Attention Advisors!

Please keep the following things in mind when compiling your club’s information:

Enrollment Deadline is March 30th (always the last Friday in March) by 4pm! (Yes, this is Good Friday. Yes, we are open.) All volunteers and member who are re-enrolling must be enrolled in 4HOnline by this

date!

A project that does not appear on the member’s record will not be valid for fair judging or for completing the 4-H year. New for 2018: If a member is not taking the same project(s) as last year, they must delete the project from their record when re-enrolling online. Some projects we are able to catch, but we are not able to easily tell when

they forget to drop a project from the previous year. Please check your reports carefully!!

The deadline for adding/deleting a project is MAY 1st!! (Changed from 2017!)

Please remember to turn in your Charter Checklist with your new enrollment forms.

Organizational Advisors received project book order forms. (If purchasing project books, make checks payable to O.S.U. Extension, Miami County.)

2018 4-H assessment fees will be $10.00 per person, per each club they are enrolled in. If paying by check, please make checks payable to: The 4-H Advisory Committee of Miami County. (Assessment fees cannot be

paid by credit card.) Please remember to submit the 4-H Assessment Fee Form with your payment.

Just a reminder - the Extension Office can no longer accept and receipt 4-H member assessment fees. The staff will give you a stamped, self-addressed envelope for you to mail the assessments directly to the 4-H Advi-sory Committee Treasurer. Fees must be postmarked by March 28th or there is a $25 late fee.

Club Enrollment Time!

Reminder: Re-enrollment for 2018 is all online!

That’s right! Due to the ease of use, convenience and success of the 2017 enrollment pilot clubs—all return-ing families and volunteers will complete their 2018 enrollment online. (New volunteers and members will still complete and submit enrollment paperwork to the Extension Office.) No papers, no running to the Extension Office, no hunting signatures — enrollment for returning 4-H is now online! This announcement was made in the September/October & November/December 2017 4-H Newsletters. Information was also included in the 2018 Club Organizational Enrollment packets. A pdf of detailed instructions and an instructional video can be found under the 4-H Youth Development page of the miami.osu.edu website called 4HOnline Tips and Tools at https://miami.osu.edu/4HOnlineHelp.

We want all 4-H families to become familiar with 4HOnline so enrollment can be an easy process for you! Thank you to our families who have already enrolled for 2018! The Miami County Extension office relies on 4HOnline to help distribute important information to our 4-H families and volunteers. By allowing you access to update your personal information (email, home address and phone) you can ensure that you will always receive important news and updates such as newsletters, deadline information and leadership opportunities. The 4HOnline system is a user-friendly database that was created with 4-H families in mind. The database integrates the information we need in the Extension office with information that you as a 4-H member, parent or Advisor are in need of. Please don't hesitate to contact the office if you have questions as you are navi-gating the system. Thank you for taking the time to learn this wonderful database!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: I’m putting in my email address and it says Miami County is not accepting enrollments, what do I do?

A: Be sure you are selecting ‘I forgot my password’ and not ‘I need to setup a profile’. Returning members/volunteers already have profiles in 4HOnline. Also, make sure you have the Role set to ‘Family’ and not ‘County’. This is another main issue we are seeing.

Q: I typed in my email, but it says I don’t exist or I don’t have a profile, what do I do?

A: Contact the Extension Office as we may not have an email address on file for you and will need to enter one in the system for you to be able to register.

All market and lactating animal exhibitors must at-tend a Quality Assurance Session within the State of Ohio in order to exhibit an animal at the Miami Coun-ty Fair. The session must be conducted by a qualified instructor. Exhibitors ages 12-18 have the option to take a test given by a qualified instructor to test out of Quality Assurance.

There are two separate tests. One for 12-14 year

olds and one for 15-18 year olds (Age as of January

1st). If you test out when you are 12, 13, or 14, you

will have to test again when you turn 15.

The test is 50 multiple choice questions and you

must score at least a 70% (35 out of 50). The test is

given in two categories - large (sheep, beef, goats,

and dairy) and small (poultry and rabbits) animals. If

you exhibit in both, you can choose which test to

take.

The testing will be held at the Fairgrounds in the Sec-

retary’s Office on two dates:

March 17th from 1:00 pm—3:00 pm *Pre-

register by March 14th

March 20th from 6:00 pm—8:00 pm *Pre-

register by March 16th

Please call the Extension office at 440-3945 to regis-

ter. You only get one chance to pass the test each

year. If you do not pass, then you must attend a reg-

ular Quality Assurance session.

Important New Rule Reminder

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) Advisory Committee on Livestock Exhibitions has recommend-ed and voted on the following rule change for 2018.

Junior fair exhibitors shall successfully complete Quality Assurance not less than 45 days prior to the opening date of the exhibition in which they will par-ticipate.

Thus, QA training must be completed not less than 45 days prior (June 22nd) to the opening day of the county fair.

This also includes the Ohio State Fair. You will need to complete QA 45 days (June 7th) before the open-ing day of the OSF, regardless of what day you show.

Skillathons

Youth enrolled in animal projects must complete a skillathon for each animal project in which they are en-rolled. Exceptions would be dogs and rabbits as pets, small animals, llamas, and cat projects which will be evaluated at Project Pride Day in July. Skillathon Kits are available to be checked out, but only if they are re-served first. Reservation dates are strictly on a “first come/first serve” basis. Due to club demand, kits must be returned to the Extension Office within 3 days. Or-ganizational Advisors are encouraged to submit a res-ervation form listing the date, time, and specie area(s) needed. Kits may also be reserved via email or tele-phone. Please include a contact person and phone number, the club name, and whether it is okay to adver-tise to 4-H members from other clubs who need to at-tend a skillathon session. The Extension Office will use the dates listed to reserve your kits. If the date is al-ready taken, the Office will call the number provided to request an alternative reserve date. If members are un-able to attend their club’s skillathon night, they are asked to attend a county skillathon or contact another club to participate in their event.

The kits are divided into four stations. Most of the information used in the kits may be found in 4-H project and resource books. Skillathon kit station sheets may be copied and given to the members to use at each sta-tion. At the stations, members will be presented with a task to complete. The helper or facilitator at each sta-tion must initial that they have taken part in the activity. Points may be recorded on the station sheets but are not required. This is not a pass/fail program. It is a learning opportunity.

At the conclusion of the skillathon, station sheets should be turned in to the Organizational Advisor. They are not to be submitted to the Extension Office. Howev-er, a Skillathon Attendance Sheet must be signed by each participant and submitted by the Organizational Advisor to the Extension Office. (Attendance sheets can be found at miami.osu.edu) Clubs have until June 1 to complete skillathon requirements and submit at-

tendance sheets.

County Livestock Skillathons will be held on May 5th and May 12th immediately following the 10am AND the 2pm QA sessions, and May 6th immediately following the 3pm session. Also, April 17th and May 7th at 5 pm prior to the QA sessions. First year members should be accompanied by a project helper to aid in facilita-tion. All activities will be held at the Duke Lundgard Bldg.

News from the Fairgrounds

To All Swine Exhibitors:

There will be a schedule change for the gilts at the 2018 Miami County Fair, as follows:

Friday, 4:00pm—OPEN CLASS GILT SHOW

Open Class Gilts will be released at the con-clusion of the show.

Saturday, 9:00am—PEE WEE AND ADULT SHOWMANSHIP

Saturday, 1:00pm—BORN AND RAISED GILT SHOW

In order for the barrow show schedule to stay the same, the Swine Committee would like to ask for help tearing down the arena and holding pens after the Born and Raised Barrow Show on Wednesday and setting up for the Sale of Champions.

Swine Exhibitors

Youth For the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA ) is replacing Youth PQA plus. Ohio has been at the ta-ble for the development of YQCA, however as a state we are not adopting YQCA in 2018 as our curriculum or means to teach Livestock Quality Assurance.

YQCA will only be needed by those youth exhibitors who wish to show hogs at a National Pork Board sanctioned show such as National Jr. Swine Show, World Pork Expo, etc. It will also be required by the National Western Livestock Show (Denver) for junior market livestock exhibitors. If a youth’s certification in Youth PQA plus has not expired, then it will be hon-ored by Pork Board until certification expires, then they will have to do YQCA. Youth exhibitors will be able to take an on-line version of YCQA by signing up and paying a fee to receive a certificate. Youth PQA plus training will still be in effect through Nation-al Pork Board until the end of 2018, so youth show-ing at these shows can QA certify with either pro-gram.

For 2018, Ohio is continuing to utilize our Ohio AQCA curriculum and policies that we currently have in place. Thus, there will be no change in county quality assurance training for 2018. There will contin-ue to be test out and face-to-face options availa-ble. Thus, any form of online quality assurance train-ing, including YQCA, will not be accepted for comple-tion of quality assurance training in Ohio.

Veterinary Feed Directive Clarification/Reminder

Due to the changes that occurred last year with medicated feeds, there has been some confusion as to whether exhibi-tors can use medicated feed for their livestock projects. As a reminder, a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) fact sheet can be found at https://ohio4h.org/statewide-programs/animal-sciences/livestock/livestock-resources and other species’ pages.

From the fact sheet:

Am I going to be able to get medicated feed? YES. The steps and process are more involved because you can no longer just go to a feed store and buy certain medications to mix in with your feed or buy medicated feeds containing medically important antibiotics. Producers must get a VFD order from their veterinarian and then send or take the VFD order to a feed distributor to get the VFD feed. Your veterinarian may send the VFD directly to where you buy feed.

Some additional information that may be helpful:

A VFD is only required if the medication to be added to feed is a medically important antibiotic for a food-producing species.

4-H Volunteer Orientation and Training—

Final Session

The dedication and commitment of our volunteers make 4-H Youth Development possible. Volun-teers generously offer their time, expertise and provide support for hundreds of 4-H programs all over Ohio. 4-H volunteer applications can be found at miami.osu.edu. To register for the final orientation prior to enrollment, please visit http://go.osu.edu/20184HPolicyOrientation.

March 12, 2018, 6:00 P.M. Policy 1.50 and New 4-H Volunteer Orientation followed by *Cloverbud Volunteer Orientation

*Cloverbuds are 4-H members in grades K-2. New volunteers interested in working with this age group must attend all segments of the program.

Mandatory 4-H Advisor Training

All Ohio 4-H volunteers are required to participate annually in Policy 1.50 Training: Activities and Pro-grams with Minor Participants. This year the training may be completed online. (Face-to-face options were offered in February and March.) Online train-ing instructions were emailed on January 31 to cur-rent/returning advisors.

There is still an opportunity to attend an in person training at the beginning of the New 4-H Volunteer Orientation on March 12th at 6:00 p.m. Please see Orientation article for registration information. Ses-sion will be conducted at the Extension Office. Please contact the Extension Office if you did not receive the online training information or if you have questions regarding the Policy 1.50 training. Policy 1.50 training must be completed by April 1, 2018.

Project Enrollment for 4-H and FFA Members

and Showing Animals at the Ohio State Fair

4-H members must be enrolled in their county in the project in which they enter to show at the Ohio State Fair Junior Livestock Shows (including poultry, rabbits, and dogs), regardless of whether that project is offered for county exhibition. For example: (1) For example: To show in a gilt class at the Ohio State Fair, youth must be enrolled in project 140 Swine Breeding Project and Record Book. (2) For example: To show a dairy feeder at the Ohio State Fair, youth must be enrolled in project 117DF Dairy Beef Feeder (Market). (3) For example: To show breeding poultry (chickens) at the Ohio State Fair, 4-H members must be enrolled in project 150CE Exhibition Chickens; to show breeding poultry (ducks), they must be enrolled in project 150DE Exhibition Ducks, and so forth. (4) For example: To show a dog in agility at the Ohio State Fair, 4-H members must be enrolled in project 201P Performance; to show the same dog in obedience, project 201O Obedience, etc.

4-H and FFA Membership: Ohio 4-H members are sometimes also FFA members, often within the same county or in an adjacent county. These members especially need to keep in mind the 4-H policy about 4-H projects being separate from school projects. To keep work in both organizations clearly separate, 4-H members are advised to take different species in the two organizations or, at the very least, to take mar-ket animals in one and breeding animals in the other. The idea is to refrain from exhibiting the same project more than once. Exhibitors should check their junior fair exhibition rules about exhibiting both 4-H and FFA projects and animals.

Miami County PAS Show

The 2018 Miami County State Fair Qualifying Show will be held Saturday, June 9th. There will be one judge at the show.

Once again, any 4-H member enrolled in a horse pro-ject is eligible to participate in the Qualifying Show. The “every other year” rule no longer applies.

Entries are due in the Extension Office by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18th. There are no entry fees. Absolutely no late entries will be accepted. No ex-ceptions.

Head Advisors will be receiving a letter outlining PAS Show guidelines and an original entry form around April 1st. Additional copies will be available online at miami.osu.edu or for pick up in the Extension Office.

Challenge Tracker

The challenge begins March 1, 2018 and concludes September 30, 2018. Tracker sheets should be submit-ted to the Extension Office on October 1. Clubs will be presented certificates at the conclusion of the Miami County 4-H Run/Walk on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Miami County Fairgrounds. Participating clubs will be placed in a drawing for special prizes.

New 4-H Family Orientation

and Handbook

We would like to welcome our new families to 4-H with a New 4-H Family Orientation on Monday, March 26, at 6:00 p.m. in the Extension Meeting Room. We will introduce the new Miami County 4-H Family Hand-book and discuss the 4-H basics, local and state 4-H opportunities, deadlines, completion requirements, project guidelines, and more. Based on input from last year’s participants, this year there will be more hands-on activities. First year families are encouraged to attend, but all are welcome! Please pre-register with your name, number, and age of youth who will be at-tending by calling 440-3943, or email [email protected].

a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Each officer will receive an officer

manual and one free Parliamentary Procedure

Pocket Guide per club. You must pre-register for

2018 Pullorum Testing School/

Certification

Pullorum School Requirements

The Ohio Poultry Association (official state agency, NPIP) and the Ohio Department of Agriculture are com-bining efforts to organize Pullorum-Fowl Typhoid plate agglutination tester training classes. Whether your certifi-cation is due to expire or you have expressed interest in becoming a newly certified Pullorum tester, we are invit-ing you to participate in the training program. You must

be 18 years of age to become a certified tester.

There is a charge of $50 per student to offset program costs. There is an additional $5 fee for first time partici-pants. Your certification is valid for 5 years. If your cer-tification expired in 2017, you will need to attend this training to maintain certification. If this is your first time being certified, you will physically test a bird, A BIRD WILL BE PROVIDED FOR YOU. DO NOT BRING ANY POULTRY TO THE CLASS. Each person needs to please bring a lawn chair to class as chairs will not be provided.

Pullorum Testing Equipment Dependent on availability, the Ohio Poultry Association will sell Antigen in 10 ml (approximately 200 tests) bot-tles for $40.00 each on the day of the class. Please indi-cate on your registration if intending to purchase. If you are interested in purchasing the 50 ml (approximately 1000 tests) bottle you may order it directly from: Twin City Supply – 614-595-8608. Information on where to purchase all other supplies (bleeders, needles, test box-es, testing plates, etc.) will be in the packets that will be provided at the tester training class.

Valentine Service Project Winner

A total of 4 clubs participated in the Alvetro Ortho-dontics Valentines Day Cards service project activity. The Club who provided the most cards was awarded a pizza party, complete with drinks and dessert for their next meeting. The winning club made over 300 valentines to deliver to residents of local Miami County Assisted Living facilities. Congratulations to Hares & Stuff 4-H Club!

State Fair Livestock Entry Forms—You

will need An Educator’s Signature!

Special note for those of you planning on entering your livestock projects in the State Fair. State Fair entry forms require a County Extension Educator sig-nature. In order to obtain this signature, you must have your entry form completely filled out (including all other signatures) before you bring it to the Exten-sion Office. Be aware that Demetria will be out of the office June 22 for Cloverbud Day Camp and June 11-15 for Jr. Camp. Please plan accordingly.

Ohio State Fair Scholarship Opportunities

In an effort to recognize the quality youth of Ohio, and to help those interested in furthering their education, the Ohio Expositions Commission has established a Scholarship Program for Ohio State Fair participants.

The purpose of these scholarships is to assist high school juniors and seniors, and graduates who are con-tinuing their education at an accredited institution in an under graduate course of study in any field.

Scholarships will be awarded to junior exhibitors during the Ohio State Fair. Applicants will be judged on Scho-lastic Standing, Citizenship and Leadership, Ohio State Fair Participation, County Fair Participation.

Local Health Hero Update

Hello Readers!

The first part of my journey as the Miami County Health Hero representative has been exciting and educational. I have attended two meetings in Colum-bus where we are learning about putting Healthy Liv-ing concepts into action within our communities. Healthy Living includes healthy food choices, healthy physical activity, mental health and awareness of current health concerns in our community.

For Healthy Physical Activity: Take a walk and try the Bicycle Blender Smoothie Maker or the 4-H Bio-Band by Dr. Bob

For Mental Health: Try talking it out, mental health is important to build your best self

Since being a part of Health Heroes I am aware of the Opioid Crisis in Ohio. Though this cannot be fixed over night, I along with all other Health Heroes are trying our hardest to raise awareness of the problem and introducing new ways to take action.

This month, I am headed to the National Summit Feb 15-19th in Chevy Chase Maryland at the 4-H Nation-al Conference Center. I look forward to expanding my knowledge and to bring new information back to Miami County!

Ohio 4-H Cloverbot Challenge

The Ohio 4-H Cloverbot Challenge is blasting off for 2018! This year the theme is all about space and learn-ing ways in which humans could live in space for ex-tended periods. This is a great event where Cloverbuds work in teams to problem-solve using STEM skills. Teams research the topic, build a model of their solu-tion out of interlocking bricks (ie: Mega Blocks), create a poster illustrating their work and present to families and other teams at the Cloverbot Challenge on June 9 at the Nationwide & Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. Enjoy “Breakfast with the Easter Bunny” on Satur-day, March 17, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., at the Miami Valley Centre Mall in Piqua. The mall is located off interstate 75 at Exit 82. The Easter Bunny will arrive around 10:00 a.m. The 2018 Jr. Camp Counselors will be providing “Easter Fun Activities” including crafts, games, and more. Tickets are $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for children 5 - 9, and free for children 4 and under, with a paid adult. The meal includes all you can eat pancakes, sausage links, coffee and orange drink! Proceeds from the breakfast benefit the Miami County 4-H Jr. Camp Program.

Miami County SWCD Contest

Miami County Soil & Water Conservation District is holding a contest for whichever student can come up with the best design to showcase the history and im-portance of Agriculture and Conservation within Miami County.

The contest is open to any High School student attend-ing a school with Miami County. The entries will be evaluated an voted upon by the MCSWCD staff. Once a winner is chosen, they will be awarded $100! Also, their image will be enlarged and placed on a sign that will be displayed in front of the SWCD office on 25A, included on flyers, and displayed at their banquet and in the County Fair display.
