Business meeting minutes

It’s time to renew for 2002

Attendance at the annual businessmeeting was up for the second year in a row.Free lunch probably was the motivating fac-tor.

Tom Hubbard, retired Ohio StateProfessor and Life Member of ONPA, offi-ciated over the swearing in ceremonies forofficers starting new terms including, EdSuba, president, Kimberly Barth, treasurer,Vince Shivers, television vice president andLindsay Semple the organization’s new sec-retary.

Board Chairman, Bob DeMay wasdiverted to the NCAA men’s basketballtournament to cover Kent State’s run at theFinal Four. Still Vice President, Lisa Duttonwas unable to attend the meeting due to adeath in the family.

A motion was made and seconded topass on the reading of the minutes from theprevious meeting. The meeting continued aschicken and roast beef sandwiches wereconsumed,

Kimberly Barth began with the treasur-er’s report. Money earned through member-ship dues in 2001 increased by $1,000 overthe previous year. Barth requested thatmembers pay their yearly dues morepromptly to cut costs of mailing outreminders to those of us who procrastinate.

Despite the financial loss the previousyear’s convention commemorating the 50thanniversary was deemed a huge success. The board anticipated the loss with the manyextras provided to mark the occasion.

The loss was more than made up forwith a higher than expected interest paymentfrom the George Smallsreed estate thattotaled $13,000 last year. Estimates from theestate trustee are for an average of $7,000 -$9,000 annual return.

For the year the organization lost$1,723.25. The board does not want to raisedues payments and are seeking other meth-ods of income for 2002.

This years clip contest ended with themembers looking for a new rule. One tobreak a tie as for the first time ever the con-test ended in a dead heat between. KyleLanzer of the Alliance Review and NealLauron of The Columbus Dispatch both fin-ished with 474 points according to contestchairman Chris Parker.

Cannon was gracious enough to donatetwo cameras for the winners. The questionof a shoot-out for future ties was raised dur-ing the meeting; the board plans to discuss anew rule for this rare situation.

Parker stated that everything is 98%fine. Suggestions were made to cut outentries completely excluding the stories andto use a Sharpie pen to cross out bylines. Those who enter photos from their newspa-per’s website are to include a print no largerthan 8x10 as their entry with a print outshowing it’s use on the site.

One final comment was to utilize the

clip label form on the website for the con-venience of the clip chair.

For the interest of the members Parkerstated that the three top clip contest cate-gories were Sports, Feature and GeneralNews. 123 members entered the contest in2001.

Dave Polycn was up next to report onthe still contest. By going with the conven-ience of digital entries this year, ONPAexperienced growing pains.

One issue that needs closely looked atis more accurate labeling. No one was dis-qualified this year, however many entrieswere labeled improperly. Next year the judg-ing may be held over a two-day period con-sidering the number of entries.

Disappointed by this year’s lack ofresults from the annual television contest,Vince Shivers reported that the judgingwould be done differently in 2002. Thetapes were sent out this year and notreturned in a quick fashion ending up withno results for the banquet.

The issue of bringing in judges will bediscussed at the next board meeting. Onesuggestion by Shivers was to judge the tapesthe night before the convention and includethe judges as speakers, which may saveONPA money.

The Buckeye Workshop attendance islow; Shivers discussed the possibility of amembership drive through chief photogra-phers at the TV stations. Perhaps this drivewill help to increase the number of partici-pants.

In the absence of Bob DeMay, Ed Suba,Jr. addressed the newsletter report. The printshop at the Akron Beacon Journal will be thenew printer for the newsletter. The changewill give us color capability with a cost sav-ings as well.

Finally the question of new businesswas addressed. No one volunteered to spon-sor next year’s convention. However, laterin the day several people approached thePresident with the possibility of hosting theevent.

Several changes for the ONPA websitewere proposed. It was suggested that theforum be moved from the “Members Only”portion of the site so more people might uti-lize the site including non-ONPA members.A monthly members gallery was also sug-gested.

The last issue brought up in new busi-ness was by Marshall Gorby who suggestedthe sports action category be divided intolarge and small newspaper divisions. Nodecision was made concerning this topic.

With the chips and candy bars nearlygone, members were ready to go and had noold business to bring up. The meetingadjourned completing another successfulAnnual Business Meeting.

Thanks for all who attended and con-tributed.

The digital age dawned at the 51st Ohio NewsPhotographers Association’s Pictures of the Yearcompetition and numbers told the story. One hun-dred thirty six photographers (21 more than in2000) entered 1,868 pictures (up from 1546 in2000) in sixteen categories at the competition heldat the Fawcett Center on the campus of Ohio StateUniversity, Forty-five photographers (nearly doubleof 2000) submitted portfolios in the race to win theGeorge Smallsreed Jr. Photographer of the Yearaward.

In the end, the number four reigned supremeas Mike Levy collected his fourth POY award. Itwas the second win in as many years for the staffphotographer at The Plain Dealer in Cleveland,Ohio. Levy’s first two POY awards came in 1991and 1998.

The contest, which honors the best in newsphotography from around the state, was judged byMarcy Nighswander, professor of visual communi-cations at Ohio University, Ed Reinke, AssociatedPress photographer from Louisville, Kentucky andBill Wade, staff photographer from the PittsburghPost-Gazette.

Numbers also played a big part in the selec-tion of the Clip Contest Photographer of the Yearcompetition. When December judges failed toselect a third place winner in the spot news cate-gory, a quick call to have a clip selected (threeplaces must be awarded according to ONPA cliprules) led to the thirty points being awarded to NealC. Lauron of The Columbus Dispatch. Those pointspushed him into a first place tie and co-clip POYwinner with Kyle Lanzer of the Alliance Review. Itwas the first time in ONPA history that the awardhas been shared.

The 2001 Ohio Understanding Award wasawarded to the staff of The Plain Dealer for theircoverage of the LTV steel story entitled “Up inSmoke”. Michael E. Keating’s first place awardwinner in the Assigned Feature category entitle“Hands As One” was named Best of Show.

The use of the digital software was the bigchange for this year’s competition. After some ini-tial work by contest chairman David Polcyn andlong hours of testing by ONPA chairman BobDeMay, the stage was set for the first digital judg-ing. It was a process that last five hours longerthan normal over the course of two days.

The process was not flawless, as the judgesdid not see some entries by Lisa Dutton and AllanDetrich of the Toledo Blade. The missing Bladeentries were lost in copying the images from theirentry disks. Several were retrieved from the origi-nal disks after the problem was brought to light.Steps have been taken to see that this is a one-time mistake.

Despite the change that made it easier andcheaper for members to enter the competition, thequality of entries was, according to the judges, stillextremely high. They singled out the portrait/per-sonality, sports action and spot news under100,000 categories as examples and, in anotherONPA competition first, awarded nine awards ofexcellence in the War on Terrorism category.

Levy is a graduate of Ohio University whojoined the PD staff in 1991. His four stories, 11 sin-gles portfolio was, according to the judges, “morediverse with good journalism, aesthetics and iscomplete and cohesive.” In individual categories,Levy collected an award of excellence and a sec-ond place in feature picture story, a third place inspot news over 100,000 and first place in the prod-uct illustration category. “It’s a great honor to win

for a fourth time and to be able to work in a statethat has so many talented photographers and anorganization that supports them,” commented Levy

Down-to-the-wire finishes are becoming thenorm in the monthly clip contest. In 1997, ChrisRussell scored 72 points in December of that yearto win. Matt Detrich erased a 68-point lead byaccumulating 112 points in December of 1998 towin his title. Ken Love placed three times inDecember of 2000 to win that year’s POY.

Entering the final month the race for ClipPhotographer of the Year was extremely close. When it was all over it was even closer. In the end,Kyle Lanzer of The Alliance Review and NealLauron of The Columbus Dispatch shared the topprize in a bazaar finish that had six photographerswith a chance to win it all.

December judges from the Green Bay (WI)Press-Gazette unknowingly added their own bit ofdrama to the finish. The initial results for Decemberdid not show a third place winner in the spot newscategory. Honorable mention awards are at the dis-cretion of the judges but it is mandatory for judgesto award a first, second and third place in all cate-gories.

The judges were contacted and told of theiromission. They still had the non winning clips intheir possession and were asked to pick a thirdplace winner. As luck would have it for Lauron, whoat the time he was in second place 30 pointsbehind the leader, his clip was selected for thirdmaking the contest a dead heat. There is no provi-sion for a tie breaker in the contest rules.

Entering the final month Lauron was in fifthplace, 70 points behind Lanzer. Both were multiplewinners in December, Lanzer taking a second andhonorable mention in portrait good for 50 points.Lauron won 120 points with a first in feature, sec-ond in general news and the delayed third in spotnews.

“I’m glad that Neal (Lauron) isn’t here,” saidco-winner Lanzer while accepting his Canon G2digital camera and plaque. “I was afraid we mighthave to have a shoot-off right here.”

The photography staff at The Plain Dealertook home the Ohio Understanding Award byspending 200l documenting the demise of LTVSteel. Their coverage was far-reaching anddiverse--from daily, breaking stories and profiles ofsteelworkers to pictorial essays on steel making inRussia as well as in Ohio. The photographs drovehome the impact of the LTV’s demise, the fight tosave it and the faces of the people who wereaffected for the paper’s readers.

In the Pete and Repeat category, Plain Dealerartist Andrea Levy again won the top three awardsin the Issue illustration category. Brandi Stafford ofthe Cincinnati Enquirer squeezed in an award ofexcellence between the two awards of excellencethat Levy also collected in the category.

The Robert Coon Student Photographer of theYear was awarded to Dave “I’ll Never Miss anONPA Function” Distelhorst of Ohio University. Itwas the first time the award was won by a studentfrom the Athens college. The previous winners allhad been students from Kent State University. Kentstudent Greg Ruffing finished second.

Top honors in the Staff of the Year competitionwent to the staffs at the Springfield News-Sun inthe under 100,000 category and The Plain Dealerin the over 100,000 category. First place awardsfor picture usage went to The News Herald andThe Plain Dealer.
