I sincerely hope Punxsutawney Phil, Prognosticator of Prognosticators who awakened on Feb. 2, at 7:28 am, saw no shadow thus predicting an early spring, was right! I would love to nudge him awake on some other matters of import and get an equally encouraging response! This winter has been brutal, we actually saw frost repeatedly! Well Phil, we hope to see some sunshine and flowers in short order. Thanks to the great presentation done by Van Dyke Landscape Architects, we now have some wonderful plans to consider for landscape improvements! I was delighted to see the great turn out of residents and you will have another opportunity to see the presentation on March 1st at 10:30 am in Abravenal Hall. It will be broadcast live, but due to technical difficulties, we are

not able to consistently re-broadcast, so please try to attend.

I will be meeting with Cox Cable and the A/V team to look into how OHCC can improve the in house broadcast system in mid-February so stay tuned for more updates! The first round of street sweeping went off wonderfully with just a very few cars on the street. Remember to mark your calendar for the FIRST TUESDAY of the month to park off the street so the service can get all of the streets cleaned. The new rapid flashing beacon is up and running at the crosswalk by the clubhouse. Please slow down when you see the lights flashing to allow pedestrians to safely cross.

If you haven’t received your new decal for 2013, this project was to be completed by the end of February. We will be sending out follow up notices to Residents who have not received their new decal this month. Please contact the HOA Office if you have questions.

The budget mail out was just sent to you. Please remember to keep it in a safe place for future reference. If you have auto debit set up with PCM, the new amount of your assessment will be changed automatically. However, if you have a recurring payment set up with your bank or credit card to make the payment, please be sure to contact the entity before April 1st to change to the new assessment amount. You will find the dollar amount on the front page of the budget mail out. The Master Board was able to keep the dues increase for 2014 to just $2.00 per month. This does not include the increase, if any, from your local Village Board.

Please note there are several meeting dates you need to track if you like to attend Board meetings and keep abreast of what is going on. We have changed several dates and times so look for the meeting dates in the publication to keep as a handy reference.

I will be out of the office a few days to welcome a new granddaughter this month, Janey Rae! Be forewarned that if you make the mistake of asking, I will be only too happy to brag endlessly and show you photos to prove every word is absolutely true!!

On January 21 the Special Budget Meeting of the Master Board took place. There were only 8 Homeowners in attendance. The meeting was broadcast live. Due to ongoing problems with our in-house channel, we have not been able to rebroadcast the meeting. The $6,750,000 proposed Budget for 2013-2014 was reviewed line by line, questions and concerns of the Board of Directors and Members were addressed. Here are some of the highlights:

• The contracts with our two largest vendors, PCM Management and O’Connell Landscape Maintenance have not increased.

• The good news is that our insurance premiums have been reduced by $15,000 per year. The bad news is that due to the history of litigiousness of our Homeowners, the deductible, which we would be responsible to pay out in any settlement, is up to $25,000 per case!

• The Golf Course water usage, due to the new irrigation system and sensors, has decreased by $40,000, that is, from $200,000 to $160,000 per year. This calculation does include the 6% irrigation water increase that began on January 1, 2013.

• The Common Area water usage, on the other hand, is expected to stay the same. With the 6% irrigation water increase, the cost will go from $300,000 to $318,000 per year.

• The cost for bus transportation has decreased by $20,000 per year. Due to the lack of ridership, service was reduced by one day, and, in addition, we benefited financially by using a different bus service.

• We have signed a new janitorial contract, effective with the new fiscal year, due to Members’ complaints with regard to cleanliness in the Clubhouse. The number of hours will be increased from 8 to 12 and the janitorial staff from 2 to 3 persons. The cost increase is $10,000 per year or 50¢ per home, per month.

• Keeping allocations at the current level, the Reserves are 67% funded and will be 72% funded as of April 1, 2013.

• Prior year’s Surplus has been used to offset the increase in assessments.

• The monthly Master Association assessments have been increased as of April 1, 2013 by $2.00 per home.

On January 25, with communication and better understanding in mind, Homeowners were invited to join me, along with my fellow Board members, Barry Farrell and Don Lopez, over a cup of coffee and a sweet snack, to discuss Community issues at The Chat. There were over 50 people, who attended. Discussed were such topics as Cox

Bulk TV costs, name change of the Disciplinary Hearing Committee, our Citation Policy, and the behavior of CPS officers. The Master Board and our General Manager have taken all comments seriously and are taking action where necessary.

January 17 was the 1st annual Standing Committee Members Appreciation Luncheon where outgoing committee members were honored and January 31 was the 2nd annual Standing Committee Members Orientation where incoming committee members were welcomed. The Board is grateful and appreciative for the fine volunteer work done by Standing Committee Members. Their efforts and expertise greatly assist the Board in accomplishing the many projects that face us each year.

At our February 7 Executive Session, we held two hearings, a personnel issue, discussed legal opinion on 3 issues and a possible litigation issue, and reviewed third party contracts. The Board decided to engage our Landscape Architects, Van Dyke, to evaluate the Cannon Road Project as it relates to the existing ground cover.

The February 7 Special Meeting with a single agenda item: the Front Entry preliminary Landscape Proposals by Van Dyke Landscape Architects, were well received. There were almost 300 attendees and the feedback from Homeowners was very favorable to Van Dyke’s offerings.

We are pleased to announce that on March 1, at the Regular Landscape Committee meeting, you will have another opportunity to experience the Van Dyke Landscape Presentation and give your feedback. The meeting will be in Abravanel Hall beginning at 10:30 a.m. A flyer will be distributed to all mail tubes to remind you.

In early March, you will also receive a brief SURVEY asking your opinion with regard to the suggested Front Entry landscaping. At the April 5 Regular Landscape Committee meeting, the Landscape Committee members will use the feedback given by Homeowners to formulate a recommendation to the Master Board. The tentative date for the Special Master Board Meeting with the Landscape Committee Recommendation is April 15. It is possible that this date will be postponed. All Members will be apprised of the Special Meeting via a flyer in their mail tubes.

An Executive Session was held on February 15, prior to the Regular Board Meeting. We had two hearings; discussed third party contracts including the mandate with Van Dyke Landscape Architects to evaluate the Cannon Road Project; and approved minutes of prior Executive Sessions.

At the Regular February Master Board meeting that followed, a one session meeting, we dealt with the following agenda items: A Landscape Committee Recommendation, on Homeowner-generated Tree requests, which was approved; review of our Priority List; a change of the Date of Record for Homeowners eligible to receive ballots for the upcoming CC&R amendments to March 1, 2013; the final due date to receive ballots of April 24, 2013 at 5 pm; the setting of the meeting for ballot tabulation on April 25, 2013; acceptance of the resignation of Colleen McCall, an Inspector of Election (due to vacation), and appointment of her replacement, Marcia Saltzman; a revised proposal on the pool tables requesting purchase of a total of 7 tables (5 were already approved at the January Regular Board meeting), which was not approved; cleaning the tile floors and coloring the grout including the polishing of the inlaid marble area in the Clubhouse, with a preliminary test first, from Coit Services at a cost not to exceed $7,900.00; repair of

Landscape Committee ReportBy Linda Strohm, Chairperson

The February Special Meeting of the Master Board with a single agenda item, Landscaping, was attended by almost 250 residents! What a wonderful turnout to hear Van Dyke Landscape Architects present the three preliminary designs for the front gate to the front door of the Clubhouse. Each of the designs was unique and yet all reflected the overall opinion of the majority of the homeowners that we want to maintain the “Country Club” feel and look of our community. Design A focused on the rejuvenation of the existing landscape with color sprinkled throughout. It is eclectic and informal with shrubs layered for texture and banded for continuity. Design B has a “Resort Casual” look that develops a rhythm in the existing landscape with color groupings. It is more serene with repetitive informality. Design C is “Resort Tropical” that is symmetrical, lush, high color and formal. It is linear in character with a variety of materials and possible water features. Each design has something for everyone! Your comments were heard at the meeting and will be taken into consideration as we move toward the final design phase. The final design will incorporate a little of each of the preliminary designs.

At the meeting there were several comments about the use of reclaimed water. The availability of reclaimed water is, apparently, in the not-too-distant future. But it will not happen tomorrow, or even next year. Just the infrastructure to possibly

bring it to our Community will take time and money. The City of Oceanside is working with the City of Carlsbad to explore the details of such a project, but it is a complicated undertaking, with many laws, ordinances and regulations that govern its use. There have also been questions about desalinated water. Many of the same rules and infrastructure issues apply to its use. OHCC is one of the larger users of irrigation water in Oceanside, and we are working very closely with the City of Oceanside to ensure that when alternate sources of irrigation water become available, we will be offered such an opportunity. Money for not only landscape renovations but also for badly needed irrigation renovations is being set aside in our Reserve funds.

In the mean time, we still need to explore ways that will help us reduce the use of irrigation water, while maintaining the overall ambience of our landscaping. Van Dyke Landscape Architects is doing an excellent job in helping us make the right decisions to achieve that goal.

Safety CornerBy Leonard Weinstein,Director of Community Patrol Service (CPS)

Hello residents of Ocean Hills Country Club.It seems that questions regarding the Emergency

Monitoring Systems (EMS) in our homes and the Reverse 9-1-1 system will be never ending. However, the question never asked may lead to confusion and/or misinformation so please continue to inquire. Recently, it was stated that should you have only a cell phone and not a land line telephone you would not be able to receive Reverse 9-1-1 notifications from Alert San Diego, the system by which both the City of Oceanside and San Diego County send public alert system and emergency notification messages. Some months ago, this subject was reviewed both in Village Board Meetings, in this article and in new resident orientations. Besides these notifications being sent via your telephone land line, you may register both your cell phone and your internet based telephone numbers by completing an Oceanside Police Department 9-1-1 Communications form, available at the HOA office, or by going online to www.readysandiego.org/alertsnadiego/

Last month, I mentioned keeping your cell phone with you when you are out and about. There was recently an article, on the internet, dealing with keeping your phone charged in a power outage. Some of the ideas are easily

adopted by any of us. There are battery backup chargers available for some phones; check with your network provider or cell phone manufacturer. A power inverter (check with a computer store) can be used to convert DC power, from your vehicle battery, to AC juice for things usually plugged into a wall outlet. How about this one; use your laptop as a back-up generator. It’s so obvious once one thinks about it. Keep your laptop battery fully charged; you can plug your cell phone, or your tablet for that matter, into the laptop via a USB port.

As spring approaches, it will be a welcomed sight as the sun comes up earlier and it is lighter at the end of the day. This month the Recreation Department sponsors the Annual Spring Eggstravaganza on Saturday, March 30. The department has ordered over three-thousand eggs, as the children have multiplied over the years. Cox Communications is a co-sponsor with us and we greatly appreciate their contribution to this event. We will be featuring “The Spellman Magic Spectacular” at 10:30 am, egg hunts for all ages and we are bringing back a couple of Bouncy Houses to add to the festivities. Hip Hop the Bunny will make an appearance. Refreshments will be provided on the Lanai.

The Dog Park will be finally open on March 1st. The weather did not permit the germinating of the seed as quickly as expected. The CSC is now looking at alternative turf samples with a newly formed sub-committee to develop a plan that will look into improving the conditions of the grass during high usage and inclement weather. The sub-committee will be coming before the CSC and proposing their plan in the months ahead.

Residents have asked about having another Shred Day and that is in the planning in the not too distant future. Look for an announcement of the date in the April Newsletter. The last time the event was held in the overflow parking lot the response was favorable. Each household was able to drop off two boxes of paperwork for disposal. Be assured it is in the plans, stay tuned.

Phone Directories are still available at the Front Desk in the Clubhouse with one per household. Also, remember about the Lost and Found at the Front Desk, items come to us from all over the Village. Residents who lose/find wet items in the pool areas are encouraged to place them in the Locker Room Lockers until the rightful owner comes a ‘calling.

This month the clubs will be holding their events with a Saint Patrick’s Day theme, which is celebrated by Irish Americans nationwide. One St. Patrick myth is the claim that he banished snakes from Ireland. It’s true no snakes exist on the island today, Freeman said—but they never did. Ireland, after all, is surrounded by icy ocean waters—much too cold to allow snakes to migrate from Britain or anywhere else. Erin go brauh! Come join us for fun in the Clubhouse!

OHCC Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

PREPARING FOR A DISASTERWhat will you do? What resources do you have? What

is your emergency plan? What will you do if your usual resources are not

available? No one knows when a disaster will happen or how

extensive it will be. What if the community services we have come to expect are disrupted for some time? Knowing what to do in an emergency can make the difference between success and failure. Everyone’s needs are unique. Develop an emergency plan that is specific to your needs and review it regularly.

Make a list of emergency contacts and how to reach them. List family members, friends or others who will be part of your plan. Who will have a key to your home? Where are your emergency supplies and any important documents that need to be saved? If you need assistance to evacuate, what will you do? Talk to your medical or therapy provider about what to do if the need arises.

Be prepared to be on our own for three days, possibly longer. Make a list of all medications and dosages. Do any of them require refrigeration? Have a week’s supply of medications on hand. Copies of your prescriptions can help in getting refills from a different source, if necessary. If you wear a hearing-aid, have extra batteries for one week on hand. Have an extra pair of eyeglasses available. Do you use oxygen? Will you have an emergency tank available? CERT will not have oxygen or generator available.

Keep a VIAL of LIFE form on your refrigerator or next to your phone that lists medications, medical information, allergies, Doctors, and insurance information. These important forms must be kept up to date. Plan to check them every few months to make sure the information is current. If you need additional forms, contact the County Health and Human Services Agency (1-800-510-2020) or Tri-City Hospital Foundation (760-940-3370).

In the event of a disaster or major emergency, OHCC CERT will be activated. This group of resident volunteers consists of four teams (three Tactical Teams and a Medical Team) with radio communications to our own Command Post and from there, to the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Our mission is to assist as many people as possible with the number of volunteers available, and until community services or alternate resources are available.

How well we survive a disaster, will reflect how well we prepared. It is imperative that every homeowner develop a survival plan customized to their particular needs, and includes basic supplies (listed below) to last 3 or more days. Be ready to shelter-in-place (as long as your home is safe) but also have a “go” bag prepared with food and supplies just in case you must evacuate.

Regularly reviewing your emergency plan and making changes as necessary will make it easier to cope with the

• First-aid kit - include supplies for any special needs (a back-pack is handy)

• Whistle - to call for help• Battery-powered radio (extra batteries); or solar-

powered hand-crank radio• Dust masks - to help filter contaminated air (can also

The Billiards Club Mixed 8-Ball Tournament was held at the end of January. “Mixed” means a team of one A player (expert) and one B player (pretty darn good). Danny-Joe Burton and Bob Rosenquist took first place, and get their names engraved forever on the Club’s hal-lowed walls. They narrowly defeated John Prieskorn and Jeanne Marks, who finished second. Their names will be remembered forever also, but not actually engraved anywhere.

Everyone at OHCC is welcome to grab a schedule of events from the bureau in the Billiards Room, on the right as you enter. Look it over, and come on in to watch anything that looks interesting. Play a few games too – you do not need to be a member to play, and the Billiards Room is open whenever the Clubhouse is open.

New tables? Maybe. More on that next month.

BIRDWATCHERS CLUBThe meeting this month will be TUESDAY,

MARCH 26, at 1 pm, in the Ladies Club Room. Light refreshments will be available at 12:30 pm. The program will be an interesting video entitled My Life as a Turkey. This is a beautiful, charming, funny, sad, and thought provoking film exploring one of those rare mo-ments when man and animal unwittingly become closely linked. The star of the story, Joe Hutto, had a longing to learn about the secret world of Wild turkeys by hav-ing young turkey poults imprint on him. Day after day, for over a year, he lived as a turkey mother, taking on the full-time job of raising 16 turkey chicks. He learned their language and their ways. Join us for this unique story.

The bird walk this month will be TUESDAY, MARCH 12, to Lake Wohlford in Escondido. Meet at the overflow by 7:45 am to receive directions and form carpools. DEPAR-TURE IS 8 am. Note that the only restroom facility at the walk site is a portable toilet. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a pole if you use one. Also bring water, hat, bin-oculars, and field guide if you have one, money for lunch and optional gas money for the driver. After the walk, we

will have lunch at Smokey’s Lake Wohlford Café, home of the famous “all you can eat” catfish dinner.

Lake Wohlford was Escondido’s first reservoir; with the dam completed in 1895. Water was brought to it from the Escondido Canal, which diverted flow from the San Luis Rey River Basin. While the 190-acre lake was originally called the Bear Valley Reservoir, the name was changed in 1924 to honor Alvin Wohlford who died that year. Wohlford was an engineer who created the wa-ter supply system that resulted in the canal and lake. He was also the founder of the Bank of Escondido and his descendants continue to contribute to Escondido to-day. Rental boats are available for fishing, but private boats are currently banned due to the influx of invasive Quagga mussels. The Lake is stocked with rainbow trout, largemouth bass and catfish while black crappie and bluegill are also caught here. Dogs are not permitted.

How can members enhance their birding skills? Come to our March meeting for some helpful hints on locating birds. The joy of finding a new, interesting, or beautiful bird increases when you share it with others. But you can’t share the joy if you can’t help others find the bird. Binoculars are useful tool because birds are too small to see identifying marks and color with the naked eye. Having a field guide helps to reinforce what was seen regarding size, shape, color, beak structure, etc., from a picture that can be studied at a later time and reinforce what was seen with the binoculars. Repetition is your key to success.

Not sure Birdwatchers Club is for you? Come to a meeting or join us on a bird walk. Join at any time for $8 by leaving a check at the Front Desk in the Birdwatchers envelope.

BOCCEGreetings boys and girls! I must apologize

for having neglected you last month, our com-puter is not working properly and I could not meet my deadline.

The weather is far from perfect and I assume that is the reason our attendance is down. It couldn’t be any other reason so we will forge ahead and hope that it warms up shortly.

The year 2012 ended on a high note with a lovely party and all of our new officers properly installed. Gail Muscioscia is our new president, enabled by Don Samp-sel, our vice president (Don has been there before so he is qualified to give advice). Sally Booth is still secretary and Craig Powers is our new Treasurer. The Bocce King was not able to attend but Bill Curtin was duly crowned and Virginia Sackett was named queen. A wonderful time was had by all and we all made it home in one piece.

Our first tournament of the year was held on January 23. There was a tournament discussed for shuffleboard but there didn’t seem to be enough people interested so we will see if we can’t stir up some interest in learning the game.

Bocces for January were as follows: 5 bocces - Bill Cur-tin; 2 Bocces – Marion Ellman, Susie Kopolow, Bob Sack-ett, Darryl Vincent; 1 Bocce for Joe Allen, Teri Amighi, Bill Baker, Gordon Bishop, Barbara Miller, Forrest New-berg, Craig Powers, Janet Powlowski, George Ruehle, Virginia Sackett, Don Sampsel and William Sernesi. Congratulations to all!

The bridge game has been reorganized. There are now two sections, newer players and experienced play-ers. You can play in the section you desire. Free lessons are available on Wednesday mornings at 10 am with Ken, discussing bridge hands from the newspaper, and at 10:30 am with Donna for beginners and Nancy for in-termediate. Following is an hour of free practice play.

Bridge is not only fun, it can help to keep our minds sharp and active. The fee for playing is only $3 to help pay for the Director, and replace worn out supplies.

If you want to share your birthday, contact Max or Joan Blumeyer at 760-758-3726 to arrange any setup, coffee, etc. In February, Joan celebrated her birthday with several varieties of delicious homemade cookies. In March, Nancy Read will bring munchies and dips.

CAN-DO CLUBIt’s FOLLIES! Time!

Have you marked your calendar yet for the biggest one-night-only-event featuring our very own talented and game neighbors? If not, do so now. It’s April 5, a Friday night, an event which promises to be the talk of the town on Saturday!

Clubs and Activities

If we haven’t heard from you and you want to perform in the upcoming production of OH, Follies! you may be too late. Call Producer/Director Kate Butler immediate-ly at 760-295-9865 if she doesn’t already have you on the list.

Here’s the latest missive from Kate about this upcom-ing talent show: By the time you read this we will have our acts somewhat in order. It’s never too late, however, to support this annual fundraiser by working backstage during the show, selling tickets, ushering or doing a myr-iad of other things, including application of makeup and doing hairstyles for the performers. Also, someone has to pull the curtain and help design and build the sets! This show is set in Las Vegas, so all styling should be big and bold!

And it doesn’t matter if you’ve never done the thing for which you volunteer, for we firmly believe that we are in a time of our lives for trying new things. And we have plenty of experienced folks to bring you up to speed.

The proceeds from this year’s annual talent show (which is actually an original play handcrafted by the very talented Lyn Asaro, whose storyline is brilliantly created around the talents of our neighbors) are ear-marked for OHSPA (the Ocean Hills Society for the Per-forming Arts) and CERT (the Community Emergency Response Team), so we need as many helpers as we can get to keep costs down.

Do let us know if you have any big wigs, feather boas, gigantic headdresses or anything else lying about that we might borrow to help set the Vegas-y stage. A Zoot Suit would be nice, BTW. E-mail me at [email protected] or phone me (see above) to let me know what you’ve got and are willing to lend and I’ll put you in touch with the person handling costumes, props and/or sets. You should know that we’re pretty good at returning all bor-rowed items in original shape, and take our responsibili-ties seriously. Thank you in advance for contributing to our “rilly big shoe”!

Tickets go on sale at the Concierge Desk on March 19. Sales hours are 10 am to 1 pm every Tuesday, Wednes-

day and Thursday until the show on April 5.See you there!

CHORALEHey everybody…we are singing again!

What a joy it is to get together with all of our friends to sing and have lots of fun! Our upcoming concert on May 19 at 2 pm is going to be a blast from the past. I will bet you can Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive that I’ll be Seeing You at this concert when we Play a Simple Melody…did you get it? As Time Goes By, I am sure you will…by the time it is over, you will say Thanks for the Memory of an era gone by.

All kidding aside, this USO show is dear to our hearts; we love these old songs and cannot wait to share them with you. If you would like to sing with us, it is still early enough in the rehearsals for you to join. We rehearse on Thursday mornings from 10 am to 12 pm in the Men’s Club Room and we have optional section rehearsals on Tuesday mornings for a half hour between 10 am and 12 pm. If you have any questions, please call Donna Russell at 760-945-5558 or Diane LaLonde at 760-917-4578.

WEEKEND FILMS: All films are shown in the Club-house Ladies Club Room every Friday, Saturday and Sunday unless exempted by a priority event or holiday. Show times are at 2:30 pm, 5 pm and 7:30 pm unless the film is over 2 hours and 20 minutes in length. When this occurs, the 5 pm show will be omitted.

Miserables” (76); “Killing Them Softly” (70) and “Hitch-cock” (67).

The numbers appearing after the above film titles represent the combined average critical and popular rat-ing on a scale of 0 to 100 as published by Rotten Toma-toes.com and IMDB.com. A rating between 60 and 100 signifies the highest rated films. Please also check the Coming Attractions Bulletin Board posted outside the Men’s Club Room for reserved films that are in circula-tion but are not yet available in DVD.

MIDWEEK FILMS: A contemporary Foreign Film is shown every Wednesday at 7 pm (one show only). This is in addition to those shown on alternating Fridays (three shows). MUSICAL FINE ARTS: The Musical Fine Arts Group is next scheduled to meet on Saturday, March 2 at 10 am when two great piano concertos, Brahms’ #2 and Beethoven’s #3, as performed by Maurizio Pollini will be featured.

If you are interested in joining either the Foreign Film Classic or Musical Fine Arts Groups or in just oc-casionally attending one of the programs, please contact the writer since seating is limited. Becoming a member would entitle you to automatically receive a monthly in-vitation and an annual program.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you were at the Clubhouse on Due Dues Day, January 5 and signed up to join the Musical Fine Arts Group, please contact me immedi-ately especially if you have yet to receive an invitation to attend. The Sign-Up sheet disappeared and I would like to know who you are. Frank Petronella 760 414-9070 [email protected]

GARDEN CLUBThe monthly Garden Club meeting will be

held on Wednesday, March 13, in Abravanel Hall. At 9:30 am refreshments will be served and at 10am the pro-gram and meeting begins.

If you have not paid your Garden Club dues, you are welcome to leave a $10 check at the Clubhouse Front Desk or bring it to the monthly meeting. The Garden Club Bulletin delivered in February will be your last one until dues are paid.

You’ll want to mark your calendar for the 2013 Gar-den Tour and Spring Luncheon that will be held on Sat-urday, May 8. The tour will be held from 10 am to noon followed by lunch on the Lanai. Tickets will go on sale at the April 10 meeting. Would you like your garden to be part of the tour? If you are interested, please call Else Offersen at 760-477-7370.

The speaker for the March meeting will be Linda Strohm who has been Chair of the OHCC Landscape Committee since June 2012. The primary focus of this committee is the landscaping of the common areas of our community. Linda and the Landscape Committee mem-bers have been busy with many projects. One important

project has been to work with Van Dyke Landscape Ar-chitect on the designs for the main entry to OHCC. At the Garden Club meeting Linda will share the process of developing those designs. She will review what has been done and what is still to come during her informative talk about Common Area Landscape at OHCC.

Linda Strom has lived in OHCC for almost ten years. She is an active member of the Computer Club and the Garden Club. She was President of the Garden Club from 2009 to 2011. In the past, Linda coordinated the publication of the monthly Garden Club Bulletin and has graciously accepted that position again.

On March 17, many people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Legends tell us that Saint Patrick used the sham-rock as a teaching tool while preaching in Ireland. Last March I wondered could the three-leaved green plants growing heartily in my yard be shamrocks? The mys-tery was solved when a friend who grew up in Austra-lia came to visit. Upon entering the yard, she exclaimed with delight “Sour Sobs.” She explained that the green plants with the lovely yellow flowers in my yard were the same weeds that covered the meadows surrounding her childhood home. As a little girl she and her playmates would pick the yellow flowers and pop the stems in their mouths and then shudder at the tart flavor. She could not explain why they played this game.

As children did we need a reason to climb the big tree in the backyard or swing from a limb? Why did we pick a handful of dandelions and take them home to a loved one? Did we need a reason to roll in the grass? What memories come to mind when you look in your garden? What Sour Sobs stories can you recall?

GARDENING NEWS by Melvina TerryYou can continue in March with the spring “tonic”

or start a fertilizer program if you didn’t do so in Febru-ary. Do not fertilize native plants, cacti or succulents.

If you are going along with me, you should be ready for your second treatment of systemic. Feed container plants with half-strength fertilizer (half as much, twice as often). Your orchids are always hungry, so use a bal-anced fertilizer at least once a month from now until fall. Water when plants are becoming dry. Drip irrigation is ideal for watering plants efficiently in our dry climate. Drip systems are inexpensive and easy to install. The best time to install a drip system is now, before you start to replenish your garden. It is time to prune hibiscus, ceanothus and pinch off the tips of fuchsia. Do not prune off the leaves of bulbs as they finish flowering. They need those leaves to produce the energy for next year’s flowers. If the yellowing leaves are unsightly, braid or tie them down and over plant with lobelia or other annuals.

Control snails and slugs by baiting every ten days. There are new baits on the market that will not harm people or pets. Look for products such as Sluggo or Es-car-Go. You can also conduct a nightly snail patrol. Throw them into a plastic bag with a small amount of salt in the bottom. When they hit the salt, their bodies will froth up and it’s off to pest heaven. However, if you bait, remem-ber to gather the dead snails as they will attract ants.

Spray aphids and white fly with a sharp burst of water.Over the last year or more, I have been trying to cut

down on the gardening shores, so there will be no to-matoes in my yard this year. Instead, I have planted my vegetable spot with an iris bed. Irises establish a shal-low rightly knit root system that keeps the weeds down. I read somewhere that irises of various types have a bloom period of over six months. Irises come in seen ba-sic groups. As a child, the only irises I knew were called flags. However, the following are also of the iris family: small bulbous, juno, xiphium, onocyclus, herbaceous and bearded. I am testing to see if the six month theory is true. In January, a beautiful bearded iris bloomed and lasted six weeks. It is much too early for bearded iris but it must be one of the new ones I purchased that said it bloomed twice a year. In February, my xiphium bloomed. In March my Dutch iris will start to bloom. I will keep you posted. You may like to try an iris bed yourself next year.

GOLF CLUBI’m going on vacation and almost forgot

to write this article. However, thanks to Sandy Fiore in the Clubhouse office, who reminds us when necessary, things get done.

The Herb Stark annual tournament will be starting the week of March 25. Sign up will be from March 4 to March 19, and thanks to the generosity of Wes and Renee Kelson prizes will remain at past levels. As usual, the event will be ably run by Joe Newmyer, assisted by Jim Piercy and Tom Vetlesen. Participants will arrange their own foursomes this year. There will be four flights and it will last four or five weeks. Please leave your name, phone number and $5 in the casa door.

Guys and Dolls will be held on Saturday, March 16, names and $8 should be in the casa door by March 9.

The first Touring Armatures will be held March 25 at Oaks North. This is an extended executive course. The cost for walkers is $26 and riders $36. Money should be at the Demarest’s by March 19.

Happy golfing everyone.

HELPING HANDSHelping Hands is an Ocean Hills volunteer

group that maintains an inventory of wheelchairs, walk-ers, canes, crutches and miscellanies medical equipment to help those in need. The equipment is available to all Ocean Hills residents without a charge. We also accept donations of the above items that you no longer need. We need additional wheelchairs now. Our inventory is low.

We want to thank Steve Malone for serving as Presi-dent of Helping Hands for the past few years. Your help was appreciated by a number of Ocean Hills Country Club residences.

The following volunteers are available to assist resi-dents with pickup and delivery when there is an in home need for medical equipment: Jack Collar at 760-598-0580; Larry Bowers at 760-639-1989; Tim Wilbur at 760-639-5221 and President, Dan Mathews at 760-724-2744.

KENNEL KLUBPlease save the date of Thursday, May 23.

The VILLAGE VETS and KENNEL KLUB are sponsoring a presentation of FREEDOM DOGS.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury are the signature injuries of military personnel returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The pairing of wounded military and FREEDOM DOGS speeds recovery and enhances lives.

FREEDOM DOGS complete a two-year program of special training before being teamed up with a Wounded Warrior. You won’t want to miss this presentation and the chance to meet these wonderful dogs.

At the SD Humane Society, just 4% of cats and 35% of dogs are reclaimed by their owners when they get lost. Most of those returned are thanks to a license, pet tag, or microchip.

For 2013, the Kennel Klub board is asking residents of OHCC to implement the following: (1) keep your pet information up-to-date on your annual vehicle registra-tion, (2) keep a collar on your pet with your name and phone number, (3) get your dog licensed with the Hu-mane Society ($40 for three years if dog is altered), (4) have your pet micro-chipped, (5) always walk your dog on a leash that is no more than 6 feet and (6) join our club.

brary I really hadn’t had time to give it a thorough pe-rusal. So l took the time to take a good look around and I must compliment all those who had a hand in refurbish-ing and redecorating it. I’m sure that everyone using the library will feel the same.

We welcome all of our new members and hope that you’ll come in during library hours. Just say hello and let us point out the various sections and shelves in the library. We have close to a thousand books now - most purchased with your dues - some donated by residents. Just recently these books were donated. By title and au-thor they are:

can be found on the reserve shelf and are available to all members. Just look for the pink dots. And twenty new books are purchased each month.

So to everyone who enjoys the library and its new am-biance; to use it to find something you want to read or to just sit by the fire and daydream; you may find me there as well, occasionally doing the same or working behind the counter. Just say hello. I’ll be happy to meet you.

But I’m sorry to say that someone else will be writing these lines from now on. I’ll take over some other posi-tion as soon as one is available. It’s been great talking to you... Florence Hayos, Librarian.

PA concert of the year! Direct from Las Vegas comes the sensational and highly-successful production: OH WHAT A NIGHT! They will be performing in Abravanel Hall on March 16 at 7:30 pm. This is sure to be a sellout per-formance so please check with the Front Desk to see if there are any tickets available. Tickets are $25 each and heavily subsidized by OHSPA. What is Oh What a Night? This is a tribute to FRANKIE VALLI & THE FOUR SEA-SONS. Who does not remember “those boys from Jer-sey”? It is an exciting musical revue with songs such as: Sherry, Walk Like A Man, Big Girls Don’t Cry, and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. These are just some of the many hits you will enjoy from the dynamic songbook of those boys from Jersey. I promise that you will be tapping your feet and singing along! The personable cast stays true to the original recordings. This exhilarating musical revue has been thrilling audiences with great choreography, boundless energy, humor and, of course, instantly rec-ognizable classic pop songs that have become timeless.

magnificent music and breathtaking performances. This is another top-flight show from OHSPA subsidized for only $25 a ticket. Unless you are a Star Donor, get in line early on the 26th of March to get your tickets!

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUBThere will be no meeting of the Photogra-

phy Club this month, March. The Club will be going on a photo field trip to the Safari Park (formerly Wild Animal Park) in Escondido. The date is tentatively set for Thurs-day, March 21. We will meet in the Clubhouse overflow parking lot early Thursday morning, organize carpools, and then travel to the Park. Details will be published later. In the April meeting the Club will present a slide show review of a number of photos comprised of some of the better images selected by each individual photog-rapher. Park entrance fees are significant, so consider becoming a member of the Zoological Society of San Di-ego. Membership costs are $114 (dual), $94 (single), and $156 (Diamond level). A small number of one-day guest passes may be available from current members, who are encouraged to donate guest passes for this trip.

Because of the present scheduling of this photo shoot, there will not be a digital photography workshop in the Computer Lab on Thursday, March 21, 3 to 5 pm. If you would like help with your camera and the computer/scanner/printer, please make an appointment with Bud DeMaris at 760-630-1739 for a session in the Lab when it is available.

RACQUET CLUB The date of our “Third Annual Pickleball

Scramble” had to be rescheduled to Thursday, March 7, due to lack of availability of the kitchen and Palm Court. But it is sure to be a well-attended tournament, since pickleball remains the most popular sport of the Rac-quet Club. Roberta Peters and Dannica Wood will run the event this year, and with the help of many volun-teers, promise that the competition will be sharp and the luncheon delicious!

Instruction for beginning and novice pickleball was held at the HOA courts on Saturday, February 23, un-der the direction of Mike Hoggatt and Herb Livsey. The March class will be held on March 30, again at the HOA courts.

Steve Knapp held both a tennis clinic and a pickle-ball clinic during the first week of February. Each clinic was attended by about eight intermediate players who benefited from Steve’s expertise in leading drills to im-prove their game. Thank you Steve for teaching, and Glo-ria for being our favorite ball girl!

If you happen to pass by the Mykonos Room on

Wednesdays and Fridays between 3 pm and 4:30 pm, you probably have wondered about all the laughing and shrieking going on in there. Well, let it be known that the afternoon sessions of “Ladies’ table tennis” are alive and well. The numbers had been shrinking, so a cam-paign to get us back up to healthy numbers ensued, and you only have to peek through the windows to see that the ladies are back. And we are not done yet! The Rac-quet Club will sponsor an Open House on Friday, March 15, with

St. Patrick’s Day being our theme. Meaning what, exactly? Why, the wearing of the green of course! Play will take place from 3 pm to 4 pm and then space will be cleared for refreshments, and seating for spectators for our “exhibition match.” Monica Harris is putting to-gether a team from some exceptional players who will demonstrate their skills for us. We want to encourage all women, even those who last held a ping pong paddle playing with their grandchildren, to come on out and take a look. We think you may want to join the fun!

If you need further information about the Racquet Club, go to our website at www.ohccracquetclub.com. And don’t forget to bookmark our drop-in schedule! Then just a click will let you know when your next Rac-quet Club event is scheduled!

SAILING CLUBAn overflow crowd of more than 70 attend-

ed the February meeting of the Sailing Club, and after enjoying delicious snacks provided by Barbara Hazlett and Gloria Maupin, and beverages served by sommelier Jack Morgan, plans were discussed for the coming year. Commodore Bob Kopolow asked for a show of interest in a whale watching trip this spring and a possible cruise to either Mexico or Alaska later in the year. As there was a show of interest in both, the club will pursue these activities. Vice Commodore Allan Paloutzian informed the Club of plans for the summer party in June and the Holiday Party on December 14, and asked for volunteers to help organize them. The Sailing Club has the lead for the Holiday Party this year, which will be a joint effort with the Racquet Club. Despite the long lead time, the Holiday party is the more critical because both caterers and entertainers are so busy at that time of year. Any-one interested in helping out should contact Allan. Fol-lowing the business meeting, the Club was entertained by Joan Gast, who humorously described a sail she and her husband took in the 1970s from Annapolis, MD to San Diego, via the West Indies, Venezuela and the Pan-ama Canal, on a 42’ sailboat once owned by the King of Sweden.

Even though it’s winter, day sails on Catalina 29s will continue, whenever there is enough interest. At the Feb-

ruary meeting Commodore Kopolow announced that he was planning to take a boat out on Wednesday, February 27 if he could fill the boat and he got enough sign-ups to fill that boat and a second boat. The weather in San Diego can be quite pleasant in late February, and this is the time of year you might be able to see migrating whales. Sign up on the “I want to sail” list in the Sailing Club folder at the Clubhouse Front Desk, indicating the day of the week preferred, if you’d like to join us on a future sail.

Interested in learning more about this fun Club and its activities? The Club meets the first Tuesday of each month, with refreshments at 7 pm and the business meeting beginning at 7:30 pm. See us at the next meet-ing on March 5.

SEWING, ETC We had a busy February meeting with

a couple of our new members attending. Shannon has photos online of the items at show and tell--quilts, scarf and completed mug buckets. She also took a picture of the group listening to Dawn explain Bargello. We look very serious; from the picture you might think that we expected a test on the subject! The quilt styles were in-teresting. We had hand quilted, hand appliqued, pieced, table topper size to king size and all the colors of the rainbow. Again it is interesting to see creativity at work; Sharon made an appliqued San Diego quilt but changed the placement and some of the pictures which made it completely different from any others done from the pat-tern. Elaine (who does not know how to knit) made and modeled for us one of the ruffled “knitted” scarves. I wonder how many scarves members made; it was one of our most popular projects.

The cradle quilts are off to a good start. The batting and pillow forms were cut for 100 quilt sets. Thursday, March 21 is the next day we will get together to work on the quilts. Also scheduled for March, Thursday the 28th, is a dog chew toy. It looks like a simple project and is braided rather than sewn. Karen brought one for Show and Tell in June 2012. You can check it out on the web-site by first scrolling down to ARCHIVES at the bottom, then click on 2012 and June. You don’t need to have a dog to make the toy; Kathy is checking with the Humane Society to see if this is something they would like. As for me, I have already thought of 4 dogs that I would like to give toys, so I hope it is really easy to make.

As always, paper copies of Shannon’s monthly sched-ule are in the Sewing Room on the counter. The website - www.ohccsewingclub.com - also has the newsletter. Pic-tures of members, Show and Tell, and workshops are all available on the website.

SWIM CLUBSwim Club meeting this month! We will

meet on Thursday, March 28 at 4 pm. Our meeting day has changed to Thursday. Weather permitting we will meet outside. The Meeting Schedule for the remainder of 2013 is as follows:

March 28 - Thursday at 4 pm May 23 - Thursday at 4 pm August 22 - Thursday at 4 pm October 24 - Thursday at 4 pm The Swim Club is scouting for a few good helpers. We

need a refreshment committee to help produce a great social hour with food and drink after every meeting. This is not a big job. It is fun and the Swim Club pays for it! Bring your ideas for food and entertainment. It is not too early to start planning for our June 15 Lanai Party and let’s think ahead for the Holiday Party on December 1. Contact Vice President Jeff Carpenter or [email protected].

Thanks to Harriett McCawley and Jeff Carpenter for hosting our January social. Over sixty members attend-ed the first meeting of the year. We all enjoyed a terrific salad bar and pizza from Flippin Pizza. Many thanks also to Sally Dounias, Delivery Chair, for delivering all of the flyers for the January meeting.

Sally needs occasional help! Her delivery people have moved on. Do you have a golf cart? Will you deliver meeting or party flyers in your village? Call Sally Dou-nias; let her know she can count on you.

A Swim Club Historian is needed. This is a really nice job that you can do in the comfort of your own home. Maintain and collect photos, minutes, articles, publicity, etc., in an album. The album is already established. Just take over and add to it.

Rita Schneider has graciously volunteered to hostess the March 28 social hour.

Remember this is your Club and we need help! To vol-unteer for any of the above opportunities contact Robin Ryan or Jeff Carpenter, or email [email protected].

See you at the pool rain or shine.

THEATRE ARTSThanks again to all returning and new The-

atre Arts members! We look forward to an exciting year!FEBRUARYOur February meeting featured a performance by co-

medienne, Anita Milner. We all enjoyed hearing about the antics of her grandson, and could relate to her sto-ries about the “perils” of growing older.

We have completed auditions for our spring produc-tion of Run for your Wife, a delightful comedy/farce writ-ten by Ray Cooney, about the troubles faced by a London bigamist who has two wives and the complications that arise from his difficult schedule. Somehow, he manages to juggle them both without arousing suspicion. Howev-er, he gets caught up in a mugging, and he wakes up in a hospital. He ends up with Mary instead of with Barbara, with whom he should be at the moment, and he now has to deal with explaining this problem to both of his wives and the police all at once. We are thrilled to welcome back Al Valletta, who directed Plagiarism, Most Foul last spring, as our director for this production.

The performances of Run for Your Wife will be on April 26 and 27...mark your calendars for an evening of hilarity!

MARCHOur meeting/performance on Monday, March 4 will be

a St. Patrick’s Day Special – Clan Rince Irish Dancers! They are a dedicated group of Irish dance champions. The dancers train year round for regional, National and the World Championships. All of the dancers are trained by North American Champion Jeannie O’Connor and

Alisa Garber. They compete in Ireland, England, Scot-land and Canada, as well as all over the US. The show the Clan Rince Irish dancers put on is a selection of traditional steps taken to a higher level, combining the Celtic music with African drums. The doors will open at 6:30 pm, when we will be entertained by Frank Boynton and Steve McConnell.

TRAVEL CLUBOur January outing took us to the beauti-

ful Candlelight Pavilion where we enjoyed a sumptu-ous 3-course luncheon. Three fantastic vocalists told us stories about Tony Bennett’s life and sang his beautiful songs. This was another successful cultural event spon-sored by the Travel Club.

Detailed flyers on all trips sponsored by the Travel Club are located in the Trip racks at the Clubhouse. You

may sign up for trips by leaving a check in the Travel Club envelope at the Front Desk at any time. Unless oth-erwise noted, all trips are coordinated by Heidi Boynton, 760-295-8990. Our 2013 dues remain at $9 per person.

March 12 (Tuesday) - Hsi Lai (“She Lie”) Temple - $52 - Includes a vegetarian lunch buffet. This is the largest Buddhist monastery in the Western hemisphere, located in Hacienda Heights, east of LA. This will be a fascinat-ing 1-½ hour docent-led tour of beautiful themed gar-dens, statue gardens, shrines and more. There will be

additional time to explore on your own. It is a slow, easy walk.

April 4 - Anza-Borrego Adventure - $75 - We’ll travel to Anza Borrego Desert State Park with Dr. Phil Pryde, retired professor from SDSU. He’ll narrate on the way to the desert, lead a leisurely walk at the visitor’s center and take us to the wildflowers. We’ll also have an oppor-tunity to see some of the bigger-than-life metal menag-erie created by a Perris sculptor. Lunch will be at The Arches Restaurant—no, not McDonalds! Be sure you in-dicate your lunch choice on your check as shown on the detailed flyer at the Clubhouse.

VILLAGE LINE DANCERSThe year 2013 got off to a rousing start

with 36 new members and many returning dancers join-ing the Village Line Dance Club on Do Dues Day. If you missed Do Dues Day you may still turn in your check for the Village Line Dancers check envelope at the Club-house for $7 made out to Village Line Dancers. Please include your address and e-mail address and your phone number on the check.

Our dance instructor, Christine Alesani, teaches the Level 1 class on Mondays from 12:30 pm to 2 pm and a Level 2 class on Tuesdays from 10:30 am to 12 pm. Both classes are $5 a session. A very talented and experienced resident, Betty Heyer, gives generously of her time to re-view dances learned in the classes and other line dance experiences on Mondays from 2 pm to 3:30 pm. There is no charge for these sessions.

Club officers for 2013 are President, Grace Spencer; Vice President, Ana Yoshida; Secretary, Jane Van Zyl; Treasurer, Zelda Fox; and Director, Dee Mc Guire.

The Club’s first party of the year is to be held on March 25.

Please contact Grace Spencer at 760-295-2853 for an-swers to any questions you may have about line dancing. Come join us for exercise, fun, and parties.

VILLAGE SQUARESSQUARE DANCE CLUB

Bow to your partner, now bow to your corner, all take hands and circle to your left. At the classes Tuesday, 3 pm - 5 pm, you will have new calls to learn each week. Jim Randal will review these calls as many times as he feels necessary, walking us through them until he feels that we are ready to put them into dance form. He will then call us through a complete dance routine until he feels we are ready to dance to a singing routine. By the time we have danced these new routines a few times, it

will be time to take a break. That dance period is called a Tip. In each tip there may be two to four new calls that he is teaching. There are usually 4-5 tips in one class.

On Thursday mornings from 9 am to 10 am, Verl Lobb and sometimes Sheldon Losnick are our callers for prac-tice day. They graciously offer their time to review all the new calls. Thursday class time helps us to reinforce what we have learned and is very important for becom-ing a confident dancer.

It has long been recommended by all who have learned any form of dance, to practice, practice, prac-tice. We are blessed to live in an area where there are many other facilities offering lessons. Jim teaches some of these classes at other facilities in our area. Look into it! Several times a month there will be other dances that are specifically designed for both levels of dancers in other towns around us. All students and graduates are welcome to these. Every other dance is for students. Jim will also provide flyers from many of these dances. You will often find your classmates there.

We have 31 new members this year and around 20 who are actively using our classes at present. In the past it has been evident that we have more women in the club

Page 44: OHCC Mar 2013

Clubs and Activities

than men. In an effort to make it possible for everybody to dance we have 6 women who can dance the Boy’s part helping in our classes right now. However, we found that we needed more, so we currently have two more students learning the Boy’s part to facilitate singles who want to dance.

There was a Pizza Party for the students Tuesday, Feb-ruary 12 at 4:30 pm and a

St. Patrick’s Day Party (which will include the stu-dents) planned for Wednesday, March 13 at 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm. We will also celebrate the February and March birthdays at this party. It is suggested the ‘wearing of the green’ would be appropriate, if you like. A Corn Beef and Cabbage dinner will be catered by Bobbie’s Hide-a-Way. As you can see, we have something special planned nearly every month. We are very fortunate to live in Ocean Hills Country Club and be offered a full and ac-tive agenda, which provides the opportunity for the ac-tive life we all deserve.

VILLAGE VETS The next Village Vets meeting will be

Thursday, March 28 at 3 pm in Abravanel Hall. This is a meeting and presentation that you will not want to miss! Ever heard of “Warriors and Quiet Waters?” You will learn all about this wonderful program that takes place in Bozeman, Montana. They bring traumatically injured U.S. servicemen and women from Iraq and Afghanistan to a beautiful spot outside Bozeman and utilize the ther-apeutic experience of fly fishing. They present a very high quality restorative program. The generous support of donors and the remarkable dedication of the volun-teers allow this group to operate a Gold Standard rec-reational therapy program. The alumni continue to say that this program enriched their lives in ways that last far beyond their time in Montana. They also know that they can always pick up the fly rod they left with and re-connect with the new friends they have in Montana. Col-onel Myers, USMC (Ret) works out of Camp Pendleton and recruits Wounded Warriors for this special program. You will watch an award winning video that deals with issues facing our wounded warriors and demonstrates how organizations such as Quiet Waters are a necessary component in facilitating their healing process!

Refreshments are served. Not a member yet? Come to the meeting and join for only $10. You do not have to be a Veteran… just an interested party of all of our military service men and women…past and present. TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS!

WALKERS AND HIKERSMarch is a busy month with two hikes and

our first overnight hiking adventure of the year.On March 7, we will be walking and hiking in our own

backyard when we walk out the main gate and into the Calavera Preserve. This is a great hike with interesting landscape, flora, and fauna. I have seen an abundance of birds on some of my hikes in this area including a curi-ous road runner who has been spotted numerous times. Skull Mountain and Calavera Lake are highlights of the trail. This hike is rated Moderate.

We will be going to Joshua Tree National Park for a three day trip on March 12, 13, and 14. We will be staying in Twenty Nine Palms, just outside the park. The hikes we will be taking will be for all levels, easy, moderate and difficult.

On March 28, we will be going to Devil’s Jump Off near Ramona. The Devil’s Jump off is a unique hiking spot in San Diego County. It has a very dramatic drop-off and is a unique offshoot of the San Diego River Canyon. The hike is rated Moderate.

All of our hikes start at the Overflow Parking Lot

where we meet at 8:30 am and carpool to the trailhead. As always, we will be going out to lunch after hiking. There are always some who do not go out to lunch with the group, so don’t stay home because you don’t want to or can’t lunch with the bunch.

If you would like more details on any of our hikes or on the Club, please call Jack Shabel at 760-842-8858. See you on the Trail.

WOODCHUCKS Congratulations to all the former and new

members of the Woodchuck Club for your attending the Safety Video and the shop orientation. Your co-operation really helps safety in the shop as demonstrated for the last fifteen years. Members who missed attending both requirements in using the shop will have to call Larry Bowers for further instructions. The door code has been changed and you are not allowed in the shop.

It is already March as you know. Time does not stand still for anyone and with that in mind; we are starting to make Christmas toys along with the other projects for residents which no other club does as well as the Wood-chucks. Also if you wish to get more involved with the toys and have not already informed us, please call Larry Bowers.

The aluminum can and plastic bottle collections are going very well. We are now in our sixth year. If you have a problem bringing your donations to the blue igloos on the right side of the homeowner’s office, just call Bob Allen or Bob Mellman.

Safety is the number one thought in the shop. Pro-jecting problems and taking care of them before a hap-pening is the right procedure. Cutting larger pieces of wood on the table saw is something we watch very care-fully. You must always stand to the side when cutting and wear safety goggles. Do not cut anything that you are not comfortable in doing. Once again, if you’re not sure of what you are doing, then ask!

Your Woodshop officers hope you enjoy your mem-bership in the Club and please support the Club by at-tending our very informative meetings.

YIDDISH CLUBChai, Yiddish Clubbers. I hope you’ve had a chance to

check out that Yiddish language website that we listed last month: (http://hpass.to/glossary/Default.htm). The curses are especially “colorful” and remind me of one my grandma said on occasion that I didn’t understand at the time!

We will soon be holding our 2nd Annual Bagel Run! You’ll receive a flyer in your tube in advance with an at-tached order form so that you can pre-order. Pickup of bagels will be on Sunday morning, April 7. You’ll add $1 for schlepping and hondling, plus an extra $1 if you want personal delivery to your door. Additional forms will be available in the YC folder at the Front Desk. The commu-nity is invited to participate for some really good bagels mit spreads. Last year, this was a helpful fundraiser for the Club.

At our meeting on Monday, April 22 at 7 pm, we’re going to play “Do You Know More about Judaism than Your Grandchild?” We’ll work in teams to answer trivia questions like: What is the largest port city in Israel? On which holiday is it customary to plant trees? Prizes will be given to the top scorers. Come and play!
