Welcome to the 2018 Open House New York Weekend!
As it has for the past 15 years, OHNY Weekend invites you inside hundreds of buildings across the fi ve boroughs to experience the architecture that makes New York the most remarkable city in the world.
While the event remains the same, longtime fans of the Weekend will notice some major changes this year. We are thrilled to unveil a new ohny.org. The new site better refl ects OHNY’s expanding role as a year-round platform for civic engagement about the future of the city. But more importantly, it was redesigned specifi cally with the OHNY Weekend experience in mind: it is easier to navigate, has more ways to fi lter sites, and–most importantly–includes a “My Itinerary” function that allows you to star the sites you are most interested in visiting. With a few clicks, you can now make a personalized OHNY Weekend guide to take with you, or share with friends as you make your Weekend plans!
The new ohny.org is supplemented by a fresh look for the event guide you are now reading. As in years past, the event guide lists all the Open Access sites you can visit without reservations (for a list of sites that require reservations, visit ohny.org). But the new layout also gives you a preview photo for every Open Access site, and reduces the text to the essentials of what you need to know about where and when to visit. Visit ohny.org for detailed site descriptions, more photos, and other access information.
The openness that OHNY Weekend makes possible is something that needs to be nurtured and celebrated. We are grateful to our sponsors, supporters, and OHNY members for investing in our mission. And as you travel around the city this OHNY Weekend, please take a moment to thank the site hosts that open their doors, and the dedicated volunteers that help make this weekend possible. Their generosity is a gift to all New Yorkers!
Best wishes for a wonderful OHNY Weekend!
Dear Friends:
It is a pleasure to welcome everyone to the 16th Annual Open House New York Weekend.
It’s no surprise that the greatest city in the world boasts a phenomenal array of historic and contemporary buildings, parks, open spaces, bridges and infrastructure, and over the next few days, many of them will be on full display for our residents and visitors to explore. Established in 2003, OHNY gives people the chance to get an inside look at more than 200 architecturally and culturally signifi cant sites in all fi ve boroughs, including private residences and places normally closed to the public, and it offers tours and talks led by historians, preservationists, engineers, architects, landscape designers, and other experts.
The 2018 OHNY Weekend features returning favorites like the Alice Austen House in Staten Island, the campus of Bronx Community College, and the Woolworth Building in Manhattan’s Financial District – one of our city’s fi rst skyscrapers – as well as new additions like 3 World Trade Center and the Mother Clara Hale Bus Depot in Harlem. Also new this year is the “Factory Friday” series offering a behind the scenes look at more than a dozen industrial and manufacturing locations, including a distillery, an iron works, and an herbalist’s laboratory, along with a “Works by Women” series showcasing projects created by women designers, among them the Brooklyn Public Library Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center and the Queens Plaza Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvement Project.
On behalf of all New Yorkers, I thank OHNY’s staff and volunteers for once again presenting this outstanding event that highlights our city’s remarkable built environment and exemplifi es the boundless diversity and spirit of innovation that defi ne the fi ve boroughs. Please accept my best wishes for a fascinating and uplifting weekend.
Sincerely,
Gregory WessnerEXECUTIVE DIRECTOROPEN HOUSE NEW YORK
Bill de BlasioMAYORCITY OF NEW YORK
First held in October 2003, Open House New York Weekend unlocks the doors of New York City’s most important buildings to give the public an extraordinary opportunity to experience the city and meet the people who design, build, and preserve New York.
The 2018 Open House New York Weekend is made possible, in part, by generous support from Porcelanosa, with additional support from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties and west elm.
Public support is provided by funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
WNYC and The Architect’s Newspaper are media partners for Open House New York Weekend.
From historic farmhouses built in the city’s earliest days, to Art Deco theaters that capture the exuberance of the Jazz Age, to new buildings at the cutting edge of design and technology, hundreds of sites across all fi ve boroughs are open to visit, with tours, talks, and other special events taking place over the course of the Weekend.
OHNY Weekend deepens our understanding of the importance of architecture and urban design to foster a more vibrant civic life, and helps catalyze a citywide conversation about how to build a better New York.

This OHNY Weekend, Open House New Yorkcelebrates the contributions that women are making to shape the contemporary city. Drawn from architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design, each of the participating projects in this series has a woman as one of its principal designers. The projects range from libraries and high-rise residential buildings to parks and public spaces, and together help make visible the diversity in scale, type, and program of the buildings and public spaces that women are designing throughout New York.
All participating sites are Reservations Required. To learn more about the projects and make reservations, visit ohny.org/worksbywomen

This Open House New York Weekend, the Gotham Center for New York History launches a new podcast series that explores some of the famous architectural structures, government buildings, private homes, natural sites, churches, and museums that will open their doors for Open House New York Weekend. Each recording presents a noted expert speaking about the history or importance of a given location. The narratives can be used to supplement in-person visits, and to bring the OHNY Weekend experience to anyone unable to see these historical treasures.
To listen to the podcasts, visit www.gothamcenter.org or scan the QR code.
About The Gotham Center:The Gotham Center is a research and education center, based at CUNY’s Graduate Center, devoted to advancing scholarly and public understanding of New York City’s rich and living past. For nearly twenty years, it has been the one academic institution devoted exclusively to promoting this critical fi eld of study. Our goal is to support independent and professional historical work examining the various forces and fi gures that have shaped life in the city, as well as New York’s unparalleled contributions to the development of the nation and the world.

Founded in 1893, the Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) works to educate and inspire New Yorkers to engage in the betterment of our city. As a non-profi t advocacy organization, MAS mobilizes diverse allies to focus on issues that aff ect our city from sidewalk to skyline. Through three core campaign areas, MAS protects New York’s legacy spaces, encourages thoughtful planning and urban design, and fosters inclusive neighborhoods across the fi ve boroughs.
In honor of its 125th anniversary year, MAS curated a series of tours especially for Open House New York Weekend of iconic sites where the advocacy of MAS helped preserve, shape, or reimagine the city’s built environment. All tours are Reservations Required. For more information, or to make reservations, visit ohny.org/MAS125
