A SPECIAL NOTE FROM OHIO’S WINDING ROAD: During this un-precedented time of Covid-19, we are saddened to say that many of

the experiences presented in this book are or will be canceled to help prevent the spread of the virus. We ask that you please check with each event organizer to see if the events are still being held. And yet, we feel strongly that Ohio’s Winding Road can still celebrate the people and businesses and organizations behind these experiences,

so we have decided to keep their events in the book. We will continue to offer them support through our “Seed Fund” grants, workshops and

training programs, and regional promotion. You can also keep these people in mind as you plan your own future experiences after the vi-

rus passes. Finally, we ask that you, too, find ways to help and support your neighbors throughout southeastern Ohio.

_____________

This book is organized into four sections. In EXPERIENCES, we high-light guided tours that represent the creativity of local residents and

honor the region’s land and people. In STORIES, we focus on success-ful businesses that represent the spirit of Ohio’s Winding Road. Our

FIELD GUIDE provides a deep dive into a seasonal theme: this time it is “Farmers and Markets.” And finally, in the CALENDAR, we provide a carefully curated overview of exciting experience opportunities taking

place here this spring and summer.

Ohio’s Winding Road is built on a simple premise: we are sharing our Appalachia, where the arts, history, outdoor recreation, local foods, and authentic lodging and shopping create an improved quality of

life. At its heart, Ohio’s Winding Road is a way of living in Appalachian Ohio: We are a map, a compass, a pair of binoculars. We connect a

network of neighbors with each other, and with visitors. Together, we are making our region a meaningful and beautiful place to live and

visit for those seeking nature, culture, and creativity!

MUSIC OF COAL IN SOUTHEAST OHIO

This four hour tour with lunch will bring people to our historic coal mining sites and interpret the history through the music of coal, including recently rediscov-ered songs. Participants will visit Millfield, Shawnee, XX Mine Site, Tecumseh Lake, and New Straitsville.

Back in 2007, Jack Wright produced a box set record-ing called Music of Coal, with detailed notes about coal mining culture, historic photographs, and song lyrics. This year, Burr Beard, along with Wright, is producing a film called Music of the Knights of Labor in southeast-ern Ohio. Wright has studied and made films about the struggles that miners and mining towns face, especially

health problems. When Jack Wright originally produced Music of Coal, he found no songs from southeastern Ohio. Re-cently, Wright and Beard have discovered six. Wright and Beard will perform relevant songs at each lo-cation on guitar, Hammer dulcimer, and vocals.

Rising Appalachian Warriors (RAW) provides engaging and educational camps all summer long. Their hands-on approach to education turns activities that may sound dull (such as “sustainable practices”) into dynamic experiences for children. These include: learning to dig clay from the ground, making crafts such as bowls, using collected rainwater to soften the clay, and building a kiln the crafts are later fired in.

During environmental education activities children can expect to splash through a creek, overturn rocks on a salamander hunt, or net insects to drop into a terrarium for later identification and study. Older campers have built trails on the farm, including a serviceable foot bridge, run first aid scenarios, and more.

This workshop focuses on the preparation of herbal medicines made from healing plants that grow in southeast Ohio. Cindy Parker has been a practicing folkloric herbalist of the wise woman tradition for over 40 years. She loves sharing her knowledge and experience with those also interested in being more involved in their own health care. Participants will identify, harvest, and use botanicals found growing naturally in this area as well as some that have been planted specifically for their medicinal properties.

This workshop is scheduled to coincide with the blooming of St. John’s Wort, one of Cindy’s

favorite botanicals which grows along Margaret’s Creek. This flowing stream is named after Margaret Hanning Snowden, the first white woman to set foot on its banks when she was 22 in 1796. Following a brief introduction of herbal medicine, we will prepare teas, tinctures, and salves commonly used to promote wellness and restore balance to the physical body while also soothing the mind and spirit.

16 OHIO’S WINDING ROAD

BY GRANT JOYIn this installment of stories along Ohio’s Winding Road, we travel to Just a Jar Press in Marietta to experience hand-made woodcut posters and signs. We also learn about small business success, and how the arts are helping revitalize Marietta.

I am slowly driving east atop the ridge on Ohio State Route 550. A quilted-patchwork of sun-soaked hill country farms to my right and yellow-orange colored woodlands to my left keep me company. The hilly roadway mirrors the distinct landscape of the region. The rugged land-scape is alive with fall color and the sun bathes the land in a yellow glow; clear-blue skies are overhead as they look over the Appalachian foothills. I am set to meet with Bobby Rosenstock, a woodcut print artist, who co-owns and operates Just A Jar Design Press with his wife Sara, located in the historic river town of Marietta. I am meeting with Rosenstock as part of my

OHIO’S WINDING ROAD STORIES

AmeriCorps service with Ohio’s Winding Road. Ohio’s Winding Road is a grassroots collaborative network that seeks to build an experience-based economy. We do so through connecting, support-ing, and promoting regional businesses, produc-

ers, and organizations that help to create an authentic sense of place through south-east Ohio. I soon learn that Bobby Ro-senstock’s passion for woodcut printmaking started on a study abroad trip to Tasmania. “I re-member seeing a one-colored woodcut portrait of a face,” recalled Rosenstock. “It was a pretty rustic looking wood print that had a strong wood grain and was kind of rough looking. That really inspired me.” It was that moment that led Bobby to convince the

professor to let him take an open studio course to delve deeper into woodcutting. After graduating from college, Sara and Bobby moved out West to Portland, then back East to

Philadelphia. While studying printmaking and book arts, Rosenstock heard about the now-defunct YeeHaw Industries, a Knoxville based print shop that specializes in producing band posters. “I called them up and asked if I could come work for them,” recalled Rosenstock. “I saw what they were doing and [knew] that’s what I’d been looking for.” It was his aha moment. He spent that summer working for Yee-Haw. More importantly, the dream of running his own print shop slowly started to take hold. After that summer, Sara had gotten a job at Marietta College in 2009 and the couple moved to town. It was here in Marietta that Just A Jar Design Press started to take root and grow. Bobby had found an old 1960s Vandercook proofing press, outside of Cincinnati. Next, he started printmaking in his garage. The creative arts scene along Ohio’s Winding Road would give Rosenstock the boost he needed. “Slowly, I got connected with the folks at Stuart’s Opera House,” Rosenstock remembers. Though they were hesitant at first, with a little persistence, Rosenstock convinced the staff at Stuart’s to pro-duce band and event posters for them. “They had a fundrais-er coming up and I said I’ll make you [Stu-art’s] free post-ers for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band show. So, I made that poster in 2010 and people liked them. Then Stuart’s hired me to make a poster for Dr. John. That stuff got out there [and] then we got other businesses from the area, and it grew from there.” More than just creating a tangible keepsake for music lovers

“The arts play such a big role in revitalizing neigh-

borhoods and towns,” Ro-senstock states. “Whether

that’s public art, art gal-leries, art walks, or retail

shops in a small town like this. All of the local eat-eries, business, and mu-sic venues support each

other.”

OHIO’S WINDING ROAD STORIES: JUST A JAR PRESS

and concertgoers, the relationship between Just A Jar and Stuart’s represents the symbiotic nature that exists in many Winding Road communities. Both entities benefit from one another’s creativ-ity and skill sets. Their working relationship is emblematic of an interconnected ecosystem that many locally-owned businesses and experience producers rely upon to grow throughout the Winding Road region. Bobby and Sara’s artistic abilities can be felt regionally and nationally, but it is the sense of community and the significant role that a print shop has played, historical-ly, that resonates with Bobby. “The commu-nity aspect of things is pretty important to me,” Rosenstock ex-plains. “There’s a his-tory of the print shop spreading the news, sharing information, and creating the design esthetic for the town. I’ve done posters for national bands and organizations, but I’ve always wanted to be a community print shop. We’ve done pro bono posters for the (River Cities) farmers market [and] art walk. We’ve done posters for keeping fracking out of the Wayne National Forest and for the local

roller derby team.” Both Sara and Bobby are continuing the role print shops have played in the past as they con-tinue to work with their local community to craft unique identities for local businesses and orga-nizations. Through their branding design collab-orations with local businesses, such as Marietta Adventure Company and Athens based Little Fish Brewery, they work with others to facilitate new

identities and stories for businesses and organizations along Ohio’s Winding Road region. Bobby shows me the old, worn out, 1800s wood type he uses in crafting his posters. I quickly learn that much of the wood type in the shop was purchased from two local sourc-

es, Marietta’s own Richardson’s Printing Company and a local printer from Cambridge. I notice the nicked and dented type lends itself to the inter-connected community that makes southeast Ohio unique. Rosenstock glowingly speaks of the Cambridge printer: “He had found me through my website,” Rosenstock continues. “He had owned a printing business that had been in his family since

Page 19: OHIO’S WINDING ROAD EXPERIENCES · Bohemian Art Tours invites you to go on an “Appalachian Art Adventure” and capture the scenic splendor of the southeastern Ohio countryside

19

the early 1900s. He was so excited to know that I would be using the type and that I was working with kids. He [started] tearing up. He was so happy that it was going to be used. And he thought all this technol-ogy was going obsolete.” The type was given a “rebirth” as Rosenstock calls it. He’s right. The lineage of local printmakers continues to live on through the wooden type apparent on Rosenstock’s posters that adorn his shop. The old type speaks to Rosenstock’s love of story and how the print shop itself connects people generationally. It is evident that Rosenstock is committed to sharing his love of printmaking generationally to those who are interested. He has given tours to elementary-aged students, adults, and community groups on numerous occasions. He even informs me that his two daughters, ages four and seven now, both started printing in the shop at the age of three. He has even hosted high school and college interns as a way to further the art form and ensure its longevity. Rosenstock harbors the same enthusiasm and passion as the Cambridge printer, whose type still lives on in the shop. Rosenstock’s willingness to let people have tangible experiences when visiting the shop illustrates the young print-er’s belief in the power of printmaking. Rosenstock’s strong belief that art can be used as an avenue to help grow and enrich the fabric of a community is palpable. “The arts play such a big role in revitalizing neighborhoods and towns,” Rosenstock states. “Whether that’s public art, art galleries, art walks, or retail shops in a small town like this. All of the local eateries, business, and music venues support each other.” This ecosystem of support among local businesses has helped Marietta grow into a vibrant quaint town. In parting, Rosenstock mentions that he sees a “unique charm to these towns.” He’s right, there is a unique charm to these towns. He’s also right that it’s a combination of things; one of those things being Just A Jar Design Press.

As the 2020 growing season unfolds in southeastern Ohio, we want to focus on different ways to experience all that the region has to offer: what can be more ‘local’ than fresh produce, flowers, plants, meats, cheeses, and so many other products that come from the land? And, we’re excited that there are many ways to experience these products and the places and farms where they come from. So, we’ve decided to focus not only on markets, but also on the farms themselves, where you can often go for a tour or event that brings you closer to the land and the people who take care of it. It’s a win-win! Over the year, we’ll keep adding to these lists (check out our website –– SEOHIO.ORG –– for updates). But for now, here are just a few of the different farms and markets to visit and enjoy the bounty of Ohio’s Winding Road.

DESTINATION DAYS

Going to town isn’t what it used to be in our mod-ern society. And we know that cherished routines and regular hang outs are a part of good living. In response, local “creative partners” around the region are organizing street fairs, farmers markets and cultural programs on a regular day of the week or month during the warm months. Check out our current, growing list. Look them up on Social Media for details and times.

This bi-annual publication of selected experiences is brought to you by Ohio’s Winding Road, a collab-orative network of experience producers, creative

persons, organizations, and civic leaders. These “stakeholders” are working to create a brand that

represents authentic cultural and natural assets in nine Ohio counties in the Muskingum and Hocking River valleys. Ohio’s Winding Road stretches from Athens to Zanesville, and from Lancaster to Pome-

roy along the banks of the Ohio River.

The goal of this book is to connect residents and visitors to many engaging experiences taking place

along Ohio’s Winding Road throughout the year while working together to build the “experience

economy” in southeastern Ohio. For more detailed information and even more experiences, we en-

courage you to contact individual vendors and local Convention and Visitors Bureaus.

Join Ohio’s Winding Road as a producer, entrepre-neur, organization, leader, customer, or audience member! We have Sector Meet Ups for socializa-

tion and learning, and Winding Road Work Groups that take on tasks such as organizng tours, market-ing, and grant writing. It’s all about what “we” can do for one another! Follow events on social media
