Advisers are essential to the existence of FCCLA. FCCLA needs Advisers who are interested in helping
others develop the skills required to run a successful chapter and who command the respect of students,
administration, and the public
Ohio FCCLA Adviser Consultant Team members share personal knowledge, experience and information with other
advisers by:
Answering basic questions
Helping new advisers and serving as mentors
Presenting workshops and fall adviser professional development retreats
Meeting with advisers who request help
Maintaining a Web site dedicated to advisers in Ohio
Providing new resources for advisers
Organizing Ohio FCCLA State STAR Events
This team of advisers is for the purpose of helping both new and seasoned advisers. Adviser consultants
placed on this team consists of both new and seasoned advisers and are placed on this team by their own
interest of serving or if they are asked to serve. Please feel free to contact an adviser consultant for more
information when you have questions. If they can’t answer your question they should be able to direct you
in the right direction or find the answer for you and get back with you.

dictionary…….. Things to know: This dictionary is intended to help new and seasoned advisers learn about
terms and activities associated with the FCCLA organization
This document will continue to evolve as FCCLA changes and grows
This dictionary is being offered online/hard copy so that each adviser may
choose how they would like to set up their file/binder system
This is a working document to include all advisers input…..please notify
an adviser consultant (listed within this document) when you feel there
should be something added or shared with other advisers
Each adviser should feel free to write in their document to help remember
specific things to each of their events that involve their personal chapter(s)
(ie; transportation departure times, PO’s that need to be made, hotels stayed
at in the past, etc.)

Information and Forms Book This book is created annually with current information and deadline dates by the state adviser from ODE.
A variety of forms, applications, and detailed information on activities and events can be found within this
document. The updated version is typically available during the month of September. It can be found on
the Ohio FCCLA Website. Access to the Information and Forms book is directly found on the homepage. It
can be printed in parts or whole. Many advisers print the entire book so chapter members can also have
access to the information.

THINGS TO KNOW: National FCCLA website has a section devoted to lesson plans that have been submitted by other
advisers. There are over 100 lesson plans. The Adviser publication is distributed 3 times a year to local advisers. It is also posted on national
website. There is an exchange of ideas at the Ohio FCCLA Adviser Consultant website. The adviser section of National FCCLA website also contains a blog.

THINGS TO KNOW: Affiliation is completed online at www.registermychapter.com/fcclamem/oh
Chapter ID#, password and email are required to register. If not affiliated previous year, contact
Paulette Farago at [email protected] to be entered into data base and receive a password.
National dues are $9 per person and state dues are $6 per person for a total of $15 per person.
Types of affiliation for Ohio- Individual, Chapter FCS High School, Middle School and Urban.
Individual- All occupational/workforce program plus FCS programs. Membership dues are paid according to
the total number of members that a chapter registers.
Chapter FCS High School- FCS Chapters at high schools register all members as a chapter. The fee is $750.
Unlimited number of high school FCS students may be affiliated at one price for state and 50 members for
National FCCLA.
Middle School- Chapters at middle school may affiliate unlimited number of members for one fee of $750.
This includes both National and Ohio affiliation.
Urban - Urban programs in previous affiliation hubs may affiliate an unlimited number of members for one
price of $7500 ( $3000 for state dues and $4500 for national dues)

THINGS TO KNOW: Dues are $10 per year Lifetime Membership is a one-time fee of $100.00. Officers serve a two year term: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and VP of
Merchandising/Promotion Sponsor FCCLA National Competitor Grants to State Qualifiers for the upcoming National Leadership
Conference. Qualifiers must apply. Sponsor and set up a tent at the Ohio State Fair to promote the organization Conduct Sales Events at Fall Leadership Conference and State Leadership Conference Support State Officers and State Officer Advisers through various financial donations such as state t-
shirts for conferences Support State Leadership Conference through donations for such items as speakers, decorations, polos
for Conference Helpers, etc. Sponsor Life Smart Teams going onto National Competition through petition process Keep an up-to-date data base of past members and advisers Store items of historical importance to the organization such as scrapbooks, program booklets, old FHA
magazines, outdated pins and emblems, past state t-shirts, and the Charter.

THINGS TO KNOW: Elections take place yearly for local advisers representing regions. Even number regions elections take
place in even years and odd number regions take place in odd years. The Board of Directors is composed of the following positions:
Culinary Teacher, Early Childhood Education Teacher, Lodging Teacher,
Ten Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers (1 from each region), State Officers,
Endowment Chairperson, Representative from the Alumni and Associates, State Parent(s),
FCS Supervisor , State Adviser, Assistant State Director of Pathways, Programs and Services,
and Family and Consumer Sciences Education Consultant

Capitol Hill Leadership
WHAT IS THIS: National Activity TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
This is an exciting and unique opportunity for
all nationally affiliated FCCLA members and
advisers from across the country to network
with each other, develop leadership skills,
participate in service-learning opportunities,
and advocate for FCCLA.

State Officers attend every other year as a group or on their own every year. All members are eligible to attend.

Career Days
WHAT IS THIS: Ohio State Activity Only TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
FCCLA has partnered with three teams in
Ohio; Columbus Blue Jackets, Cleveland Cavs,
and the Columbus Crew. Each team gives a
behind the scenes look at the careers involved
to run the team and then you have the
opportunity to watch the respective team game
that night.

THINGS TO KNOW: These events easily fall into the Career Connection National Project These events happen on a school day/night and time away from school will depend on the distance you

Ceremonies
WHAT IS THIS: National and State Resources TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
Along with the opening and closing ceremony,
candlelight ceremonies can be used to install
officers, new members, recognize members for
accomplishments.

Ultimate Leadership Handbook – high
dollar ($60.00) but well worth the

THINGS TO KNOW: You will need to have 9 candle holders, 8 white candles, 1 white candle and a lighter that works Slips of paper that have each of the 8 purposes listed

Chapter Degree
WHAT IS THIS: Ohio State Activity Only TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
An individual project helping a member to
grow. It shows they can assume responsibilities
in the home, chapter, school, job and
community.

THINGS TO KNOW: Granted by the local chapter School chapters must be affiliated to grant the chapter degree Special recognition ceremony should be given for those receiving the chapter degree Chapter Degree can be inserted when a member wants to complete the State Degree

The constitution states how a chapter should
operate the FCCLA organization. It should be
adopted and updated through parliamentary
procedure practices.

Consumer Knowledge Bowl (Some refer to this event as the Knowledge Bowl)
WHAT IS THIS: TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
The Family and Consumer Sciences Knowledge
Bowl is a three level, team competition that
challenges students’ knowledge of 1. FACS
studies, 2.Early Childhood and Human
Development, 3. Food Sciences, Dietetics 4.
Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation, 5. Fashion
and Housing Design, and 6. FCCLA knowledge

Dress Code policy must be followed when
in attendance at all FCCLA meetings,
workshops, and general sessions.

THINGS TO KNOW: FCCLA dress code is referred to as business attire- National FCCLA has a strict dress code that is
enforced at all National FCCLA events. See dress code at www.fcclainc.org Any school clothing with the FCCLA logo is allowed but note t-shirts are not No flip flops School clothes are ok but will be scrutinized for appropriateness Members are not allowed on stage to receive awards if not in approved dress code Uncommon articles students may not have due to income, wardrobe, etc. a chapter may want to collect
to have on hand. i.e. ties, a variety of sizes in a polo shirt so a member can borrow Unless in costume, members may choose to compete in business attire Please check for state dress code for each event

Endowment
WHAT IS THIS: Ohio State Activity Only TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
The Ohio Association of FCCLA Endowment
is designed to develop and provide a permanent
source of funding to increase and support
FCCLA Leadership activities. The endowment
is governed by a board.
Information and Forms Book
THINGS TO KNOW: Outstanding Chapter Award has a component that requires this event to contribute to the endowment
fund Monies are used for scholarships, leadership grants, state/national grants Donations are accepted by individuals as well as corporate

Evaluator/Assistant Lead
for Judging Competitions
WHAT IS THIS: Ohio State Activity Only TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
EVALUATOR: This is an adviser, past student,
and/or community member that is asked and
invited to evaluate various competition events.
LEAD/ASSISTANT LEAD CONSULTANT:
This is typically an adviser who has been invited
to chair a competition event securing judges and
organizing for the competition event they are in
charge of.

THINGS TO KNOW: FOR THE EVALUATOR:
Read over the rules/rubrics for your assigned event
Be positive with project improvements – many students are competing for the first time
Lunch is provided as a thank you for your time
FOR THE LEAD/ASSISTANT LEAD:
You must secure judges for your event; be sincere in your choices not just selecting a ‘body’ to
fill the spot
Be familiar with your event rules/rubrics/set up/supplies and equipment needed
Events change from year to year so make sure you check for those changes
Lunch is provided as a thank you for your time
Gifts are typically provided to you to give to your judges as an additional thank you besides
lunch
PERSONAL ADVISER NOTES:
Fall Leadership Conference
WHAT IS THIS: Ohio State Activity Only TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
This is a two day opportunity (school days)
where FCCLA members/officers attend
leadership workshops and gain new knowledge
for the upcoming school year. State Officers
plan and host this event.

THINGS TO KNOW: Registration is typically due very soon when school has started because the conference is typically held
in the middle of October-you may hear some advisers call it ‘camp’ (old name) Two registrations will be offered; one package with a t-shirt, one package without a t-shirt – both
include registration, housing, and meals Students stay in dorm type pods (possibly with other students from other schools) which means they
need to bring their own bedding, toiletries, and dress for outside weather Students will attend workshops as well as advisors; talent show, state projects, general sessions with
motivational speakers, campfire, etc. is a typical agenda Held in Marengo, Ohio at the Heartland Retreat Center

WHAT IS THIS: National Resource TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:

Cluster meeting are regional meetings throughout the nation on a rotation basis. Each year the cities change that you can attend. fair booth and provide educational/hands-on

THINGS TO KNOW:
Sessions run 8:00am-1:30pm and 1:00pm to 6:00pm.
There are themes for each day, i.e. Student Body, Distracted Driving, etc.
There are two ‘booths”. One inside youth building and one outside (FCCLA tent).
Chapters may stay in monitored state fair dorms at no cost.
Participants get in to fair free. Prepare hands-on activities for 80-200 participants.
Chapters need to sign up by Feb 1st in order to receive space, ribbons, and signs
FCCLA T-shirts or polo shirts are worn when working the booth. Ohio State Fair T-
shirts may be ordered from FCCLA
Ohio State Fair requires the booth to be opened from 8:00 am to8:00 pm daily.
Minimum of six students are required to work the booth.

The prizes are $50.00 cash, Ribbons and a trophy Contestants must furnish all equipment and food. Ohio FCCLA provides one pound sirloin beef. There are two divisions: FCS and Workforce There are parking and fair passes.

Contestants bring pre-prepared cupcakes made from scratch.

State Officer
WHAT IS THIS: Ohio State Activity Only TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
State Officers are elected by the population of
the chapter membership during the month of
April. State officers participate in making the
decisions for the state level of FCCLA
activities. They plan and execute the Fall
Leadership Conference, Regional
Competitions, and the State Conference to
name just a few.

THINGS TO KNOW: Deadlines need to be met and strictly adhered to
Proper paperwork needs to be filled out and processed You must have the support of your administration including the superintendent Most expenses are covered by the state treasury however additional expenses will come out of the
pocket for both the student and adviser All meetings are mandatory for both student and adviser and will require a handful of school days to be
missed Parent support is also a must
Grades need to be in check as well as the student’s character and behavior otherwise they are in jeopardy
of losing their state title
Strong satisfaction of seeing a student grow their leadership skills
Great public relations for your school and community

WHAT IS THIS: Ohio State Activity Only TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
FCCLA State Parents are elected adults that
become a ‘family parent’ to the State Executive
Council (SEC) and Ohio chapter members
during state and national level activities.

THINGS TO KNOW: Any parent of past or present member can apply to become a state parent It does not need to be a married couple These adults need to be willing to commit to extended periods of time being away from their own
families You must have a strong desire to travel They have the satisfaction of watching students grow and mature into young adults Our current FCCLA parent is Mama Glad

State Projects and National Program Awards are
given annually. State Projects Awards are given
for outstanding state projects. National
Programs Awards are given both by state and
national FCCLA.

Ohio FCCLA Endowment awards monetary grants to all winners. Applications are due by beginning of March. Winning chapters are recognized at State Leadership Conference.

WHAT IS THIS: National and Ohio State Activity TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
Step One is a national program to recognize
new members for learning more about
FCCLA. Webquest is the activity for achieving
Step One recognition. Webquest is a 16
question activity introduces the basics of
FCCLA.

THINGS TO KNOW: Very easy to use within a class or during a chapter meeting Educates even the novice about FCCLA All answers can be found online using the national website You can create your own activities that fits your needs and creativity Providing a recognition ceremony with certificates or awards is very rewarding to the chapter member
who satisfactorily completes the activity Membership CD that has the Step One activity- Webquest on it and has the Step One certificate to print
on it Membership CD is sent out each year to all affiliated chapters and is also available through state adviser
for new chapters

Teen Times
WHAT IS THIS: Originates from the national level TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
Teen Times is the FCCLA magazine. The
magazine showcases schools and their projects
they are doing in the classroom and as a
chapter. News at the national level including
national conferences and recaps of past
conferences. Educational articles are also
included that relate to FCS and career center
curriculums.

WHAT IS THIS: Ohio State Activity Only TO FIND MORE INFORMATION:
Annually a theme is generated by the State
Executive Council.

THINGS TO KNOW: The State Executive Council (SEC) selects the theme during their first training meetings after being
elected as a state officer Many chapters/schools will tie the theme into their competition projects The theme may be used in public relations

Glossary of Acronyms
ACTE (Association for Career and Technical Education) - nation’s largest not-for-profit
education association dedicated to the advancement of education that prepares youth and adults

BOD (Board of Directors) – This is the adult board of directors for the Ohio State FCCLA
organization.
CTE (Career Technical Education) - CTE is preparing students of all ages to help drive
America’s success and vitality. Further, it is creating an educational environment that integrates
core academics with real-world relevance. www.careertech.org
CTSO (Career and Technical Student Organization) – These student organizations are part
of the educational curriculum determined by the discipline. Examples include but not limited to
DECA, Skills USA, National FFA and FCCLA IS a CTSO.
FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) - Family, Career and
Community Leaders of America is a nonprofit national career and technical student
organization for young men and women in Family and Consumer Sciences education in public

NEC (National Executive Council) – The National FCCLA officers that are elected form the
National Executive Council.
NOYS (National Organizations for Youth Safety) - Mission of NOYS: Our mission is to
promote youth empowerment and leadership and build partnerships that will save lives, prevent

OATFACS (Ohio Association for Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences) – We are an
organization dedicated to promoting Family and Consumer Science (FCS) within Ohio and its

SEC (State Executive Council) – This is the student led team of officers that operate at the
state level with the state adviser and their state officer adviser. They are elected each year prior
to and during the Ohio State FCCLA Leadership Conference held in April. Each region of the
state will have a state officer(s) that represent their region and act as the liaison between the
