Goals and Principles Here at Ohlone College, we have a few basic goals for our players; thus, while here at OC, our coaching staff desires for each of our players to become ...

1) Better Players -- Our program features video analysis work, a detailed strength and conditioning program, a long toss / throwing program for pitchers and position players, and arm care program for all pitchers. Detailed charts and statistics are used to monitor the progress of our players while also giving us a tool to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses. Coaches at OC are responsible for helping our players develop their skills in order that they become better players during their two years here. 2) Better Students -- Our program features comprehensive academic program designed to help our players succeed and improve in the classroom. Our

"Academic Expectation, Progress, and Performance Program" features the use of a daily binder to help players with notes, time management, and organization skills. Meetings with coaches are mandatory to help with academic scheduling and progress. 3) Better Men -- Our program stresses attention to detail, hard work, professionalism, intensity, 110% effort, being a "man for others," and always living by the credo of 40 > 1. This credo states that our daily decisions affect EVERYONE around us; thus, when I make a decision, it must be a decision that is for the betterment of the 40 people around me each day (i.e. teammates, coaches, and staff).

Here at Ohlone College, we live by a few principles that are non-negotiable: 1) Play Hard -- It is NEVER acceptable to give less than 110 percent. Running out ground balls, sprinting on and off the field, sliding on every close play, diving for balls to keep them in the infield, putting constant pressure on the defense -- all of these examples embody the spirit of what it means to be a Renegade. 2) Play Fast – Don't let the game be quicker than us. Think ahead. Be prepared. Expect the ball. Stay ahead of the game and our opponent. 3) Play Together – We are together nine months a year and for this reason, it is important that we have complete trust, loyalty, and respect among our players and coaches. If somebody can't adhere to the ideal of playing together, then they don't belong with us. Again, 40 > 1! 4) Execute – It's no longer enough to try hard. When we were little, it was satisfying to hear, "Good try!" But now, we need to do more than just try --we need to execute and perform. Once we learn to execute and perform, the next step is to execute and perform consistently. If we can't execute and perform consistently, then we need to work harder. 5) Have Fun – We're here to play HARD, to play FAST, to play TOGETHER, and to EXECUTE. Additionally, we're here to have fun. For us here at Ohlone College, working hard, seeing improvement, playing against the best, competing for championships, and being a part of a committed team can mean only one thing: FUN! We're here to have fun playing the game we all grew up with. 6) Think Ahead and Be Accountable – Your actions directly affect those around you. Understand that EVERY decision you make will have either a positive or negative affect or influence on your teammates, coaches, family, and community members. Often, we can’t undo the actions we’ve done or take back the words we say, so THINK AHEAD! 7) Live in the Moment – Remember when you went 4-4 yesterday? It’s over. Remember when you made that error last inning? It’s over. Remember your strikeout last at-bat? It’s over. Live in the moment. Think WIN (What’s Important Now!). Whatever you did last game, last inning, or a second ago, whether good or bad, is now over. It’s time to move on and produce again!

8) Get It Done! – Nobody cares about your excuses. Nobody cares how rough the seas are; just bring the ship in to shore. Just GET IT DONE! GET IT DONE!

What kind of academic help does OC Baseball offer?

1) We have implemented a strict academic system for our players referred to as our Academic Excellence, Progress, and Performance Portfolio (AEP3). • Players take notes for each class they attend • Players keep running total of points possible/earned • Players fill out bi-monthly sheets and document following week’s priorities, assignments, etc. • Players turn in grade checks throughout the year • Players meet with academic counselor each semester to review progress toward graduation • Players can be required to attend free tutoring at coaching staff’s discretion for any class • Players are encouraged to be in constant contact with coaches regarding academic progress

2) At Ohlone College, we are the ONLY JC IN ALL OF CALIFORNIA to be recognized by the ABCA 3 straight years

(2016, 2017, 2018) with the Team Academic Excellence Award. In 2016 and ‘17, we led the state with 6 All-Academic All-State Awardees each season. In 2018, Ohlone had 12 Academic All-Americans! Take a look at our Team GPA and 3.0 players each Spring (in white, is prior to my arrival; yellow is during my tenure):

Semester Spring ‘13 Spring ‘14 Spring ‘15 Spring ‘16 Spring ‘17 Spring ‘18 Team GPA 2.21 2.76 2.49 3.02 3.20 3.19 Players w/ 3.0 5 9 8 16 18 18 Academic All-American 1 4 4 6 6 12

3) Before taking over the program at Ohlone, I took over a 7-28 West Hills College team in the Fall of 2011. The

academic achievement BEFORE our arrival and DURING out tenure is significant (again, white is prior to our arrival, yellow during our tenure):

4) Here at Ohlone College, we’ve placed numerous players on the CCCBCA All-Academic All-State Team 5) Here at Ohlone College, we strive to make academics a priority 6) Here at Ohlone College, our academic motto is “Don’t survive in the classroom … THRIVE the classroom!” 7) Our AEP3 program is working here at OC!

Can OC Baseball Make Me a BETTER PLAYER?

Can OC Baseball Get Me to the NEXT LEVEL? At Ohlone College, our job is to develop our players. Through hard work, toughness, adjustments, and attention to detail, we attempt to turn our

• Average players into GOOD players • Good players into GREAT players • Great players into ELITE players

In 2017, for example, we led ALL OF CALIFORNIA (88 teams) in batting average (.339), pitching (2.40 ERA), and fielding (.980 fielding percentage). Research from an independent authority (Collegiate Baseball Magazine) asserted that this feat had probably never been accomplished before in college baseball history. In 2018, we led the state AGAIN in fielding and pitching (with a 1.75 ERA!). The majority of our players see spikes in their abilities and numbers form one season to the next because of our structured development philosophy. Our program, while not guaranteeing anything to anyone, can confidently say that we will work harder than ANYONE in moving our guys to the next level. In my four seasons here, here are the players who have moved on to NCAA or NAIA baseball. Recent players have signed with some of the best NCAA Division I schools in the country:

• 2014 – 8 signees • 2015 – 8 signees • 2016 – 12 signees • 2017 – 12 signees • 2018 – 10 signees

What were the 2017 and 2018 Seasons like? Does OC Win?

The 2018 Ohlone College Baseball rang up a 39-8 record and was the ONLY team in California (out of 88!!) to “run the table” in their conference with a perfect 18-0 undefeated record. The Renegades were ranked as high as #18 in the country and won the Coast Conference Championship, Regional Championship, and Super Regional Championship. The “OC” finished just one game short of the Final Four! The historic season was led by AJ Curtis. The sophomore was a Player of the Week winner, First-Team All-American, First Team All-Region, First Team All-State, Coast Conference Player of the Year, the NorCal Batting Champion, the CCCBCA “Big Stick” Award winner, Team MVP, Ohlone “Male Athlete of the Year” and a 23rd Round pick of the Cincinnati Reds in the MLB June Draft. Curtis eventually signed with perennial NCAA College World Series participant Cal-State Fullerton. Ethan Skuija (13-1 on the mound) was also a Second Team All-American and a total of 14 Renegades were placed on the Coast Conference All-Conference Team. The Renegades performed well in the classroom as well with a team GPA of 3.19. That made them a recipient of the prestigious ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award for its 3rd straight season. A total of TWELVE players earned the All-Academic All-State Team honors.

It was, however, the 2017 Ohlone College baseball that started it all. The team had one of the most historic season’s in the history of California Community College baseball as they put together a 42-7 season, won four championships, and finished the regular season leading entire state in hitting (.339), pitching (2.40), and defense (.980). The 42 wins was both a school record and the most wins in the state for the 2017 season. Additionally, the Renegades were ranked as high as #7 in the nation in the Perfect Game JUCO Top 25 Poll and eventually finished the season at #17.

The Renegades won the Coast Conference Championship (with a 17-1 record), a Regional Championship (over Big 8 power Cosumnes River), a Super Regional Championship (over rival Cabrillo), and a Sectional Championship (over another Big 8 power, Sacramento City). The Renegades finished the season with a trip to the CCCAA Championships in Fresno, only to be upended by eventual state champion Grossmont College, 4-3 and El Camino, 6-1. A total of 13 players were voted All-Conference while the Renegades posted two All-State players and four All-NorCal players. On the national level, the Renegades placed four players on the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team while two of those were selected as ABCA/Rawlings All-Americans. The Renegades may have performed one of the most amazing feats in the history of California Community College baseball as they

In the classroom, the Renegades were equally impressive, with a team GPA of 3.20. Four the team’s 27 players finished with 4.0 GPA’s and another 14 finished with a 3.0. The 2017 Renegades placed six members on the CCCBCA All-Academic All-State Team as well.

A rundown of the 2017 season’s awards are as follows:

How do I become a Renegade? Want to play baseball at Ohlone College next year? It will be the BEST decision of your life!! Just follow these simple steps:

1. Ohlone College Application for Admission The Application for Admission is free. Type this address into your browser and it will bring you to an online application (there are directions for international students as well as U.S. students): http://www.ohlone.edu/org/admissions/howtoenroll.html

2. Financial Aid Application (FAFSA) – IF INTERNATIONAL STUDENT, you will NOT DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a must! Even if you know that you do not qualify! NO financial assistance can be given unless the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is completed. This is the most time consuming step, but perhaps the most important! Type this address into your browser and it will bring you to the FAFSA homepage:

a. http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and then click on “Start Here” and follow all the directions b. Type The FAFSA will ask that you provide them the code for the school you are applying. Enter 004481 for Ohlone College

NOTE: Ohlone College already has a very user friendly financial aid page. If you’d like, you can just go here instead: http://www.ohlone.edu/org/finaid/finaidprocess.html

3. Contact both Coach Curran at 559-285-8413 and let me know you’ve applied and that you’ve done financial aid (a text or phone call works fine) Call and leave a message and let us know you’ve applied, submitted your financial aid, and are now ready for us to help you with steps 4-6!!

4. Placement Assessment To find out about placement tests through Ohlone College type in this address: http://www.ohlone.edu/org/placement/

The score from that test will allow our advising staff to accurately place you in the appropriate Math and/or English class.

5. Housing There are two options: 1) live off campus (i.e. apartment), or 2) live at home. There are plenty of nice apartments around the city of Fremont. We recommend that 4 players share a 2-bedroom apartment. Apartment costs are about $600 - $650 per player, but can be less depending on location, amenities, and the number of players in the apartment.

6. Meet with our Counselor All athletes must be enrolled in at least 12 units during the season. Make an appointment with our the counseling office at 510.659.6110. LEAVE A MESSAGE if they don’t answer and let me know if you don’t get a call back within 2-3 days. Speak slowly and leave your phone number and student ID number.
