5. Why did you choose not to live on campus in a University Residence Hall or Apartment?Response Rate: 13% (N=19) Question Type: Paragraph Tag: Q4

Besides the lack of money, I wasn't really given a choice in the matter. I had to live at home, its a Guyanesething.

cheaper

Cheaper, living with family

chepaer

did not have the money to support myself

Didn't like my roommate, chose to live in fraternity.

I already had a place to live with my brother who is also a student here at the U of M

I don't live very far away so it's cheaper for me to live with my parents and drive to campus than to live there.

It is cheaper to live at home and commute.

It seems much cheaper and easier to live at home.

It worked out better for me. I moved into my grandparents' house after they moved out. More space and betterroommates for cheaper. It just made more sense.

It's expensive and I did not want to take out any loans during my freshmen year.

I've lived in a dormitory before and felt that it was in my best interest to live on my own to learn how to cook, clean, ect. on my own.

The cost of living in a residence hall was too high.

The room was not good

To save money. I don't pay rent to live at home

To save some money.

Too expensive

Too expensive and I need to be with my family.

20. What can the University do to make you feel more successful?Response Rate: 28% (N=41) Question Type: Paragraph Tag: Q8

All of the things that need to be developed are personal, so I think that the University is doing their best under thecircumstances.

Better food

Continue supporting cultural events such as Jewish cultural month to allow students to interact with diversebackgrounds.

Don't overwhelm freshmen with so much to do.

During Welcome Week, it would have been nice to learn some time management skills.

eliminate professors that are able to teach students as well as do their own research. Many professors have noidea how teaching works and overcomplicate a topic or make it far to hard to understand, because they do notknow how to TEACH someone.

Encourage more student group advertisement and diversity/quantity of student groups.

Give me more opportunities to engage with students and faculty.

Give more opportunities for students to interact with professors

Give tips to students on how to approach faculty.

Give trainings on how to study more effectively.

Have a better way to register for classes, as my schedule is horrible this semester because I registered on thelast day.

Have the TA's speak more clear and understandable english.

I can't think of anything specific, I feel it's doing about as good a job as it can.

I feel like the calculus that accompanies the physics 1301 and 1302 should be explained further.

I honestly think they do a great job, welcome week was a really great way to come to such a huge campus andlearn lots of beneficial things before the year began.

I think the University should try and make more study groups for each of the individual classes, especially aroundthe time of big exams. I know this would for sure make me feel more prepared for exams and help me feel moresuccessful with my overall college experience.

20. What can the University do to make you feel more successful? (Continued)

I think they do enough and the majority should fall on the effort students put forth themselves.

Is a resume really necessary for an on-campus student job?

It's just hard to get to know professors in my opinion, at a school this large, especially when you don't need helpon a subject. Hard to justify going to office hours when you don't really need help with a subject.

Lectures with more than one hundred people that use laptops and have multiple TAs lose a lot of theengagement of their students. I would be more successful if more classes had Honors components which wouldallow me to know my professors on a first-name basis and better understand their expectations.

Let there be more fun events and things to do on weekends that will actually attract a good percentage of thefreshman population.

More activities!

More CLA UROP opportunities

More interactions between students who commute.

More study groups.

Not cost so much.

not really sure, possibly smaller classes?

Offer tutoring in the dorms? I don't think there is much else.

Place moral/value standards on students being excepted.

Promote diverse activities more

Provide more ways to connect with faculty that are focused in your area of study.

Provide required study groups before tests.

smaller classes

Some teachers aren't clear about what they want, specifically those who are not successful in English (ie TA'sfrom China)

Sponsor more time management workshops and events designed to meet people

20. What can the University do to make you feel more successful? (Continued)

The professor I have for calculus is absolutely impossible! He is actually ok that half his students have a goodchance of failing. For what we pay and what time we put into this university I find that completely out of line! I'mnot saying that I need an A in the class, but its not acceptable.

The University is doing a great job; because of the need to commute and other priorities, I haven't been able totake part in as many things as I want to.

They can offer more areas for only commuter students to go to. Many times students who live on campus occupyall of coffman its difficult for commuter students because not only do we not know to go but we also don't have aplace to go. Also you can reserve lockers for only commuter students.

Use Moodle instead of Webvista.

Why is it fair for blatantly rude, uncaring professors to teach 1001 classes that freshman take? I've had an awfulexperience with professors here, it it wasn't for 2 professors I have this semester, basing my choice on lastsemester (my 1st semester here) I seriously considered switching universities.

52. How do you plan to address these anxieties or concerns?Response Rate: 57% (N=85) Question Type: Paragraph Tag: Q16

1. I just need to step up academically since my first semester, which shouldn't be hard I just have to adjust mypriorities. 2. I am not really concerned, but I just need to focus on sticking to my budget to be financiallyaccepted. I also need to find a job this summer.

All you can do is keep working through them. Apply for scholarships, study hard, sleep as much as possible andeat well.

Apply for as many scholarships as possible but there are not many that are not need-based or given to minoritystudents.

Apply for scholarships, and study with friends.

Ask for help from resources.

Better time management and keeping a food journal

build a routine or plan for myself that includes enough study time as well as time to work out.

By eating healthier in the Residence hall and going to bed earlier. Also applying for scholarships and trying tofind a job next year.

By remembering to breathe.

By scheduling my time and going to One Stop and my advisors with questions and concerns.

By studying a lot, applying for scholarships/financial aid/working to pay my tuition and spending a lot of time inthe library.

Continue to study hard when necessary, eat more wisely (perhaps a few vegetables wouldn't hurt) and motivatemyself to begin a research project.

Devote more time.

devoting my time and energy towards them

Do my best in class, get help if needed. Keep track of my grades. Meet people and talk to them.

Eat fruits and vegetables, talk to people, and do my homework.

Engage in more activities and make time out of the classroom to meet new people. Exploring different classesand talking to students/undergraduates what their experiences were in a specific field/major.

explore different classes, make a worthy time schedule, and do my best to speak up.

Find resources on campus that help.

Generally, I try to make plans and budget things. I also try to talk to by boyfriend back home every day.

hard work

Hopefully going to get help deciding on a major and getting out more.

Hopefully the U of M will start costing less so I don't have to constantly worry about money.

I already do.

I am getting a tutor and I plan to try to maintain my relationships better. I feel like I am stuck in my current livingsituation however.

I am not quite sure at this point.

I am trying to write more things down to remember them and manage the free time I have more wisely.

I do all my homework, attend all classes, and study for exams. I have done some research about majors andcareers and have plans to discuss this with my academic adviser. As far as health I have had a number of thingsto get over (i.e. broken foot) so I've been taking care of myself (eating well, sleeping enough most of the time)and am trying to be patient until I can exercise again.

I have no idea.

I know that as I adjust more to college life things will hopefully get a little bit easier, I just need to learn how tomake a routine here and stick with it since its different being here than being at home

I plan on buying out the rest of my dorm contract this week and moving into a house with other sudents who arephysics majors.

I plan on taking on more work hours over the summer, and figuring out a way to spend time with everyone I careabout, so that no one feels left out. I also plan to study harder for the upcoming tests and finals.

I plan to focus on school first to help with worrying about classes. I don't know what to do about the other two.

I usually go with the flow. I'm great at time management but I'm very indecisive. Mostly right now I'm worriedabout finding a place to live next year, but that could change next week. It varies a lot, I try to deal with things asthey come up.

52. How do you plan to address these anxieties or concerns? (Continued)

I want to continue to work the way I do, as well as try to find new ways to manage my time and use my timeeffectively while studying.

I will try to schedule workouts into my schedule as well as make a budget for my money.

I would like to go to the rec center more often, invite people over more, and join a club, assuming it does notconflict with my work load. I'm hoping exercising will help me focus better on my work.

In stride.

Joining student groups, etc.

Just doing what I normally do, making to-do lists and getting things done.

Just get through the semester to get recharged over summer.

Just keep on keepin' on, and cross bridges when we get to them.

Just work on them more, it takes time outside of my other responsibilites

Keep applying and interviewing until I get a job, which will ease financial concerns. Also applying for scholarshipsand staying on top of my coursework.

Keep in contact with others, staying on top of my coursework and working on my time management skills. Toaddress my health concerns I try to establish a regular sleeping pattern, workout and eat healthily. For financialpurposes I am applying to different jobs.

keep trying to branch out into different social circles, research opportunities in different areas.

Live with my bitch roommate for the rest of the semester.

Look into other college experiences and consider all of my options.

Make personal changes and get outside my comfort zone

Manage my time efficiently.

Mental health medication.

Not by talking to the college advisors and counselors. They have been useless, and meeting with them makesme feel worse about this university.

Not sure yet

Taking it day by day.

Talk with an Academic Advisor

Them them one at a time

To plan a schedule for myself and try to work as much as I can at my on-campus job and also to take time out ofthe day to workout and take care of myself so I do not become overwhelmed and stressed.

Try harder. That's about all we can do, even if it's impossible.

Study. - 2

1. First 6-8 weeks are the best weeks. Make friends and enjoy the warm weather and overall atmosphere ofcollege. It's get a different feel later. 2. Try as hard as you can academically, some of the easier classes are youfirst year and you can get a really nice GPA if you put in an ounce of effort, unlike me. 3. Meet upperclassmen. It's important to social life.

Be friendly and take everything as it comes.

Be open to change. College is different than high school and you have to go with the flow until you actually feellike you belong.

Be open to everyone you meet because that's how you build a big, strong group of friends early on at college, which is a huge advantage.

be outgoing and confident to explore this huge university.

Be outgoing. You are all in the same boat.

Be prepared to be on your own and have a great time. Don't procrastinate.

Be social, because everyone else around you is scared too.

College is a huge transition, it takes a lot of time to get used to the freedom of living on your own and becomingresponsible for more than you've probably ever had to be responsible for before. Also, keep up in class becauseit is so easy to fall behind and stay behind.

College is a lot different then high school. It pays to study.

Come in with an open-mind, college is what you make it! Love it, it's all one big experience!

Come prepared to study. Study hard, then play later. Keep the main thing, the main thing.

Consider other universities, this one is ridiculous. They put policies online, then tell you those are "outdated, andare o longer followed". Don't live in the Residence Halls, there are cockroaches. when you report thecockroaches you get told "It's okay, they usually just live in the drain system, they don't usually stay in thebathrooms. We will put water in the drains so the cockroaches will go bak to living down there."

Do not procrastinate unless you did extremely well doing it in high school because it will catch up to you.

Do not procrastinate. The moment you start to procrastinate, you will never be able to fully come back from that. That is the one thing I regret doing.

86. What words of advice can you give to incoming first-year students? (Continued)

Do not stay in your room.

Do well in school, but try to find a community where you fit in so that this school gets smaller. Whether that's afraternity, sorority, student group, or the people on your floor, stay connected.

Do your best to budget your time accordingly from the very start so you don't get behind and have to attempt todo it later once you're set in your ways.

Don't ask yourself why, but why not when considering taking a chance. It can be tough, but the vast majority ofthe time, your going to come away from the experience better off than you were before. Also, smile as much asyou can. Take me serious when I say it greatly enhances your day to day living - its the truth.

Don't be nervous about meeting new people because everyone is in the same boat. Don't be shy and beyourself.

Don't be nervous!

don't be overconfident and make an impossible workload

Don't do welcome week stuff

Don't drink. You give up so much when you do, even if you can pull of good grades.

Don't fall behind on your homework, and get at least 8 hours of sleep each day.

Don't give up. If you can make it through the first couple weeks, you can make it through anything.

Don't let yourself get worked up, take things one step at a time. Ask for help when needed, take chances whennecessary, and know that whatever you are going through, there are many people out there that have gonethrough it before and can help you.

Don't overload yourself, leave time to enjoy what college is all about.

Don't Procrastinate; try to start things when you recieve them.

Don't set expectations of yourself that are too high.

Don't stack up homework for the weekends. Force yourself to study at least 2-3 hours a day and the weekendswill be enjoyable.

Enjoy welcome week while it lasts and make a lot of friends.

Establish good habits right away

Find something you want to get involved with and get involved with it early on. Don't let the people you meetinfluence your decisions--you probably won't even remember them in a year.

Focus on school, don't get caught up in the social life.

Freshman year first semester is much more laid back than you'd expect

Get involved

Get involved and do not be afraid to seek help.

Get involved and don't get behind.

Get involved and have fun!

Get involved early

Get involved in something, and try out a few activities before settling on one or a couple to commit to.

Get lots of rest and take academics seriously from the start. Make your education your primary goal, but don't beafraid to get out there and meet new people!

Get on top of your school work the first week of school! Once you start falling behind, it's hard to catch up.

Get ready ;) Ask for help when you need it and don't plan on coming in fully-prepared. You're going to getknocked off of your feet no matter what.

Go for it!

go into college with an open mind and don't everything so seriously

go to office hours even if you don't have questions.

Go to office hours!

have fun, don't get hung up on details

Hey, the U can be hard, so make sure you find time to just relax and take a break from studying.

86. What words of advice can you give to incoming first-year students? (Continued)

If you're going into CLA, just pick a major and DO NOT pick undecided. You will most likely be thrown into ATSand forced to participate in their classes. Just pick a major you feel interested in, and then switch out to another ifyou don't like it.

It's much harder than you expect, but it'll grow on you.

It's not as easy as you think it's going to be. It takes a while to get used to.

Join a student organization its the best way to make the campus feel smaller. Don't be freaked out if it seemseveryone else is pairing up and finding friends, you'll find friends too.

Keep on rockin' in the free world.

Keep on top of your work because it does pile up and eventually the stress will get to a point where you can'thandle it anymore.

Keep yourself open to new people, ideas, and experiences.

Learn who you are and what you can handle so you don't go over board. This is also important so you knowwhen you should take classes and study. If you don't, college is not going to be easy. Make time and take care ofyourself so you can be focused in class and have energy to do stuff. Have fun but stay on top of your work.

Make study groups.

Make sure to actually study for your exams (close Facebook, put away your cellphone). Because you won't getas much "busy-work" in college as you might have in high school, you won't be forced to study in college, somake sure to set time for studying.

Make sure to balance school and fun, both are important in order to maintain your sanity.

Make sure to manage your time wisely and know when you need to ask questions, specific questions.

Meet as many new friends as possible, join clubs that you are interested in and take risks

Meet as many people as possible and try to gain some close friendships. Also, stay ahead of your homeworkand do not procrastinate.

Meet as many people as you can during Welcome Week because once you get further into the year people havealready formed into groups. Everyone is still very friendly but it's much easier during WW.

Meet the people that live around you or find some kind of social niche right away. Find multiple niches if possible.

86. What words of advice can you give to incoming first-year students? (Continued)

Meet your neighbors

Never underestimate the difficulty of the classes you are taking, and also never underestimate your own abilities.

People always say college is going to be the best time of your life, but they never tell you that it takes time forthat to happen. Have patience.

Really push yourself in class and outside of class. Put yourself out there and try and meet a lot of people. Also, get involved in at least one group/sport/activity so that you can build solid relationships with people.

Seek help right away from TAs, Tutors or Professors if you are struggling.

Set aside time for studying, and then stick with it. Get started on projects and assignments earlier than you thinkyou need to.

Start strong and dive right into studying and managing your time.

Start Studying early, it will help you in the end.

Stay focused.

Step out of your comfort zone. You can be whoever you want to be here.

study and get your work done

Study and go out and get involved in clubs or things that interest you with others to ease your thoughts about thestresses of classes!

Study first.. Party next..

study hard

Study more than you think you need to, because not staying on task with coursework and studying can bedetrimental to your academic success. Also, manage time wisely and seek help if you are struggling with anyclasses.

STUDY!!! INTERACT WITH OTHERS! DO NOT GET CAUGHT UP IN THE HYPE OF BEING IN COLLEGEAND PARTYING!

Study. Be active. Don't stress yourself out. Be involved. Prepare in advance.

Take advantage of the incredible resources available at the U.

86. What words of advice can you give to incoming first-year students? (Continued)

Take class seriously

Take things as they come and you will do fine.

Try hard.

Use all the tools your professors offer you at the beginning of the school year. They adjust their tools with respectto the class before and they are made to build your success.

Use grad planner, and schedulizer! Be open minded about roommates if you're living in the halls! BE FLEXIBLE!And remember to allow time for homework. Work first play later. Don't ever take Calc 1 from ScottAdams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome week does not give you a good first impression of the university. Get through one semester at theuniversity and then decide if you like it here and want to say.

You can't prepare for college by reading articles in magazines, on the internet, or listening to others stories, in away it will help you, but EVERYONE has a different first year college experience, it just depends how you chooseto handle it.

ALWAYS bring your keys with you wherever you go, can't tell you how many people have been locked out oftheir room because in the 3 minutes they were gone their room-mate left and locked the door!

Did not attend Welcome Week-Marching Band

GO GOPHERS!!!

I love college and I love the U!!

I think that the roommate match up and housing in general should be re-evaluated. 6 questions to determine whoyou will be living with for an entire year is not enough to make a sucessful match. How do you define do you goto be early? For me early means 9 pm but for my roommate it means midnight. More specific questions shouldbe asked to ensure a better matchup. Also it is very difficult to get out of your housing contract and I think thisshould be adjusted.

Love the university minus the cold! One thing though, CA's are annoying and should be more relaxed about theirjob. Many are really cool and I respect them, but others think they're saving the world...

no?

None

None at this time.

Nope.

Study more.

Thank you so much for making my transition from high school to college. The orientation leaders were reallyhelpful and reliable. You made my first year less stressful and I appreciate that. Thank you.

Welcome week is way too long and needs to be shortened. I ended up liking the university much less when I firstcame here and had no school pride because of welcome week.
