Newsletter – December 2017

There has been such a lot going on this term! With nativity productions, Christmas parties and even a German Christmas Market (not to mention just a sprinkling of carol singing), we hope that all our children have enjoyed this festive season and magical time of year.

We bid a fond farewell to Miss Eaglesfield who leaves us at Christmas. Miss Eaglesfield relocates to Humberside and begins a new chapter in her life. We wish her all the very best for the future and thank her for her hard work and commitment to her role over the past 3 years. Good luck Miss Eaglesfield.

We look forward to welcoming all our children and families back to Walter Evans in the New Year after a restful and peaceful Christmas. Thank you to all our children and staff for all their hard work over the course of this term and to our families for their continued support.

Merry Christmas.

Carol Concert at the Cathedral Thanks to all the children, parents, carers and grandparents who supported us at the Christmas Carol Concert on Wednesday 29th November. The children did an amazing job and sang a variety of carols beautifully for us all to enjoy. Thank you to Anne de Waal who has visited our school on numerous occasions recently to practice with the children and to Rev Barham who led our service and made it so enjoyable for us all.

Christmas Lunch

Our wonderful kitchen team cooked up a delicious Christmas lunch on Wednesday

13th December for our children, staff and governors to enjoy. A huge thank you to

Shelley, Rachel and Jas!

Nursery – Why do the leaves go crispy? In nursery we have been finding out about all things autumnal! To begin with, we all glittered, sparkled and shone during our bonfire and firework craft days. Then we read lots of brilliant stories about hibernating hedgehogs, helpful hedgehogs and hedgehogs called Harry! This inspired us to make our own hedgehogs and we are all really proud of our

hedgehog poem and paintings on display in school. As we approached our 'Wriggly Nativity' performance, we learnt lots of words and actions to some super-catchy songs. One of our favourite songs has to be 'Donkey Plodding' as we all love fine tuning our 'ee-or' donkey sound effects! We hope you are all now singing the

songs at home too! Thank you to all parents and carers who came to watch, we loved having an audience. Reception – We have had a fantastic half term and the children have been working really hard practising for the Christmas play, Whoops-A-Daisy Angel. They have done so well and we hope you agree they did a fantastic job performing it to you. We have been learning about Autumn and the children have been very enthusiastic in telling us about the changes they have seen. We rounded our year off with our trip to the National Adventure Farm to see Santa and all the lovely animals.

KS1 have really enjoyed our Dinosaur topic. We have been developing a deeper understanding of dinosaurs by looking at their habitats, the different ages they were from and different ideas about their extinction. We have finished off the topic by getting the children to present their knowledge to children from other year groups. A particular ‘wow’ moment was making a life size dinosaur out of cardboard boxes!

During December we enjoyed a mini topic of a German Christmas. We looked at German Christmas food, songs and traditions and compared them with our own Christmas traditions. We ended the topic by running a German Christmas market after school at St Matthews and at school.

This half term we have been working hard on our music topic ‘Playlist’. We have investigated how sound is made and looked at and played different instruments. We have been set the challenge by the end of it to create our own song! You never know the winning song may be put on our website so keep a look out! In English we have been looking at explanation texts and have had to describe Wallace and Gromit’s Snoozatron and also a ‘Teacher Pleaser Machine!’ It was a tough job! Next topic is Traders and Raiders so be careful when out and about- there may be an invasion!

Year 5 and 6 have really enjoyed our Frozen Kingdom topic, finding out about the polar regions of our planet. We have learnt about the differences between the Arctic and Antarctic, about food chains and how animals adapt to live in such harsh climates, and about human attempts to explore the most remote and dangerous environments on Earth. We have researched the epic adventure of the intrepid explorer Ernest Shackleton, and written in role as the expedition leader interviewing for the position of ship's cook.

Brickyard Wood in Radbourne became the Borreal Forest for our very own Artic expedition. The children worked in crews to pull sleds, construct a camp and light a fire for warmth and cooking: the essential elements of survival, especially in the Arctic! Next half term, we return to warmer (but equally dangerous!) climes, as we consider the impact that World War 2 had on the children of Britain and Europe.

On Friday 17th November, 10 Year 4 children travelled to a Benchball Festival, at the Tennis Centre in Normanton. The children experienced benchball for the first time where they played against teams across Derby City and thoroughly enjoyed trying a different sport.

Sainsbury’s Your School Games GOLD Kitemark

We are delighted to announce that, for the second year running,

we have been awarded the Gold Kitemark for KS2 school sports. Walter Evans

had to fulfil a range of criteria, some of which are listed below.

All children are provided with at least 2 hours of PE each week.

Extra-curricular sporting activities are provided – the number of extra-

curricular activities, both after school and at lunchtimes increased significantly

during 2016-2017.

Both boys and girls have the opportunity to take part in competitions against

other schools. Walter Evans participated in 12 different types of sports and

included ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams in a number of these sports. 100% of children in years

4-6 attended at least one festival or competition.

Children were provided with the opportunity to take part in inter-house and

class competitions; we held competitions in at least 11 different sports.

24% of KS2 pupils are engaged in leading, managing and officiating in School

Games activities - this includes house captains and mini-leaders.

We utilise sports coaches and have active links with external sports clubs.

Staff are mentored in the teaching of PE and attend inset and workshops on PE,

physical activity and school sport.

In addition to the above, our children take part in daily activity challenges and are

participants in local football and netball leagues, tournaments and cup matches.

Well done to all the staff, pupils, coaches and parents, who have helped to achieve this

award.

Christmas Presents

A lot of folk have Christmas present lists – do you? Recently I came across this interesting suggestion on somebody’s Christmas list: “Makeover Change from the inside out or the outside in!” Two weeks ago I had the opportunity of experiencing a spa day. All the treatments I received were so pleasurable, and my body felt so much better – mostly on the outside. Yet I knew they would only be temporary. Sure enough my posh nail varnish is already chipping off! My Christian experience and daily walk with the Lord shows me the importance of a makeover on the inside, where I can come to Jesus at any time and empty myself of those things that weigh me down; ask for his forgiveness, and be filled afresh with his reassurance, hope and encouragement. This I have found to be far more than temporary. “God can do anything you know- far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams. He does it by not pushing us around but by working within us deeply and gently by the Holy Spirit” Ephesians 3 v 20/21 Would you have this on your Christmas present list?
