to OFUESI? Doctrine- study of God’s Word, Lifestyle- Translating the word in life, People- Building people to establishing His kingdom. It is a grassroots ministry (not spectacular) -We are people oriented ministry. Holiness- purity in thought and behavior. A life touched by God always ends in touching others. Mentor means a wise and responsible advisor. Is mentoring mandatory for OFUESI ministry? Yes. Why? Mt 28:19,20 mandatory to every believer. There is a biblical basis- Moses by Jethro, Samuel by Eli, Jesus mentored His disciple, Barnabas and Paul excelled (Acts 9-15) Barnabas took risk and mentored. If you don’t mentor, what will happen? Col 1:28 help them mature in Christ; base for preparing right and quality leaders for the nation. The greatest missionaries of IFES are not staff. It is the students. – Daniel Bourdanne. If we mentor- they will reach any part of the country, trend setters, creative thinkers, naturally trained. Mentoring is essential and crucial. Core values are caught (not taught). Mentoring helps them to establish a Christian home. Mentoring for whom? Everybody- Sis. Manjula mentored by Prema Fenn; Abhijit mentored by Mathew and Susan. What are the KEYS to become a mentor? Good walk with the Lord, well-versed with the Word (Uchita salaha- free of cost suggestion may destroy people- beware), depending and discerning Jn 14:15-17; Attentive listening skills James 1:19, open mind, acceptance, and transparency. As Sister goes to DT camps, she is shocked sometimes hearing certain situations they are in. We need mentoring. JESUS is our model in Mentoring. He had QT with the Father, He taught, lived, gave time. He worked with emotional, doubtful, immature, selfish people – 12 disciples and Jesus was clear about the purpose. He knew how to win the trust, confidence and love; Jesus went to the home court. Sis. Manjula’s story- Sis. Alice came to her room and discipled her. When Bro. Julius came to see her, he said, “Hello Manjula” and it touched her as a new follower of Christ that someone would call her by name. HOW TO MENTOR in OFUESI context? Praying for the openings- contacting the people by visiting Universities, Contacting Indian students- posting flyers, Sharing Scripture, Creating a hospitable atmosphere, One student reached by one family, simple living, sacrificial giving, open home. Sis. Manjula talked about the open home of Bro. Julius and Sis. Renuka. Bro. Julius was a Customs officer, yet, Sis. Renuka bought cut pieces to stitch clothes

for children. Their son was crying one time as they bought him only a shirt for the birthday. She was going to stich a short instead of a full length pant. Sis. Manjula found out why. Julius anna was the Treasurer of AP EGF at that time. Due to meagre amount collected for the staff, his family was sending all their salary for the staff salaries. They had 2 bed rooms- which were occupied every day by students. It was a home full of students. Sister once said sorry that students took all their privacy by the way they encroached their space. Values are caught. Even our children need an open home. Mrs. Manjula’s daughter had one in Pune. A mentor is being a friend, maintaining confidentiality, helping with material needs, empathizing- standing in the other person’s shoe (not sympathizing only). There is a cost involved- time, money (Bro. Julius- took PF money to pay for a student). Mrs. Manjula heard stories of mentoring in OFUESI and asked us to continue the legacy. We went to lunch immediately after this excellent session. The final session began with singing by the teenagers followed by two skits by these young people- both males and females. Before Bro. Lazarus came to speak, Subha read the words on the plaque the OFUESI Midwest families are giving the couple congratulating them on 30 years of excellent involvement in college campuses through UESI with the verse I Cor 15:58. In his final message from I Peter 5 on How to Shepherd, Bro. Lazarus shared about his call, his education and various ministry responsibilities in UESI. He has shared that due to his being here in the US, the relieving letter at UESI has been put off for a month on his retirement as the staff should not retire in a foreign land. I Peter 5:1-11 Building His Kingdom. From the theme verse, You may declare – speak forth, to tell out, to set forth. Chapter 5 exhorts on How to be a shepherd. How could Peter stir the elders to take the lead and do their duty? Action plan 1) Be a good shepherd. Calling, vision; provide supervision. good example. From Peter’s dialogue with Jesus after resurrection, he was given command to do these: Feeding, Discipleship, Leadership. Peter’s authority is based on service. 2) Be a Responsible Shepherd- Devils in church to be guarded- abuse of power, love of money, seduction of property (jovially Bro. Lazarus talked about sermon on the Mount becoming sermon on the amount. As one said, the

final verdict is not upon success in gaining a chief seat but on encouraging the faint, the weak, the broken-hearted and the suppressed. 3) Shepherd of Integrity- Say who you are and do it. Areas include financial, holiness, leadership, and ministry integrity. 4) Accountability: Being answerable- upward and downward. 5) Be willing to take risk. What are the risk areas in OFUESI? Knowing the target group, Understanding the contemporary student world, Vision for student ministry and owning the ministry. Bro. Lazarus challenged us in a very soft tone by exposing the extinction possible by non-involvement and non-cooperation. He expected us to read the KIT, pray for UESI and OFUESI and be actively involved as shepherds developing future leaders. He expected us to be clear on the vision and mission and go after it so we will be making a difference in the world. Bro. Lazarus asked Hephzibah Kumpaty to commit all of us to the Lord. Wilson Jacob gave vote of thanks to various people and Vinod Malachi offered the benediction and the closing prayer. Children were able to avail the water slides and swimming at the beach before the checkout at 5 pm. We returned to our respective homes rejoicing in the Lord for what He has accomplished in us during this conference. (Submitted by Wilson Jacob, Joseph Nokku and Subha Kumpaty) Group picture is at the end.
