OHIO STAR CELEBRATIONSteeped in rich history, the Ohio Star quilt block celebrates

the legacy of Civil War heroes and it remains a popular pattern

today. Recreate this classic block with snowballed corners and

set with cornerstones, which creates a lovely secondary pattern.

Begin with two packages of 5" print squares and 11/4 yards of

background fabric to make a pretty lap quilt you’ll treasure for

years to come.

1 cut

From the background fabric, cut:

• (2) 5" strips across the width of

the fabric.

◦ From 1 strip, subcut (8)

5" squares.

◦ From 1 strip, subcut (1) 5"

square. Set this with the

previously cut squares for a

total of (9) 5" background

squares. Trim the remainder

of the strip to 4" and cut

(6) 4" squares.

• (3) 4" strips across the width

of the fabric. Subcut each strip

into (10) 4" squares. Set

these with the previously cut

squares for a total of (36) 4"

background squares.

• Set the remaining fabric aside

for the sashing.

Note: It is important to sort your

squares before moving on to the

next section to ensure you are

able to have the proper number

of matching squares for each

section. As you sort, stack the

squares for each section and

label each stack. We will reserve

the remainder of the cutting for

each section.

For the hourglass units, select

9 pairs of matching dark print

squares, 9 light print squares, and

the (9) 5" background squares.

For the snowballed corners, select

9 print squares and the (36) 4"

background squares.

For block construction, select 9

print squares for the star centers.

For the sashing, select 4 dark

print squares for cornerstones.

Set the remaining print

squares aside for the bonus

or other projects.

Pick up the 9 pairs of matching

dark print squares, 9 light

print squares, and the (9) 5"

background squares you selected

line from corner to corner once

on the diagonal on the reverse

side of each light print square

and background square

in the stack. 3A

Select 1 pair of matching dark

print squares, 1 light print square,

and 1 background square from

your stack. Layer a background

square with a dark print square,

right sides facing. Sew ¼" on

both sides of the drawn line.

Cut the square in half on the

drawn line. Open to reveal 2 dark

print/background half-square

triangles. Press the seams toward

the darker print. 3B

Repeat with the light print square

and the matching dark print

square to make 2 dark print/light

print half-square triangles. 3C

Draw a line from corner to

corner once on the diagonal

on the reverse side of the

dark print/background

half-square triangles. 3D

Place the marked half-square

triangle atop a dark print/light

print half-square triangle, right

sides facing, and dark prints

touching either background or

light print. Sew ¼" on either side

of the drawn line. Cut the sewn

units in half on the drawn line. 3E

Each pair of dark print/

background and dark print/light

print half-square triangles yields

2 hourglass units. Repeat with

the other half-square triangles

to make a set of 4 matching

hourglass units.

Note: When trimming, be careful

to retain the corner points as you

trim both sides of a corner.

If you are using the slotted

trimmer, trim each unit to 4",

then open and press the seam

allowance 1 direction. If you are

not using the slotted trimmer,

open each hourglass unit and

press the seam allowances 1

direction. Measure each unit 2"

from the center point and trim

to 4" square.

Repeat with the 8 selected

print and background pairs to

make a total of 9 sets of 4

hourglass units. Keep the

matching units together. 3F

4 snowball corners

Pick up the 9 print squares and

the (36) 4" background squares

set aside for the snowballed

corners. Cut each print square in

half vertically and horizontally to

create 2½" print squares. Keep

the sets of 4 matching 2½" print

squares together.

Choose 1 set of 4 matching

2½" print squares and (4) 4"

background squares. Mark a line

from corner to corner once on the

diagonal on the reverse side of

each 2½" print square. 4A

Place a marked square on 1

corner of a background square

with right sides facing. Sew on

the marked line. Trim the excess

fabric away ¼" from the sewn

seam line. 4B 4C

Press open towards the print

corner. Repeat with the

remaining marked print squares

and background squares to

make a set of 4 matching

snowballed units. 4D

Repeat with the remaining 8 print

squares and (32) 4" background

squares to make a total of 9 sets

of 4 matching snowballed units.

5 block construction

Pick up the stack of print squares

set aside for star centers and trim

each to 4".

Select (1) 4" print square, 1 set

of hourglass units, and 1 set of

4 snowballed units. Arrange the

units in a 9-patch formation, as

shown. Sew the units together

in 3 rows and press each row

towards the hourglass units.

Nest the seams and sew the

rows together to complete

the block. Press 1 direction.

Make 9 blocks. 5A 5B

Block Size: 11" unfinished,

10½" finished

6 make sashing strips

From the background fabric,

cut (8) 2½" strips across the

width of the fabric. Subcut each

of the strips into (3) 2½" x 11"

rectangles for a total of 24. Set

12 rectangles aside for vertical

sashing rectangles.

Pick up the stack of cornerstone

squares set aside for sashing. Cut

each square in half vertically and

horizontally to create (4) 2½"

squares. You will need a total of

16 squares for cornerstones.

Arrange 4 different print squares

and 3 background rectangles as

shown. Sew the pieces together

in 1 long strip for horizontal

sashing. Press the seams towards

the sashing rectangles. Make 4

horizontal sashing strips. 6A

7 arrange & sew

Refer to the diagram on page 8

to lay out the blocks in 3 rows

with each row being made up of

3 blocks. Place a vertical sashing

rectangle in between the blocks

and on both ends. Sew the blocks

and vertical sashing rectangles

together to form the 3 rows.

Press the seams of each row

towards the sashing rectangles.

Place a horizontal sashing strip in

between each row and on the top

and bottom. Sew the rows and

horizontal sashing strips together.

Press the seams to 1 side to

complete the quilt center.

8 border

Cut (5) 5" strips across the width

of the border fabric. Sew the

strips together end-to-end to

make 1 long strip. Trim the border

from this strip.

Refer to Borders (pg. 14) in the

Construction Basics to measure,

cut, and attach the borders. The

strips are approximately 40" for

the sides and approximately 49"

for the top and bottom.

9 quilt & bind

Layer the quilt with batting and

backing and quilt. After the

quilting is complete, square up

the quilt and trim away all excess

batting and backing. Add

binding to complete the quilt.

for binding instructions.

Cut & Sort

From the accent fabric, cut:

• (3) 2½" strips across the width

of the fabric. Subcut into 2½"

squares. Each strip will yield

16 squares and a total of 48

accent squares are needed.

From the background fabric, cut:

• (3) 4" strips across the width

of the fabric. Subcut into 4"

squares. Each strip will yield

10 squares and a total of (24) 4" background squares

are needed.

• (1) 5" strip across the width of

the fabric. Subcut into a total of (6) 5" background squares.

• Set the remaining background

fabric aside for the sashing

and borders.

Note: As you sort, stack the

squares for each section and

label each stack. We will reserve

the remainder of the cutting for

each section.

For the hourglass units, stack the

6 pairs of matching dark print

squares, 6 light print squares, and

the (6) 5" background squares.

Bonus Table Runners

For the snowballed corners, stack

the 48 accent squares and (12) 4"

background squares.

For block construction, stack the

6 medium print squares for the

star centers.

Set the remaining print squares

aside for another project.

Make Hourglass Units

Pick up the stack of 6 pairs of

matching dark print squares, 6

light print squares, and the (6) 5"

background squares set aside for

the hourglass units. Repeat the

directions in section 2 on page 3

to make 6 hourglass units.

Snowball Corners

Pick up the stack of 48 accent

squares and (12) 4" background

squares selected for the

snowballed corners. Mark a line

from corner to corner once on the

diagonal on the reverse side of

each 2½" accent square.

Place a marked square on 2

opposite corners of a background

square with right sides facing.

Sew on the marked lines. Trim the

excess fabric away ¼" from the

sewn seam line.

Press open towards the print

corner. Repeat with the remaining

marked accent squares to

snowball 2 corners of each 4"

background square. Make 24.

Block Construction

Pick up the stack of 6 medium

print squares selected for the star

centers and trim each to 4".

Select (1) 4" print square, 1 set

of hourglass units, and 1 set of

snowballed units. Refer to the

diagrams on the right for block

construction. Notice that the

snowballed squares in the corners

of this block are a little different

from the blocks used in the quilt,

but the construction method is

the same.

Arrange the units in a 9-patch

formation, as shown. Sew the

units together in 3 rows and

press each row towards the

hourglass units. Nest the seams

and sew the rows together to

complete the block. Press 1

direction. Make 6 blocks.

Block Size: 11" unfinished,

Table Runner A Sashing & Border

From the background fabric, cut

(4) 2½" strips across the width of

the fabric. From 2 strips, subcut

(2) 2½" x 11" sashing rectangles.

of the fabric. From 2 strips, trim

the long side outer borders. From

the remaining strip, trim the 2 end

outer borders. The long sides are

sewn on first.

Quilt & Bind

Layer the projects with batting

and backing and quilt. After the

quilting is complete, square up

the projects and trim away all

excess batting and backing. Add

Construction Basicsgeneral quilting• All seams are ¼" unless

directions specify differently.• Precuts are not prewashed,

so do not prewash other fabrics in the project.

• Remove all selvages.

press seams• Set the temperature of the iron on

the cotton setting. • Set the seam by pressing it just as

it was sewn, right sides together.• Place the darker fabric on top, lift,

and press back. • Press seam allowances toward the

borders unless directed otherwise.

borders• Always measure the quilt top in 3

different places vertically before cutting side borders.

• Start measuring about 4" in from the top and bottom.

• Take the average of those 3 measurements.

• Cut 2 border strips to that size. Piece strips together if needed.

• Attach 1 to either side of the quilt. Position the border fabric on top as you sew to prevent waviness and to keep the quilt straight.

• Repeat this process for the top and bottom borders, measuring the width 3 times. Include the newly attached side borders in your measurements.

backing• Measure the quilt top vertically

and horizontally. Add 8" to both measurements to make sure

you have an extra 4" all the way around to make allowance for the fabric that is taken up in the quilting process as well as having adequate fabric for the quilting frame.

• Trim off all selvages and use a ½" seam allowance when piecing the backing. Sew the pieces together along the longest edge. Press the seam allowance open to decrease bulk.

• Use horizontal seams for smaller quilts (under 60" wide), vertical seams for larger quilts.

• Don’t hesitate to cut a length of fabric in half along the fold line if it means saving fabric and makes the quilt easier to handle.

• Choose a backing layout that best suits your quilt. Note: large quilts might require 3 lengths.

• Use 2½" strips for binding. • Sew strips together end-to-end

into 1 long strip using diagonal seams, a.k.a. plus sign method (next). Press seams open.

• Fold in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press.

• The entire length should equal the outside dimension of the quilt plus 15" - 20".

• Lay 1 strip across the other as if to make a plus sign right sides together.

• Sew from top inside to bottom outside corners crossing the intersections of fabric as you sew. Trim the excess fabric ¼" away from the sewn seam.

• Press seam(s) open.

attach binding• Match raw edges of the folded

binding to 1 edge of the top of the quilt.

• Leave a 10" tail at the beginning. • Use a ¼" seam allowance.• Start sewing in the middle of a

long straight side.

miter corners• Stop sewing ¼" before the corner. • Move the quilt out from under the

presser foot.• Flip the binding up at a 90° angle

to the edge just sewn.• Fold the binding down along the

next side to be sewn, aligning raw edges.

• The fold will lie along the edge just completed.

• Begin sewing on the fold.

close binding• Stop sewing when you have 12"

left to reach the start. • Where the binding tails come

together, trim excess leaving only 2½" of overlap.

• Pin or clip the quilt together at the 2 points where the binding starts and stops to take the pressure off of the binding tails.

• Use the plus sign method to sew the 2 binding ends together, except this time, match the edges. Using a pencil, mark your sewing line and stitch.

• Trim off excess; press the seam open.

• Fold in half with wrong sides together and align all raw edges to the quilt top.

• Sew this last binding section to the quilt. Press.

• Turn the folded edge of the binding around to the back of the quilt and tack in place with an invisible stitch or machine stitch.
