It has been one heck of a busy summer for the 52nd MP BN and it isn’ t done. You all performed admira-bly at both the Akron Air-show and the Painesvill e Party in the Park security and recruiting missions this summer. We received ac-colade from the Akron and Painesvill e PD as well as the MAPS Airshow coordi-nators and the Painesvill e event coordinators. They all said that these events were a success due to our dili gence and efforts. Well Done!! !

The culmination of our training year is our annual AT event in Sept. We have 20 soldiers heading to BELT at the academy along with an equal num-ber going through the MP quali fication course. Leav-

ing Camp Perry with 40 additional qualified sol-diers is a real boost to our future missions. Don’ t for-get the recruiting competi-tion that SPC Willi ams rolled out at the Aug drill . Somebody is going to be flipping steaks and some-one is going to be eating them… which one will you be??? Let’s get out there and find new assets to fil l our second MP company. The security of our region and our famili es depends on it.

soldiers. Also discussed was training,

equipment, as well as the financial and

time commitments, the dedicated soldiers

of the Corps and that we are prepared for

missions our state need.

By the end we’d met with 75 of 80 mem-

bers, in spite of ongoing emergency fi-

nancial meetings. We also attended that

day’s House session, and were introduced

as a group, to the House of Representa-

tives by Rep. Tim Schaffer, who spon-

sored a Bill to create the “Ohio Milit ary

Reserve Homeland Security Study Com-

mission” to evaluate the role and effec-

tiveness of the OHMR. Also present was

State Senator Tim Grendell , who is a

Capt. assigned to the 52 MP BN. These

Annual Training 2005 will be here in about two weeks. There is a lot of training on the

schedule for that week and I hope we can take full advantage of it. The recent events on

the gulf coast show the type of situation we could possibly face. I t is imperative that we

train to the maximum extent to prepare us to respond effectively if that type of emer-

gency ar ises in our AOR. Unfor tunately, one weekend per month and one week per

year doesn’t fulfill that need. Much of our training must be done on our own time. The

first Leadership Pr inciple is “ Know yourself and seek self-improvement.” Only you

know your true level of readiness. I t’ s up to you to strengthen your capabili ties. The

second Leadership Pr inciple is “ Be technically and tactically proficient.” This can only

be done through training, practice and professional study. I urge you to set aside some

time each day, if only a half hour , for your own professional development. We have the

best, most capable unit in the OHMR. By each of us improving ourselves individually,

we greatly enhance the abili ties of the whole unit. I look forward to seeing all of you at

Today, with the key role played by the Na-tional Guard in federal milit ary prepar-edness --a fact well demonstrated dur-ing the Persian Gulf War -- the national State Defense Force program is an inte-gral part of our Nation's "Total Force" concept of military readiness. The need to protect the li fe, liberty, and property of the citizens of Ohio has not changed since first formed.

Organized and maintained as trained cadres of volunteer soldiers capable of

The Ohio Milit ary Reserve is a compo-nent of the State's Uniformed Forces and operates under the Constitution and laws of the State of Ohio, under the command and leadership of the Gover-nor, the Honorable Bob Taft, the State Adjutant General, MG John H. Smith, and the OHMR Corps Commander, MG Charles E. Hollar.

Unlike the National Guard, the Ohio Milit ary Reserve is exclusively state funded and not subject to federal call -up. The OHMR continues the proud tradition of a voluntary organized state guard. Formally organized in 1803, "Ohio's Own" represents one of the oldest continually maintained state guards in the United States today.

Ohio's state defense force has served with distinction during every major conflict since the War of 1812. During times of state emergency, the OHMR has worked along side of the National Guard and civilian agencies. When the National Guard was federalized or sent overseas, the OHMR stood ready to

rapid expansion at the order of the Governor, OHMR units are structured as military police, communication, and medical units. The OHMR is addition-ally charged with the task of providing physical security for key assets and milit ary convoy movement within the state, providing aid to civil authorities in natural or man-made disasters, main-taining peace during riots and civil dis-order, being able to suppress insurrec-tion, and assisting in the defense of the State.
